IN ORDER TO REMAIN FINANCIALLY SOLVENT, I'M HUSTLIN' COOKIES.
My roommate and I are trying to stay caught up on our rent until the lease to our current apartment expires at the end of October. Our current living arrangement is unsustainable for two reasons: the rent is steep in proportion to our collective income, and the location is too far away from our jobs. I have to ride the bus for two hours EACH WAY to get to my job, which leaves me with little free time and energy to do much else but work. I’m already putting in overtime at my job, and my roommate’s considering getting a second. Our ultimate goal is to find a cheaper, more spacious and more centrally located apartment – and to be able to afford it. IF YOU BUY MY COOKIES, YOU WILL HELP ME & MY ROOMMATE CRUNKIFY THE UNIVERSE.
We cannot do this if we are overworked, broke and/or homeless. HERE IS THE MENU:
Butterscotch Oatmeal (my specialty!) Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Raisin Snickerdoodle White Chocolate Macadamia Nut HERE IS THE PRICING:
$1 per cookie (postage paid in the US), but you must order at least 10 cookies, and multiple flavors must be broken up in increments of five. For instance, if you order 10 cookies, you can get them all in one flavor, or five cookies each of two different flavors; 20 cookies can be broken up into 20 of one flavor, 10 of 2 flavors, 5 of 4 flavors, etc. HERE ARE YOUR PAYMENT OPTIONS:
Paypal me at lovesickrockstar@yahoo.com OR direct message me for a snail mail address. When I mail your cookies, I’ll scan my postage receipt and e-mail it to you. If you don’t get this e-mail from me within seven days of placing your order, I will refund your money, no questions asked. ALL COOKIE ORDERS WILL COME WITH A PROMO CDR OF THE NEW COCKER SPANIELS ALBUM, “SOMETIMES YOU’VE GOTTA FIGHT TO GET A BIT OF PEACE.”PLEASE HELP ME OUT. Your tummy & ears will thank you!

WEST COAST TOUR PACKAGE:
"Sometimes You've Gotta Fight to Get a Bit of Peace" CDR + Commemorative West Coast Tour 2009 Poster = $10 postage paid EVERYWHERE
THE FUNDRAISER:
For those who aren't already aware, I've officially reached the
mid-point of my West Coast tour. It's the first national Cocker
Spaniels tour I've embarked on in four years, and I'm doing it to
support the first Cocker Spaniels album in five years, "Sometimes
You've Gotta Fight to Get a Bit of Peace."
For this tour, I've been selling CDRs of the album and commemorative
tour posters to show attendees. Both the CDs and the posters have
artwork designed by my unfathomably talented friend and roommate Stef
Summerise. (A photo of the poster has been attached to this note!) I
originally planned to sell these CDRs and posters only at shows, but I
have now decided to make them available over the Internet as well.
If you're unable to attend any of the shows on my West Coast
tour, and you'd like a CDR of the new album and a commemorative tour
poster, you can get both for $10 postage paid, no matter where you
live. You can either PayPal your payment to lovesickrockstar@yahoo.com.. or message me privately for a snail mail address.
THE RANT:
Allow me to be frank: I'm doing this because it's the 1st of the month, and I'm short on rent.
Despite my attempts to budget efficiently, I haven't made enough money
at the first 12 shows of my tour to cover my expenses. Granted, I
shouldn't expect or feel entitled to have $100 bills thrown at me on
tour. However, when my financial troubles are due in part to the
incompetence of others, I can't be entirely faulted for my
disappointment.
Artists touring on a DIY (do-it-yourself) scale rely heavily on
local acts in each city to promote and draw people to their shows, and
thus make money. These local acts can expect such reciprocity when
they go on their own tours. For instance, if I play a show in Boise,
and the supporting acts there do their part to bring people out to see
me, they can expect me to do the same if and when they set foot in
Austin. Unfortunately, in almost half the cities I've played so
far, I've dealt with support acts breaching what my buddy Travis
Nichols would call "punk rock etiquette."
A support band in San Antonio brought many of their friends to the
show, but failed to tell them that there would be a cover. Because of
such, the show had exactly one paying customer. In El Paso, a band
showed up with their friends, all of whom stood across the street from
the venue during my set, and then WENT HOME after my set. They didn't
even play! In Lakewood, Port Townsend, and Salt Lake City, one support
act each failed to show up, and made no effort to communicate with me
regarding their absence. Between these five cities, I made $140, after
spending $300 on gas to get to these shows.
I personally chose about two-thirds of the acts that I'm playing with on this tour.
For every act that plays a Cocker Spaniels show, there were 10 other
good ones in the area who couldn't play, and 50 terrible ones whose
music I had to suffer to get to the good stuff. I drove myself crazy
for two months trying to organize this tour in a way that would benefit
everyone involved. When support acts flake out on me, they disrespect me and compromise my livelihood. Anyone who knows me knows that if you mess with my music or my money, I will shank you...if karma manages not to do so first.
To the guy who set up the show in Lakewood: did you really think it was
a good idea to set me up with bands that sound like Staind? To the guy
who set up the show in Salt Lake City: did you really think it was a
good idea to skip town mere days before the show, and pass your
responsibilities on to your (understandably clueless) housemates?
I hope the tone of this letter doesn't give anyone the impression
that I'm not having the time of my life on this tour, because I am.
I've been going hard on stage, making new friends and fans in every
city, taking lots of pictures, and making plans for future tours and
recordings. However, in order for me to KEEP doing so and still have a
home to come back to, I need money.
If you plan to attend any of the remaining shows on this tour, be it
as an audience member or a support act, PLEASE tell everyone you know
about the show, and bring as many folks as possible with you. Have as good a time as possible at my shows; buy as much merchandise as you can; sign up for my mailing list; and say hello! In return, I will sing and play my skinny black ass off, as the Creator has called me to do.

I have many things to be thankful for, and one of them is my fan base. I'm not a Top 40 artist – or even a Pitchfork darling – but I'm honored to have even a few thousand people who like my music enough to support it. The four years that have elapsed since the release of “Withstand the Whatnot” have been trying, but your encouragement and patience have served as necessary fuel for me to keep going. It is with this spirit of gratitude and hope that I appeal to you for help. You all know that most musicians' lives are fraught with economic instability; there are few who can make a living solely off of music. Right now, I work full-time as the Accounts Receivable clerk for a nonprofit agency that provides free counseling for employees of affiliated businesses. I enjoy the job, and it pays me fairly well. However, I still don't make enough to cover my living expenses AND pursue my creative projects. I bring home around $1600 each month after taxes: $850 of it goes to rent; $225 goes to student loans; $150 of it pays my electric bill; $85 of it pays my water bill; $70 of it pays my phone bill; $40 of it covers my Internet access. This doesn't leave me much money to devote to expenses such as groceries and transportation, let alone ANYTHING music-related. I've worked second jobs to meet my financial needs – twice this year alone – but those jobs left me so physically, emotionally and creatively drained that I had to quit them. I've taken out loans, and had entire paychecks eaten up by interest fees as I slowly repaid them; I'm avoiding credit cards for the same reason. I gave up my car this spring because I could no longer afford the insurance and repairs. I rely on public transportation now, and walk between two and 10 miles every day. I've sold most of my CDs and about half of my instruments; the bass and drums that you'll hear on the new Cocker Spaniels album, Sometimes You've Gotta Fight to Get a Bit of Peace, were played on borrowed gear. My financial troubles have thrown me into near-suicidal depression multiple times over the last few years. As badly as I want to get out of this rut, I know that I must do so in a manner that is both financially lucrative and psychologically healthy for me. Since I'm at my best as a human being when I'm being creative, creativity must become my salvation. Thus, I have decided to take a cue from Momus, the renowned songwriter whose portrait album Stars Forever freed him from astronomical legal debts, and set up a similar (albeit WAY less expensive) patronage system for myself. The follow-up to “Sometimes You've Got to Fight to Get a Bit of Peace” will be a portrait album. Anyone who makes a donation of $25 or more to me, along with a story or anecdote about themselves, will get a Cocker Spaniels song written about them. (If you don't want a song written about yourself, you can designate a topic of your choosing for me to write about.) The pricing scheme will be as follows: $25-$49 donation = I will write a song based on your story or anecdote, with as much of your original wording preserved in the lyrics of the song; $50-$99 donation = You'll get the song, with your name incorporated prominently in the lyrics; $100+ donation = You'll get the song with your name in it, as well as a percentage of the royalties from the first pressing of the album when it's available for sale. You can donate in one of two ways:
1) Paypal it to lovesickrockstar@yahoo.com, and send a separate e-mail to that same address with your story or anecdote, or
2) Mail a check or money order with your story or anecdote to Sean Padilla @ 3018 S 1st St #201, Austin TX 78704.
Once I receive your donation and your story, I'll write a set of lyrics for it, and e-mail them to you. If you approve the lyrics, I'll write and record the music shortly thereafter. You'll receive a CDR of the song, and I'll post an mp3 of it on my website. Once I have compiled an hour's worth of songs, I'll release a tangible version of the portrait album! Although my primary motivation for doing this is money, I also consider this patronage system an artistic challenge to myself. Until now, most Cocker Spaniels songs have been based on things that I've directly experienced. This portrait album will be an opportunity for me to put more empathy into my music, to capture other people's thoughts and experiences in the same manner that I do my own. I vow to make these songs as true to my patrons' experiences as possible, and to craft them at the same level of quality that I have the previous two Cocker Spaniels albums.
Below, I've posted a table listing the patrons I've accrued thus far; the titles and subject of matter of their songs; and links to the lyrics and mp3s for the songs I've completed thus far. (If you've donated, but your name doesn't appear on this table, it's because you haven't sent me an anecdote yet. Hop to it!) I plan to post @ least one new song every week from this week onward. Now that Sometimes You've Got to Fight to Get a Bit of Peace is completed, I can give the patronage system my undivided attention. I thank you all for your patience and generosity! ........ .. | Patron | Song Title | Subject | Lyrics | MP3 | | A.H. | “I Saw Him Standing There” | A woman sees Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees at the drugstore, but none of the people she tells about this sighting believe her. | Coming Soon | Coming Soon | | A.K. | “Antoinethan” | A half-hour concept EP about the friendship, courtship and marriage of a painter and an athlete. | Coming Soon | Coming Soon | | A.T. | “Empty Summer Camp” | A kid accidentally gets dropped off at summer camp a day early, and takes full advantage of it. | Coming Soon | Coming Soon | | Anon. | “Mark's Mechanical Mind” | A tribute to Fallnet, the Internet mailing list devoted to the legendary British band the Fall. | Coming Soon
