                      INTERVIEW with
                      Serge and Alain of
                       CHAOS CURBS
                             (Belgium)

By Jeanne Thomas for MUEN Magazine

MUEN: Have you been in the music business all your working life or have you done other jobs along the way?

Alain : Yes, I started at the age of 16 as a drummer, but later morphed into a singer, I then picked up the guitar for composing purposes. For years I was working as stage help, and then became a crew chief, and now made it as stage a manager. For some concerts I take also the role as technical director.

Serge : Well, I did some other things, after school I signed up in the army for 2 years, jumping out of planes and stuff, after that I had a few non interesting jobs, but kept my focus on music all the time. In the 80's I played in a Thin Lizzy cover band and was on the road for some time. Then I left for Indonesia where I played all over the place, pubs, hotels, tv shows... I also do some work as a studio session musician and have a new day job at The Bank Entertainment, where I co-write music for different kinds of projects and help developing music events. Today, music has become a full time job and I can't imagine doing anything else !

MUEN: You have met many famous influential people in your lifetime. Have any of these people taught you something that you incorporate into you life or music?

Serge : Indeed, I've had the chance to meet some legends along the way, Ozzy Osbourne, Brian May, Pete Way to name a few and spend some time with some of 'em, but mostly it was just hangin' out with them, or on some occasions picking up the guitar and having some fun. When you're into music all the time it's relaxing and fun to do or talk about something completely different, just to change your mind! So don't forget, when you meet some famous artist, for you it might be a one time event, but for them it's almost every day they meet fans when they're on tour... The thing is, just be yourself and do your own stuff and that's exactly what I'm doing.

Alain : Thanks to my job I've had the opportunity to meet alot of people, both known and unknown bands. That's a good thing I think, so I can discover other cultures and music styles. The most memorable person I've met was Lemmy (Hawkwind, Motorhead), but I can't talk much about this... I just can tell ya what happened isn't a good example for upcoming bands... LOL

MUEN: Being in the music business for so long, what have you learned from the music industry as a whole ?

Alain : Serious work always pays off somewhere... if you work like a pro, hang out with pros, etc... People will take you more seriously also, whatever the kind of music you play.

Serge : It's quite a jungle out there with lots of promises and people who just wanna make money out of you... So think twice and be very careful before you sign a contract ! That's why I do most of it myself, with some exceptions on legal paperwork where I ask a lawyer to evaluate the risks involved. You gotta move your butt, make contacts and meet people, because most of the time they won't come to you, at least not if you start in the business... but don't get me wrong here, I'm a musician in the first place, practicing and writing new stuff is the most important to me!

MUEN: In todays world the internet seems to be playing an intricate part in the way that music is being distribute, almost replacing the traditional sales of CDs. What are your thoughts on this?

Serge : Every band or musician should use it ! It's an incredible way to get your music to be heard all over the world. There are loads of digital stores to sell your stuff, it's up to you to find the most interesting one for you. You'll have much more exposure this way, the downside is that there always will be illegal downloads - but in the overall picture you'll benefit from your efforts. The internet is there for the quantity, you make the quality. It's a great way to meet fans and make contacts with some very fine and interesting people that could boost your career!

Alain : Indeed, the internet has changed things a lot, it's much more easier to be heard, to be distributed and so on… but on the other hand, record companies offer something stable like recordings, marketing on new releases, etc… These days bands can record a bad demo and it seems OK, the less expenses the better, they don't really care about the quality no more or even the band when you think about it, they just distribute and that's it… Not really what we wanna do!

MUEN: Word is you are completing final touches in hopes to release a Chaos Curbs CD soon. Can you tell us when the release date is and where it will be available for purchase?

Serge : I'm aiming for June this year, if everything goes as planned, there are still some songs I'd like to have on the CD, but needs final touches and with my new day job it will take a bit longer as expected. We'll start with CD baby and our myspace pages for the sale of the first batch.

MUEN: Where was it that the two of you met up? When was the decision made that would allow Alain to be your singer? Was there something about him that really stood out to you?

Serge : We know each other from way back, we used to hang out at the same bars and pubs in Brussels and eventually ended up in a local band called "Storm". Alain was already singing there and I got in as second guitar. That's where I found out that he could sing like no other. After the band split up we went our separate ways till last year when I needed a singer and contacted him, never forgot his voice.

MUEN: For how long have the 2 of you been collaborating together as Chaos Curbs?

Serge : Not long enough... lo l...About 8 months I think, since I gave Alain a phone call to see if he was interested in doing some vocals on my songs, we met, he listened to the tunes and here we are. We both have almost the same interests and like variety in writing music, which makes it fun and that's what makes our music quite original. Alain has an amazing way to bring that additional feel to the music, he's doing one hell of a job here!

Alain : Not long enough as says Serge, we used to play together for a while in the early 80's, but we lost each other out of sight... He left for Indonesia and I was exploring the Belgian heavy metal scene... LOL But now we're in for quite a few years to come I think, we both enriched our musical knowledge and opened up to different music styles, but in the end coming back to our origin... metal!

MUEN: The Randy Rhodes Schlorship helps students pay for the exuberant cost of getting a proper music education. There is usually little money left in educational budgets for any kind of support of the arts. Tell us how you are helping out in this charitable cause and any other charities you contribute to musically or are affiliated with.

Serge : I found out about the Abandoned Children in Bulgaria through Nella on myspace and here in Belgium on national TV and was interested in what she was doing for those kids, she was looking for donations, the idea is to make a CD and a benefit concert for the children. So we donated a song to support her efforts. You should check out her myspace if you're interested in offering a helping hand. Then there was the Randy Rhoads CD project for the Randy's scholarship fund for UCLA, supported by his mom Dolores. I decided to send in a song 'cause I could help out musicians who can't afford to properly learn music. Matthew Sear and Mike Lowery, who started this project, accepted my tune and added it with other great songs on the CD! The CD is now available via paypal and all raised funds will go to the Rhoads scholarship fund. I have a blog with all the details on my myspace page, or check out the RR CD Project page. It would be too long to explain here.

MUEN: Are there any side projects other than your charities that Chaos Curbs has been working on as of late?

Alain : Yes, I have some side projects goin' with other bands too, with "Kube" I sing, play the keyboards and guitar, I can even clean the place if you want…LOL Then there's "Blows", an acoustic band where I sing and play the guitar. We'er both busy bees when it comes to music, but we love it.

Serge : Lots of things are going on at the moment besides Chaos Curbs, I'm currently working with Alan Lee Shaw (The Damned) and Robbie Kelman (Dripping Lips) not only for The Bank, but also on our own project, let's see where we go with that. I have a bunch of instrumental cover songs, which will be used as background music in supermarkets, but that deal isn't done yet... As a songwriter I also have some tunes presented to other artists and Dj's, hope one of 'em will sell.
No worries, work enough... it's amazing we still have time for Chaos Curbs… LOL

MUEN: Do you have any plans for the near future? Maybe taking the show on the road and overseas to maybe the United States?

Serge : The near future will bring a new CD and a Video clip at the same time, there's a fund raising festival coming up (normally in Croatia) for the Abandoned Children in Bulgaria organized by our good friend Nella. A tour is being planned for the end of the year in Germany, Spain and Belgium, maybe Italy... and contact is being made in the U.S. to see if we can play there, but that's still a long shot, but who knows... And our Christmas song we made earlier will be released as a single by the end of the year... Things are moving quite fast lately.

MUEN: Many musicians owe a lot to the support and efforts of others who help them along the way. Anything you'd like to say to your friends and fans?

Alain : We're amazed by our fans reactions and support, it's the internet again who plays a big role here. The ability to be much closer to our fans and anybody can write us at anytime. I'd like to thank all of 'em for believing in us and for their messages filled with love and encouragements. This renders me quite humble and happy, thank you !

Serge : I'd like to thank each and every one of our fans and friends for the awesome support they give us. We'll cya at one of our upcoming gigs, just come over and say hi, we won't bite...LOL Another big thank you goes to all the radio stations that share our music with the world, especially Doc & Jade at Broadcast Asylum, Ang, AJ and Malice at K94 Rocks, Dave at TraxxTV and all the others that play our stuff. You guys rock! And of course you Jeanne for this kick ass interview for MUEN, I enjoyed every second of it. You deserve a big box of Belgian chocolate ;-)

The Randy Rhoads CD project was an idea developed by Matthew Sear and Mike Lowery after the 25th anniversary of the passing of the amazing musician Randy Rhoads. The RR CD Project (myspace)

Randy lived only 25 years on the earth, but has left an outstanding mark on the world of guitar. What he achieved in such a short time was only equaled by his musical genius.

Randy's playing, like other guitar innovators, broke rules and pushed beyond what was 'conventional' of the time. Because of this each one of Randy's solos is remarkable in it's melodic structure and phrasing.

When the 25th memorial came upon us we began thinking about what Randy was looking ahead towards, before he died, and what was close to his heart. It is commonly known amongst fans of Randy's that Randy wished to study for a Masters Degree in Classical Guitar.

Sadly Randy never got a chance to do that, but now is our chance to help others who wish to persue their dream and give back too, to Randy ! From this the cd project was born.

All profits raised from this project will be donated to the Rhoads Scholarship fund at UCLA. The Scholarship fund supported by Delores Rhoads, Randy's mum, helps talented students who need financial help and also keeps the flame of Randy alive in the world of music!

What a great way to keep the torch burning.
I will leave you with the kind of man Randy was.

Randy assumed there were plenty of guitarists that were better than him.
Despite winning the prestigious best Guitarist award, Randy remained hungry, seeking out teachers while on tour.  As a teacher Randy impressed individuality on his students and working your own destiny.

He was very particular about doing his best as a musician and getting the right sound.  Above all Randy was one of the kindest people.
He is remembered warmly by his fans and family and friends.

Randy Rhoads, rest in peace, God bless you.

Thanks Matt & Mike for making this happen !!!
Luv' ya guys

CC's Interview by Nocturna (Metal Dragon Promotions)          22 Feb 2008

Hi How are you ? You are just preparing to go in to the studio with talented Alan Lee Shaw in Rotterdam, this must be a very exciting time for you, how are you feeling ?

Hi Nocta, I'm fine, thanks for asking, well I feel incredibly fortunate I could do some studio stuff with Alan, the guy's a legend and the fact alone of playing with him was an honour by itself ! For those who don't know him, he was a member of the legendary "The Damned" back in the days…we were introduced by Robbie Kelman (The Dripping Lips) who was in Rotterdam also. This is in fact a side project of the three of us, we'll be writing some more tunes together, record and see where we go from there…

CC you have been a highly sought after and talented musician for years, however this is your first independent project, what motivated this decision and what are your hopes for the future ?

I wanted to do my own thing for years, but never got into it seriously. Too young I guess, and it would have been a financial disaster at the time also, so it wasn't a bad idea to wait the right moment.
It was more fun to play on stage and to record for others in studio than to take it to the next level and actually write an album. Travelling all over Europe and Asia didn't help either, on the other hand what better school can one have as to play music with local musicians in different countries…Now I'm much more confident to start my own thing, and also my close friends who kicked my butt to actually do it !
How I see the future…I wish I could…lol… I love music and that's what I'll be doin', whatever happens !
I hope for the best, but in the end it's the fans who'll accept my music or not and there's always the opportunity to work in the background as a songwriter.

Listening to your music there are many different styles and genres present creating a mixture all of its own, though paying homage to previous movements, which musicians have influenced you the most and how has that shaped your work ?

I grew up listening to lots pf great musicians and bands, but Robin Trower and Steve Hillage had that special thing to it that when I heard them it was like, wow this is different, at least at the time and to me…
There are so much incredible guitar players in different genres and most of 'm contribute in some way to my playing. Be it John Mc Laughlin for his awesome technique, Alan Holdsworth for his chordology or Zappa for his compositions for example, most of 'm left like a footprint in my head. It's the way, how they do it or bring their music, that's interesting and I'm still learning from them, not copying, that would be another disaster…LOL
It's all those combinations that shape my work and I try to make the best out of it, not in one song or album but for me to have a wider range of possibilities to work with. It's amazing how I realize that the more I know musically the more I have the need to learn…one theory leads to another and so on. I think many musicians recognize themselves here ;-)

Originally plans were for the CD to be out in December of last year, but with fantastic vocalist Alain (Ex Ritual) coming on board, things have understandably been delayed slightly to allow the reworking of all the vocals, can you tell me more about the wonderful dynamic Alain brings to the music which motivated this decision ?

As a matter of fact we used to be in the same band called "Storm" back in 81', so I knew already that he could sing like no other, at least here in Belgium. I gave him a phone call, we met again, he listened to the tunes and he was in ! Alain's a very creative singer, he gives the songs a certain atmosphere and make it sound even more original. I think our long time friendship and mutual interests made it easy to work together again after all those years of independent experiences.

The variety to your music is astounding, complex and heart felt, with such a wealth of experiences and music to draw from what approach do you use when creating your own lyrics and music, and what inspires your message ?

That's the whole point, variety, I'm glad you asked this question ! I don't want to write a whole album in the same style, there's so much diversity in life and in the world, that's the message, and that's what I'm trying to put in my music.
Whatever the mood I'm in, you'll find it somewhere in one of the songs. There's no special method I use to write songs, usually I play along with a beat and see what comes out, work around that and that's about it.
Most of the lyrics are written by Alain, it's not just text on music…he captures the feel of the song and adds his own touch to it, and he's doin' an awesome job at it.

You have had the honour of meeting such legends as Ozzy Ozbourne, Black Sabbath, Helloween and Brian May to name but a few ! For many musicians this is a dream come true, what was it like to meet such Idols in the flesh and has this had bearing on your own work?

Yeah, I can say that I'm one of those lucky guys who has had the honour to meet some legends…
These were incredible moments and I gotta say, these guys are just like you and me, fun to hang out with, it's a life time experience !
We actually didn't talk much about music, it was more like havin' a drink and havin' fun, I remember jammin' with Pete Way and Paul Chapman in their hotel room on a tiny amp, poor neighbours…or havin' a drink with Brian in a bar and all those Queen fans outside the window asking themselves who the hell I was…or opening a door and tripping over Ronnie James Dio who was just sitting there on the floor, I think I asked him to accepted my apologies over  10 times…great moments !
But none of this had actually an influence on my music, it was just fun hangin' out with them !

You lived in Bali for just over a decade and now reside in Brussels, as well as travelling all over the world you have experienced many different cultures which also comes into play with your work, if you had to chose a favourite place to reside where would it be and why ?

The world is such a beautiful place, I've seen amazing places and met amazing people all over and it's difficult to tell my favourite spot, they all have their own charm in their own way…and there's still so much to see, so I don't really know. The globe is my home !
There's a slight preference though for South-East Asia, that's why I got stuck in Indonesia for quite a while…

There have obviously been many highpoints for you through out your career, what has been the highest for you to date and why ?

It's not really a happy one but surely the most memorable one. A singer, big star in Indonesia named Nike Ardilla passed away in a car accident in march '95 and I was invited to her funeral overwhelmed with thousands of fans. I stayed at her parents house for about a week, it was amazing how many people came over to show their respects or send flowers and gifts, never seen anything like that !
I knew her and her family through one of the biggest producers at the time in Indonesia and talent scout Deni Sabri, he's the person who made me play one of her songs on national TV, and me just doin' that was my highpoint and an incredible honour ! !

At the moment you are fully focused on the new album, however there have been whispers of a possible tour to follow its release, much to the anticipation of you loyal fan base, are you in a position to confirm this as yet and if so can you tell us more ?

Plans for a tour are being made as we speak but there's still a long way to go to have enough gigs in the same country or city, that is outside of Belgium of course. The first in line will probably be Germany, but the U.S. will definitely be on the list too ! Sadly, you'll have to ask this question again in a few months…The release of the CD will be somewhere around June this year and will contribute for more bookings abroad !

As a musician what advice would you consider paramount for a new artist or band, looking to make a start in this minefield otherwise known as the music business ?

I would say, don't believe too quickly the promises that are made to you, you could be quite disappointed…
Read any contract you have to sign in a very thoroughly manner or seek legal advice if you don't understand what you're about to sign. I've done it and I'm still doin' it.
Never give up, whatever happens…move your butt, keep on playing and making contacts…
And there's no secret to it, you have to practice, practice and practice your instrument even more…

With so much love for music and passion for life what are your plans for this year, and the long term future ?

This year will be a great one, the release of a video, the release of the CD, a music festival in Croatia for the Abandoned Children in Bulgaria for which I donated a song for a compilation CD, I also made a song for the Randy Rhoads Project CD (another good cause, I've a blog on my page about those two projects), a tour in Germany somewhere in the last quarter of the year, lotsa stuff comin' up for Chaos Curbs and there's also those side projects goin' on with Alan and Robbie…enough to keep me busy for a while. I can't say much about the long time future but I can tell you that it will rock !

Finally do you have a special message for all of your fans ?

I'd like to thank each and everyone of 'm, for the love, for believing in us and supporting us, without these awesome guys and gals we wouldn't be here ! If we have the chance to meet in person, we'll have a drink and fun ! I'd like also to thank Jade, Doc and the whole crew at Broadcast Asylum, Ang at K94Rocks and all the kickass radio stations that play our music, bringing us closer to the fans and sharing our music with all their listeners worldwide, you guys truly rock ! And of course thank you Nocta, for this interview, I enjoyed every second of it ! Love you all and hope to cya at one of the gigs !

Thank you so much and I wish you every success for the future, Much Metal Love Nocta x

A couple of months ago my friend Nella saw a movie about Abandoned Children from Bulgaria...
Her own country, Croatia, has been in war for some 6 years, but she never ever saw something horrible as that...
She can not imagine not to be involved in helping those kids out somehow..
So she made a myspace page for Bulgarian's Abandoned Children.
As well as a petition to stop that horrible torture against those poor and helpless kids..  Please, take a minute to sign this free online petition  !!!

Sign the petition here

She's also supporting bands and musicians.
Her goal is to give a "Benefit Concert" next year and to release a CD for the Abandoned Children.
She's hoping on some contribution from her artist friends with one of their songs for the upcoming CD which will be released early next year !

These are Nella's myspace pages :

Nella's page

Nella's page for Abandoned Children where she'll have a weekly featured artist !
