Review - Time For Tea
uk music review
Female London trio Tiny Tigers are a band bashing out spirited
indie rock, refreshingly free of polish and slickness. TIME FOR TEA
is a collection of kitchen demos and studio sessions and finds the
band on raw and energised form, all snarling guitars and melodic
vocal melodies, their description as a mix of Altered Images meets
the Pixies with a dash of Blondie for good measure pretty much spot
on.
Songs like SORT IT OUT and STOP TALKING set the tone swiftly,
Tiny Tigers all about the buzz sawing guitars, frenetic drum beats
and frantic vocals, the trio clearly in thrall to seventies punk
outfits like the Buzzcocks, The Slits and The Raincoats. ESCAPE THE
HUM sees the trio hinting at more diverse sounding directions,
effects laden guitar work and a slower burning intensity shot
through the usual snarling punk rage.
DANCE WITH ME is a more melodic sounding affair, those Blondie
influences rising more to the fore, Tiny Tigers unleashing a
euphoric chorus amidst the noisy guitars and growling bass rumbles
whilst on REPETITION there are certain echoes of Elastica's
Connection in the chipped guitar chords and syncopated rhythms.
Closing number here, ON THE INSIDE is the clearest indication that
Tiny Tigers are a band only just beginning to explore their sonic
possibilities, interweaving vocal harmonies and hook laden riffs
calling to mind the power pop of The Bangles.
An enticingly short, sharp and boisterous sounding EP, TIME FOR
TEA finds Tiny Tigers delivering six songs that excite and engage
from the get go. Refreshingly raw sounding and energised, these
demos and studio sessions show the band in early embryonic form and
as such perhaps offer only a glimpse as to the bands real
potential, but as an early snapshot of the band, this is
thrillingly visceral and exciting sounding stuff.
