RYYP:
*What's the name of your band? What's the origin of that name? Have you changed the band's name before?
For those of you who don't know...we are Americult. It's a combination of the words " America " and "cult"... the meaning behind it should be self-explanatory.
An earlier incarnation was called Leading the Blind.

RYYP:
*What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
We'd probably be placed somewhere between hard rock and metal, but we're always open to experimentation. Influences on our sound are bands like Mudvayne, System of a Down, Nothingface, American Head Charge, Slaves on Dope, Killswitch Engage, The Dillinger Escape Plan...those are just a few. We're all open-minded towards many other genres of music as well, but those mentioned are simply the bands have had the most impact on our style so far.
----
RYYP:
*How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?
Well, we've been a band for about 5 years now, and we've known each other a few months longer, but we pretty much met in high school and became friends on the basis of forming a band together. Adam and Stephen have known each other and been jamming together since middle school.
----
RYYP:
*When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?
Americult was formed in August of 2003. We all listened to similar music so it just made sense for us to make music together.
----
RYYP:
*Do you have a record label? Are you a member of any music organizations?
No record label for right now. We've been managing ourselves since day 1. So far we've recorded two demos and we're currently in the process of recording our full-length debut. We're going to continue with our "do-it-yourself" style until we get a good offer from a label, but we're not just going to take the first offer we get.

RYYP:
*What can you tell me about your instruments? (i.e., Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you
play with whatever's available? What made you choose the instruments you have now? Was it cost or was it a style/model/brand/color preference?
We prefer to use good quality instruments, but I should mention that we base that on our own standards. Cost doesn't make a difference. What really matters is if we feel comfortable with our instruments. Although, we did have to save up quite a bit for the instruments we have right now.

RYYP:
*Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
We're from San Antonio , so we've pretty much played all the venues there. We've also played various shows in Austin , Corpus Christi , and Beeville (with our bros in Seed). We don't really have a least favorite venue...it wouldn't really be worth mentioning anyway. There are a few upcoming shows:
Nov.15th in Victoria , TX at Fanelli's
Nov.24th in San Antonio , TX at the White Rabbit.
...and more than likely we'll be playing this year's Holiday Havoc show in San Antonio . Last year we had a blast...there were somewhere around 30 bands, three stages, and wrestling. Good stuff.

RYYP:
*Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list?
We usually play "Social Darwinism", "Panacea", "The Sacerdotalist", and the fan favorite "Nothing". Occasionally we'll cover Sepultura's "Attitude", System of a Down's "Suite-Pee", and Killswitch Engage's "Life to Lifeless". Our play list usually changes with each show.
----
RYYP:
*Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
The lyrical content is written primarily by Mark. Adam, Stephen, and Spider write the music.
The main themes of our songs deal with the many aspects of a dysfunctional society. This is also part of the reason why we chose our band name.
----
RYYP:
*Could you briefly describe the music-making process?
It varies. Some songs begin with one riff and we feel it out as a band. Others are written entirely by one or more of us before being brought into the rehearsal space. Different methods produce different results.
----
RYYP:
*What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?
We used to have set days and times for practice each week, but it has become more spontaneous. This is mostly because the "set" way became very routine and felt more forced than anything...forcing creativity is certainly not the right approach to take when writing.
----
RYYP:
*How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
There has definitely been a lot more focus on intricacy and detail. We like to throw in little things here and there without overdoing anything in particular.
----
RYYP:
*What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
Our biggest challenge has always been the fact that we were young and broke. We're still young, but at least we all have jobs and we're able to invest money into this band now.
----
RYYP:
*What's your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
Ultimately we just want to make music that we want to hear, but of course it's great to reach as many people as possible...so that's exactly what we're trying to do. Fame and fortune? Well sometimes its cool when people recognize you because you're in a band, and it would be nice to make a good amount of money off of your talents, but we would be content simply being able to make a decent living playing music.
----
RYYP:
*What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
DON'T DO IT!!!
Hahaha.... seriously though, just be prepared.
There's a lot of bullshit and drama that comes along with this life style. We've been screwed over quite a bit already, and we've each been through hell in our relationships...
But if you love music enough, you'll do it. But more than likely you won't be living a "normal life". It's kinda hard to mix the two.
----
RYYP:
*How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
The best way would be to go to our shows, we usually hand out demos. Another way is through myspace (myspace.com/americult) and/or youtube.
Just google Americult...you'll find what you're for.
----
RYYP:
*Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
Everyone who has ever been present at any of our shows. Thank you! Without you, we wouldn't have a reason to continue doing what we do.
----
RYYP:
*Any last words?
Support your local bands! Every band has to start somewhere, and when they make it big, they're always going to remember those people who were there showing their support from the very beginning.
