Current mood:Impermanent

This week finds us in the midst of final performances by two of our favorite NW bands. As news of good friends passing through like this is often delivered with a heavy heart, we are relieved to know that all involved parties are already producing or will go on to produce equally amazing and significant work in the very near future. "Significant" is emphasized because justifying their previous efforts as such, in this day and age, seems to be empirically distorted by the same media outlets that have nurtured these relationships from the start. Aside from the obvious relevance to our own personal culture, no greater cause has appropriately given us circumstance to the cliche "there is a time and a place for everything", and as such no person or thing can objectively argue otherwise. If you happen to be near either of these places at these specific times, we encourage you to witness the brilliance of our friends in their finest hours. As it would seem, an era is ending someplace, somewhere, and like us you just heard about it over myspace. Now and for the indefinite future, simply cached in time. Point, click, drag and drop, motherfuckers. All formations are impermanent.

H is for Hellgate perform this Thursday at the Comet Tavern in Seattle. The Braille Tapes perform this Friday at the Old Foundry in Bellingham.

Hey, you remember our 4 song EP that is roughly 22 minutes in length and sounds way better on vinyl, Sharp Moments?  Yeah, it was release way back in the May of two thousand and eight!!  Oh, those were the days, no?

Yeah, we know sometimes you just want the digits.  Seemingly, all of those ones and zeros get pretty lonely without more ones and zeroses.  And, some of us just aren't into the wax. Tomorrow is always a new day.

But, as of today, Sharp Moments is available on the itunes, here

Very truly serving your multi-generational and technologically advanced/inhibited needs,

Martyr Bonus LP - 2007

the Silent Ballet (US) - "While all the tracks on Martyr Bonus display traits of their peers, you never get the feeling you've heard it all before, a testament to the quality on offer. Whereas some math rock can be a little tiresome and incoherent, Panther Attack seem to have a good balance between freestyle noodling, fast-paced time signatures, and a sense of melody."

Angry Ape (UK) -"For an unsigned act, Panther Attack are punching well above their weight and succeeding. With superb production for an independent release, the stop/start dynamics are at times jaw-dropping. Near impeccable musicianship, someone sign this band and fast."

Sharp Moments EP - 2008

Radio Free Seattle blog by King Jill -"Again, this is much more than just mathematics, tricks and cliches. You can hear a passion for writing and playing throughout that I want to refer to as soul. And heart, not to be to cliche myself. But it's there and it's important to note. This band does carefully think out their parts and it shows as the compositions transition and flow smoothly making entire songs instead of riffs and themes haphazardly glued together which can happen in this genre."

Denver Westword by Roberts (under the Judas Priest and Bret Michaels reviews)-"...their EP is deft, light-fingered and appropriately edgy."

the Silent Ballet by Mac Nguyen-"Sharp Moments thus delivers its quick, edgy, volatile riffs with just enough hooks and changes to keep the mood alive throughout these four ditties, and no doubt is enough to keep enthusiasts entertained when hungry for a more fast-paced and exciting emotional drive. "

[Sic] Magazine by Michael Heneghan-"Without the bass and drum template, though, such guitar fireworks would be rendered useless. It may be an obvious statement, but both are crucial to the overall structure of Panther Attack's sound, especially given the ferocity of the complex time signatures and unexpected drum fills that push The Panthers in all sorts of different tangents."

As you know, shit gets rough on the road. Dudes drink tons of coffee and water to sober up and/or stay awake to drive long distances. And dudes' gas guzzling machine of transport isn't all that safe (the middle seat taken from a minivan at the local pick-a-part isn't even bolted to the floor), but we always know Thunderkiss is gonna make it... And, how, might you ask?  None other than our dashboard gang of mischief, faith, and terror.

cast

First we have bobble head Tiki. We know for a fact that Thunderkiss is purring smoothly at 65mph when it bobbles at a constant 200bpm.  We had the time, so we counted.

tik

Other idols on the dash include helical spring Jesus and a wind-up angel. So long as Jesus isn't flopping back and forth on the dash like a ping pong ball, we know Thunderkiss is holding up...

jesan

It is important to note that on the other side of Jesus rests the little yellow demon. Because, when Thunderkiss tells us "you better fucking pull over and put water in me, or I'll overheat in the middle of nowhere", this little yellow demon glows red with all of that fury and frustration. It's pretty far out.

cast

Nevermind the cracked windshield, and that it had a run in with Kelly's drunken hand outside of a Vacaville club. Thunderkiss was definitely acting more the fool that night.

If anyone happens to have any other idoltry to add to our collection that they would like to donate, we most certainly can find a good home for it.

Cheers, PA

Much thanks to Strix Vega for hosting us, Andy for booking the show and forwarding this article, and the Common Vice for putting us up for the night.

4/27/08 - The Pearl Lounge - Eureka, CA

This week was a full week.  We all sat by and watched as Tegan & Sarah plowed their way through town right before Death Cab for Cutie graced uswith their latest foray into the realm of major-label territory.  I could have written about Death Cab's lyrics that remind me of a note a girl wrote me in the seventh grade(seriously, look at the words to "I Will Posses Your Heart").  I could have written about Death Cab's opening act The Cave Singers, whose singer sounds oddly similar to Live's Ed Kowalczyk armed with a washtub bass.   I instead chose to focus my efforts upon something more local and close to heart.  Strix Vega headlined the Pearl Lounge Saturday night, and on their coattails rode locals The Common Vice and Seattle's Panther Attack.

The Common Vice took the stage first (yes the Pearl has a stage now), and offered up their usual dish of gravel-voiced, melancholy rock songs that make all us want to give Bret (the singer) a hug or buy him a drink.  I regrettably did neither, but I think he'll be ok enough to play another show regardless.  I thought for a while how I would comment on these guys as I've reviewed them at least a couple times before.  With a solid presence and an even more solid album under their belt, I was hard-pressed to think of anything about them that wouldn't leave me repeating myself.  So would "plateaued" be the adjective I'm looking for?  I guess there are worse phases to be in, I suppose; they could start to suck.

Panther Attack mauled us in the middle of our evening, giving us a dash of instrumental rock that actually held my interest for at least half their set.  Think Explosions in the Sky meets Hella, but with two drummers endlessly dueling and working with each other to create something that I'd only buy an album of to impress band geek hipster chicks.  As there were no lyrics to engage, they themselves were not engaging, forgoing any sort of banter or "please buy our merch, we need gas money" talk.  All they did offer, though, was a pair of earplugs to anyone who needed them, which is the one of the most proactive things I've seen a band around here do.  Now all they need is "Panther Attack" brand earplugs with their logo on them, and they'd be millionaires.

Lastly Strix Vega came up, boldly declaring that yes, finally, they can play a whole set without using any songs from "Drunken Sky," their one and only recorded testament to the art of song.  So instead of getting a taste of what these boys are becoming, we saw what they now are.  What they are is a group that is finally getting their voice.  No more genre toe-dipping with these guys.  Not to say that they've square-pegged themselves into any round holes or anything, I still can't tell you what genre they are any better than they can.  What I have noticed from them is an increasingly tighter and more organized sound that deserves to be on a bigger stage, in front of a lot more people, for a lot more moola.  I almost miss those awkward days of broken strings, clumsy pedal smashing, and songs that sound alike.  Almost like watching your kids grow up and move out, never to return your phone calls again.  Oh well, at least we still have our memories.

I used to not like seeing shows at The Pearl.  There was no stage, the lighting was peculiar, and there just seemed to be too many chairs cluttered around where the band would play.  Now there's a stage, peculiar lighting, and projector showing a video of roaming clouds like something from one of those late-night commercials selling us Pure Moods Vol XXIV.  So despite the pretentious look and prison-issue toilets, it's not quite the morgue I remember it to be.
