Earthless - Live At Roadburn Tee Pee Records
4/5
San Diego trio rock the Dutch with an inspiring set at Roadburn
A good while ago I received a CD through the post which had such extremely boring artwork and a name I had never heard of. Being so busy in the past few months, this CD got lost in my list of many things to do, and only a few weeks ago I gave the disc a spin to give me my first impression of what I was reviewing. It's around this time that I found myself tantalised for well over an hour, completely absorbed by what I believe is some of the best instrumental music I have heard in sometime.
I love myself a bit of post rock. Some I listen too just to try chill out and others just to feel the hair stand up on my neck. This, however, is something you can't just turn on for 10 minutes then turn off. This album, a live recording of the bands headlining slot at Roadburn Festival, contains two discs with one song on each, one peaking at 47 minutes and the other 35. You're either in it for the long haul or you can forget it.
The music this trio deliver in 'Live At Roadburn' is nothing sort of great. For over 80 minutes this band churn out a concoction of groovy basslines, intricate guitar work and relentless drumming, and not one minute in this album do you find yourself getting bored. The guitar work oozing from Isaiah Mitchell's instrument is impressive throughout the whole listen. At certain moments in this album I find his fretwork beyond brilliant, perhaps 'Blue/From The Ages', around the 26 minute mark to be precise, being a fine example. Not only do we have Isaiah laying waste to his fretboard, the bass provided by Mike Eginton provides a rock hard foundation to build upon, giving the music a constant groove. The final element that makes this live album so bloody brilliant is the outstanding drumming from ex Rocket From The Crypt drummer Mario Rubalcaba. The battery of the drums is ferocious throughout and the man's experience and talent just flourishes throughout the album, mostly taking centre stage along with the brilliant guitar work rather than simply providing a nice backdrop.
I seriously advise that everyone gets this record, jumps in to bed early one evening and just listen to this in the dark. Let your brain take in this album in one full listen and you will have one of the best live albums of 2008. This is a fact.

Earthless - Live at Roadburm Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com) Tee Pee Records Release date: October 7, 2008
The trick of free-flowing instrumental jams is keeping it interesting for long stretches of time. If there's a group currently out there that knows this better than Earthless, I'd like to know who it is. From my vantage point, Earthless is the cream of the psychedelic rock crop, and while that opinion was solidified well before I heard Live at Roadburn, the San Diego-based band's latest reinforced that feeling tenfold.
This two CD/LP release, recorded live and without any overdubs at this year's prestigious Roadburn Festival (You don't know about this? What are you, dense?), may take awhile to get going, but once it does, the band's impossible to stop. Disc one's sole track - "Blue/From the Ages" - shows the band (Mario Rubalcaba, Isaiah Mitchell, Mike Eginton) at their more improvisational, which probably explains why it takes so long for them to really warm up. Truthfully, they probably could have trimmed ten minutes off the beginning of this 45 minute beast (although at the same time, I'm not really complaining). The second disc offers a seamless merger of Rhythms from a Cosmic Sky's two tracks. "Godspeed/Sonic Prayer" is shorter – only 21 minutes – and more direct, picking up speed and intensity as it progresses to its godly climax.
Is this the album of the year? Maybe, maybe not. But it's definitely the live album of the year. Highly recommended.

Earthless – Live At Roadburn (TeePee Records) Keith Boyd 9.25.8
Earthless has always been more of a live proposition than a studio project. That's not to say that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed their recorded efforts. They pack so much sonic information into those grooves that you come away vibrating and happy. It's just that having seen the band live 3 or 4 times I know that in concert is where they explode. Therefore I suppose it's only natural that TeePee would release this blistering set from the MEGAROCK distortion fest that is Holland's Roadburn.
Although originally slated to play at a smaller venue a bunch of the usual Rock-n-Roll shenanigans ended with Earthless taking the mainstage and blowing them all away. Okay maybe a little hometown pride is seeping in here but Earthless are simply Monsters! How to even begin with describing their sound? It's equal parts Hawkwind, Blue Cheer, ZZ Top, Pink Faeries and every Jap and Kraut Rock freak-out you can think of. In other words it's just mind meltingly awesome! The three players have somehow melded their musical DNA and follow each other flawlessly. Each member contributes a mighty weight to the total. When guitarist Isaiah Mitchell hits and lick and bends the crap out of the knobs on his echoplex you can literally feel your head bend. Mike Eginton's bass has gone from heavy to beyond super-heavy with powerful low-end cajones you can feel smack you right in the face. All of this is wonderful but the piece de resistance is the octopus on speed drumming of Mario Rubalcaba. Every time you see this guy's name mentioned it includes his legendary pedigree. I'm going to buck that trend and say that in Earthless he has found his true calling. The dynamic precision and neck snapping fury with which he hits and guides the tempos of these tracks is a wonder unto itself. Now combine those elements and you have one of the hardest and most thoughtful hitting bands going these days.
The double CD is just awash in the sonic goodness available at every Earthless show. Although drawing from their albums for the set list I always get the feeling that there is an enormous amount of improv going on. It's what separates this band from the herd of endless riff-based "Stoner Rock" bands. This Hendrixian ability to take the structure of a tune and then derange it into a 20 minute + opus is a remarkable feat. Do yourself a favor and check out ALL of this band's output. I'd also HIGHLY recommend that you go get your face melted at one of their shows. Barring any of that though let me say this wonderful 2 disc embarrassment of riches should get stuck in permanent rotation in your player. Kudos to TeePee for recognizing (and supporting) greatness when it lights their ears on fire! .. --> InstanceEndEditable -->.. --> InstanceBeginEditable name="2nd-column" -->
