RECORDING JOURNAL FOR SPLIT CD WITH ULTRAMAN
by: Sal Cochino

Since the beginning of the 2009 Tim Jamison (singer of ULTRAMAN from St. Louis, MO) and Gizz Lazlo (singer of DEAD LAZLO'S PLACE) have been discussing the possibilty of doing a 'Split CD' together. It would only be rigtht to release said CD on only one record label, their former label NEW RED ARCHIVES (owned and operated by UK SUBS guitarist Nicky Garratt). Each band agreed to record five brand-new original songs and the sixth would be a a cover of each other's songs. Both bands had hoped to be in the studio by October but here we are in November and that time has finally come. The 12-song CD will hopefully be released by January or February 2010.

REHEARSALS
Monday - Thursday (11/16-19/2009) @ Lazlo Studio, NoHo

The guys spent the past four days preparing to record 7 or 8 songs with their old friend and producer, Paul Luke at STIKKY STUDIO in Sunland, CA. I got to the chance to sit down and watch them prepare by playing their chosen songs over and over and they kept sounding better and better each time through. XL and Gizz even said that, "this is the most prepared we've ever been in 20 years of recording together." They boys also said, "for the first time everyone is on the same page and we've never been more ready for a session."

We know there's a bunch we can't remember right now. Sorry if you were left out. We either forgot or don't like you.

IKE ROBISON
DEAD LAZLO'S PLACE
1995 - 2008

Since 1995 guitarst IKE ROBISON (aka: Flyin' Ike, Magnum, I Know Everything) has graced the many stages that DEAD LAZLO'S PLACE have played all over the world. But on Saturday, August 23rd the curtain came down for the final time with Ike behind it.

Ike leaves the band for personal reasons as well as some minor health issues. We're sad to see him go but we support his decision 100% and wish him the very best!

I'm especially sad to see Ike go since I've been honored to share a lot of stages all over the US and Europe with him. Be it with DEAD LAZLO'S PLACE, ELECTRIC FERRETS and a few shows with THE DeRITA SISTERS here in the States or the many shows we played all over Europe with BADTOWN BOYS in the early 90's. I always had a great time with him! He was my tour-mate. We sat together on the planes, vans and buses and many times shared hotel rooms and smoked some of the best herb people had to offer us! And let's not even talk about all the beers we drank together. Sheesh!

Every year since 1993 in mid-April I would call him to leave the same message, "Happy Birthday brother... and remember, we'll always have Berlin." I was fortunate enough to spend Ike's 30th birthday with him on stage at the KOB in Berlin while over 500 BADTOWN BOYS fans sang Happy Birthday to Ike and then sprayed their beers to completion all over Ike! It was truly a night to remember!

I have many other memories about Ike that are truly unique and some that may be considered horrific but I will keep those to myself. hehehehe...

So, if you have anything to tell Ike or have a memory you'd like to share with him, please feel free to comment below. Send Ike some love and tell him how much you'll miss him! I know the four of us will...

Remember, we'll always have Berlin.

Saturday - March 10, 2007:

FINAL MIXING DAY #7

*From 3:30pm to 11:30pm Paul and I worked on putting in lead vocal effects where I wanted and cleaning tracks and just making sure all noise was being kept to a minimum. As of tonight, everything sounds great and our mastering date is set! No more mixing!!

Sunday - March 4, 2007:

FINAL MIXING DAY #6

*We are almost to the "finish line". A few things were getting tweeked tonight as Paul and I prepare for mastering next week.

Friday - February 23, 2007:

FINAL MIXING DAY #3

*Today Paul and I finished all the mixes from 7pm til 11:30pm. I got home and listened to the mixes and realized that two songs on the CD-R are the wrong versions and there's still some shit that needs to be re-mixed.

Tuesday - February 13, 2007:

FINAL MIXING DAY #2

Monday - February 12, 2007:

FINAL MIXING DAY #1

*Paul and I cashed in the beer cans and bought us a bag of weed and we went at it mixing from 7pm til 10:30pm. We got about 3 songs done tonight.

Friday - February 2, 2007:

RE-RECORDING DAY #3

*I came up with an idea to add some female vocals to a newer song in this session. I rearranged the lead vocal part to accomidate a female voice. Only two voices came to mind, one lives too far to record here in California. The other vocalist I sought out is a good friend and has the pipes to make this work. Unknown to me though was the fact that she had never been recorded in a studio before. She was getting over the flu and with a tad of nervesness she was unable to complete her parts so I decided to leave the song as it was originally recorded. Maybe I can find that right Lazloette voice down the line and re-record the song for the next DLP album... Hmmmmmmmmmmmm... As for the moment all tracks are complete and now the mixing begins.

Sunday - January 28, 2007:

RE-RECORDING DAY #2

*A really good friend of mine, Jeff Romano came in to lend his finger work on a couple of songs. Jeff recorded some piano on two songs and put some Leslie Organ parts on another. This session really came out well. Can't wait to hear the final mixes to these tunes. Thanks, Jeff! Great work, buddy.

Friday - January 19, 2007:

RE-RECORDING DAY #1

*Paul and I decided to re-record some backing vocal tracks that didn't come out as good as we originally thought. We spent a few hours reworking certain parts to make the better and by night's end we accomplished what we set out to do. All backing vocals are now completely done.

Tuesday - January 9, 2007:

MORE ENGINEER MIXES - COMPLETED!

*Paul made some minor adjustments to the first mixes for the second round of the engineer's mix. Sounds a little bit better but some backing vocals need to be redone. Back to the drawing board we go!

Monday - November 20, 2006:

FIRST ENGINEER MIXES - COMPLETED!

*I got a copy of the first mixes today. They sound amazing! A couple of adjustments need to be made and then we should be done. New Red Archives already wants to hear it and few other labels have showed some interest. Even a major tried to get their grimey hands on the sounds of Lazlo! That won't happen as Chris has made sure of!!!

Sunday - October 15, 2006:

MIXING DAY 1 - 5 HOURS / 4:30pm-9:30pm

*ALL LEAD VOCAL TRACKS LABELED & EDITED

*ALL BACKING VOCAL TRACKS LABELED AND EDITED

Again, Ike and I showed up at the studio sometime before 3pm. Ike recorded his piano and keyboard parts and completed them so Ike is now done with all his playing parts! Afterwards we got down to business and recorded the parts for our final two songs! Ike left after he finished his last vocal tracks. Paul and I then set it up so I could add tambourine to a few songs. We were done by 7pm so we listened to what had been completed and agreed that as of today we are indeed finished recording this goddamned album! Whew... I am exhausted and honestly tired of recording! It only took 10 months!!!!!!!!!! Now let's see how long mixing will take! AAARRRGGGHHH!!! >>> 4 HOURS.

Friday - October 13, 2006:

Ike and I took the day off from work to arrive at the studio 1:45pm. We hung out and chatted for a few while we smoked and drank and some Bud. Steve arrived at 5pm and the party was already started! We began recording almost immediately crusising through all of our songs but two. Ike, Steve and I sang our harmonies and background vocals then just went ahead and recorded our gang vocals. We completed almost everything tonight and it sounds really good! I got really drunk and so did Steve. Ike never caught up! Anyway, I can't wait to mix this thing! >>> 8 HOURS.

Monday - October 9, 2006:

I got off from work, went home, grabbed some beer and my herb then headed to the studio once again. I put my beer in the 'fridge and reached for a water and a smoke then started in on that mic. In about 20 minutes I was done with the song I needed to do and then I also fixed a part I did last night. Paul and I re-listened to everything with my lead vocals and officially made it known that I am now FINISHED with ALL of my vocal tracks! Everything is sounding better and better everyday and now we have to go in and do percussion, harmonies, background vocals and all the topping that make a Lazlo record this coming weekend! Woo-hooo!!!! I can't wait! >>>2.5 HOURS.

Sunday - October 8, 2006:

In the afternoon I went to see the movie, AMERICAN HARDCORE about the history of punk rock in the USA in 1980-1986. Seeing this picture made me feel good about being a punk then AND now and what we've accomplished as a band and individuals! I arrived at the studio ready to make some headway at 6pm, beer in hand! Paul and I got straight to work and I sang for a few hours fixing and replacing vocal tracks, getting all of my stuff completely done! After fixing everything I needed to do we sat down and listened to what we'd done so far! Just one more song needs to be done over so I will be back tomorrow night to finish up! Yeah! Almost there! Whew... >>>4 HOURS.

Friday - October 6, 2006:

I got off from work early to be at the studio by 2pm. When I arrived I took a nice nap on my favorite couch while Paul fixed tracks on the last song I was to do. At 3pm I was up and rollin' finishing up my last song. After finishing my last track I began fixing parts of other songs I wasn't satisfied with. Paul and I worked our asses off until 11pm fixing and re-recording vocal tracks. I have a few more songs to fix and then add my final touches and wah-la... I will be done. I drank a lot of beer and ate waaaay too many hot peppers. I need a day off!! All in all Paul and I got a lot accomplished today! >>>9 HOURS.

Wednesday - September 27, 2006:

Well, my day started out good. I had the day off. The new Samiam CD is out as of yesterday! I've got a meeting or so I thought. I have a vocal session starting at 3pm... I show up, with lunch and we start recording at 4pm. Guess what? All my "lead vocal" tracks are done except ONE!!! I have one song left, which will be done when one Monday. Today was a great day! 5 songs done and that much closer to finishing this CD! I'm amazed at the work Paul's put into this project! >>>6 HOURS.

Tuesday - September 26, 2006:

Didn't get the call to come in until 8:30pm tonight and I was burnt! Another day of not recording! Yeah! I don't think this new CD will ever be done! >>>0 HOURS.

Monday - September 25, 2006:

Wow, it's been a while since there's been any action in the studio regarding this new record! I got together with Paul tonight to do some vocal tracks. I got here at 7:30pm and by 8:30pm we Paul was ready to push record. After working all day and a nice shower I didn't feel up to singing anything so we opted to rough mix what we have right now. I actually got a CD-R of 5 rough mixed songs to rehearse to. >>>4 HOURS.

Wednesday - September 6, 2006:

Chris and I went to Paul's at 8:30pm to record some pre-production vocals tracks for 2 songs I'm playing with. We came up with some ideas as to what these songs need vocally and called it night soon after we started. Paul was anxious to get back to his band's recording session up the road so I got loaded for nothing! HAHAHA!!! Chris and I had fun drinking together on my porch at least! >>>1 HOUR.

Sunday - September 3, 2006:

Andy and I were ready but Paul cancelled out due to other obligations! Shite! >>>0 HOURS.

Sunday - August 27, 2006:

Paul and I met Andy at 6:30pm at VoiceTrax West for another session of vocal tracks. I tried my hand at two songs but one was missing the right energy that I didn't want to deal with and the other was a lost cause due to poor tracking, which can be fixed during mixing. I wanted to get something done before we left so I went straight for the covers we recorded for this session. I got both songs done and by this time it was apparent that everyone was tired and wanted to go home. Today's salsa was my favorite place to eat - I won't mention the name because I was very upset by what they did! It was half and half (Hot and Mild) so it didn't work as well as it should of! I was deeply offended by the trickery bestowed upon me! Curses to you! >>>4 HOURS.

Sunday - August 20, 2006:

Paul, Rog and I drove out to Studio City to VoiceTrax West (owned by Alice Cooper's bassist). Anyway, we got there around 6:30pm to meet my main man, Andy Feliciano! We got up and running at 7pm and by 9pm I'd gotten 2 songs done. Slowly but surely we're getting there! This shit should be done by X-mas... 2007! HAHAHA!!! The salsa I used today was homemade my neighbor, Christina - thanks a bunch, you rock!! >>>2 HOURS.

Tuesday - August 15, 2006:

Great news! XploStevO is completely done with his bass tracks! Steve arrived at the studio at 3:30 pm and by 6:30pm he was done! Great job, Xplo! On Sunday I have my first vocal session at another studio in the appropriately named, Studio City with Andy and Paul at the board. >>>3 HOURS.

Friday - August 11, 2006:

XploStevO and I were back at the studio at 3:30pm ready to rock! Steve listen to last nights tracks and was happy with his playing. We began listening to the last two tracks that had to be done and in the process of recording them Steve decided that he wanted to approach these songs a bit differently so we started drinking instead!!! >>>2 HOURS.

Thursday - August 10, 2006:

XploStevO is the man! Today we whipped through 5 songs in 4 hours. Steve only has 2 songs to go and he is done, finished, completed! It was a pleasure watching Steve rock out today! His bass lines are amazing to watch and hear!!! Great job, brother! >>>4 HOURS.

Wednesday - August 9, 2006:

Steve and I arrived at the studio at 4pm and began to record immediately. Steve dove into 4 songs and got almost 3 1/2 done before Paul had to start getting ready for his own rehearsal with his band. Things are moving along smoothly for the Xplo and he should be done in 2 or 3 days. As for the guitars... they aren't completely done and some tracks do need to be fixed but this shouldn't take long at all. Things are rolling people so keep coming back for more info on the completion of our new record (CD for you younger kids)!! >>>4 HOURS.

Tuesday - August 8, 2006:

Ike and Chris showed up after work to record their solos and other parts to spice up their tracks. From what is said ALL guitar tracks are now DONE! Fuck yes!!!! Steve showed up for support and to hear what needs to be done on his parts that begin tomorrow. We're almost done, fellas! One more year to go! HAHAHAHA... >>>5 HOURS.

Wednesday - August 2, 2006:

Ike and Steve got together with Paul and recorded some more guitar tracks and from what I understand Ike is almost done! By next week we should have all the guitar tracks done as well as bass. >>>3 HOURS.

Thursday - July 27, 2006:

Chris and Paul got together without me today to finish up Chris' rhythm tracks. From what I understand Chris is now finished and we're ready for Ike to finish his tracks and then we're moving on to Xplo's bass parts! Once we're done with Xlpo we are moving to another studio in Studio City to record my vocal track, which shouldn't take as long as Chris! HAHAHA... Well, we're finally moving along! We're back in on Tuesday with Ike! >>>3 HOURS.

Wednesday - July 26, 2006:

Our session time of 4pm was cancelled due to the editing not being done in time so we weren't able to go in today to get shit completed. This is just taking too long to finish. AAARRRGGHHH!!! >>>0 HOURS.

Sunday - July 23, 2006:

Chris and I arrived at the studio at 1:30pm to a crusty-eyed Paul just waking up from his mid-afternoon nap. We pushed record at 2pm and Mr. XL got 3 more songs finished. Guitars weren't staying in tune and the remaining songs have yet to be edited so playtime was over at around 5:30pm. >>>3.5 HOURS.

Thursday - July 20, 2006:

Ike and I showed up at 5:30pm and by 6pm we were recording Ike's tracks. Today Ike got 5 songs done (one completely finished). Ike only has 2 songs to go and he is done with ALL of his rhythm guitars tracks. Everything is starting to move along quickly again! >>>3.5 HOURS.

Wednesday - July 19, 2006:

Today was Ike's first day of tracking and alot got done. Ike went to Guitar Center to buy himself a POD (version 2.0), which sound incredible. Joey's was a version 1.0 but this one has a few more items that come in handy. Anyhow, Ike arrived just after 5pm and by 10pm he had 4 songs in the can! Great job, Ike-o-rama!!! >>>4 HOURS.

Thursday - July 6, 2006:

Chris and I got to the studio at 5pm and got one more song done. This taking way too long!!! >>>3 HOURS.

Thursday - June 29, 2006:

Chris was back in today trying to record some more tracks. We really didn't get much done on anything because we were trying to figure some stuff out! One song was completed by Chris. >>>3 HOURS.

Tuesday - June 27, 2006:

Chris started his rhythm guitar tracks today. He finished 4 songs in 4 hours. Great job and it sound fucking amazing! Thanks to Joey Rimichi for the use of his 'Guitar Pod". That thing is absolutely amazing! >>>4 HOURS.

Monday - June 26, 2006:

Daver will be a no show today as well as Ike and Steve. Steve called me earlier to let me know that he had sliced his index fret finger at work today and it might require stitches! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! The fucking luck of Lazlo!!!

Sunday - June 25, 2006:

We all arrived at noon ready to go. Chris was feeling a bit under the weather but he did show up, which is always a plus! We huddled in the control room and listened to yesterday's tracks and decided on 2 of the 5 were worth keeping! Daver went back at it and almost finished the whole album. With the exception of our 2 covers he finished all his tracks! Chris left before 4:30pm for stupid personal reasons and the rest of us stayed and tried to help Daver finish his part. Didn't happen! We now have 11 of 13 songs done (drums, that is!) >>>5 HOURS.

Saturday - June 24, 2006:

We didn't get started until 5:30pm. Nothing was ready for us when we got there so we did a lot of sitting around drinking and smoking. By the time our session was over for the evening we had gotten 5 drum tracks done! All five members were there and we actually did have a great time tracking! Thanks to Joey Rimichi (Glue Gun and formerly of Jughead's Revenge) for the guitar POD. That thing is a Godsend! I wish we had two of them! Our evening was over around 10pm! >>>5 HOURS.

Friday - June 23, 2006:

Today was just about finishing the drum set up and getting everything organized for tomorrow's session.

In mid-December, Dave "Daver Down" Perry II (drummer since 2004) officially quit DLP. Since July 2006 Dave's time was being split with us and The Bad Sams, which got to be too much and for the better for all involved it was time to move on. No hard feelings and best of luck to Dave on his future endevoures.

Replacing him is our good friend who was recommended to us by Jerome of Burning Tree Records. Don McCurdy is one of the best time keepers we've ever had and we're very pleased to have Don in the Lazlo Family. He has played with MOJO'S RIB, THE BOTTOM-FEEDERS and more. His timing and attitude are a welcomed dream and we hope to be playing some shows to promote our new CD soon.

UPCOMING SHOWS:

Tuesday, March 13th @ STUDIO SUITE in NoHo with Cellphish.

Saturday, May 12th @ HARPER'S in Northridge with Kill Detail and more to be announced.

RADIO XENU - August 19, 2006

I met the host of an internet radio show, 420am, here on myspace about a week ago. He was interested in finding a band to interview for his show that coming weekend so he sent out a bulletin. I answered the bulletin with a nice reply and a few minutes later I received a message that he was indeed interested in doing an interview with the band.

Daver had to work at his second job, Ike was out of town and Xplo was at home drinking with his neighbors so Chris and I were the only ones left to do the this honors. I arrived at Martin's around 6pm to D'Andre cooking us fabulous dinner of my favorite meal... tacos! He actually makes a mean taco for non-Mexican!!! Anyway, I arrived and got my swerve on immediately outside on the balcony with Martin, D'Andre Chris and Krista (Chris' wife) while we watched a Bad Religion Documentry, which was quite interesting!

Anyway, Chris and I got fuckered up and then we went upstairs to Chris' place to do the interview over the phone. We called up and talked to 420am at Radio Xenu for about 2-3 minutes before we went "on the air".

The interview lasted about 40 minutes but only felt like 5. Chris and I were laughing our asses off during the whole thing! We played off each other very well... I hope! We'll see when the station posts the interview online! There were some things said that I still can't believe were said! Hey, Chris... who did you say looked "rockin'" again? HAHAHAHA!!!!

HERE IS THE LINK TO THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW:

JULY 29, 2006:

At noon Edgar and I went down to Lakeview Terrace to the Annual Blessing of the Cars where we ran into a lot of old friends and made a lot of new ones. Last year Xplo had his car in the attraction but this year he didn't bring his car. We ran into almost all of the members of BOURBON SAINTS new and old. My mom and dad came down and joined in the festivities. Sharon, Nat and Steve Light (I.D.K.?) were on hand and of course Xplo showed up also. Edgar and I hung out at the STRAYS booth with ex-LOS CREEPERS bassist, Frank and his Car Blub, which was a blast. Sam had his rolling and his wife Kristy and Anna were both laugh at all the dumb shit we were all saying! I also ran into and old friend by the name of Willy Gump, who is actually very funny and a great hang if you have the time! We talked shit for about 5-10 minutes and we were off!

At 5pm after watching a few fights, Calavera, Moonlight Cruisers and Candy Kane perform it was time for us to head out to Malibu for Jerome and Chelsea's Wedding Reception at the Malibu Inn. We arrived, drunk, just after 7pm to a parking lot of punkers and rockers!

We hungout with Josh and his crew from THE LAST PRIORITY, Adam from THE BAD SAMS (and THE ELECTRIC FERRETS) and his girlfriend, Veronica for a few before the club began letting us in.

At 8pm the party started with THE LAST PRIORITY performing as a 3-piece outfit of raging punk rock engery. Their singer somehow ended up staying in Jersey after their tour so the guys did a great job in filling in the blank spot!!

Speaking of blank spots - it was our turn to bring the rock! We played a short but sweet surprise set of 30-40 minutes for almost 100 people. Everyone looked like they were having a great time! After our beer drenched set we got off stage so the BAD SAMMYS could do their thing.

SAMS played their brand of punk rock in usual fashion getting the crowd to boil over with Eric's screams from the gutter! Their set was short also but the crowd ate it up! I was talking with Joey Rimichi and his lovely wife during the end of their set but I heard it was cool! HAHAHA...

By this point I was drunk and talking with everyone. I was drinking with Mike (bestman) and Jenna (Maid of Honor) before, during and after the BLACK FAG set. This band is cool but I really don't get it! You have to see it for yourself and tell me what you think! It's a'ight!

Jerome and Chelsea look great and they seemed to really be having a great time enjoying their reception. I was glad to be a part of it and the coolest thing is that 75% of all the money made at the door went to a children's charity! Jerome is the best for all his work for charity! Kodo's brother!

Anyway, at the end of the evening it was time for DR. KNOW to do their thing and their thing they did! Ismael didn't look to into it but the guitarist and Brandon Cruz were going off as well as their drummer! I really enjoyed myself during this set. So much that Mike and I slammed together for a couple of songs. Leo and Ann got just as fuckered up as everyone else but no one beat Edgar who missed most of the night as be was passed out backstage in a comfy chair that Leo carried him to!

Just before 2am we all left. I headed to Leo for a small after party, which included taco and some more beer. At 4am it was time to get home!

SPECIAL THANKS: Jerome and Chelsea, Mike and Jenna (from Idaho), and everyone else who came out to support! All of you people rule! Until next time... keep it drunk!!!

ABOUT THE STEEL PIT INCIDENT...

It seems everyone lost focus on what was really going on in the BLOG. This all became a forum where everyone started bitching and complaining and like I said I've never been down with that! I won't mention any names but everyone lost sight on what the real problem was.

I deleted the BLOG entirely because I thought it just plain became disrespectful to Brad!

Any heartfelt comments will be apprecitated towards Brad but all other with be deleted immediately.

DLP stands behind our decision and we welcome everyone's opinion... except those from stupid idiots and I hope you know who you are!

Enough!
