A complete triple threat, Proh Mic creates hip hop music that takes listeners on a ride beyond the stratosphere to the mythical Next Level. Rumored to have taken his first breathe on the same year that the best records were created, rapper/producer Proh Mic, born Michael James Jamerson is a second generation recording artist. His father Brion James is a musician who has written songs for BabyFace's and was a member of his band. He has worked on records for Tony! Toni! Tone! and also has songwriting credits with such accomplished R & B acts as En Vogue and Justine Timberlake. The inheritance of natural musicianship and soulful influences are evident in Proh Mic's work. Identifying himself as an emcee first, Proh Mic is an artist in the mold of Jay Dilla, Kanye West and Pharrell, in which he not only rhymes, he sings hooks, plays instruments, and composes and arranges beats. Proh Mic began honing his craft when he was a teenager in West
Seattle, during the years when break dancing became a phenomenon. It was in the mid-90s that Proh Mic was introduced to producer Bean One and upon meeting each other they soon realized they shared the same passion for music and creative vision and soon formed the emcee/producer duo "Footprints". "Bean showed me how to flip the SP-12", Proh says explaining how he first started using a sampler "before that I was using 2 turntables and an 8 track". After making a name in the tight knit Seattle hip hop scene, Proh relocated to Los Angeles to establish his solo career. Since moving to Los Angeles he has become a sought after producer and songwriter working with members of Funkadelic and hip hop acts like X-Clan and Canibus. His work with the legendary hip-hop group, X-Clan has resulted in him becoming their in house producer along with Ultraman and the legendary ACL. He has licensed his music for independent films and national commercials including Adidas
and the U.S. Army. He also has released his own Street Heat mixtape series and has limited edition beat CDs in the hands of a lucky few hip hop aficionados and tastemakers in the L.A. hip hop scene.
The reason why Proh's music is attention grabbing to both music industry vets and uninitiated fans alike is that it is honest and innovative. He treats making music as more than a mere hustle, but as storytelling compositions. This reverence for music and artistic integrity has resulted in him developing a unique style. Although his music is diverse in moods, ranging from soulful grooves, cinematic epics to street bangers, he always maintains a signature sound. Listeners always notice and comment on the fluid swing of the drumbeat, the deep elastic groove of the bassline and the harmonic use of samples. It's best described as future funk that is undeniable because it's rhythm is primal.
