I think anybody can rap, but not everyone can be an MC. That's what it should say in the caption above, the greatest MC's of all-time. But like Nas said I "made you look"! There is no science to this and many opinions abound, but I'm cool with my picks. Before I start, I have to shout out greats from the past: Run-DMC, LL Cool-J, Rakim, Scarface, KRS-One and Big Pun among others. And Big L (RIP) was ridiculous. All of these guys paved the way for so many aspiring artists. Now, let's have some fun. And since I believe you should always save the best for last we'll start at #10.

T@z

10. Andre 3000. "I dont think people really understand how good Andre really is. No disrespect to Big Boi, but he is "Outkast". He is without question to me the most underrated rapper in history."

9. Snoop Dogg. "All you need to do is listen to "doggystyle". That album was crazy. Snoop was on top of his game and has had tremendous longevity along with some serious collaborations. He's an appreciator of music from the past too. What is westcoast rap without Snoop?"

8. Busta Rhymes. "An adrenaline rush. If you ever had the priviledge of seeing him live like I have you really appreciate him. He's filthy on the mic. His rapid-fire delivery really inspires me."

7. Ludacris. "I like Luda's chances against anybody... Dude is sick. Crazy witty, with phenomenal wordplay. Incredible lyricist. There's something about us Virgo's (lol)."

6. Nas. "We share the same birthday- September 14th (hey!!), and I would rate him higher if he was commercially bigger, but Nas is the heaviest rapper of all-time. No one has ever been deeper than "God's Son". And as he showed you against Jay, you have a problem with him if you provoke him. A word master."

5. T.I. "I'm a huge fan of T.I., and I really admire his intensity. His approach is very intelligent and determined... What people don't understand is how very brave he is. Took southern rap to unprecedented heights.. I really, really like that guy."

4. 2-Pac. "He is the most powerful MC ever. Ever. He is easily the most prolific artist rap has ever seen and its most compelling. Larger than life, he was bigger after his untimely death. They'll never be another like him."

3. The Notorious B.I.G. "I might get roasted for rating him here, but its what I feel. Had he lived- there is no doubt in my mind he would be #1. Unmatched wit, style, personality... Silky-smooth voice.. A real joy to listen to. His genius was so great that he gave birth to a whole legion of MC's, including the top 2 on my list.

2. Eminen. "White rapper in a decidedly black field from Detroit. Hmmm... Its like being an american soldier walking amongst Al Queda with a loaded weapon. He has the kind of guts of a burglar looking to rob the Federal Reserve Bank in broad daylight- with no mask. His worldwide domination of Hip-Hop, his audacity and tenacity is almost hard to believe. I would pick him to beat ANYONE in a battle, I don't give a damn who it is. He's as very rare as it gets."

1. Jay-Z. "Not only is Jay my favorite, but probably yours too. And if he isn't- listen until you change your mind. I was guilty of as he put it "taking the single and singling it out to be the meaning of what he's about". He is the most devastating rapper this world will ever see. What he's done commercially will never be matched- he's in every demographic, and he's made the most versatile array of Hip-Hop/Pop songs than anyone else. He's a lottery ticket with each effort, with a complicated- but effortless delivery. He's Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. A masterpiece.

Provocative. Controversial. Alluring. Fascinating. Some of the many words one can use to describe the enigmatic T.A.Z. He is at times (at least to me) a darker and more animated version of a young Jay-Z, a comparison that is discernable (and one he doesn't like). But this is no mere facsimile, he does quite enough to distinguish himself in this regard due to his astounding versatility. Raised by a hellraising party animal of a mother- he was a product of the streets at 10 and no longer a virgin at 12. A child prodigy, he had successful runs in broadway themed plays starring as "The Scarecrow" in "The Wizard of OZ" and as Pinocchio in "Pinocchio", showcasing a high tenor voice. Was the lead singer of a boys group named "Fresh Force", patterned after New Edition. But the lure of the streets proved to be too much and he would abandon music entirely. Hot-tempered and fiercely independant, he was moved to Las Vegas where he found solace among "Crip" gang members. Was able to somehow find a way to become an honor student and outstanding athlete on the football field.**** Upon arriving back in Jersey he became an award winning essayist and New Jersey State Youth Ambassador, where he would travel to places such as Montreal, Canada; London, England; and Moscow, Russia for youth peace summits as a representative of the United States.**** Was a 2-time New Jersey State Champion Debater, Student Council President and Florida State University bound (until the death of his Aunt Ruth and killing of high school sweetheart, Jadana- events which occurred within weeks of each other). He enlisted in the Marine Corps, but was released due to misconduct (he declined comment about this)****But it's his singing voice, a voice so unique and presented with remarkable ease (Michael Jackson does come to mind, he sang for me right on the spot) that adds an element of intrigue to an artist that this writer has never seen. He is a powerful lyricist, with a plethora of styles- and moods. I found him to be charming, arrogant, extremely articulate and kind. Somehow you just cant help but like him. But you can tell that he walks with an egde, as if something haunts him. He seemed to me a pilot light that doesn't need to be anywhere near gas. Which is really interesting when you consider he can go from being a teenager to a middle-aged man in the span of minutes. I gathered all of this about him in a little over an hour. Super-talented, brash and full of ambition- get ready for an adrenaline rush.****Samantha Levine/Freelance Journalist

You're gonna love me

I just want you to love me

Do something simple like hug me

Hold me as I struggle as I hustle you'll love me

Get chu to the point where you get real sick of me (yop)

That's the goal, then I've done my job

In high school- was cool, all the in chicks dug me

Drive by guys wit they shots couldn't touch me

Gotta thank GOD man some nights was real ugly

Thugs bustin, slugs buzzin, mom cussin- GOD TOUCHED ME

How else, can you explain my ability?

Was late on my utilities, plus I studied futility (but)-

The gift of music got me walking wit nobility

Now wit every foot I lift I sift toward tranquility

TRAINED as a boy to absorb what was killing me

BLAMED when I push da peddle to the floor- are you kiddin me!?!?

Hey just for kicks I got a one question quiz

What's the one component missing in this world where I lived?

You gone love me.

I know…  someday…  you're gonna love me

I know…  someday…  you're gonna love me

When I was a kid at da crib I didn't play wit crayons

Polyester ass pants man shirts was rayon

Got my rave on wit white chicks in ray-thin thongs

We smoked weed in these makeshift bongs- hold on… whoa

Shit is crazy but before you go ape

Outside its 88* I'm fuckin wit a chick 28- but wait!

Add to the fact she older 2 x 8

And how the fuck am I to know I'm just a victim of rape?

When hate replaces love you embrace it as such

And I know it should be GOD but in guns we trust

Still you fuckers always quick to come and judgment rush in a seat plush but come and spend a day wit us

Is it too much to ask? I mean for real I don't want much

A clean pair of draws on my ass, a haircut

I took you on a path to my past in this cut

But past it now, I'm a bastard found-

You gone love me now.

Repeat chorus>

I'm from the Queen City baby so of course I had a Queen

Lean, hurt a pair of jeans- every niggaz wet dream

Get work; work a fiend, net worth overseas

Breathe for her like a fiend

Lose it all, then your Queen

Someday's I swear to GOD it seems like a bad dream

And having tasted success I can tell you aint what it seems

I mean- what good is gleam when the free air you breathe is worth more than the gleam?

I'd give anything to see her breathe

From where they chase those means-

Pussy, music or cream

A dreams' still a dream in the life of a fiend

NJ breed, reliving how she died because of creed

Some would call it greed, I recall she said to me

She was hot when she came out

Now she a VCR

She played out-

Now she needin CPR

I'm grieving as she studied bleeding in the ambulance car

But fortunately for someone she got an organ donor card

Please love me.

The following is a phone transcript with T.A.Z and freelance columnist Matthew Dougherty in the u.k.

M: sorry it's so late man you sure you can talk now?

T: yeah its whatever man let's do it.

M: well you sound really relaxed...

T: well the word would probably be "nice", but you on to something there (laughter).. whats up?

M:  i've had a chance to hear your work and it's quite impressive man. "Bring It Back" is ridiculous!! impressive indeed, very innovative to say the least. is it safe to say that jay-z is a primary influence of yours?

T: to a certain extent yes. but having said that- he's done that to a legion of people for the better part of the last decade and a half.

M: you say that like you knew that was coming (laughter) yeah? i mean it's the 1st thing i thought of when i heard you- almost like i was listening to a different version of him.

T: maybe you were, time will tell. i just go where creativity takes me and it seems to invariably connect me with him. i'm certainly not jay-z- don't wanna be. our life experiences are different, as is our approach to music. his body of work is better than that of any rapper who's ever lived, but i'm proud of what i'm doing now. i'm lookin to carve my own niche, and i'll do just that.

M: now you have an amazing singing voice that you begin to showcase on "rockstar" which is an incredible song, i love this song. what's fascinating about you is your ability to sing. what do you enjoy most- singing or rap?

T: they're both fun. singing is way more difficult to perform, but its easier to write. i mean.. if a rapper could sing, i'm sure he would. but it all falls under the category of music to me, and gives me a way to express myself in any emotion i'm feeling at the time. there are certain things you cant cover in rap that you can cover in say a ballad and vice versa.

M: now i gotta ask you this- i noticed that a lot of your subject matter is extremely violent or other times almost degrading of women. you make a great song that's positive, but then you have others that are rather harsh. you are not a harsh person by nature. can you explain your anger?

T: i mean... you have to understand, hip-hop is not about the art of the camouflage. its an artform that caters to what is raw in all of us. hence its popularity. i get artistic license to say some things that you may have always wanted to say, but either cannot or will not- because maybe you dont have the courage to. it is designed to delve into your feelings in an artistic yet brutally honest fashion. you capture moments in time, and you crystalize them. if i feel like i want to have wild sex with some girl, there's a guy out there that can relate to what i'm saying- and how i'm saying it.  if i talk about how i just want to beat the shit out of somebody for no reason- i'm being immature. but if i talk about shooting someone, who in righteousness had it coming, i get a pass from the guy that understands where i'm coming from. most violence is senseless, but in some cases it's justified. the justification is what i speak on. if that wasn't the case then i wouldn't be the nice person you know me to be. i'm sure if i opened up your diary, or anyone elses for that matter- i'd be in for a few surprises. when you become an artist in the most pure form, you put your diary on display.

M: wow. i hadn't thought of it like that. ok.. how would you characterize todays music? nas said that hip-hop is dead, and many feel that music has taken a turn for the worse. what is your view?

T: well maybe hip-hop as he knew it is dead, i think that's where he was coming from with that. but the only thing constant in this life is change- whether we like it or not. you have to be willing to evolve or adapt. the south certainly did that. i feel like today's musician is making more of an opportunity for himself now, and causing the industry to re-examine its arrogant approach to things. if you talk to someone who's from the 60's era for example, often times they'll tell you how much better their music was then. to me music is either good or its bad- as are the artists. i dont give a damn if its from the year 800. it is what it is. we all have different tastes, and so there has to be enough music to spread around to appeal to those different tastes. hip-hop is still a relatively new genre of music thats still finding its way.

M:  what are your immediate goals for your music and how far do you see yourself going- are you planning on coming over to the u.k.?  i've heard you speak of that.

T: every now and then this feels like work. when it does- i stop. this time in my life now will mean more to me in time, because the realization of your work coming to life is magical to me. my audience- whoever they are, determine how far i'll go. i'm completely devoted to my music in a way thats based on nothing but love. and because she knows i love her- she'll love me back. in her own way.

M: alright man that's good stuff- when you coming back over here?? we got lots of people for you to meet. and you can come see what real football is about (laughter)

T: nah man the best football is still played right here homeboy. you can keep your soccer!! i'll see you soon though. i'm not exactly sure when, but i will.

M: alright taz i'll call you next week i know you're tired man.

T: yip.
