Review from www.myspace.com/streetvoice September 2007.  We think it was a nice review!

My Scene: This all female Norwich band describe themselves as pop punk but I see them as a full on punk band myself. Their sound on this four track EP can be described as Garbage meets Bikini Kill. Both bands I have a lot of respect for and I can see why these have played some great support slots with the likes of Stiff Little Fingers and the Damned. Opening up with 'Ticking Bomb' this release flows well with some good numbers on here such as 'My Scene', 'Done It Again' and 'Inside Out'. While so mnay all female acts in the UK tend to go diown the Riot Grrrl route of playing as awful as possible the same can't be said of this band. The musicianship on this release is pretty good. A band certainly worth looking out for especially as they have a great DIY ethic as you will find out on hearing this EP. 7.5/10

Hey if you weren't there you missed a great night!  Washed Up played their best set yet, Dirty Love are a damned good band and the Ballistics got even my feet dancing and I really can't dance to ska!!  And of course there was us - and we ain't too bad!  Also if you have not been to B2 then shame on you.  It's a great little venue, clean (for a change) and really friendly.  The sound there has improved no end and is now top notch - Jake is doing a great job.  The UK Subs are playing there on 13th June with Red Flag 77 and Stray Bullets.  No excuses for the plug, I just think you should go!!!

Following on from Street Voice's nice review of My Scene, we have done an on-line interview which them.

Compact Pussycat Interviewed - May 2008 ..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I came across all female Punk band Compact Pussycat last year on My Space and liked what I heard. They sent me their CDEP 'My Scene' for review and on the back of that I finally got around to this long over due interview with them. Here's what they had to say for themselves.

Street Voice: Can you first introduce Compact Pussycat to the world and tell our readers who does what in the band?

Compact Pussycat are:
Becky – vocals
Jen – Guitar and backing vocals
Helen – Bass
Ella - Drums

Street Voice: How did the band name come about?

We were stumped for a name and our first singer suggested the name Compact Pussycat. It is Penelope Pitstop's car in the Wacky Races. No-one thought of anything better so it stuck. Please do not get us muddled up with the Pussycat Dolls – we are in a different league!

Street Voice: Did you set out to become an all female band or did it just happen that way?

Yes, the band was formed as a conscious decision to be all female. Jen used to play sax in PMT with Ella and so Compact Pussycat evolved from that when she decided to learn guitar to play her own stuff and roped in others, including Helen.

Street Voice: You have a sound that reminds me so much of Garbage meets
..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Bikini Kill so is this something you set out to do or did your sound just evolve?

The sound we have just evolved through experimenting when learning to play. We take influences from everywhere but we have tended to err on the heavier side. We never wanted to sound like anyone else, but comparisons are always made with other female fronted bands.

Street Voice: You released a pretty cool EP last year so any releases planned for this year?

Thanks so much, glad you like it. We have 2 tracks on a compilation EP just released called Gangsta's Corner, which was put together as a dedication to Dug (Jen's boyfriend and bass player in Visual Offence and Semtex) and his father Pete, who died last year.

For full details of how to buy the CD (only £5) please go to Gratuitous Beaver on MySpace, there is a direct link from both our website www.compactpussycat.co.uk and our MySpace www.myspace.comcompactpussycat

Ticking Bomb was specifically written for Dug by Jen and is one of our most personal songs.

For those not in the know Dug was the bassist of Visual Offence who sadly sadly passed away after having a second brain haemmorage. His father passed away not long after.

Street Voice: Compact Pussycat have shared some stages with some of the bigger names in punk rock like Stiff Little Fingers so how did those support slots come about?

Jen got off her arse and plagued! If you don't ask you don't get.

Street Voice: Being an all female band do you ever get any snidey comments just because you're not guys with 6 foot mohawks?

People are generally pretty cool, if a little bemused at first. We always get good feedback when we've played. Of course we've felt the odd sexist attitude from some people, but it's so old hat we just laugh.

Street Voice: What's the scene like in your area? Is it thriving or flat on it's arse like many other areas in the
UK?

There is a flourishing scene in
Norwich, many of the bands we know are fairly cool, however there is a bit of a clique like anywhere else.

Street Voice: You all look as if you like a bit of a laugh so any good stories to share?

We have a mate who comes along to our gigs and also loves to entertain (Sue from PMT and TCR). One time we played a gig at a pub in a small town in Derbyshire that was just like a Working Men's Club. We were a tad apprehensive, but after Sue invaded the stage when the other band was on, insisted they played Basketcase while she sang and we danced on the tables, we went down rather well! It was a great night!!

Street Voice: Any of you play in other bands, write a zine, promote gigs etc?

We are Compact Pussycat through and through and a more loyal bunch of cats you will never meet. Scratch one and you scratch us all! So, no, we don't play in other bands, but we have put on several gigs over that last few years.

Street Voice: If you could share a stage with just 3 other bands who would they be and why?

After much discussion (this is the hardest question you've asked!): Placebo, The Jam and Motorhead, so we can use their great big amps!

Street Voice: So what have you girls got planned for the rest of 2008?

Recording, writing, playing gigs and drinking – sound familiar? We rather like Groundhog days.

Street Voice: Anything you'd like to add?

Thanks again for the interview – are polite after all! If anyone would like to send us free shoes, booze or make-up, please feel free to contact us at compactpussycatkicksass@yahoo.co.uk or through our MySpace address as before!!!

Thanks to Compact Pussycat for doing the interview. If you've not heard of them before surely this interview will be enough to make sure you do. Their EP is well worth picking up too! Great band and one of the better
UK bands on offer.

We would like to say a big thanks to all those who came along to the Arts Centre gig on 21st December and say sorry to those who bought tickets to see Strawberry Blondes.  Their cancelling was an obvious disappointment for everyone, especially at such short notice.  Thankfully Fletch Cadillac stepped in at the last minute to ensure the gig still carried on with 3 bands - thank you boys!  Thanks also to Strip Hollywood for their set, the audiance reaction to the addition of the dancers was somewhat mixed, but we thought it was funny!  The comments we heard about the gig in general was positive, so we hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

So we'll just say we hope you all had a great Christmas and Happy New Year.
