Current mood: artistic
Another one of my childhood dreams just came true. When I was about 12, at the very end of the Cold War, back in Russia, I saw a music video. It was "If the Russians Loved their Children Too". It had been copied from one VHS tape to another numerously, so by the time I got my hands on it, the quality was pretty horrific. Nevertheless I fell in love with the song and with Sting's music. I barely spoke any English at the time, but I was determined to learn and find out what the song was all about. Then came out "Mad About You" and became my all-time favorite. Ever since then, Sting has been one of the biggest musical inspirations of my life. A month or so ago I got a call from the Chicago Symphony asking me to come and perform for their annual major fundraising function. I marked my calendar and practiced my pieces. It was only when I got to the symphony hall for the event that I found out that I would be opening for Sting!!!

This year I went back to the Columbia College to check out and record some more pieces by young Chicago composers. I am posting my favorite track by Jordan Balagot. Enjoy! And be sure to leave feedback!

Hope everyone's Summer is going well so far! Not a chance for a vacation for me so far, as I am touring in the Midwest with a concert in a new town every day. In the next few weeks I'll be covering most of Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, and some Wisconsin.
I just posted a couple of new video clips from a recent performance of the Rococo Variations by Tchaikovsky. Feel free to take a peek and share with your friends!
For those of you in the Midwest, in July, I will be doing a few shows with a fantastic Chicago band Butterfly Assassins. So far we're lined up for Chicago, Cincinatti, and the SummerFest in Milwaukee. Stay tune for more dates.
On August 1st, I will be joining the fabulous Sofia Talvik at the Lollapaloosa Festival in Chicago.
That pretty much wraps up the update. Thanks for tuning in, and have a wonderful and safe Summer!

I've been privileged to be part of a remarkable recording project involving young composers from the Columbia College in Chicago. Some of the compositions were so beautiful that I decided to dedicate a couple of slots in my playlist to feature them. Please do enjoy!

My love affair with Italian Song began when I was six years old. I was watching a TV broadcast from the San Remo Festival with my parents and became completely mesmerized when the beautiful Romina Power came out along with Al Bano to sing Ci Sara. At that moment I decided that I would marry Romina no matter what. Reasoning that she was happily married (to Al Bano) and had two kids didn't seem to alter my determination. And I did live up to my dream after all. Well, at least partially... Couple of years later, I went to see them perform live in Saint-Petersburg. I brought some flowers for Romina and made my way through the security in the middle of the show. When I finally made it onto the stage, Romina took me under the arm and asked me if I would dance with her.... So, that was my very first time on stage with an Italian pop star. And the most recent was this past week. With Andrea. I lived through some of the happiest moments of my life sharing the same stage with him, listening to him sing, and making music with him. In my world, beautiful music is exempt from criticism. As long as it is beautiful.

Usually it takes something really special for me to drop everything, and sit down to write a blog entry... Something significant enough for me to feel an urge to share it with the whole world. I woke up this morning at the crack of dawn, quietly made myself a tea and climbed up on the roof-deck of the building.... A cold front had just passed through Chicago the night before, and after a week of hot sticky weather it was quite a change... The air was so fresh, that after the first breath, my body and brain went into a sort of sweet shock, the kind you get when you get an unexpected kiss from someone you really love. The air was so pure that I could still taste in it the freshness of the Arcitc Ocean, where it was born, just a few days ago, still unspoilt by long exhausting travels. Then I looked up and saw the same view that fascinates me every morning: the Lincoln Park, the Lake, the Downtown with Sears Tower to the right... Except this morning everything looked much sharper, brighter and much more three-dimensional. Almost as if I were wearing some sort of amazing polarized glasses.... There are some experiences in life that don't seem to wear out their powerful impact, no matter how many times you relive them. Listening to Mozart's Requiem, flying above the Earth, taking walks with my son, and watching Chicago in the morning are some of the things that do it for me.

i am at a festival outside columbus ohio. these are some of the most peaceful days ever. my stress level is 0.008%. everyone is so kind to me that i feel like i might become completely unfit for outside life by the time i have to leave. like an astronaut that has been in weightlessness for too long, oops.. forgot how to walk. the landscape is quite beautiful, in its simplicity and straightforwardness. i take walk up the mountains every morning, and each one is a journey of self-exploration. used to be my most dreaded movie genre. now things have flipped. before i thought i had myself on the palm of my hand. but now sometimes i feel like there's a part of me that i don't even know. i tune into silence of the nature. i hear the music from inside. just like the songs of the space between the planets. the tunes of the space between eternities.

Never thought I would ever be writing a public diary. But today I experienced something that I have a very strong desire to share with the world...
... I spent most of the day with my son today. He's 3 and a half. He's the brightest boy in the world and my best friend. We spent most of the day gluing our R/C Cessna that had got some substantial damage the night before. Then we went out. He asked me to stop at Starbucks and get him a hot milk. The rain was coming down really hard and and we ran in as fast as we could. There was a little girl sitting with her mom, speaking in Spanish and sharing a gigantic piece of espresso bar, or something just as dark and inviting.
-"He-ey! I want some!!" screamed my son. -"Is ok, he can have some..." said the mother. -"I am sorry, we're going to have to pass this time" said I, a little embarrased with my sons straightforwardness. -"You cannot just come up to strangers and demand them to share their food with you!" I scolded him. -'You're right, daddy, I should have asked in Spanish..." that was his answer....
***
Then he asked me to sit down by the window. Fidgety as he is, usually he can't sit still for more than 10 seconds at a time. But now he was totally quiet and had a look of extreme contentment on his face. I was getting up to go and he said "Dad, just five more minutes! I want to look at cars in the rain!" And we sat for another ten, transfixed, just looking at cars and trucks through the thick layer of rain water coming down the glass. Some cozy swing-era tune was playing. And I thought: "Rainy days are just the same when you're sitting in a cafe, be it New York, San Fran, Paris or any other place"
***
Then we went to launch our Cessna that had just overcome some major reconstructive surgery. The rain had just finished. The little plane bounced a little on the red gravel of the baseball field and took off into the still evening air.
