Start With Yourself: Antonia Marrero Where were you born? I was born in Methodist Hospital in the BK baby (Brooklyn for those of you who don't know) and raised in the Bronx by Puerto Rican parents. What Kind of music moves you? Very difficult question because it honestly varies depending on my mood. Music is a huge part of my soul, heart, life and existence so it would only be fitting that it would change from moment to moment here are some examples: Metallica makes me happy no matter what mood I'm in!! Old school Hip Hop when artists really wrote lyrics and played with music tickles my funny bone. If I'm in a club and Reggae or Reggaeton come on it will automatically make my body catapult over to the dance floor and dance until I can't anymore. Salsa and Merengue reminds me of my Puerto Rican Family Gatherings so that makes me smile from ear to ear and want to dance the night away until the neighbors come knocking on the door. Music from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's (or any era for that matter) that I could sing with my friends or during karaoke makes me elated. Movies that have a slamming soundtrack make me inspired to create from the heart such as ANYTHING Quentin Tarantino, Dirty Dancing or New Jack City. Live Jazz, African Drums and Musicals make me proud of my chosen career path and make me want to get better and better at it because I feel them in my heart. Soulful singers (too many to list) and underground talented artists exhilarate me. Finally the songs that are putting a smile on my face right now are Run this Town and Empire State. What's beautiful to me about music is that it can invoke any kind of emotion in me. Some that I can't even describe. It brings people together that's what moves me. What part of New York do you love the most? There are many parts But most of all I will have to say the East and West Village. Because to me this area means Freedom, Acceptance, Life, Comfort, Love and My People : ) What Turns you on? Sex Appeal, Intelligence, Teeth, People who want to make a change and Talent especially if the person loves what they are doing no matter what it is. What Turns you off? Laziness, Selfishness, ignorance, abuse of ANY kind to animals, people and of course children, and hate. What Sound or noise do you love? My family's laughter, my cats purring, Planes taking off, Motorcycles revving their engines and the sound of nature. What sound or noise do you hate? Cars honking, burping, some bodily noises that people make in public in a rude manner. What is your favorite word? Perseverance, Love, Challenge, animals
What is your least favorite word? Hate, Can't, Impossible What profession other than your own would you like to try? Pilot or working with animals. What profession would you not want to try? Sanitation worker If there was a Heaven, what would you like God to say when you get there? Welcome, you did a great job while you were on Earth, Everything I imagined and more. Now let's get to work.....

My first encounter with R.Evolucion Latina was in June of 2008, when they collaborated with the Founder and President of Latino Flavored Productions, Linda Nieves Powell on the first annual Ultimate Latina Theater Festival, Executive Produced by Linda. This was the event that closed out the 4 week festival which was called Gracias Mujeres, a special night to celebrate Latina women in the Arts and celebrate the beautiful latin women in our community. I remember seeing this group of individuals and wondering where they came from. They immediately took over the theater and were ready to work. Unfortunately I did not get the pleasure of enjoying this event because I left after my 3 weeks of performances with the Festival to perform in Florida. So I thought shoot I am never going to see these people again. Boy was I wrong..... In December of 2008 I got an email from R.Evolucion Latina about these free workshops available to artists. My eyes popped out of my head and on to the screen!! I was looking to get some classes for singing, acting and dancing and here it was in front of me. I signed up immediately. And just like that on the last day of these amazing sets of workshops theR.Evolucion Latina Choir was born. At that moment I understood what this company was all about. It was a foundation for us to feel connected, take charge, be leaders of our life and communities, show that anything is possible. Suddenly I became part of the family. Since then I have been continuing my studies with William Wade who leads our R.Evolucion Latina Choir and Ian Hersey from the R.Evolucion Latina Shakespeare Project. I have also had the opportunity to show my gratitude by volunteering for Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS and R.Evolucion Latina’s D2GB Children’s Performing Arts Camp. There are not enough words to express how grateful I am to R.Evolucion Latina for all that they have taught me and all of the opportunities they provide for us. The passion behind everyone in this organization to create a beacon of hope to our community that if you want something make it happen, Dare to Go Beyond and be fearless, is truly invaluable. I know I am in the right place....

Getting to Know You
Where were you born? New York (Chelsea), New York
What kind of music moves you? I love all kinds of music – but nothing moves my soul like a good ballad. Classic ballads in Spanish, cheesy rock ballads, folk songs, crooners in general.
What part of New York do you love most? Chelsea, West Village: It’s where I was born. In the French Hospital on 29th St.; it’s now an apartment building. I lived in Chelsea until I was 7. I believe I have this gravitational pull there because it’s where I entered the world and it’s where I experienced some of my first views on differences. It was open minded and progressive, so that’s what it passed on to me.
What turns you on? Humility. Altruism.
What turns you off? Selfishness. Greed
What sound or noise do you love? A child’s laughter, especially my son’s. It’s innocence bursting through and reverberating in the air causing it to be lighter.
What sound or noise do you hate? The sound of abuse in any form: verbal, emotional, or physical. I can’t hear a family fighting, children being hit or crying or hearing their innocence being crushed with words of hate.
What is your favorite word? Beautiful
What is your least favorite word? No
What profession other than your own would you like to try? Advocate for children
What profession would you not want to try? Reality TV show participant. Unless it’s something that promotes change – and I get to host it.
If there's a heaven, what would you like God to say when you get there? Put on your wings (I’ve always wanted wings)& roll up your sleeves, we’ve got more work to do.
Annie’s Blog
Gabriela Garcia mentioned RL almost two years ago, and I remember thinking – if it’s a revolution count me in! I may have said it out loud too. It took me a year to finally make it to a meeting, but they’d been in my heart the whole time. Though my schedule didn’t allow me to be there in person, I was still rallying people to join the cause, talking about RL every chance I got.
I’m born and raised in this incredible city and have some serious pride for all that it offers in the way of diversity and biculturalism. It’s taken me a lifetime to understand what my roots are and how they impact who I am, never fully grasping the significance. I had always believed I’m an American 1st, Latina 2nd. As a New Yorker, it never seemed to matter. Then came the reality of becoming an actor – a working actor. There is a difference – to become a working actor means to embrace everything about you and honor it in your work. I couldn’t escape ethnicity; I couldn’t escape the “other” culture. Spanish, which was my second language, became an important tool, my looks or “type”, became an asset. I realized that there was no 1st or 2nd culture. I am all those things and it’s what makes me kick ass as an actor. Consequently, it’s what got me all my union cards - my fluency in Spanish. Yep, proud member of all three: SAG, AFTRA, AEA.
I’m a huge advocate for coming together and forcing change by example. I got tired of hearing myself talk about it and was looking for a way to take action. I finally found an amazing group of people who share that goal. RL doesn’t just sit in a room and brainstorm. They dream. They dream BIG. Then, they take action. One advocate at a time.
We can help each other. We can go farther. We can…Dare to go Beyond.
P.S. – I read this quote in a book I picked up today: “We rise by lifting others” Robert Ingersoll, scholar --

R.Evolución Latina Shakespeare ProjectRecently, the R.Evolución Latina Shakespeare Project had a visit from a master. Barry Edelstein stopped by to share his amazing experience and knowledge with us, while continuing to enrich what has already been a fantastic ride. An acclaimed stage director, Eldestein directed several Shakespeare plays including Richard III, starring John Turturo and Julianna Margulies, and Julius Caesar, starring Jeffrey Wright in Central Park's Shakespeare in the Park. He has taught Shakespeare at the Julliard School and was part of the Public Theater's Shakespeare Lab. Our actors were delighted to be able to talk to, learn from, and show their enthusiasm to someone who lives for the theater. Here, some of the students share their experiences.
Gabriela Garcia What an amazing gift and opportunity to have been able to have a guest like Barry Edelstein in our RL Shakespeare Project. I felt so inspired, empowered and educated by his passion for Shakespeare's work and by how open he was to our questions and comments. Thank You Barry for inspiring our R.Evolución Latina actors! Karina Fernandez First, it shouldn't go without mentioning that I am very grateful that Mr.Edelstein took the time to sit with us. His visit last week was an amazing learning experience for me. There was such a great exchange of knowledge between Mr. Edelstein and the rest of the students that it was hard to put into words how much that experience (as a novice actor) meant to me. Not only that, but the fact that I was able to put together what has been taught to us by Mr. Hersey and what Mr. Edelstein talked about that day (it was one of the "aha" moments of the year for me) made me all the more excited to keep learning more. It also reminded me that "Thinking Shakespeare" is no easy task and that it takes a lot of study and dedication but that it can be done. Thank you again! Mauricio Leyton Meeting Barry Edelstein, and having the opportunity to hear him talk about acting and Shakespeare in person, was one of the most enriching experiences I have had in a very long time. The depth of Barry's knowledge, and his ability to articulate ideas, concepts, and thought provoking theories, made the one and a half hours we spent with him, very valuable.
I believe our ability to understand and grasp Barry's teachings is based on the knowledge we have gained in the R.EvoluciónLatina class. I am truly grateful to R.Evolución Latina for providing us this experience, and to Barry for taking the time to come out and meet with us. Yvan Ruiz Thinking Shakespeare...thinking The word!
Barry Edelstein opened up a new way to think about the Shakespeare's verb, the relation between language and thought. Thoughts and action: because we need to have a real experience in scene.
Thanks Barry Edelstein, Ian Hersey, Luis Salgado, Catherine Lynch and everybody from R.Evolución Latina. Thursday, November 26, 2009

Oh…..finally you are here….Let’s go to work!
Yvan’s blog After I finished a writing workshop in The Spanish Harlem (December 2008), I saw an ad about a 4 week workshop series held by R.evolucion Latina. I was impressed by the phrase dare to go beyond and I said to myself, “That’s what I need to do…” Later I read something that Luis Salgado said, “I don’t like unconscious people who don’t really try beyond their limits.” I emailed the group and I took my first two classes: Acting Meisner Technique with James Price and Auditioning with Herman Chaves. Following those classes I took the second R.Evolucion Latina Shakespeare Project with Ian Hersey. Even though English is not my first language, I decided to take on the challenge of learning old English. Shakespeare taught me the beauty of poetry and prose, as well as why so many regard these writings as classic. Shakespeare also deepened my reading comprehension. It opened up a whole new well of emotions I can draw from in my performances. For example, I really felt King Lear’s pain when he held his daughter in his arms. I felt like I was holding my own daughter as I read and performed King Lear’s cries of pain. The classes also taught me the importance of being part of a team instead of acting independently. Working in groups, I drew strength and confidence from my fellow actors. Every class was a new experience and new opportunity to develop acting relationships. I was also invited to help in the D2GB Children’s Performing Arts Camp. The theme of the camp was also dare to go beyond. The children were encouraged not to say, “I can’t” but to say, “Now I can; I can sing; I can dance; I can do things I thought were true limits.” I saw many transformations that filled me with excitement and inspiration. I would like to thank Luis Salgado for coming up with such a succinct and transformational phrase. The words are important words to live by, especially for the Hispanic community living in the USA. When often for us opportunities seem limited, it is then that we must rise and break those limits.

Getting to Know You
Jaime Lozano
Where were you born? Monterrey, Mexico
What kind of music moves you? Any kind of music when it is well done and expresses something. From classical to pop, from folk to jazz, from tango to vallenato, flamenco, cumbia, R&B, gospel, etc. But my favorite music is latin jazz and salsa.
What part of New York do you love most? I love Times Square. I like to sit on Broadway in Duffy Square and feel all the light from the big screens on my face and see all of the diversity walking in front of me. Usually I go there to write, to compose or just to think. I sit there and visualize myself having a big billboard of one of my shows there.
What turns you on? Everything about musical theatre: seeing a show, watching a movie, listening and watching a singer/dancer/performer, reading a book, etc.
What turns you off? When people say, "It's not possible,” "You can't,” blah blah blah...
What sound or noise do you love? My daughter's voice and laugh (Ely Aimé is in the picture with me)
What sound or noise do you hate? A singer singing off tune. But beyond hate it, I love to be helpful in some way and find the way to fix it. At least with the people close to me. ; )
What is your favorite word? Amor
What is your least favorite word? No
What profession other than your own would you like to try? To be honest, I wouldn't like to try another profession. I know that I'm in the right place and I love what I do. I can't imagine myself doing another thing.
If there's a heaven, what would you like God to say when you get there? There is a heaven. God: "Hey, I think that now with all the experience and preparation you got out there we should make a musical with all the people in here."
Jaime’s Blog
I arrived to NYC two and a half years ago to study a graduate program in musical theatre writing and I was selected without speaking any English. It was a crucial moment in my life and I realized that I can do more than I actually think I can do. Other people believe in me beyond my language and limitations. After one year I met Gabriela Garcia on the street and weeks later she invited me by facebook to one of the R.Evolución Latina meetings. I went and I felt immediately inspired for all the people in there and what they do (not just what they say but what they DO). Unfortunately at that time because I was very busy with school -practically 24/7- I couldn't get as involved as I'd like to. But God knows the reasons and the why's for everything and that wasn't my time. Now, after my graduation and thanks to Luis Salgado, I found the way to be helpful and do what I know and I love to do inside this wonderful organization called R.Evolución Latina. I am proud to be involved in a pilot musical theatre program in The International Brooklyn High School, working with kids from all around the world who came to New York through another great organization named International Rescue Committee, who takes families from different countries in crisis and relocates them helping them to rebuild their lives. This pilot program now is doing one's bit and we are very excited to continue developing this program with my collaborators Jennifer Díaz and Jayson Rivera. At the same time another amazing program is the R.Evolución Latina Choir. William Wade and myself are working with such amazing people, performers from all different backgrounds and with very different experiences, but with one same goal, training them to improve their skills and be better performers. This is a wonderful free program that I'm sure is going to make a difference in at least in one person, and we're already ahead. Thanks to R.Evolución Latina and all of the leaders, directors, team, activists for affecting so many lives beginning with mine. Let's make a change in the world, just do your part...and a little more.

Yackeline’s Blog I identify with R.Evolucion Latina since my daughter Andrea told me how much she’s been inspired by the philosophy “DARE TO GO BEYOND.” It made me think that this is actually my daily phrase; I consider myself as a person that takes challenges day by day, I do not measure challenges. And absolutely everything that has to do with daring to go beyond deserves recognition as authentic and real to grow as a human being inside and outside. The best example is my daughter Andrea, who left all her amenities that she has with her family, and she Dared to go beyond by moving to another country without knowing anybody, friends, family, nobody who could guide her, and she went to study and prepared herself in what she believes she can overcome and advance to pursue her dream.--

Natalie Caruncho
Getting to Know You
Where were you born? Hialeah, FL
What kind of music moves you? Live music!! I am a sucker for saxophone players in the subway and guitar players on sidewalks, outdoors-- expected or unexpected. But the kind of music on my iTunes, is a lot of singer/songwriters. I love music that has heart and that tells a story, or at least takes the listener for a ride. Sometimes for me that means beautiful lyrics and acoustic sounds. And other times it means a great horn section and a bass line.
What part of New York do you love most? I had the chance to live in Greenwich Village during rehearsals last month in August/September of this year. And it just reminds me of Europe or Old New York. And I absolutely loved it. Cafes and bookstores and brownstones and cobblestone streets.
What turns you on? Passion.
What turns you off? Unwillingness to jump at a chance, that could turn out to be the moment of your life!
What sound or noise do you love? Baby's laughter
What sound or noise do you hate? Nails on a Chalkboard.
What is your favorite word? love
What is your least favorite word? Stress (because of what it implies..... there are other words, but it wouldn’t be appropriate)
What profession other than your own would you like to try? I'd love to be a Surgeon of some sort. And use my hands to help people.
What profession would you not want to try? Anything that requires day in and out in a cubicle.
If there's a heaven, what would you like God to say when you get there? You did good kid.
Natalie’s Blog
This is my first involvement with R.Evolucion Latina and I cannot be more thrilled. Thank you Denise for staying on me. I met Luis, at rehearsal for the TOUR of IN THE HEIGHTS, which is kicking off TOMORROW night!!! So life has been wonderful and exciting the past couple weeks but also crazy busy. I am so happy to be making this amazing connection. Luis is someone who walks into the room and carries with him a sense of being tapped into the stuff that is just bigger than the every day. And what I mean by that is.... actually something that I have been experiencing with this show-- That the things that matter, that really truly matter in our lives, are the connections to our family, to our community, to our roots, to the music that brought us here and moves us to dance and live. It is a lesson that I have been learning and relearning as I've been starting my career in NYC and moving away from home, and trying to recreate a sense of home away from Miami, FL. And when the world and auditions and work and the city gets too big and crazy, I'm all of a sudden made very aware of the fact that all I have to do is reach out to someone I love and the world seems to become tangible again. I have to say that IN THE HEIGHTS has been so extraordinary in teaching me this. Tommy Kail, our director, said to us Sunday just before our invited dress at the University of Florida, that this is the kind of show that if you invest yourself in it and give all of ourselves, that the reward will come back ten fold. We can and will touch and change lives and ours, in turn, will be changed. I had a moment on Sunday (our first time with a real audience) of “Wow, this is exactly where I want to be every day of my life.” I want to be on stage telling stories that move people and that create art and magic and hope and love that waves through everyone in the theatre. That's not too much to ask for right? I think this show has also shown me the importance of creating opportunities for our Latin community to embrace the power it has on the world, and to tell our story and the story of our parents and grandparents, and the places and traditions we come from. Because they are so rich with stories, and everyone has one.
So. It is lovely to meet you all. And I look forward to becoming more involved with R.Evolución Latina, coming to some events and having some fun! I am off to review my things before tomorrow's rehearsal and show. It is a crazy wonderful exciting larger than life moment in my life, and I am glad to be able to share it with you, even for just a moment.
