The Campbell Apartment
"Insomniacs Almanac"
(Headphone Treats Records / Blacktop Records)
"Insomniacs Almanac" is the debut album from New York's The Campbell Apartment, who were formed in 2006 and were born out of the East Village scene which produced bands like The Strokes.
Founder Ari Vais (Vocals, Guitars and Keyboards, was formerly a member of The Pelicans, who even appeared on the tv show Queer Eye for a Straight Guy, and he also appeared in the movie PS. He is joined in the band by Dan Haag on Bass and Dave Harman on drums.
The album has a heartfelt sentimentalism about it running through songs like Long Distance Relationship (is a four letter word), a very competent slice of melodic rock pop with lyrics which people who have gone through the very same thing can instantly relate to.
DNA has a light and poppy riff, with a great guitar solo, and a catchy riff, the suprising thing is the guitars are quite heavy for an album dealing with such topics as this,
River of Sound has a distinct OASIS feel to it, it really would not be out of place on one of their later albums, with strong drums, and melodic bass.
The title track Insomniacs Almanac is a short shong, which reminds me of The Beatles of Sgt Pepper era, part In My Life, part When I'm 64. Lots of violin and acoustic guitar.
My favourite on the album is a track called Addicted to Myspace - which is something i can fully relate to, a song which will stick in your head.....this song could possibly be a hit with people who feel they are addicted to networking sites on the web.
Overall verdict on the albums is a thumbs up. While it isnt two fingers in the air Punk Rock, most tracks have enough bite to dance to and even a few sunday morning hangover cure songs. Check out this album and you wont be disappointed.
