4/26/08 Dodgers VS. Rockies- Home plate umpire Kerwin Danley was hit in the jaw with a 96 mph Brad Penny fastball in the top of the 4th inning Saturday night. Don't know how Martin missed that catch. Danley was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition. Best wishes to him.

Current mood:  pissed off
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

Somebody has started to straighten some of these thoughtless and ungrateful people out. And I am even more grateful that it was someone serving in one of the branches of military.

Military paid too much? You be the judge!
This is an Airman's response to Cindy Williams' editorial piece in the Washington Times about MILITARY PAY, it should be printed in all newspapers across America.

On Nov. 12, Ms Cindy Williams (from Laverne and Shirley TV show) wrote a piece for the Washington Times, denouncing the pay raise coming service members' way this year -- citing that the stated 13% wage was more than they deserve.

A young airman from Hill AFB responds to her article below. He ought to get a bonus for this.

"Ms Williams:

I just had the pleasure of reading your column, "Our GIs earn enough" and I am a bit confused. Frankly, I'm wondering where this vaunted overpayment is going, because as far as I can tell, it disappears every month between DFAS (The Defense Finance and Accounting Service) and my bank account.

Checking my latest earnings statement I see that I make $1,117.80 before taxes. After taxes, I take home $874.20. When I run that through the calculator, I come up with an annual salary of $13,413.60 before taxes, and $10,490.40, after.

I work in the Air Force Network Control Center where I am part of the team responsible for a 5,000 host computer network. I am involved with infrastructure segments, specifically with Cisco Systems equipment. A quick check under jobs for Network Technicians in the Washington, D.C. area reveals a position in my career field, requiring three years experience with my job. Amazingly, this job does NOT pay $13,413.60 a year. No, this job is being offered at $70,000 to $80,000 per annum... I'm sure you can draw the obvious conclusions.

Given the tenor of your column, I would assume that you NEVER had the pleasure of serving your country in our armed forces. Before you take it upon yourself to once more castigate congressional and DOD leadership for attempting to get the families in the military's lowest pay brackets off of WIC and food stamps, I suggest that you join a group of deploying soldiers headed for AFGHANISTAN; I leave the choice of service branch up to you.

Whatever choice you make, though, opt for the SIX month rotation: it will guarantee you the longest possible time away from your family and friends, thus giving you full "deployment experience." As your group prepares to board the plane, make sure to note the spouses and children who are saying good-bye to their loved ones. Also take care to note that several families are still unsure of how they'll be able to make ends meet while the primary breadwinner is gone -- obviously they've been squandering the "vast" piles of cash the government has been giving them.

Try to deploy over a major holiday; Christmas and Thanksgiving are perennial favorites. And when you're actually over there, sitting in a foxhole, shivering against the cold desert night; and the flight sergeant tells you that there aren't enough people on shift to relieve you for chow, remember this: trade whatever MRE (meal-ready-to-eat) you manage to get for the tuna noodle casserole or cheese tortellini, and add Tabasco to everything. This gives some flavor. Talk to your loved ones as often as you are permitted; it won't nearly be long enough or often enough, but take what you can get and be thankful for it.

You may have picked up on the fact that I disagree with most of the points you present in your opined piece.

But, tomorrow from KABUL, I will defend to the death your right to say it.

You see, I am an American fighting man, a guarantor of your First Amendment rights and every other right you cherish. On a daily basis, my brother and sister soldiers worldwide ensure that you and people like you can thumb your collective nose at us, all on a salary that is nothing short of pitiful and under conditions that would make most people cringe. We hemorrhage our best and brightest into the private sector because we can't offer the stability and pay of civilian companies.

And you, Ms. Williams, have the gall to say that we make more than we deserve? Rubbish!

A1C Michael Bragg Hill AFB AFNCC

IF YOU AGREE, PLEASE SIGN AND PASS THIS ALONG TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE AND SHOW OUR SUPPORT OF THE AMERICAN FIGHTING MEN AND WOMEN. THANK YOU.

December 31, 2007 - Monday

Current mood:  apathetic

Well first let me start off by wishing everyone all the best in 2008.  I hope it is everything that you want and need it to be.  I think the subject of my first blog will be a look back, with commentary about things that have happened during the past year.  Some serious, some touching, and some just funny. Or ast least I think so.  Some of the topics will be local in nature, some will be national/worldwide, and some will be specific to my family, friends, and/or hobbies.  Without further delay:

NATIONAL/WORLD

1) Presidential Elections:  Who cares!  the bottom line is simple.  It doesn't matter who becomes president.  They all have one personal agenda in mind and that is to get the power and get reelected.  No one has any fresh ideas, and even if they did, the office of the president is powerless to do anything.  Its power derives from Congress and as long as we have a Congress that can;t use common sense nothing dramatic will get accomplished.  HMMM...Maybe I should run for President.  Lets see, I have some ideas:  Lets stop wars, lower taxes, improve the economy, improve education, and help the environment.  Sounds pretty good.  Of course, does anyone believe we shouldn't do these things?  Of course not.  I say get rid of all the politicians and start fresh with people who are high on common sense and low on "political experience"

2) The Economy:  It blows.  Pricces are too high and wages are too low.  Or better yet wages are not in line with the importance/education or experience needed for the job.  nuff said.

3) Smoking Bans:  I know you Cali people ahve been dealing with this for years and those of you that don't smoke don't have a problem with this.  So here is the deal.  I smoke.  I also respect the right of other to not smoke and not breathe in my smoke.  However,to governmentally impose a restriction on me doing something that is not illegal, is a slap in the face to my freedom.  I understand that a non smoker probably wants to go out and not have to smell the smoke.  But why does it have to be govenrmentally imposed.  Leave it up th the business owners.  If there is a bar owner and they want to make their bar non smoking. then they have that right.  Conversly they should have the rigght to make it smoking.  If the owner wants to forgo the revenues they could receive for non smokers or smokers then that should be their choice.  Whant about the workers who don't want to breathe the smoke you say?  They should get a job in a non smoking establishment.  It is no different than if you were a vegetarian or a fanatic member of PETA, you wouldn't work in a steakhouse, because you don't believe in their business practices.  That being said, I have no problem with certain places being non smoking such as school grounds, public venues where the non smokers and smokers congregate without the options.  Again common sense.

FEEL GOOD STORY:  Well let me rephrase.  This was a story that was horrible but ended up with a happy ending.  Those local to Saint Louis are familiar but if you live elsewhere you may not be.  4 years ago a young boy was abducted while on a bike ride not far from his home.  After a region wide search for him turned up no leads the case was, like so many others left open but became dormant.  At the beginning of 2007, another boy was abducted and went missing.  4 days passed and a young man happened to see a vehicle that he thought matched the decription of one authorities were looking for in connection with the 2nd disappearance.  The authorities swooped in and by some miracle found not only the 2nd boy but also the one who went missing 4 years earlier.  They arrested/convicted the man responsible and the boys are back with ther families try to ragian what they lost.  The monster responsible was convicted to several life sentences and a sentence or something like 179 years.  He will never taste freedom again.

Ok this has become too serious.  Lets take a look at sports:

BASEBALL:  My defending champion Cardinals blew this year and so did their manager (a .12 blood alcohol).

Steriod scandal rock the baseball world.  Who could believe it?  Pro ballplayers using steriods.  I though they got those tree trunk size necks from good eating, amino acids, and one a day vitamins.  All those involved with baseball have had there heads stuck in the sand long enough and they are all to blame.  Bring back the pure sport that I love.

Barry Bonds breaks Hank Aaron's record.  Bonds can't hold Aaron's jock.

FOOTBALL:  First of all the most important piece of football news.  Michael, my youngest son, played his Freshman year of football.  His team finished with an 8-1 record (8 wins in a row to end the season).  He wsa starting Middle Linebacker.  Great Job and I look forward to another great year in 2008.  All the players on his team are a great bunch of guys.  Since I coached them in 8th grade, I think they should credit me with all of their success. (just kidding)

Patriots are perfect.  16-0 and counting.  I thought I would never see a team in the NFL go undefeated.  They are quite simply the mostdominating team I ahve ever witnessed.  Great players, coaches, and videographers.

O. J. Simpson:  In his wuest to findthe real killer, he got caught up in an armed robbery.  Man he has some bad luck.

MUSIC: There has been some good, some bad, and some ok.

PERSONAL STUFF:

Fantasy Football:  OK yes I am a fantasy football geek so deal with it.  It's fun.  I had a decent year in one league, finished fifth overall and the champion of the runner up flight.  That is after drafting in the number 12 spot.  In my other league I completely blew.  Well to be honest everyone except My sister in law and nephew's team blew.  they smoked all of us that supposedly know something about the game.  Congratulations AWFL.  ps Aaron, I ahve figured out why you keep finishing in second place.  You are the second son of the second son.  You are destined to be second, son.

FAMILY:  You realize you getting older when you ahve two boys and they one day woke up and were young men.  They are both in high school now and they, sadly are both taller than me.  Of course I am very proud of them and they are my hero's

That is all for now.  Take care everyone and have a Great New Year.
