Loner cart helps boxer get around PRP

When Parker was first picked up by Hopkins County animal-control officials about a year ago, there wasn't much fuss made over the slight limp that the 4-year-old boxer had in one of his back legs.

But the limp has since developed into partial paralysis and has prompted a cross-country act of kindness to help keep Parker on the move.

Parker, now diagnosed with canine degenerative myelopathy, is tooling around outside the Pleasure Ridge Park neighborhood home of his foster mom, Kelly Hamilton, thank s to a specialized wheelchair cart loaned to him by the Boxer Orange County Animal Rescue in Huntington Beach, Calif.

His condition, a neurological disease, develops when myelin, the insulating sheath around transmitter cells in the spinal column, begins breaking down.

That loss cuts off communication between dog's brain and lower-body nerves, eventually rendering the dog's back legs useless.

Hamilton, who also serves as Louisville director of the BlueGrass Boxer Rescue group, said that as soon as Parker arrived in Louisville and they realized his need, members began raising money to pay for the $700 cart.

"We didn't think anyone would donate," Hamilton said.

But they had raised $350 when fellow boxer lover and Shively resident Tonyia Lopez adopted her boxer, Blake, through the local group last month and learned of Parker's plight.

Within days, Lopez had posted the dog's needs on her Web site, BoxerTalk.org , which features a message board to assist rescue groups across the country that need help with information, fundraising and resources.

Brenda Kinnee, founder of the year-old Orange County group, said she knew as soon as she read the posting about Parker that she might be able to help. A donated cart that had been loaned out to another special-needs dog was then sitting unused.

By Oct. 3, the cart was on its way to Parker.

"As long as he needs it, if he lives five years more, he's welcome to it until he passes on," Kinnee said of Parker. "It's the kind of thing we're hoping to start to do with more groups."

Lopez said she was moved but not surprised by the act of generosity.

"Several years ago, people would have put dogs like this down, but now they're finding ways to help them," she said.

"It never ceases to amaze me what people do. These rescues are dedicated to these animals. It brought me to tears," Lopez added.

Dr. Jean Swigert, owner of Derby City Animal Hospital in the Camp Taylor area, fitted the cart to Parker. She said the sweet-natured dog, which she has treated for several months, took well to the equipment.

"He took off in it as if he'd been in it all his life, just started walking and took off as if he knew what he was doing," Swigert said. "We were pretty happy."

With disorders like Parker's, the biggest danger comes from pressure sores and ulcers that become infected through lack of movement, Swigert said.

But getting the cart, which helps keep Parker active, might prolong his life, she said.

Hamilton said Parker is available for adoption to a local family and would be a great addition to the right home.

"He's never given up and would rather do something on his own before you try to help," she said. "He's a very, happy, loving dog.

"He's a good boy."

Honey,
You came into our lives on BoxerTalk almost 3 yrs ago and you touched us all with your adorable pictures and the things your mommy told us about you. Each and every one of us felt as if we knew you personally and some of us did. You put your paw prints on our hearts and we are forever grateful to you for that.

Thank you for being who you were, for the laughs and for the love you gave your mommy and daddy. You were very special to them and you will be deeply missed by us all!

You were a special girl and your mommy and daddy will forever hold you in their hearts. Rest peacefully baby girl, we know you are still here in spirit and that every time the wind blows, the sun shines or a flower blooms it's a little bit of you saying "I'm ok and I'm waiting for you"

A donation to Boxer Orange County Animal Rescue has been made in Honeys name to help other Boxers learn how wonderful life can be.

Parker  is a beautiful flashy brindle boy of 6-7 years old in Rescue in Louisville, Ky.

Parker has DM (Degenerative Myopathy). Both of his back legs and hips have degenerated to a point that he is in need of a dog cart to be mobile. Dog carts are very expensive and he will have to be measured and the cart made just for him.

Thanks to posting this on BoxerTalk, Parker's cart was donated and will be sent via FedEx and is set to arrive this Saturday!

Thank you members of BoxerTalk for yet again amazing me and helping another Boxer in need!! And thank you Brenda from Boxer Orange County Animal Rescue for being so awesome!!
