A little report on the happenings inside Camp AGB:
The recording of our demo EP is going to start some time in February. The planned tracklist is:
1. Across The Bridge/War on the Tides 2. Bannockburn 3. In the Grove of The Dryads
We're also going to re-record Dupplin Moor which'll be available as a free download once it's been mastered. T-shirts will hopefully be available around the time of the demo release to purchase too.
The completion of the demo will signal the beginning of our slight style change sonically. Three new songs have been completed that follow this vein, one of which has been titled "Standing on The Graves of Giants", and more will follow before our next demo. We are hoping to move our lyrics beyond our most used theme of historic battles and into greater depths of the mythology and history of Scotland and the Celtic areas with this new direction as well.
Should all go according to plan, we shall have our EP ready by April, and a release date and gig shall be announced closer to the time.
That should do for now methinks...
Jaime/AGB

There Is a Sound Made by Boiling Blood Enslaved at the Ivory Blacks in Glasgow, Scotland, on November 11, with support from Alba Gu Brath, Audrey Horne and Krakow by: Colleen Burton
The metal legends of Enslaved paid a visit to Scotland's largest city on November 11, playing a set focusing upon their latest release _Vertebrae_ in the intimate venue of the Ivory Blacks, Glasgow. They were initially booked alongside folklorish Taiwanese black metal act Cthonic and German black metal group Secrets of the Moon, neither of whom were able to appear. Not to completely knock their efforts, but the replacement bands Krakow and Audrey Horne could not have been more misplaced.I had no idea what to make of Audrey Horne's sound until I looked them up and found them commonly referred to as "post-grunge", or hard, melodic rock. This was particularly baffling as Ice Dale is apparently half of the guitars for this act. I've nothing against him shaking up the black metal routine, but this is a very unusual sound to emerge from the depths of Norway. The musicianship was solid, but the vocals were of this rather annoying hardcore caliber, so be warned against that if you don't enjoy the "core" stylings. On the other hand, the show's first opener (which probably should have gone directly before Enslaved, being the only other metal act present) was fantastic. Alba Gu Brath, or "Scotland Forever", is all about the battle metal. They're young, but their vocalist is on his game and the members are already working well with keyboards and other elements to flavor their folk tendencies. Their band name also apparently refers to the five members of the Alba clan, "The Blue Men of the Minch", for those who enjoy a nerdy dose of historical metal. "Dryads" and "Bannockburn" were notably memorable choices from the Alba Gu Brath performance. The Enslaved set was pretty much a showcasing of _Vertebrae_, so thankfully, it's quite a good album. Songs outside of it were just classics and crowd-pleasers, as they only had about an hour to play around with. "Clouds" was the well-chosen opener, driving the crowd in into a head banging frenzy of strident guitars offsetting diverse vocals, cascading into an eerie finale. This initial energy was captured and encapsulated in "Fusion of Sense and Earth", a repetitive and almost droning track set to odd visuals in the background, which made a surprisingly good addition to a setlist that predictably featured several of the self-titled tracks from major albums. The recent _Ruun_ saw a good bit of playtime, although Enslaved tried to stagger their setlist so the _Vertebrae_ songs were spread out. Picking up the pace again with the new album, "New Dawn" brought fists into the air before fading into soft chants of the chorus and Grutle Kjellson's death growls. "Ruun" was played just in time to satisfy the collective appetite for a classic, in particular allowing the vocals and percussion to burst through more than is typical for their style. "As Fire Swept Clean the Earth" from the epic _Below the Lights_ was received with great excitement, unfortunately being the only track from this album to get some live time. The persistent use of harsh vocals with excellent riffing kept the crowd focused, though perhaps this song wasn't quite up to studio quality. We were all ready and willing for the transition forward in time as "Ground" and "To the Coast" were played, and the former particularly seemed to lighten the atmosphere; the chorus laden with melodious sections and catchy little riffs, and a wandering sort of metal jam that broke up for Enslaved's characteristically beautiful interweaving of death vocals with a clean backing sound. "To the Coast" brought a more legendary sound to these Vikings, a depressing quality to the music that was used to segue into "Eld": old-school, frantic, and much more violent than what the listeners had been experiencing that evening. "Allfadr Odin", from their earliest demo, was the surprise song, and perhaps the only mosh-able offering, as the members of Enslaved assuredly changed this direction after the _Yggdrasil_ days. "The Watcher" was chosen as the closer to wind things down, which it did perhaps too effectively. Thankfully, Enslaved only departed from the stage long enough to hear a few cries for an encore before returning to perform "Isa", which was fabulous, with every person in the room screeching the chorus back at the band. Apart from some overly obnoxious people and drunken fist-fights (at an Enslaved show, of all places), their set was incredibly satisfying and their playlist clung tenaciously to my memory. They generally seemed to make a good executive decision in avoiding popular yet down tempo, ambient offerings from _Monumension_, for example. Enslaved fans, be sure to check out the new material before you go see the group live on their European tour, which ends on December 20. You won't regret the time you spend on _Vertebrae_, though. Alba Gu Brath are certainly up-and-comers to keep an eye on, and if you can struggle through the rest of the openers, Enslaved will deliver a show worthy of their long and critically acclaimed legacy. Iron Age Records is a presumably rather recently-formed UK collective promoting folk, pagan and Viking metal. Although thin on the ground in terms of professional biography, they reassuringly state that they are run "by musicians for musicians", and they are the culprits behind this nicely-packaged compilation which spans their chosen genres in terms of style and geography.
There are some real treats on "Iron Age Volume 1" for the intrepid seeker of folk and Viking sounds. Highlights for me included Oakenshield's "Utgarda Loki" which mixes a haunting, indelible lead with very grim riffwork, a satisfyingly evil vocal performance and a fine sense of narrative. Wolves of Hate's contribution is simple but effective nasty blackened Viking metal; there's something irresistible about the lyric "How I adore/the spoils of war". Alba Gu Brath's "Dupplin Moor" had a personal attraction, given that I grew up very close to that Scottish battle site, and the band do not fail to convey the spirit and aggression of the Wars for Independence, with their heavy savagery and sense of atmosphere. Wulfgar are winners with their epic, rousing riffs and dramatic melodies, as are Natan with their genuine folk feel and a very mature song-writing ability. Similar in style to Natan, Alkonost have attracted praise on this site before; although this brand of soaring female vocals doesn't float my boat, the two tracks on offer here cannot fail to win more fans with their beautiful pagan melodies. Northern Oak 'bring the folk' most successfully, with their excellent, intriguing "Madness of the Feral Moon".
Of course, there are some complete howlers too. Generalising horrible, how good do you think Japanese Viking metal would be? Listen to No Remorse, No Regret for an answer, or if you can't wait I'll enlighten you: it's fucking terrible. I see no reason why people from all over the world can't plug into the Viking vibe, but compare this with "The Sword" by Shieldwall; an amazing track, steeped in heritage, possessed of a genuine spirit and depth. Sincerity and creativity are what's required to make successful folk/pagan/Viking metal, not throwaway, rootless references to 'Valhalla' or 'Thor'. Ragnaroek are pretty dire as well, with their dinky sword clashes and camped-up heavy metal stomp. Black Tartan Clan make a horrible Dropkick Murphys racket, and have a vocalist called 'Mac Loud'; I think that's all you need to know.
Still, even the duff notes have comedic value, and more importantly, they are outweighed by the classy, interesting offerings from the top quality underground acts that have gathered under this banner (including those I haven't had space to mention, all of whom are worth your time, and I hope can be featured in depth on this site soon). If you're looking for folk/pagan/Viking metal distanced from the predictability of that pushed by the larger labels, this is the first stone you should overturn. - Archaic-Magazine.com
I should have started my review series of Iron age records with this record, but I chose to review NATAN first. This one is the next-in-line and also one of the best releases I got from this label. It represents what Iron age records stands for: Viking/folk/pagan and above all black metal. The interesting part about this cd is the fact that Volume 1 shows that Iron age doesn't colour between the lines. BLACK TARTAN CLAN plays a song that reminds me of Ring of fire performed by SOCIAL DISTORTION (for rock/punk fans amongst us). RAGNAROEK just isn't my cup of tea (what the hell is this band doing on this compilation cd anyways) and NO REMORSE NO RETREAT plays Viking hardrock.
Iron age records acquaints us with some very promising new bands i.e. WULFGAR, ALKONOST and the inevitable NATAN. ALBA GU BRATH and OAKENSHIELD deserve an honourable mention for bringing us a solid mix of melodic and aggressive song writing.
The fact that NATAN, NEMEAN, VINTERNATT and BLACK TARTAN CLAN can stand their man between this English (well, mostly English that is) violence is another reason why I'm proud to be a Belgian.
This compilation is a success and I hope that Iron age records will reach their goal of promoting some of their finest bands. I for one will keep a close eye to this label (although I know which bands I'm not going to follow on this label). - FYU Review

Hail Brothers
Just to give ye a wee update from us to you without all the adverts etc etc Well we've been back in writing/practicing after a short summer break and things are looking up, we have unfortunately had to drop one of our songs that we've play at our previous sets...because we fucked it up...ALOT! but fear not...we have already replaced it with the first song we actually ever wrote...it has been all revamped and put in to our set for our upcoming gigs so you must come to witness their greatness. As I mentioned before we're like CONSTANTLY writing new material now so we'll hopefully have a good few changes to our up coming sets.
In other news we are going to be recording our demo in November, I know it's so far far away, so we will be releasing it hopefully by the start of next year, this is really down to us being perfectionists, so please be patient with us as we get alot of messages and comments from people saying like "hope to hear more from you soon" well so do we tbh I mean we have our songs fully written we're just waiting patiently to see how much we can write and put our best foot forward when it comes to properly releasing the demo!
I know I said no adverts but to end this we REALLY hope that you can all come and see us at our up and coming gigs, we could use the support as we're playing with some fantastic bands that would just be a total shame to miss! Including our good friends Burning Earth and Ravenage...not at the same gig but they are bands we're lucky to share the stage with!
anyway, speak to you all later Cheers and many many beers Disko Alba gu Bráth
