So after navigating the streets of lower Manhattan trying to avoid the gridlock caused by some protest blocking our way to Franklin Street, The Howlin' Thurstons made it to the 4th floor recording studio of Mark Dann. With fearless producer, JP Bowersock's ears equally tuned as our instruments, and Rich's highly skilled hands manning Pro Tools, we got six songs tracked. With some help from the kick ass Vietnamese food, we got much accomplished and are very pleased with the early results. Peter has some over dubs yet to record, and then JP and Mark will have at it. We hope to have the final product ready for public consumption in the weeks to come. Stay tuned!

Catch a dark but audible video of The Howlin' Thurstons playing our own interpretation of Link Wray's "Guitar Cha Cha" from our show in April 2007 at Lakeside Lounge in the beautiful East Village NYC.

Play along with the filmer and count the number of yellow cabs passing in front of the large Lakeside Window.

A long, long time ago, in a land far, far away, a radio monument was erected to our arrested adolescence. That erection, known as "The Teenage Wasteland," hosted by Bill Kelly, has been a toxic waste dump to all of those among us who despise rrreal rock and roll since its demon spawn back on that hoary day, August 15th, 1978, over the formerly pristine airwaves of WFMU.

Bill Kelly, known as THE original garage rock DJ in America, the Guru of Garage, the Sultan of Surf, the Potentate of Power Pop, the Mountebank of Manhattan, the Black Hole of Rock and Roll, remains a force to be reckoned with continuing to host his "Teenage Wasteland" radio show every Sunday afternoon on WFMU broadcasting on 91.1 FM in the New York City area, 90.1 fm in the Hudson Valley, and live on the web at www.wfmu.org as well as "Black Hole Bandstand" Saturdays at 8PM ET and Sundays 8AM on Sirius Satellite Radio channel 25 - Little Steven's Underground Garage.

Thw Howlin' Thurstons wish to publicly thank Bill for his support by bringing our contemporary brand of vintage instrumental savagery to the masses by graciously opening his "Teenage Wasteland" show on June 24 with "Dick Marmalade Private Eye".

The Howlin' Thurstons - Road Rage dotdotdotdot

Four new tracks from the ever inventive Howlin' Thurstons. Always interesting.

Picks: Dick Marmalade Private Eye, Lining Up For Latte, Road Rage, Quintus Diriculous

Dick Marmalade Private Eye () starstarstarstar
Surf Instrumental (Stereo)
Big fuzz and drama give "Dick Marmalade Private Eye" a solid and formidable sound. The rhythm borders on Hawkwind, well maybe only suggests it, but that adds a heaviness to this. The rhythm contrasts to the melody for an engaging arrangement. Great drums.

Lining Up For Latte () starstarstar
Rock Instrumental (Stereo)
"Lining Up For Latte" is a rock instro with a strong structure and road worthy sound. This very modern rocker is very cool. In some ways, it's a regular rock instro, but there's more here than just that.

Road Rage () starstarstar
Rock Instrumental (Stereo)
"Road Rage" is a heavy and durable track with a strong rock sound. The beak is very cool.

Quintus Diriculous () starstarstar
Rock Instrumental (Stereo)
The melody riff here circulates and drives, and the big distortion adds drama to an already large track. Again, the drums are very good.

Missed us?!?!?

Well we're back and better than ever! First bit of news... We would like to welcome Tom Avitabile with open arms to the pack of wolves that is the Howlin' Thurstons. Tom's drumming cuts through the tracks with the force and accuracy of a deadly assassin. Consider yourself warned.

Secondly, We are proud to unveil "Road Rage and Other Acts of Unprovoked Violence" our latest four song EP of all entirely original instrumental madness. Tracks include: "Dick Marmalade Private Eye", "Lining Up For Latte", "Road Rage", and "Quitus Diriculous".

Check 'em out and tell us what you think. Also, look for us destroying the stages of NYC's East Village in the near future.

Just before The Thurston's holiday break, we were back in the studio with J.P. Bowersock at the helm laying down three new tracks for the highly anticipated Thurstons CD. The CD is nearly complete and we will definitely have it completed sometime this year. As of right now 9 Thurston originals are recorded and mixed. We plan to get back in the studio one more time to record three more tunes, then it's off to final mixing.

Loud Underground's Review
"This four piece instrumental band from the Big Apple knows how to create big sound. Their four song demo includes both totally original, upbeat songs (Out of Limits my first choice) along with twisting familiar melodies into a unique blend of their own (Song #4, Diamond Head, taking parts of "Smoke on the Water" and "Sunshine of Your Love").

This is the type of music you play to get your heart pumping, to catch a break from the rigors of life. Musically this band has it together. The recording is tight, with a sound scoping the realms of surf, garage and punk. If you like instrumental bands and want something fresh, then check out The Howlin' Thurstons."

Rockin` their way through the Club scene of New York since 1999, is this 4 piece Garage/Surf Punk outfit, The Howlin` Thurstons , totally intent in bringing their form of Rock n` Roll into the 21st century!

This CD is their first demo and it's an intense guitar & Garage surf for the next 15 minutes or more, echoes of Link Wray , The Cramps , The Sonics even a tint of MC5 , shine through these stompers from start to finish.

First up on the player is the energetic guitar Garage trash a go go 60`s vibed instro, " Knucklewalk ", wow! top introduction to the Howlin` Thurstons !, following up is the garaged up surf instro, " Out Of Limits ", Sci-Fi cum Spy Movie intro?, next up it's a cool cover of Link Wray's , " Guitar Cha Cha ", full of bump n` grind and plenty of reverb! last but not least its, " Diamond Head ", another surf rock instrumental, foot tappin, head noddin` aplenty! A cheeky little number and one of those spot the riff tunes! Great end to the proceedings.

4 tracks jam packed full of raw garage power and ready to be unleashed to the world! Get on their website give them a call, they'll soon know the world is listening! and boy are we listening!!!!

D our bass player was attacked by a rabid piano, two weeks ago. He was save by his son who took a chainsaw to the ugly monster with the 88 teeth killing it dead, but not before it severely tore a nasty laceration in Kevin’s foot and fractured several bones.  Poor old Kevin will be layed up for 8 to 12 weeks recuperating.  Pity.  We’ve had to cancel our 8/25 gig at the Lakeside Lounge, and we’re busy scrambling to find a temp replacement for the Sept 17th gig,.

So far the plan is to do half our usual set and half some Garage/Rockabilly shit. We kidnap two players from A’s side project, The Fops.  Should prove to be an interesting night.
