i was recently online (go figure...) checking some of my other accounts when i came accross someone who seemed to genuinely want to compare black sabbath and ac/dc. usually these discussions are fodder for teenie boppers and i saw many of the replies were either not serious or were focused on opinion rather than facts. my interpretation of the asker's question was that she was asking for an answer based on fact. so i said what the hell and did a little research based on a gut feeling, which turned out to be right. here is my answer: May 31, 6:15 AM have you ever heard the expression "that's like comparing apples and oranges?" here is a prime example of that expression: comparing black sabbath and ac/dc is like comparing apples and oranges.
both are great, but both are distinctly different. furthermore it isn't really a fair comparison to match them as black sabbath got their start much earlier (5 years) than ac/dc did.
if you were to match them up by albums, then black sabbath would win hands down at 18 albums where as ac/dc only has 14 (and planning one more release later this year). however it isn't just a matter of 4 more albums; black sabbath hasn't released any new studio work since 1995 and they have practically released one album per year since they started. their popularity thrives on a fan base dedicated to their past work and their tours. ac/dc, on the other hand, last released work in 2000 and their last 3 albums have been separated by 5 year increments (that's 3 albums in 15 years- too few for most fans). while both groups have had issues with band member activity, ac/dc clearly put less focus on releasing new music.
as a dj, producer, and avid music consumer, i recognize the importance in regular and frequent album releases by bands. it's one of the essential ways to keep an audience hooked and longing for more. it's also a way to avoid becoming another one hit wonder. with the frequency of which one's tastes change, it's important to keep their attention with new music and touring. black sabbath accomplishes that hands down, more so than ac/dc.
even though both groups have critical claims to success, commercial acknowledgment of their work, tracks covered by other groups, not to mention remixes, black sabbath would still lead by a noticeable margin. you could also compare by album/concert sales, the success of solo careers, and their subsequent albums and tours as well. there's a lot to research, but i think you would see that in the end, black sabbath would be the heavy weight champ.

I have been putting off any posts til I had something more concrete to post, but there is only one thing I can offer in case anyone has been wondering: my external hard drive has died. Because of this hardware failure, I have been unable to mix, produce, or host weekly broadcasts as I normally would. Because my external hard drive is 2tb (read 2000gb), the cheapest repair quote I can possibly get is $6,000.00. I will also have to replace the unit that died and buy and additional back up unit so this doesn't happen again. Needless to say, I don't have this kind of money to spend all at once. It will take me time to save up for this repair. If I am lucky, maybe I can afford the repair in a year, but I anticipate it taking about ten years instead. Either way, it will be quite some time before release any new work or mixes. I am currently working on a way to get broadcasts done using different equipment and a different medium. If anyone knows of a cheaper way to get my repair done, I would appreciate some feedback. If anyone would like to help out financially I could set up a donations link via Paypal, however I would rather be hired to spin or have my albums be bought online. I would be thrilled to get my life back on track again. I'm sorry this has happened. Thank you for your support. plur...
*********************************
That was a post I made early in April, over a month after my drive had failed. By that point, I already felt obliged to say something in regards as to why I had ceased to broadcast on a weekly basis, why I was not creating new mixes and remixes, why I was not releasing new albums, and why my work had not been distributed to more online stores for sale as I had promised. I didn't have a lot of information to offer as most of the people I had been in contact with had given me very little information to go on. I like to know as much as I can and compare services before I settle on one. After all, $6000 is a lot of money to cough up and I am not about to give it to the first person I find. I need to know if I can find cheaper, the processes involved, if it's possible for me to cut costs based on options and preferences... I want to feel comfortable and confident knowing the services to be performed will be successfully done by a reliable source. Because of the paths my life has taken, I do not have $6000 to surrender in one fell swoop. In order to pay such a price all at once, I will need to make and save that money. Unfortunately, the drive died before I could get my music distributed to more online sources. I have only a couple places selling my work now, but they are in obscure locations which do not receive as much internet traffic as where they were going to be located. Most of the work available for sale was available for free for nearly a year so it has not been selling since its availability status changed. I trust at some point the music will start selling. When it was free, it had been down loaded over 15,000 times in less than a year. So I trust it will sell again upon finding a larger audience. Not only do I not have $6000 to afford to repair my hard drive, my original intent was to make money from my music to afford car repairs so I could have transportation for a job. Most jobs require many things, such as a degree, experience, and reliable transportation. Having tried to work without reliable transportation previously, I know it isn't a viable option when public transportation causes frequent lateness thus threatening job security. I also lack a degree despite my years of college training. Additionally, my work history is patchy, having had to take time off to help my handicapped grandparents and even live with them for a few years. My options are reduced to nothing more than minimum wage jobs or possibly an entry level company position- still requiring reliable transportation at the very least. So i can't get a job without transportation and I can't afford to repair my transportation without a job! Vicious, isn't it? So that brought me to mixing making music and selling it. I figured I would work at home on something I love which I am also capable of doing and make at least enough to afford repairs. I also had dreams of taking my goals to higher levels. I had not planned on hard drive failure thwarting my momentum. I had no backup plan to fall back on. So suddenly I find myself in the ugly position of wondering what I am going to do. I figure music sales and dj gigs might allow my to make enough money to afford various repairs, but it will take anywhere up to ten years or longer, depending on the strength of the income. I'm not sure I can happily sit around and wait for that kind of money to roll in bit by bit. I like to be productive. I like to feel useful. I tend to measure and assess my progress regularly, so I'm fairly confident I wouldn't like to sit around and wait to have enough money. So what can I do to expedite things? I have looked into this before; in fact, every time I consider a new job I go through the same train of thought. Most work at home options do not appeal to me. Either I have to put some money into a kit or a phony certification process which turns out to be a scam or the work is for data entry/processing or for collections services. Years ago I was on the other end of the collections services and I can tell you I hate being felt like despicable prey. I would never do that to another person. One might say I should take any job to make money just because it pays. I have never been able to accomplish anything I couldn't put my heart into. I have done data entry/processing and I won't do it again. I have a lousy attention span and when it comes to things I have no interest in, I might as well not be doing it. I also have other limitations. I had back surgery twice. My physical endurance and general comfort level just aren't very good anymore. I find it difficult to sit, stand, lift, kneel and more. I also have developed a sensitivity to light after a scratched cornea; I can assure you migraines don't go as easily as your average headache. So what the hell can I do??? Well, endurance can be built, but sometimes it takes years to do. It has been three years since my last back surgery. I can do more things now, but I still spend the majority of my time in my bed. I has also been about as long since I scratched my cornea. some days are worse than others, but I can usually manage to be outside in bright sunlight for about an hour before my eyes are exhausted and I start to feel a migraine coming on, both of which are painful experiences. I can withstand normal indoor lighting for even longer, but it's something I generally try to avoid; I even keep my bedroom dimly lit. I figure at the very least I can try to complete a degree or two online while I am still stuck at home. Perhaps I can get into another field that interests me which would afford my repairs. Perhaps there is other work at home, or maybe temporary work (perhaps even abroad) that I can do which will allow me to afford repairs or even more. I have always felt challenged for extra money in the past. Perhaps this is an opportunity to make to make my life even better. To be honest, I have recently been looking into teaching again. The idea of teaching English as a second/foreign language appeals to me. The idea of living abroad also has some appeal and maybe one I might make it a permanent situation, but right now it's merely a consideration as I review my possibilities for completing a degree at home. I hope this offers some clarity as to whats going on with things in my life right now. When I have more concrete information to offer I will keep you posted. Thank you for your support. plur...

Today marks the end of one path and the start of a new path. I have parted ways with Amduscias Records in search of greener pastures and broader horizons. This means my music will no longer be available for free download at The Internet Archive. During this time, I will be keeping my Soundclick store current. You will be able to purchase my work there as usual.
I may also be reviving a record label I started a few years ago, Groove Rhythm. I have several options and I will keep everyone posted with my progress as usual. Thank you all for your continued support. PS - While aspects of my production takes a new shape, I still broadcast weekly on lowercasesounds.com. Continue to count on great sounds from djsquelch & Phase Shifts!

i think this is great and i wish the usa would follow in the footsteps of the eu. i think the important thing to keep in mind is that the people who are trying to punish the file sharers are not the original artists, nor do the original artists benefit from this legall activity. it is scapegoating on a slippery slope, pure and simple. source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080129/tc_nm/spain_court_eu_dc_2&printer=1;_ylt=Au6sISVNvb6IkF3L6TEqbnRU.3QA EU court says file sharers don't have to be named .. END HEADLINE --> .. BEGIN STORY BODY --> European Union countries can refuse to disclose names of file sharers on the Internet in civil cases, the EU's top court said on Tuesday in a blow to copyright holders trying to fight digital piracy. The European Court of Justice ruled on a dispute between Spanish music rights holders association Promusicae and Spain's top telecoms operator Telefonica (TEF.MC). Telefonica argued that, under a national law based on EU rules, it only had to disclose the name of an Internet subscriber for criminal actions, not civil ones. "Community law does not require the member states, in order to ensure the effective protection of copyright, to lay down an obligation to disclose personal data in the context of civil proceedings," the court said in a statement. Promusicae wanted names of Telefonica Internet clients who shared copyright material on the Web using the KaZaA file exchange software, so it could start civil proceedings against them. Civil proceedings are cheaper than criminal proceedings which typically require a higher burden of proof. "There are several community directives whose purpose is that the member states should ensure, especially in the information society, effective protection of industrial property, in particular copyright," the court said. "Such protection cannot, however, affect the requirements of the protection of personal data. The directives on the protection of personal data also allow the member states to provide for exceptions to the obligation to guarantee the confidentiality of traffic data," the court added. EU rules do not preclude the possibility for EU countries of laying down an obligation to disclose personal data in the context of civil proceedings, it said. "However, it does not compel the member states to lay down such an obligation," the court said.

Hey there, I just wanted to let you know I have released a new album through Amduscias Records. It's called Recycled Sound. I hope you all will enjoy it. The common flavor throughout this album is ambient. This work fuses the elements of multiple genres together in a variety of combinations. You will hear layers of ambient, spoken word, and avant-garde combined in various ways. I like to fuse elements of various genres together to make new conceptual sounds that you may find thought provoking, not unlike scoring you might hear accompanying a movie or other visual presentations. The theme of this album is historical speeches and sound bites set to musical patterns which are interpretations of the mood evoked from the various speeches. As usual, I have provided front and back cover art in case you wish to burn a cd so you can have the complete album as it was intended. Thank you for your continued support. You can download my new album for free here: http://www.archive.org/details/AMR103 Here is a list of my work (in no particular order) on the Internet Archive. It lists all my albums and allows you to download them for free! Hey there, I just wanted to let you know I have released a new album through Amduscias Records. It's called Ghosts from the Past. I hope you all will enjoy it. The common flavor throughout this album is acid. This work fuses the elements of multiple genres together in a variety of combinations. You will hear layers of acid, techno, industrial, and a hint of noise combined in various ways. I like to fuse elements of various genres together to make new conceptual sounds that you may find thought provoking, not unlike scoring you might hear accompanying a movie or other visual presentations. You will notice a co-authorship on this album. This work represents a collaborative effort with Turmoil, the owner of Amduscias Records. Hey there, I just wanted to let you know that a new album has just been released through Amduscias Records. It's called Chernobyl. I hope you all will enjoy it. The common flavor throughout this album is ambient, plus a couple surprises. This work fuses many elements together in a variety of combinations. You will hear layers of ambient, avant-garde, industrial, and noise combined in various ways. A lot of it will drone and be very dark. I felt the subject begged to remind the listener just how disturbing the incident was. In other words, I fuse elements of various genres together to make new conceptual sounds that you may find thought provoking, not unlike scoring you might hear accompanying a movie or other visual presentation. Also, you will notice this album's theme- the nuclear disaster that occurred over 20 years ago in Chernobyl. It is a serious situation that continues to exist; a situation that affected animals, plants, and people of all ages; a situation that still needs to be covered up, literally. All the flawed theories, accusations, and blame in the world won't fix it, nor will a cover- a cover, which caused me to do a lot of reading, picture viewing, and research- a story which should never be forgotten, not by anyone. They say history repeats itself. All of mankind would be fools to let this happen again. As dark as these tracks may be, as dark as the feelings within the words, none of it is as dark as what happened. Remember that… As usual, I have provided front and back cover art in case you wish to burn a cd so you can have the complete album as it was intended. Thank you for your continued support. You can download my new album for free here: http://www.archive.org/details/AMR069 Here is my page at Amduscias Records. It lists all my albums and provides a way to download them for free! You can find it all conveniently listed here: http://www.archive.org/details/amduscias If you would like to purchase my albums, you may do so here: http://www.soundclick.com/Store/byArtist.cfm?bandID=600809 I'm working on another album now so I will keep you all updated… So, who wants some free music? =) plur… P.S. I have not yet decided whether to sell this album. I do not want to exploit a disaster, but rather bring about awareness. If I do sell this album, the proceeds will go to a charity. Hey there, I just wanted to let you know that a new album has just been released through Amduscias Records. It's called Sentiments. I hope you all will enjoy it. The common flavors throughout this album are ambient and downtempo, however I have provided you with a couple surprises. This work fuses many elements together in a variety of combinations. You will hear layers of ambient, downtempo, trance, house, idm, and acid combined in various ways. In other words, I fuse elements of various genres together to make new conceptual sounds that you may find thought provoking, not unlike scoring you might hear accompanying a movie or other visual presentation. Also, you will notice this album has another theme- emotions associated with memorable moments in life. They are rather ordinary concepts that most people can relate to, and I hope you can relate to them, too, and feel the sentiment expressed in the music. I hope you have as much fun enjoying these soundscapes as I had creating them. As usual, I have provided front and back cover art in case you wish to burn a cd so you can have the complete album as it was intended. Thank you for your continued support.
