The Arizona Republic

Country radio hosts Tim & Willy dished out just the right amount of holiday music and laughs during the 18th edition of their Christmas Breakfast Show at Night.
Getting a big assist from million-selling quartet Little Big Town and St. Louis-based comedian Tim Hawkins, the KMLE-FM radio twosome kept a near-sellout crowd singing, dancing and chuckling during a concert that ran nearly three hours, including intermission.

Tim Hattrick and Willy D. Loon have been generating yuks on Valley radio since 1993, and they worked their deft touch at humor into skits and songs, as well as a show-ending jam session at Phoenix's Celebrity Theatre on Saturday, Dec. 5.

They launched the show with a hilarious video featuring the pair in leotards, dancing to Beyonce's hit "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" and later returned to the screen with a country-flavored song mocking the Valley's light-rail system.

They had Little Big Town singing jingles in a commercial for a fictitious college for morons, "President Obama" onstage wearing his Nobel Peace Prize around his neck as bling and "Tiger Woods" being chased around by five women wielding golf clubs.
Little Big Town delivered a set of hits showing off their gorgeous vocal harmony. Acoustic guitar work by Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet was the main accompaniment as the two joined Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman in singing such hits as "Boondocks," "Bring It On Home" and "Stay."

The foursome, which Tim & Willy have supported since day one, also performed a stirring, bluegrass-flavored take on the seasonal song "Children Go."
Loon showed his musical chops throughout the evening, playing saxophone and guitar and singing a solid solo version of "Welcome Holy Child."

Hawkins spiced things up with his musical humor, including an ode to Chick-fil-A fast-food chicken sung to the tune of the Beatles' "Yesterday" and an old-school country tune that asked, "Do they have a Home Depot in heaven?"

As the show wound down, Hawkins cracked up the crowd with a remark aimed at Little Big Town's Sweet, who has longish blond hair and a beard: "I've always liked Little Big Town," Hawkins said. "I think things really turned around for them when they brought in that guy from ABBA."

Tim & Willy brought things to a close by presenting some heartfelt gifts (not really) to their guests - matching KMLE Snuggie blankets for Little Big Town and a gift set of (Tim) McGraw cologne for Hawkins.

The concert, emceed by Los Angeles comic Josh McDermitt and also featuring Tim & Willy's All Earl Band (the Herndon Brothers Band of Scottsdale), benefited the Tim & Willy Kids FunDation , a charity that contributes to a variety of Arizona causes that help children.

A taped version of the Christmas Breakfast Show at Night will be broadcast on KMLE (107.9 FM) at 6 a.m. Friday, Dec 18; 4 p.m. Dec. 24 and 8 a.m. Dec. 25.

The Nashville Light The Night Walk was held on October 1st and was a tremendous success - 2,500 people walked through the streets of downtown Nashville and raised valuable funds to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Little Big Town and the Real Wives of Country Music were so proud to be a part of this effort.

"Thank you to the fans who poured in so much support for these women.  I'm especially proud of my wife, Rebecca, and the other wives for coming together on their husbands behalf.  They raised $5,925, which is $925 over their initial goal.  Every contribution means so much in finding a cure for this disease.  Your generosity is an inspiration to us.  Thanks again, looking forward to an even bigger next year!  Peace & Love, Phillip"

In an article from CMT News, Karen speaks up about her recent pairing with John Mellencamp:

John Mellencamp Explains His Influence (or Not) on Country Music

He Prepares for Summer Ballpark Tour With Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson
By Craig Shelburne for CMT News

John Mellencamp
During a recent visit to the CMT offices, John Mellencamp was asked about the treatment for his latest video, "A Ride Back Home."

"Treatment? I don't know what that means," he replied. Luckily his duet partner -- Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town -- steps in.

"Well, he's the video treatment because he always comes up with the concepts, so he just runs with whatever he wants to do. It's not the traditional way of soliciting treatments," she explains, referring to the common practice of asking video production companies to submit ideas.

"Oh, I have never done that," Mellencamp says, softly. "I have made 50 videos. I think I did that one time, and I didn't like that experience. I made a video in 1984 called 'The Authority Song,' and I was on tour and I was very busy, and the record company hired some guy to direct the video. I didn't like that. I've always worked with people that I've known and had relationships with. I've always come up with a way to try to present the song."

Then it dawns on him that "a really smart kid" -- Chris Milk -- directed him in "Walk Tall" in 2004. Fairchild also recalls that Mellencamp directed Bob Dylan's "Political World" video and asks if there was a treatment for it.

"No, I called up Bob, and I said, 'Bob, here's what we're going to do,'" Mellencamp recalled. "And he said, 'OK, just don't make me look stupid.' That's all he said."

Mellencamp can be equally reticent. Asked how it feels to turn on country radio and hear his influence, he says, "You know, I really don't think too much about that. I can turn on my radio and I hear my influences all the time. I think that if somebody makes something and it's out there, it belongs to whoever wants to use it next. ... I think if it's out there and in the air, it belongs to everybody. And everybody can use it. So I don't think it's a matter of even being an influence. I think it's just a matter of -- 'I hear that. I like that. It connected with me. I'm going to try to do the same thing.'"

When Fairchild says Little Big Town is intimidated to cover a Mellencamp song, especially because they have played some shows together, he shrugs it off. "Well, I don't even know what you're talking about."
