Karen and I called each other on the way into town that morning– as we so often do – to talk about the day.  It was a perfectly normal conversation.  I got to the venue a little before she did, and when she walked in, she still had her sunglasses on.  I asked, “Why do you have your sunglasses on?” As if I didn’t know!  Oh, I knew.  Those glasses are a tell tale sign.  It’s the beginning of a migraine!  And when Karen gets a migraine, her life shuts down for about 24 hours.  She gets very sick.  Well, that was not going to work today.  We did not have time for this migraine!  She and I had gotten there early to get all dolled up for the Fan Club party – one of our favorite events of the whole year.  Her pain was getting more and more intense.  Eventually we made her a bed by lining up a bunch of chairs, and she lay there in another world as a lot of commotion ensued around her.  What in the world were we going to do!  We can’t have a Fan Club party without one of the four of us!  We decided that we couldn’t disappoint all the fans, though, who had traveled so far to be here, so we headed out, without Karen, to talk to the press folks who had come.  We tried to explain to them what kind of pain she was in, and they were all very gracious.  At this point, we had no idea if she was going to make the party or not.  But just as we were finishing some interviews, she walked in the room.  It was like she rose from the dead!  What a trooper! We were surprised but so happy to see her.  We then walked into a room full of our sweet, loyal fans who are always a welcomed sight and feed us such great energy.  Karen made it like a champ through the party and then through a 350-person meet and greet.  She’s my hero! The show must go on, right!

I absolutely love playing at the Opry. I know we've heard people talk about it before, but every time we play there, I'm reminded of what a special place it is. You feel it when you walk in the building. We always get there early and hang out backstage waiting for our turn to play. I usually at some point end up wandering the halls. Those halls are lined with amazing pictures of Opry history.... moments in time that are so beautifully captured and preserved for people to enjoy over and over again. That's what you feel in those hallways. There is such a feeling of nostalgia and tradition and you can't help but feel a sense of reverence. That's such a great feeling, and I'm afraid those types of feelings are sometimes overlooked and overran in a fast paced society that is moving so quickly that it's sometimes hard to take the time to stop and let those kinds of emotions wash over you. I love tradition. I think it's so important to pass those types of concepts on to future generations. It means something. It connects you to the past. That's what the Opry  makes me feel. We can't ever lose that. It is the rich heritage of a beautiful style of music that is steeped in tradition, family and the joy and pain of real life. The Opry is country music and I love it.

The night before our Friday performance at LP field, there was a tornado warning for all of Nashville, and the severe storms caused major damage to the lighting rig, and delayed the show for three hours.  By the time we got to the stage for sound check the next afternoon, they were still repairing lights, and were also doing major security checks which caused everyone to run behind schedule.  With that being said, we decided not to let any delays stress us out and just have fun.  We did several interviews and other press prior to the show, which made the time fly by fast.  The next thing I knew we were heading to the stage again for our performance, and you could feel the electricity in the air.  We had fantastic weather for the night, and the 60,000 plus fans were ready for a party.  We stepped out on the stage and the energy from the audience gave us a huge boost, and we had a blast!  Everyone was singing back to us and on their feet, proving why country music fans are the best in the world.   Our set seemed to fly by too and no sooner than we were up there, it was over it seemed.  It took us several hours to come down from the amazing energy we felt from the even more amazing fans, and ended up watching the rest of the show, and loved every minute of it.  We are always grateful for the love you show us, and this night we will remember forever.  Thank you for a remarkable CMA music fest.

Peace,
Phillip

Check out this great article on LBT's performance at LP field on Friday night. Click here to read the whole article!

"...Next to hit the stage was Little Big Town, kicking off their incredible set with Karen Fairchild handling lead vocal duties on their hit 'Fine Line.' Both Karen and Kimberly Schlapman (also a Georgia native) looked stunning; Karen in a sassy little black dress and Kimberly in a flowing, one-sleeved taupe number accented by a striking blue necklace. Next up the ladies, along with LBT's Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet, launched into an energetic version of 'Bones.' They followed with a harmony-drenched cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic, 'The Chain.'

"Here's a song about loving the people in your life while you've got a chance," Jimi told the crowd before Phillip took lead on the poignant 'Vapor' from the group's 'A Place to Land' CD. They closed their set with the rousing 'Boondocks' as the crowd sang along." ...
