AAMM: At what age, were you, when you first got into Metal music?
Ed: Well with no shame regarding my age i'd say 13 years old back in 1976. I believe my older brother walked into my room one day and heard me listening to Elton John. He said, "here you pussy, listen to some real music." It was the UFO album No Heavy Petting. The opening riff on that record changed my life. Of course that led to Sabbath, Priest, etc.
AAMM: Were you yourself, in a band, if so tell us about it?
Ed: I made numerous attempts with bands in the early 80's but things never really worked out. By the time 1987 rolled around I was pretty much managing and promoting metal bands on the east coast.
AAMM: What made you decide to start your own radio metal station, especially geared towards the old school, and thrash metal music?
ED: It was basically something that I always wanted to do. I was a prime example of someone who could not stand the crap on terrestrial (fm) radio. Every now and then a station would have a "metal hour" or "metal shop." I recall so clearly thinking, "What the hell makes these guys think Twisted Sister and Motley Crue are metal! Play some Vio-lence or Gammacide!" When we go back to 1986-1989 thrash was quite popular but radio stations still avoided it. Pissed me off. I vowed that someday i'd generate a thrash program or station. Enter the internet. A miracle filled with amazing technology that I grabbed onto as quick as I could. Seriously though, Thrash Unlimited Radio had to happen. Especially when thrash began to come back around 2002 or so. The station has 2 particular objectives. 1) Locate the best old school style thrash bands from around the world and get them on the air. 2) Honor classic thrash with a strong emphasis on the 80's undergroud thrash movement. As it stands right now TU Radio is the only station on the internet or on FM that airs old school thrash metal 24/7.
AAMM: With all the talented bands you come across, especially on your radio station, (may I add, there is a ton of talent out there), would you ever consider becoming a talent scout? For your own label possiblities or other labels?
Ed: Interesting question. I suppose I consider myself a "talent scout" of sorts already. (for Thrash Unlimited.) I do some independent work for Earache records which is pretty cool and TU is heavily involved with numerous Earache projects. Digby Pearson, (Earache owner), took me under his wing in numerous areas and I have much respect and admiration for his recognition of what TU is about.
AAMM: Do you have future plans, changes, expansions for Thrash Unlimited?
Ed: Numerous moves and expansions are in the works. My partner and TU co-founder J. Greg Waits and I are always looking into new ventures. TU Records is something we are working on. We are looking into the first TU Festival. We are currently working closely with Fueled By Fire managment in the organization and promotion of the "Thrasho De Mayo" festival in Los Angelas. We continue to sponser the current European "Thrashing Like A Maniac" tour. We are busy as hell!
AAMM: On a lighter note/question tell us a bit more about Ed........ Favorite bands growing up, you dont have to list all of them.
Ed: In my early teens it was UFO, Sabbath, Priest, Deep Purple, Kiss, Rush, BOC. I grew with metal as the years went by and progressed with the music as it continued to become harder edged and more technical.
AAMM: Who influenced you in music?
Ed: Without a doubt my parents.
AAMM: What does Ed do for fun, on his own personal time?
Ed: Almost all of personal time is spent with TU. That truly is the best fun I have.
AAMM: Tell us something about yourself, some of us may not know about you?
Ed: I don't drink and I'm a romantic! haha
AAMM: And in closing where do you, in your personal opinion, see Metal music going in the next ten years?
Ed: I hope to god it isn't emo black metal! 10 years is a long time! I'd like for bands to keep it pure and don't get caught up in thinking they must follow a trend in order to be popular.
