The Alrights Son of the Day

Saturday, September 27, 2008
Join Dj Damion On Indie Life Radio Friday, September 26th @ 7 pm EST
As He Interviews City Canyons Artists The Alrights !!!!
CLICK THE INDIE LIFE RADIO BANNER BELOW TO LISTEN !!! Indie Life Radio Pictures, Images and Photos Photobucket The Alrights delve into a lot, musically speaking. Toby Churchill, the group's frontman and singer/songwriter, incorporates various styles, often times, co-mingling genres. Inevitably, the band's "sound" can vary from song to song, sometimes a great deal. One tune may be the band's take on a modern folk sound, while another is driven by distorted guitars and heavy beats. Some tracks are more ambient and ethereal, others, raw and exposed. Amidst this broad amalgamated sound, however, lyrics and melody are often the stand-out feature in any given song. The band formed in the summer of 2003, although its members have known each other and played together for much longer. In the fall of 2005, after extensive gigging, The Alrights signed a record deal with City Canyons Records in New York City. The band has since begun to tour more extensively, are in the process of building a national audience, and has shared the stage with many many fine acts including Retribution Gospel Choir (featuring Al Sparhawk of Low) and Motion City Soundtrack. While critics praised The Alrights debut album HIGH SCHOOL and the CD charted on some college radio stations around the country back in 2006, the boys in the band were smiling to themselves and saying, "You ain't seen nothing yet". The Alrights have come zooming back down with a new EP long on title and even longer on talent. As good as HIGH SCHOOL was, The Alrights have grown by leaps and bounds and achieved a new maturity and musical excellence with "Meeting of the St. Louis County League of Volunteer Astronauts: Excerpts from the Keynote Address". The brilliant new EP marks the group as one of the more potent creative forces in contemporary rock and pop. With their new EP, The Alrights are now about the place creatively that The Beatles were with the release of "Rubber Soul"--talents that have found themselves as a cohesive whole and found the beginning of their true, and very unique, sound. For The Alrights this is a sound perhaps not as diverse, but even more compelling and accomplished than the earlier HIGH SCHOOL. The band features, once again, the tasteful drumming of Chad "Chavo" Amborn, the sweet harmonies and steady bass of Danny Cosgrove and the creative genius of keyboardist, guitarist and lead vocalist Toby Churchill. The marvelous songs are mostly by Churchill including, among others, the powerful "When I Get Born" and the Beatlesque and intellectually playful "Happy Birthday Universe" but Cosgrove holds his own with his contribution the punky, sparky "Love Love Love Love Love".

Hello friends.

As you may have noticed, we have posted release show dates. As of this moment they are in Duluth, Minneapolis, and Sioux Falls. More cities will join the ranks as 2008 goes on. 2008 should be a big year for us across the board as we intend to continue to tour and see that our new material finds it's way onto college airwaves around and about. We also have a couple other surprises in the works for early 2008, we will keep you posted on all new and interesting projects and developments. Meanwhile, we hope to see you out at our shows, and that you enjoy the new album.

Fans of the Alrights, unite!

K bye

I know the steaks aren't done. But I have to look, I have to go over to the grill and lift up the top. Even though I know the steaks aren't done. But the beast wants food. The beast doesn't care about "done" he doesn't want to hear that shit. The beast will be content to eat you if there are no steaks. He may eat you if there is. What about the dinner guests? You try to explain to them about the beast. You say, "well, there might not be steaks for anyone, the beast may want them all." "why did you invite us over here then?" they'll say. "I thought maybe he'd sleep through it, or, I don't know, it's nice to see people... chip?" "No, I think we'll go." they say. You tell them that this might be best, the beast may want the chips too. He may want to eat everyone. It's not so much that he "wants" to as much as he may "need" to. Or maybe that's not true. Regardless, it's the beast. He may eat you, that's just how it is right now.

Hi.

William James describes a man who whenever under the influence of laughing-gas, understood the secrets of the universe. But when he came to, he had forgotten it. At last, with immense effort, he wrote down the secret before the vision had faded. When completely recovered, he rushed to see what he had written. It was: "A smell of petroleum prevails throughout."

Hey there.

For those who are interested, we started recording recently. We're recording with Ben Durrant at Crazy Beast, his studio in MPLS. Ben recently finished up work on Andrew Bird's new album, which, is doing well, to say the least. What does this mean? I don't know, it means Ben is good at what he does, hopefully we are too.

It'll be an EP. Looking at October for a release, the idea being to begin a period of heavy touring shortly there after.

Right now, lets say we'll call the EP...

Meeting of the St. Lious County League of Volunteer Astronauts: Excerpts from the Keynote Address.

How does that sound?

songs on the EP will be...

"When I Get Born"

"All This Time"

"Love Love Love Love Love"

"Happy Birthday Universe"

"All I know is Rock n' Roll"

More news later.

Hello.

Soon, we will be rotating a couple of the songs off our myspace site. Only to be replaced by two other songs from High School. One fine fall day in September-ish, they will all be replaced, I think, by tunes available on our EP, set for release at that time.

Meanwhile, the idea of facing these same songs for another 6 months was just too depressing for words. Not that we'll be mixing it up very much, really. "In A Way" and "The Sickness" will be officially retired from myspace. I know these are two songs that tend to be some peoples favorites, and we are humbled by your affection for them. However, those among the inner-circle will not be too surprised, I think, that we chose to remove these two tunes.

PS. We will still be playing these two songs live.

Love

I told somebody the other day that, I don't compose music anymore, I compose emails.

It's not altogether true, but I'm sure the point is made. We've been working on lots of things, figuring out this and that. Time spent more on the business side of things, sometimes, slow going. We've been doing some good things but It seems like nothing much though, that has the teeth worth reporting on. But, after many fine emails, phone calls, candygrams, etc. there are some things worth sharing. So for those who are interested in our coming year, it looks like this. Hopefully...

Tour in May. Midwest. 10 days or so. Dates will be posted as they come to us. We're working with Pepper Entertainment out of Sioux Falls, SD. So we'll see how that goes.

We should be able to dial in an EP for release in the fall. We'll probably start recording pretty soon here, and finish up in the summer. The idea would be to have a tour in place in the fall and really push the EP. I imagine we would, if all goes well, plan a series of tours to finish out the year and on into the next.

We'll be keeping busy. Hope to see out there.

Best to all

Love

Toby
