Well, it seems it has been forever since we last let you know what is going on in our world.

The band is currently still hard at work with the new album. It has been over a year since we started this project and the release date keeps getting pushed back.

We have been getting substantial interest from a number of different industry reps as well as input. We have ditched songs, re worked tunes, and even recently written a few new additions to the album.

Now that we have Niko in the band we have taken yet another turn in our music, in fact one might say we have taken things to a new level:) Niko's bass playing has really added to our sound and we think you'll all really dig the stuff we're doing.

As soon as we have a date set for the release we'll be posting it for all to see. Also we hope to have something for you all to hear before then as well. Once the album is completed we will be starting a tour to promote the album.

Also we want to thank everyone who has been writing to us and let you know what an inspiration you are to all of us. Without fans a band doesn't have work!

For now that is all as we are keeping hard at work to finally get this album done, two moresongs to go!!!

We are looking for album names so we'd love some input:) theband@chasingsatellites.com

Thanks for your patience and support.

Peace.

Hey there everyone,

You may have noticed that we have been a  little quiet for a while and off the radar. Since our last blog we have quiet a few new things to tell you all about.

Our last shows were two in a row that were part of the "Relay for Life" event. We played at the baseball field in Nanaimo at almost 11pm and then drove to Victoria to perform on their stage at almost 3am. We were very impressed to see everyone participating in the activities and staying awake... These types of things tend to bring people together as most of us have had cancer affect our lives in one way or another. A very close family member to one of the band was recently lost to cancer which was yet another reason for us to donate our time to this cause. We want to thank everyone that was there and hope to see you all again next year.

As you know we have been in the studio recording new material for our upcoming album. The process is slow as these things tend to be but very rewarding. We still have a ways to go but we hope to let you hear some of the new stuff as soon as something is ready.

We are putting everything into the new songs and making this project the best thing we've ever been a part of. Unfortunately our bass player Carl Schleppe is no longer going to be a part of this journey. We have had a lot of good times together and still will just not in the form of a band. We have our differences and have decided to move on musically. Carl is a singer songwriter at heart and will continue his adventures in music regardlessly and we will be there to support him.

Our new bass player is Niko Hook Nilsson. He has been our sound guy and guitar tech for some time now as well as my (Aaron) brother from the same mother which makes us now a brother band... we're now part of that group of select bands ACDC, Van Halen, Kings Of Leon, Oasis... Perhaps not that big but certainly a brother band.

Niko has been around the band long enough that the transition has been effortless. Carl had his own thing going on and a unique vibe he brought to the band and the music and now Niko has his own thing too. We all hope that everyone else enjoy what Niko has to offer as much as we do.

So aside from the studio time we are also working on our live show and rehearsing as a new band of brothers. We are serious about what we do and want to make Niko's debut one to remember. We rehearsed as a band for almost a year before we played our first gig, this time we're giving ourselves just over a month to prepare.

With more songs recorded and a new bass player we will start hitting the scene hard again by end of summer, for now everyone who can should come out to see Niko at Green Mountain Music Festival in Nanaimo on August 8th.

We also want to thank all the people that are downloading our ringtones from the web page. We have had so many downloads that we are one of the all time favorite ringtone downloads  on www.myxer.com which have over a million visitors a day!

Incase you don't already know we do have T-shirts availble for sale which can be ordered or bought at our gigs. If you are interested in getting more info on this subject just message us. We do read everything you send us so keep the messages coming!

We will be changing all our photos for ones from our newest shoots but for now we are leaving the ones with Carl until the new ones are available.

We appreciate all the support you give us and hope to see you all very soon,

Peace.

chasing-1Remember those long, boring history classes we were all forced to attend back in secondary school? If you remember correctly, Anik, which was Canada’s first satellite, was launched for the purpose of communication. Considering this context, I have never heard of a better name for a band like Chasing Satellites before.

This four man band is made up of a group of men who are destined to “bring back rock the way it’s supposed to be”. After listening to their music, I believe that you may very well agree.

PHIL: How did all of you get into music? How did you meet and form the band?

DAN: I have always been obsessed with music for as long as I can remember. It probably started when I’d rock out to Guns n Roses while playing solos on a broom stick. Then when I was 13 I got a guitar and started figuring out chords and learning on my own…

The band formed when I got a call from my old (and present producer) Rick Salt saying there was a guitar player I should meet. I’d recently had a bad brake up with my previous band that had had a good thing going on. At first I wasn’t too sure about getting back into the whole music thing, but now I would say its one of the best things that has happened to me.

AARON: I’ve always loved music. I grew up around my grandfather who played piano for 80 years. He started giving me lessons when I was four. By the time I was 7 I couldn’t stand being told I had to practice so I decided to stop playing the piano. Instead I found my step-dad’s old guitar and started trying to figure out how to use it… it only had 4 strings when I got it and after months (maybe longer) I got two more strings. No one told me to practice and in fact I was usually told to stop… 20 years later and I’m still playing the instrument everyday! There’s something soothing about even just having the instrument in my hand….

One day I got a call from my producer (now one of my best friends) who had recently finished recording a project I had started which hadn’t ended that well. He knew I wasn’t about to stop playing music, so he told me about this guy who had a great voice and could sing all night. He figured we should meet and maybe get something going on. He gave me Dan’s number and I called the guy up, about a week later we were jamming at his house. We jammed for about a year and started looking for other guys to form the band, he called some of his buddies and I called some of mine. Dan auditioned my school buddy Zack and we jammed out. Before Zack officially joined the band we probably played with about another 5 drummers. Zack’s the man and we’ll never have another drummer, great live and great in the studio! Carl was an old friend of Dan’s who had been a front man and guitar player in his own band around town. He and Dan had always gotten complemented on each others voices and how well they went together. Carl picked up the bass and has never put it down since. I think we tried out two guys before Carl… but he’s been there since day one even when it was just me and Dan jamming and he’d come over for a beer! I gotta say a huge thanks to Rick Salt for introducing me to Dan, my brother from another mother, and for consequently forming this band of brothers, best friends, called Chasing Satellites!

ZACK: I first got into music around Christmas right after I had turned 17. I got into drums through the suggestion of a friend who recently bought a guitar, and got into lessons and the rent to own a kit deal. My first major inspiration came from listening to a live Blink 182 cd. The sounds of the crowd coupled with amazing drumming started this continuing obsession I have now.

I met Aaron through college, we were both in the Jazz Program there. We played in a combo together, learning standards and all that, when Aaron asked if I would like to Jam with him and a buddy. We went out to Dan’s place which had a huge machine shop/perfect jam spot. I met Carl for the first time there as well, and we jammed and rocked out a bit. At first I really had to learn to hit the drums harder, rock is not the same animal as jazz. After I got more comfortable creating volume, I could keep up with the other guys and we just took it from there.

CARL: When I was really young, about 3 I used to listen to Allana Miles, Bruce Springsteen, ACDC, Ted Nuggent, and run around in circles until my parents would make me stop. Then in grade 3 I heard the first Nirvana single “Love Buzz” on a scate video, later on I heard Guns n’ Roses in grade 5 and by then wanted to start a band. I was singing all this time as I wanted to be a singer, but I realized that I needed to be able to play something to acompany me. So in grade 8-9 I started playing guitar and me and a buddy started writing tunes together. Since then I’ve played in bands non stop.

I used to go over to Dan’s and drink beers and hang out with him and Aaron. One day sometime later Dan called me up and told me to go buy a bass that I was in the band.

PHIL: It’s been said that you guys are bringing back rock “the way it’s supposed to be”. Do you believe that the rock genre has deviated from its roots?

DAN: I would say its changed. Before you just had to rock out now you need to be up with the new technology and new sounds.

chasing-2AARON: I think music used to be about the music. People would go into a studio and cut an album and then it would get played on the radio. There were no overdubs, not even drums (at first they were to loud to record in the same room), no auto tuning, no huge team of writers and business men behind the songs, it was just musicians recording their craft and creating music. Now we hear so much of same stuff that if you start doing something different you get told you’re not going to make it… I don’t think we sound like we’re groundbreaking anything new but I know that we write our own tunes, we play them like we mean it, and we try and do it the way people we listened to growing up did it. Our first album is us in the studio doing our thing, that’s how Dan sings, he has amazing pitch and one of the strongest voices I’ve ever heard… Zack’s a living metronome, Carl’s solid as a rock, and if I can’t play a solo and make it sound good I ain’t playing it. Better said, if we can’t play something, it doesn’t get recorded. We don’t need an album where most of the work is done by Pro-Tools fixing our mistakes. So bringing back the way rock’s supposed to be I would say is about being authentic, playing our hearts out ever night, and trying to stay true to what we believe in and not get swayed.

ZACK: I like to think of “rock” as a verb, just wanting to see a band go ballistic on stage, no matter the music they are performing. Seeing that kind of energy always makes the music more entertaining.

CARL: Yes. Rock originated with the blues, now it is so far fetched from blues that I would say it has come into its own. I think Dan’s lyrics are bringing it back as he stays true to himself and sings about stuff that’s important to him, he gives it soul.

PHIL: What was the inspiration behind “Under Repair”, the song featured with Toronto Experimental Artists?

DAN: This is a song about getting back in the saddle and pursuing music and dreams again, also its a bit of a F–k You to my old life.

CARL: This is really a question for Dan as he’s the lyricist. This said I remeber the time when he wrote it. He was making a decision to go forward and not deal with other peoples BS. He made lots of changes in all aspects of his life and said he was going to do it without any help, and make it on his own. And he has.

PHIL: If you were asked to perform a cover of one of the artists you’ve worked alongside (Evanescence, Sum 41, Sloan, ZZ Top), who would it be?

DAN: I would play “Tendency to Change” by Sideshow (Vancouver’s FOX SEEDS winners from a few years back).

AARON: I personally love ZZ Top, a little “Waiting for the bus” followed by “Jesus just left Chicago”, I love those guys. But for the purpose of a shout out I’m going to say “Turn it up” by KROME.

CARL: Any tune by our friends The Perfect Trend.

PHIL: Do any of you “chase satellites”? I find it kind of hard considering the sky is full of stars and airliners… it’s a hard task without a telescope.

DAN: Everyday.

AARON: I chase dreams everyday and I don’t plan to stop. Satellites, well I guess I’ll need to buy a telescope once I get a real job! Someone told me the other day that musicians don’t make money because we “play” music and if we want get paid we should “work” music… I’ll chase my dreams for free if it makes me happy!

ZACK: With a bionic eye its not too difficult.

CARL: I’m more into Foo Fighters.

Hey there everyone,

We are not sure if with the new myspace player format people have been able to download Trust so, just in case as we want to make sure you guys are listening to us on your iPods and Mp3 players, we have decided to give a free digital copy of our album "Dinosaurs in Stanley Park" to the first 100 people that e-mail us.

To do this all you need to do is e-mail aaron@playitloudmusic.com with the subject matter "FREE Dinosaurs in Stanley Park download".

Those of you that e-mail us will be receiving the new remixed and remastered tracks which are still making their way to the stores and are still yet to be posted on our player. The quality difference is considerable and we are very proud of the outcome!

As you are all probably aware we are working on our second album and we are taking the time necessary to make sure it is as good as it can possibly be. We feel that the tunes are stronger and a better representation of who we are today, especially now that we have been a band for longer. We have also realized that seeing us live is the best way to experience our music so we want to make sure that we capture some of that energy on our next album!

We have not yet decided on an album name so suggestions are welcome!!!

We appreciate all the e-mails and requests we have been getting from you all and learned of some new places we didn't even know existed in the process! Keep sending us messages and we'll keep finding ways to thank you.

As far as shows go we have a couple bigger events coming up and hope to be able to update you all so that you can put the dates down in your calendars and day planners. Our focus right now is on the recordings but we will be planning a tour in next little while for later in the summer, and of course closer to the time we will be announcing our  CD release party.

Thanks again for all your support and we look forward to your e-mails and getting you a copy of the album!

Peace.

So as you may have noticed we were doing some island dates as well as a few over in Vancouver and we wanted to let you know how they went!

The Roxy is always fun and feels like our home away from home. We had a record label out to see us as well as some other industry folk, some of which approached us about doing a music video, so we'll be starting on that probably as early as next month!!!

We were honored to rock out with some of Vancouvers youngest bands later that week at The Roundhouse Community Performance Center. It's a beautiful venue and is certainly worth catching a show at if you have the opportunity. We brought our buddy and possibly youngest fan Nick (you may remember him from a previous blog...) with us who came equiped with a case of Shark energy drinks... what is with kids these days... you'd think they would have enough energy already!

The Queens in Nanaimo is our hometown gig and it's always packed!!! We can't thank our friends and fellow Nanaimoites enough for all the support they have been showing us over the last year!  You really inspire us to keep doing what we're doing and  we'll find away of saying thank you in more than just words.

Is was awesome to see our friend Long John at The Garage in Duncan again. Make sure if you go there you ask him about the nose flute! We had twice as many people out than the last time and once again it was a really fun and intimate show to play.

Nick was assigned gear technician in Duncan by the club guys so we had some extra hands helping us with gear on and off stage. Thanks Nick!

For the first time in our careers we played for the Canadian Navy! Those guys know how to drink let me tell ya... Holy crap were people ever wasted.

We watched the UFC Fight in the mess with the navy boys and then watched our good friends from KROME play a rockin set before us.

I gotta say if you haven't seen KROME you should certainly take the time to go check them out as they are one of the tightest acts around! It's an onslaught of rock that will leave you singing their tunes for days... I talked to them about this, I told them I have to find a way to make the songs go away, they're too frickin catchy!

The Navy guys were awesome, you could tell they were there to have a good time and party with us (although some talked a lot about parting with them but I think they would have been lucky if they managed to walk to the door in a straight line let alone party with us!). They have a beautiful spot right out on the ocean with incredible views and an awesome stage. Word has it that civilians can show up and have a drink and watch the shows... so all you Victoria people should put The Fleet Club down as a place worth partying at.

By the time we left half the band was loaded except Dan and I (Aaron) who were making sure we got home safetly. We also had the addition of Randy (guitarist for KROME) who was well on his way to being just hammered.

Randy and Carl have a common passion for festive drinking so they sat in the back together talking about bands and by the end of the night you could here classic phrases like "I love you man..." "Seriously I'm no that wasted..." and other great indicators to tell you when somebody is drunk!

We made some pit stops on the way so people could empty their bladders. Somehow Zack ran and jumped into the van while it was moving and to celebrate his accomplishment held onto the door frame and let his body hang out the vehicle while it was moving. I suggested he come back inside the vehicle before a tree that was rapidly getting closer knock him off, so he swung his body with great momentum into the vehicle but not before whacking his head on the metal frame of the door. By the time we got to the next pit stop we could all see the golf ball sized bump on Zack forehead. Good one buddy!

Randy would keep telling us he had to go to pee but everytime we stopped he would walk around as if like a dog trying to sniff the right place, I think he ended up going on the beach eventually... It was quite hilarious.

Zack tried to convince us that he could stand on the top of a tall sign post that was as thick as a pice of cardboard. Fortunatly we managed to stop him although he still thinks he could of done it....

Carl sang KROME tunes non stop in the car while Randy tried explaning that although it was technically his birthday somehow George Bush had managed to screw it up for him meaning that it was now going to be in April... wow. I said happy birthday the next day to him and tried telling him about what he had said and of course it was all news to him. Anyway, happy birthday Randy and hopefully you can straighten things out with Bush...!

After finally getting home at 5am, driving some people to their houses and making sure Randy was propped up or walking as straight as possbile I found out that the clocks had changed... It was now 6am.... nice.

At 7am (1hr later) Shawn (lead singer from KROME) phoned saying he was sorry to call so late but did I know where Randy was. I let him know that he was on my couch and not to worry. I guess they had to leave so I was left with the job of trying to wake Randy up so that he could meet them downstairs to go to the ferry. Needless to say it didn't work so I just grabbed his bags from his band mates and he took the 5pm ferry later that day.

Once again back home on a Sunday this time with a cold/flu/throat thing and a need to catch up sleep. I forgot some friends were coming over for dinner and a movie. By the time they came over I had taken Neo-Citron and had decreased my energy and level of intelligence by half... good times. Best thing is we watched a movie about Quantum Physics...

Anyway, it's Monday and it has snowed like a mother@()#*@$ so I've suddenly had the chance to update you all!

We have some big shows coming up that are not posted yet but will be shortly and we hope to see a lot of you there. We'd love to hear from you all and see what's going on with all of you!!!

Thaks again for all your support!!!

Peace.

Current mood:  ecstatic
So, after the show on Saturday night we partied pretty hard... it was the first time in a while. We've been working pretty hard so we figured we were in need of a little bromancing.

The result was that when we got back to the hotel at some point we (Carl, Dan, Aaron, Aaron (our buddy and opening act), and Niko) decided that we would jump out of the hotel window and climb down the "beanstalk" (in real life it was a big honkin tree...!).

We then decided to go to Mac Donalds as a walk through and spend $70 on chicken products as there was nothing else. I think we maybe had one chicken burger each...I have no idea what happenend to the rest...!

When we got back to the hotel (after phoning a taxi to pick us up at the Honda Dealership, of course we were at Mac Donalds...) everyone else was asleep. so much for the food they had all wanted...

Seeing as our friends were asleep we decided to give them a little surprise when they woke up. We turned all the tables upside down, put the TV in the washroom, the ironing board in the shower, some french fries in the beds (so they could eat when they got up), clothes in the tree (and of course some shoes), the lamp shades on coat hangers, and to finsh it off we had strings of toilet paper all over the place to give it a festive feel.

And just to make sure we got the desired effect we put the alarm clock on (beeper mode alarm 1 & 2) with the two alarms set 20mins apart.

We then left the window open a jar and went back to our room (next door) and opened our window and waited for the festivities to comence.

So basically we became irresposible teenagers all over again. We're usually very responsable humans.

The next morning we all had massive hangovers.

The hangovers were so bad that Carl ended up projectile vomiting out of the tour vans side door while in motion. When Carl had finished (poor people sitting in the restaurants having breakfast, oh, and the cyclists behind us) Zack then needed to do the same, so more projectile vomiting out of the van door proceeded.

Carl and Zack were the only really badly affected by hangovers and did nothing but sleep in the back of the van all day. When they weren't sleeping they were throwing up. At one point Zack got out at an intersection and ran to the bushes. He started vomiting while standing and somehow ended up on his hands and feet vomiting on the side walk while people walked around him. Poor guy. I felt bad for the people too...!

When got to Duncan we found a cool music store where we hung out and played and jammed acoustically for a couple hours. It was awesome, Aaron (our amazing opener) was on banjo and dulcimer, Dan was on acoustic guitar, Niko (our tech/photographer/roadie) was on acoustic bass, and I (Aaron) was playing slide acoustic and banjo.

I picked up a really cool Dunlop 212 slide, my first that didn't require putting tape inside in oreder to fit my litle finger, Dan got some strings, and Carl and Zack got some rest (lol) in the van...

The Garage Showroom is an awesome venue and Longevity John makes it quite special. It has a great green room and an amazing stage with a very intimate feel. We highly recommend attending a show at this venue, you will not be dissapointed! The vibe is amazing... it's also the only completely all ages venue in Canada!

The show was one of our favorite and we really felt at home on stage. There was only one hick-up which was when Zack threw up in his mouth a little bit, other than that it felt like great set!

We got home at around 1:30am and all headed home to our places to order pizza for one last time... I don't know what the deal is but every venue that give food tend to provide pizza.... we're going to need o make some changes to our rider!

Anyway guys, it's late again so we'll leave it at this.

For those of you who see us as resposable good people don't let this account make you think otherwise, we're great guys...:)

Thanks for supporting us as much as you all do it means so much to us!

Peace.
