Burlesque Dancer to Show Off Mothering Moves in 'Wife Swap':
By Derek Sheppard (Contact)
Monday, January 28, 2008
By day, Ravenna Black is a mother, wife and real estate agent. By night, a burlesque dancer.
On Wednesday, she'll also be a reality television star.
Known as Ravenna Black on stage — her husband and two sons will appear on the ABC television show "Wife Swap."
The show takes two women — whose families have vastly different values — and asks them to switch places for two weeks. Each episode documents the drama that results when the husband and the kids are forced to adjust to a new matriarch in the family.
Ravenna Black, of Suquamish, heard about the show through her friends in the online community of burlesque dancers.
Aside from an adventure that "looked like a heck of a ride," she said the show and accompanying publicity would help get the word out about her night job and some of her charity work.
"I was really hoping to raise public awareness of what I do," she said of burlesque dancing.
It's a unique American art form that celebrates sexuality in a playful, respectful way that is a "step back" from the "in your face sexuality that has become the norm," she said.
She also hopes to bring attention to the Pinup Angels, a Seattle-based group of pinup models who send handmade care packages to troops deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The families in this week's swap are clearly different.
Ravenna went to upstate New York to live with the Robarge family. They are involved in lumberjack competitions, and the parents are more conservative in the discussion of the birds and bees.
Andrea Robarge comes to live with Dan M. and sons Tyler and Will in a musical household that's more candid and celebrates independence.
Though each family experienced struggles, it wasn't all oil and water.
Much of the Robarge family's activities revolve around husband Wally's professional lumberjack competitions, and the McDonalds' lives revolve around Ravenna's trips around the country to burlesque events.
Despite the different values, "there were a lot of similarities there," Ravenna said.

Fort Lewis spouse a calendar girl

Fort Lewis Spouse P. T., far right, and friends developed a calendar to support the troops.
The group has 15 angels right now, she says, and two more women will be accepted each year through an application process. "We really want to make sure the people that are volunteering for this actually have time to do fund-raisers, stuff care packages and want to submit photos," T says. "They have to do all the work."
T's husband, L., has been extremely supportive of the work she does. "He just loves it," she says. "He's very proud."
The T's are being relocated to Oklahoma in February, but The Pinup Angels will continue, according to T. "We're going to do this as long as soldiers need support." (names have been changed from original publication)
Pinups Angels' event will buoy troops
Pictures pay for care packages

EVERETT -- "Hot Rod" Heidi S lays across a pile of feather boas and vintage dresses, wearing leopard-print shorts and a white corset.
Robyn K, nicknamed "Miss Kitty Baby," stands on the railing of a ship wearing a one-piece bathing suit, platform heels and white bows in her hair.
Paige T, also known as "Cherry Lane," stands against a blue backdrop, wrapped in an American flag.
In the spirit of the posters that troops hung in their barracks during World War II, more than a dozen women from Washington, California and elsewhere in the country are selling pinup-style portraits of themselves to raise money for care packages for U.S. troops in Iraq.
Their group, The Pinup Angels, has raised enough money since July to send 55 care packages to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"I've always been about supporting morale and spirit for the troops," said Sawdon, 31, who owns The Sunken Ship tattoo parlor in Everett with her husband, Matt Sawdon.
Sawdon said she's always been inspired by the pictures of women painted on the noses of World War II airplanes.
Kendall, 36, a former Marine, helped start Pinup Angels because she understands the importance of having support from home after having served during the Gulf War. She founded the group with Teak, an Army wife who lives at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, and Southern California resident Laura Dunn -- nicknamed "Lola Dee" -- who has two brothers in the Marines. Sawdon's father served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and other countries.
Many of the women came to know each other through shared interests in vintage clothing, hot rod cars and rockabilly music. Several of the women are heavily tattooed.
From noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, members of Pinup Angels plan to be at The Sunken Ship Tattoo Shop at 3408 Everett Ave. to collect items and cash donations for care packages. Items can include anything from DVDs and CDs to socks, books and toiletries. Photos of the women can be purchased online for $5 each at thepinupangels.com.
"You have to respect your military and do everything you can to support them, and I grew up thinking that way," said Teak, who comes from a military family. "That's why we started Pinup Angels, because a lot of soldiers weren't getting that support."
The group is aiming to send more than 200 packages to Iraq during the holiday season. Along with the usual supplies, the group also includes pinups with their care packages. They don't send photos to married men without prior consent, Kendall said.
"We are inspired, and we are following in the footsteps of people who have been doing this since World War II and before," Kendall said.
In their pictures, the Pinup Angels never appear nude, Kendall said. They pose in vintage lingerie, bikinis and dresses.
Sometimes, amused servicemen mail back their own pictures. In one, a shirtless Marine looked back over his shoulders at the camera, his lips puckered for an imaginary kiss.
"It's a morale booster," Sawdon said. "It's something the guys might not necessarily need, but it's a comfort."
Pinup Angels is planning to use The Sunken Ship in Everett for its future donation drop-off days. It's a fitting location because it's not far from Naval Station Everett, Sawdon said.
Not everyone in Pinup Angels agrees on the merits of the Iraq war, but the women rally around each other to support their loved ones in battle.
"I believe supporting the troops really shouldn't be about whether you're pro-war or anti-war," Sawdon said. "I felt I could put my name on that. It's very neutral."

The Pinup Angels in BAD KAT MAGAZINE
Online- http://blog.myspace.com/badkatmag
They call themselves the Pinup Angels, but they are really true red, white, and blue pin-ups. They have brought back the roots of pin-up by supporting our troops overseas. Pin-ups have been giving uplifting moral support to our soldiers since WWI. Now in 2007 there has been no change with the Pinup Angels. We all read and watch the news about what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan and what our political parties fight over. What we should not forget is that the soldiers are the people who are really fighting this war, and the Pinup Angels know this. Pinup Angels is co-founded by pin-Up models Cherry Lane, Lola Dee, and Kitty Baby. They know first hand what our troops go through. Cherry Lane is an Army wife, Kitty Baby is a Marine, and Lola Dee has two brothers serving in the Marine Corps. They have come together to support our troops by starting Pinup Angels. They send care packages to the troops deployed overseas. The packages are filled with snacks, toiletries, magazines, and other media. They also drop in a photo or two of themselves doing what they do best. To pay for making the care packages the Angels sell photos of themselves that you can buy from their myspace page. To find out a little more about the Pinup Angels we are giving a short Q&A to the founders.
When and who got Pinup Angels started?
Pinup Angels was co-founded by Cherry Lane, Miss Kitty Baby, and Lola Dee. We formed as Pinup Angels in the summer of 2007 to find a create way to fund raise to be able to support our troops more. It is a way to put our pinup prints to work and get other gals involved as well. Most importantly, it provides love and morale to our troops.
How many care packages have you sent out?
Under the name Pinup Angels we have currently supported ten individuals and two platoons of Marines and Soldiers in August. A large amount of Halloween care packages will have gone out by the time this article is posted. We are rallying hard to provide as much as we can at Christmas time. With large groups of gals in the North West and Southern California areas involved, as well as a few others scattered about the country, we are hoping to send at least over a hundred boxes at Christmas time. We also get a lot of support from folks who want to support our troops, but aren't necessarily Pinup Angels. This help is extremely valuable to us! One thing that helps us be skilled at raising money, collecting goods, and sending packages is that we have been doing this in one form or another since the beginning of this war.
What has your response from the troops been like?
Everyone is thankful and kind to us. One thing that surprises them is that they find the stuff we send so useful and helpful. Although we include pinup prints, we are always classy and never act as a dating service. The troops are always extremely respectful and grateful to us for what we send.
What goes through your mind when making a care package?
We focus on making our packages practical and fun at the same time. We want to send them what they need and what they will enjoy. We also pack the boxes carefully so that they are full, all the space is used wisely, and our stuff makes it to them safely. We are careful not to pack prohibited items, make sure that our address labels and customs forms are clear and correct, and that our boxes are taped securely. This ensures that our boxes get where they need to and without problems. We also divide our goodies evenly and make the boxes fair. It's important to respect the wishes and generosity of our donors when packing the boxes too. The last thing that goes through our mind when packing a box: "Is it 3 am already?"
What do you plan on doing next with Pinup Angels?
We are currently building a website that will be www.thepinupangels.com. We have a long list of events we wish to have booths at in 2008 where we will be selling and signing our prints. One very important event will be the 3rd annual Hot Rod Hodown in Colorado in August. The car show event will be a fundraiser with the profits going to Pinup Angels Troop Support Funds. The organizer, Herbie, is very passionate about what we are doing and is even building our website. We will have as many Pinup Angels there as possible and most likely hosting a care package party in the days following the event. Join us by visiting www.hotrodhodown.com. In the long run we hope to continue to provide a little extra for our deployed troops by a lot of hard work and generosity given by our Pinup Angels and supporters.
Here at Bad Kat Magazine would like you the reader to stop at the Pinup Angels myspace page at http:www.myspace.com/pinupangels and place an order now. You can help them by placing an order of your favorite pin-up model's photo. If you wish to contribute more you can also make a donation on their site. Please help the Pinup Angels and support our troops. All money goes into the care packages, so place an order today.
