One half rockumentary and on half sitcom, The Dark Desert is loosely based on singer-songwriter, poet, entertainer, artist, Shawn Mafia and his struggle between working at the local funeral home and chasing after musical success as well as his poetic muse. Filmed from the dark recess of the Mojave Desert.

Sunday 19/08/2007
I was just lingering in the middle of the night. Attached to notions soaked in Miller High Life. I phoned the Captain to get her position. Engaged in nefarious goings on down at the J.T. Balloon. So I spoke into the bad connection my cell phone was generating.
"Come on and get me!" I announced in a lonely room, in a lonely night, in some solitary section of the Mojave desert.
    Her reply, "Sure as shit!"
So I was off again. Trying to soar with enlightened alcoholic wings. Captain Black Berry would leave the Saloon and arrive in a mater of minutes. I thought about putting on a clean shirt but decided that would take to much effort … to much of a physical and emotional strain. And I was already drunk to the tits, half way through a twelve, poised and pissed, ready for action in some form or another.
Having arrived at the J.T. Balloon, the only bar in the one horse town that constitutes Joshua Tree, CA I was feeling my buzz to be in dire jeopardy! The bouncer didn't ask for I.D. as we shuffled past a few marines with high and tight haircuts that all looked like inbred brothers. They where in a big hurry to leave, realizing the joint was off limits to service men. Or perhaps the ratio of boys to old white trash women was just to much to over come. I was in desperate need of a stiff drink or a beer or something liquid with a proof attached to it.
Seated at the bar I ordered a Pabst Blue Ribbon and a shot of well whiskey. They hip hop was loud and obnoxiously booming. The D.J. was obviously a second rate hack that would be better off rotating tires down at Wal Mart then spinning discs in a night club.
The bar was fairly large, enough to park a half dozen stolen cars into if you removed the pool tables. Up on the dance floor, where the owners had recently installed a stripers pole, middle aged women in tight jeans that hung at their hips and low cut shirts with beer bellies exposed gyrated and grinded in freaky anti rhythms unable to connect with perplexing noise expelled from overdriven speakers. A middle aged Mexican parolie with a bald head and a handle bar mustache attempted to dance and bump against their bulging asses. Trying for one last big bang out of the circus canon before he was picked up on the way home for drunk in public and outstanding warrants.
So much action for the eyes. I would need to make an appoint with my optometrists in the morning for fear of going blind.
I excused myself from the Captain to take a piss and then retire to the patio for cigarette. While smoking outside I was engaged in idle conversation by a fifty plus women that was so drunk her dentures were stumbling from one side of her mouth to another. She made overt sexual gestures and I puffed my smoke quick and furious in preparations for a speedy exit.
Back on my bar stool the Captain was anxious and frantically loud. Yelling at me to finish my beer at once because we had to make tracks. She had been approached by a skinhead with jailhouse tattoos and the muscles to match that apparently wanted to kick the living shit out of me for fucking his old lady last week. As the Captain tried to talk him down, explaining that my name was not David and that I wasn't even in the state at the time, he just seemed to drunk to reason with. Hell bent on turning my face into silly puddy.
I agreed to leave at once and go back to the ponderosa to continue on with my twelve pack of Miller high Life where the music was magic, the population of the room small, and threat of imminent danger more tolerable. I awoke the next day, not so much with a pounding hangover, but with a foul memory in my mind. The bar scene these days is enough to make anyone go sober …
