The Walkmen/Kaiser Chiefs..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Kool Haus

April 18th, 2007

The Kool Haus has had its share of amazing live acts this year, but none of them as anticipated as the return of The Walkmen. Unfortunately, this time the New York indie rockers would not be the "main-event" of the evening, they would have to share the night with Brit-rock band Kaiser Chiefs. Waiting in line for this show was very painful for most people. The very pretentious Edge 102.1 interns tried their best to stand out and entertain the crowd, even going as far as putting condoms on their heads. A few of us got a quick glimpse of Hamilton and Matthew as The Walkmen made their way into the venue. When everyone was finally allowed to enter the Kool Haus, the night started off very slowly because another opening band, The Annuals, were running late and it was still undecided as to whether or not they would still be performing. A lot of the older crowd sent their time at the bar, possibly trying to get drunk enough to be able to handle Kaiser Chiefs and to hype them up for The Walkmen. When the show finally got underway, The Walkmen got right down to business. They played a lot of new stuff in the beginning of their set, which helped get the crowd started. Hamilton's vocals were very powerful during their performance of "The Rat". A lot of lighting used during the song gave their set a more groovy feeling, which the fans really responded well too. The boys brought in a trumpet player and a trombone player during "Louisiana", which made them sound like a mini orchestra of sorts. "Little House Of Savages" had the whole crowd going crazy. Hamilton's vocals were amazing, but I felt bad for the man because it seemed like he was killing himself. The crowd was treated to some of his trademark stage antics, which include: flailing his mic stand around like a wild man and kicking everything and anything in his path. Matthew was furious on the drums, which added fuel to this fiery crowd of Walkmen fans. After all the excitement was over, the Brooklyn boys went back to playing slower songs.  Paul's piano playing during "What's In It For Me" was incredible, Hamilton gave much softer vocals during the song, which had every heart in the crowd melting, especially the young girls. Their 45 minute set was short, but very sweet. They ended the night with a song from "Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone". Paul was given a noise maker, which sounded beautiful with his piano playing and gave them a sound similar to fellow New York indie rockers The French Kicks. After the Walkmen lefted the stage, most of their loyal followers left as well. Out of curiosity, some people stayed to see if Kaiser Chiefs could regain the spotlight after having their own show stolen from them.  Their set unfortunately was like most of their work to date, very mediocre.  Their new single "Ruby" was able to generate a mild rise out of their fans, but was hardly impressive. Their new record gave them a few upbeat tunes that held the momentum of their young crowd for about half of their set, but the momentum died down once they had used up all of their hit singles. The Walkmen have proven once again that you don't have to be in the main-event to steal the show and with the success of their record "A Hundred Miles Off" and another record due out in 2008, expect to see these full-blooded New Yorkers steal the show once again.

I was living with Alin, life was hella sketchy, and I really just didn't know what the fuck I was doing. I thought I had this huge friend circle and now it's like I talk to maybe 5 people in Windsor. I remember when I took Alin to The Stills show last April. He was so high and we almost got stopped at the border. I met Kenny, which was pretty awesome cause we still talk and Peggah and Jasmin were there. That random girl from The Stills is still the topic of discussion because she is such a damn loser. Booty grinding of the lead singer of The Stills, like who the hell does and she kept bragging about good music, but she knew nothing about it hahaha. Alin wanted to get her number cause she apparently looked easy hahaha....ohhh that Alin. I was working at Slices, which is my favourite job to date. Sean tells the most inappropriate jokes at the most appropriate times hahaha. He is the man in my books cause he didnt give a shit about what people thought about him or his work. Right now, I'm unemployed( but not for long), watching The Hills to pass my time hahaha, and writing for whomever will publish my work. Sometimes I think to myself "Dude, why the fuck are you still here", cause I've been through the ringer so many times. I realize now that every individual has to go through trials in their life to really feel whole. I've had my trials and tribulations, and now I'm ready to play this game called Life. That is all........

Today my cousin and I went to Eb Games to look into a PS3. While at Eb Games, this game called Cooking Mama caught my eye. I first heard about this game on Electric Playground and thought it was so fucking lame. I went to ask the dudes that were working if this game was any good and apparently it's one of Nintendo Wii's biggest sellers. The whole talk about Cooking Mama turned into a 20 minute joke about how much I secretly like this game, even though I really don't like it. Here is a little bit of our conversation :

Max- Dude, can you please tell me who made this fucking game ?

Dude- Haha....oh you mean Cooking Mama

Max- Yeah dude....I mean who would pay $59.99 to play a game about cooking

Dude- Hahaha yeah man I hear you, but I'll tell you one thing, that little girl is making a lot more money than you right now

Max- Meh yeah your right.

Dude 2- Come on dude you know you like Cooking Mama....cause I mean if you didnt....why would you bring it up ?

Dude 1- Yeah man.....ohh shit dude....maybe you are Cooking Mama

Max- Hahahahaha oh god

Dude 2- Hahaha.....dude from now on when you come into this store.....you will forever be known as Cooking Mama.

Those guys were awesome and yeah the rest of the convo was just jokes about me secretly being Cooking Mama, which is very possible muhahaha. It was a pretty fun day overal, but I'll never buy a PS3.....EVER!!!

Journalism Broadcast

Broadcast Radio

Broadcast Television

  1. Seneca would be a good school to attend because of the kinds of programs offered. I tend to look for a college that can give me the best education, which is why I chose to pursue an education at Seneca. I believe that if I work hard, Seneca will provide me with the education needed to excel in any of three industries.

  1. Journalism is one of my program choices. I chose this program because I've always had a passion for music journalism. As a child, I wrote a lot of music and watch quite a bit of music television. Music journalist such as: Hannah Sung, Chris Nelson, and George Stroumboulopoulus were all big influences on my career choice. Radio Broadcast is something I became interested in last year, while working at a pizza place. My co-worker Sean worked in Radio for over 10 years and gave a lot of good insight into the industry. He introduced me to this radio show called CBC Radio 3, which is a show that discusses and plays music from artist in the Canadian independent music scene.  Sean and I have quite a bit in common, so hearing his stories about interviewing Modest Mouse and having his own record label have made me want to pursue Radio Broadcast as a career. Television Broadcast is my third choice for Seneca. I chose this program because I am interested in a lot of the "behind the scenes" aspects of television and would love to learn more about this industry.

  1. Programs I currently use or have used are: Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Picture Manager.

  1. As a child, I was always received good grades in History and Art. I still had interest in both subjects in high school, but I started to really excel in Science and English in Grades 11 and 12. I enjoyed English because it gave me the opportunity to become a better writer. We did quite a few essays, which helped me learn more about what makes a good piece of writing.

  1. I have attended College once in Windsor, Ontario. I was enrolled in St. Clair College in September 2005 for Advertising. The program wasn't very well structured and the teachers were not as helpful as people would think. I withdrew from the program in January 2006, due to a family crisis.

  1. Unfortunately, I haven't taken any extra programs related to my area of study.

  1. I have just recently received an unpaid intern position with an online Magazine called Celery. I had a phone interview with party photographer Mark Hunter (A.K.A the Cobra Snake), and a live review of the Kaiser Chiefs and The Walkmen concert. Both of these pieces will appear in the May issue of Celery Magazine. I have also done a few live reviews for music blogs.

  1. I have a few magazines that I read quite a bit. Some of the music/pop culture magazines I read are: Vice Magazine, Exclaim! , Spin, URB, The Source, XXL and Rolling Stone magazine. I usually read the Toronto Star at least once everyday and I read Now Magazine weekly. I have read the New York Times once online, but I don't read it that much.

  1. There was an article about young interns that I found very interesting. They made reference to Corey Kennedy, who happens to be the 15 year old intern for the Cobra Snake. Also, there was an article in the New York Times about some of the new transitions in the indie rock scene. It discussed how more female guitarist are making a name for themselves in the scene, which is very important to know because being a music journalist I have a responsibility to be aware of any new changes currently in the music scene.

  1. I find myself listening to CBC Radio 3 quite a bit and I also listen to the news whenever I'm on the road. As far as television, I'm currently watching "I'm Rolling Stone". The show is about six young journalists, who are all working towards a full time position with Rolling Stone Magazine. I also enjoy watching The Hills because it's one of the only good reality television programs that MTV airs. There are programs I watch all the time, such as : The New Music, Nancy Grace, The Situation Room, CBC News, Talk Soup, Saturday Night Live, The Wedge and Late Night With Conan O'Brian.

  1.  Besides talking to friends, I have actually got the chance to chat with some other people in the industry. I just recently spoke to Colin Stutz (Intern at Filter Magazine, "I'm From Rolling Stone") and he gave a lot of good advice on how to be a successful journalist. A lot of the people I have spoke with work more in print journalism, but having knowledge of both print and broadcast will give me the opportunity to excel in both areas. One thing I have learned from talking to people is that anyone can say there a journalist, but you have to be dedicated and ready to work hard to stand out of the crowd. Speaking to Sean helped me understand why he was so successful in Radio.  It's a career that can really benefit you in other ways. For example, Sean made enough connections while working in Radio to start a record label. He has also made quite a name for himself in the music scene being in other bands and his current band, The Golden Hands Before God Conducts Incredible Magic Band & The Spirits has been doing very well.

  1. My main goal is to work for a big music station. I would to work for MTV, CBC, or Much Music one day because I like to contribute to the exceptional programming these stations provide. I can also see myself trying to work for magazines and other forms of media somewhere down the line.

  1. My internship at Celery has given me a small taste of what is expected from a journalist. I think having the knowledge and background I have will make me a good applicant for these programs because I have actually gained some insight on my chosen field of work. Going on tour with bands and making connections along the way have all played a huge part in my passion for journalism and radio. I believe that whether it is music journalism, radio, or television, the experiences I've had thus far will help me do well in these programs.

I wish I could've spent more time on this, but as usual I procrastinaed and it's really half assed. I'm gonna do some editing before I have to hand it in at the orientation at 6:30 today. Wish me luck

Ok so it's obvious that I love this show, but now I'm gonna give a rundown on what I think about each of the journalist and how I feel about each ones work.

-Krish : My girl Krish has been quick to make her position in Rolling Stone known. She wants to bring the hood to Rolling Stone. I didn't know she had such a long resume. I read her work on XXL and was blown away. I think if she can bring her A++ game and get an opportunity to show why she was so successful in HipHop magazines she will excel at Rolling Stone.

-Pete : I have yet to see Pete really step up his game so I'm gonna wait and see what he's got.

-Russell : Biggest shocker of the show to date. I hated this guy when the show started and now I love him. He is one of the more versatile writers of the group. I just wanna ask him if I ever met him where he learned his dance moves cause some of them are pretty hype haha.

-Tika : Rude gyal!!!!.......Tika is killing it right now. Her interview with The Roots was incredible and if she would've been more aggressive that Jay-Z story would have been flawless. I can see there being drama between her and Krish, but only time will tell.

-Colin : This kid is adorable haha. I love the fact they brought an "indie kid" to Rolling Stone. His work in Filter Magazine is incredible and what he has done on the show so far is really good. I think he should've taken control of the We Are Scientist interview, but then again those boys are hard to deal with haha.

-Krystal : I actually like her a lot. I didn't think she would very versatile as a journalist, but she has shown that she is ready to put in work. Till today I'm shocked that "Slug" from Atmosphere was trying to get her goodies hahaha, but then I've heard all the stories of bands on tour.

Ok so now if I had to rate these kids I would go

1.Russell

2. Tika

3.Colin

4.Krish

5.Krystal

6.Pete

Best music taste would go in this order

1.Colin

2.Krish

3. Russell

4.Tika

5.Pete

6.Krystal

In Order of hotness I would go

1. Colin

2.Russell

3. Krish

4. Krystal

5.Tika

6. Pete

I love this show way too much.......

THE STREETS LYRICS

"Blinded By The Light"

Thats the one, Oy
How did he not find the baggy, with his hand in my shoe?
Way too close for me, ah well at least they allowed me through.
Should be a good night in here, Ramo in the main room,
People keep pushing me though, no reception on the phone.
And i'm thinkin'...
(Light are blinding my eyes)
They said they'd be here they said, they said in the corner,
And im thinkin'...
(People pushin' by, and walkin' off into the night)
These look well speckly, bit of green and blue,
Freeze is well cheap though, so i'll take three if i need to.
Right im on the plan, i wish the bouncers would go away,
Borrow water off this man, here goes nothing OK,
And i'm thinkin'...
(Lights are blinding my eyes)
Thats proper rank, that tastes like hairspray
And i'm thinkin'...
(People pushin' by, and walkin' off into the night)
I hate coming to the entrance, just to get bars on my phone,
You have no new messages, so why haven't they phoned?
Menu, write message, so where are you and Simone?
Send message, dans number, where've they gone?
And im thinkin'...
(Lights are blinding my eyes)
Why's the message pending? where the fuck are ya?
And i'm thinkin'...
(People pushin' by, and walkin' off into the night)
Hmm, brandy or beer? Waters a good idea,
Wish that bar lady'd appear; and come serve over here.
Where the fuck could they be? still not over in the corner,
This nights a tragedy, i keep thinking i saw her.
And i'm thinkin'...
(Lights are blinding my eyes)
No thats not them, thats not them either...
And i'm thinkin'...
(People pushin' by, and walkin' off into the night)
I'm still not feeling anything, this has got to be a dud.
It's been ages since i necked it, and smoked six tabs to the nub.
Belly's not even tingling, i just feel a bit pissed..
No-one looks like minglin', i cant see her or him..
And im thinkin'...
(Lights are blinding my eyes)
I'm gonna do another i think. Yeah, one more, these are shit.
And i'm thinkin'...
(People pushin' by, and walkin' off into the night)
These toilets are a piss take, queue's bigger than the door.
Gotta get rid of this pill taste, what are they chattin so much for?
Glad i'm not a girl in this place, they'll be here til dawn.
Sure my belly's tingling a bit, somethings happening im sure.
And im thinkin'...
(Lights are blinding my eyes)
Maybe i shouldnt have done the second one, i feel all fidgety and warm...
(People pushin' by, and walkin' off into the night)
Whoa, everything in the room is spinning, i think i'm going to fall down,
My heart's beating to quick, i'm fucking tripping out.
I wonder whether they got in, turned away no doubt.
Who cares, this is a tune coming in, that who where hes like..
Im thinkin'...
(Lights are blinding my eyes)
My eyes are rolling back, i'm rubbing my thighs with my hand.
And i'm thinkin'...
(People pushin' by, and walkin' off into the night)
Yeah yeah they cheer - can they see my hand in the air?
Need to wave 'em over here. Swear Simone's kissing Dan.
My head is twisted sever, body's rushing everywhere,
They could have texted me when they were near, but i'm fucked and i don't care.
(Lights are blinding my eyes)
What was i thinkin' about? Ah who cares, i'm maaaashed.
(People pushin' by, and walkin' off into the night)
Totally fucked, cant hardly fuckin' stand.
This is fuckin amazing; argh.

Well a few days ago I posted a blog about my current school dilemma. The problem was that Conestagas Guelph campus doesn't offer journalism, but the Kitchener campus does. At first I was pissed because I've been planning to move to Guelph for ages and now I didn't know if I was moving anymore. Well now it looks like I'm not because of the fact hat I couldnt commute from Guelph to Kitchener every day or a Guelph to Toronto commute. I'm really sad about this decision because I love Guelph so much and I think it wouldve been a good place to settle down. The plan is now to go to Toronto and go to either : Seneca, Humber, or Centennial. I'm hoping Toronto will be good for my career and my life. Maybe I'll get my working visa and go to New York and live with Sarah hahaha...who knows what could happen.

I fucking love this show. Six journalist compete for a job with Rolling Stone magazine. They are only on the third episode, but I know there is gonna be some drama coming very soon because some of the writers have bad attitudes(Example : Krish). The show is so hot they are already working on Season 2. I would love to work for Rolling Stone...wouldn't you.....anyways if you have MTV Canada or U.S you should watch it.

Cheers
