Here's another review from BBC Introducing of THE CANTEEN on Saturday 18 April 2009 with YOUNG BRITISH ARTISTS / THE JANNOCKS / ROOK & THE RAVENS / OTTERSGEAR

The Canteen at Abode

Down at The Canteen, it would be rude to turn down the invitation from The Jannocks to "don't ask, just come in", especially when the musical fare is of such a high quality.

..

Mind you, vocalist Warren may be asking this of their guitarist who, due to the combination of a restricted playing space and a packed crowd, is almost sat on someone’s lap.
Far from being irked at this inconvenience, the band is revel in the level of intimacy.  Their initially gentle beats wash out and seep across the floor; three minute fluffy pop is not what The Jannocks are about. Growing in intensity and density, each tune builds and sways on a tide of rhythm and percussion for as long as they feel it takes.

Young British Artists

With more urgency and passion than a FA Cup semi final, they bring each number to a rousing climax that has those witnessing them for the first time chanting for more.

Rightly tipped amongst the promising crop of talent emerging from Manchester, Young British Artists occupy the angry guitar end of the musical spectrum.
Their bull horn speakers’ hang from the mic stand almost like an extra member to the unit, as the distorted, disenfranchised vocals are matched to the distorted, squealing guitars. Frustration and aggression are on display as guitars are squeezed and throttled for all they are worth, before the calm then follows the storm.

Whilst Phil Spector may be taking a sabbatical from producing records for a bit, his ‘wall of sound’ ethos lives on within Rook and the Ravens. It’s not so much an ‘everything plus the kitchen sink’ type of drama, but they do like a ‘big’ sound, one that can fill every nook and cranny of a venue.

On a warm spring evening like tonight, they provide sunshine pop ideal for the occasion, but then to prove they are more than a one trick pony, they drop into an almost countrified, bluesy segment.
Swapping vocalists dependant upon the style and feel of the number, it’s always controlled and passionate, and never strained. Managing to avoid hitting each other with their instruments, they depart to an appreciative applause.

Suzuki Method at Abode

The sweat is dripping down the outstretched arms of the crowd, who are punching their fists into the air. Be sure of one thing; the capacity crowd for The Canteen, inside a dimly-lit Abode, aren’t concerned by the cramped circumstances.

..

Instead, they are pre-occupied with moving, bumping, dancing to the sounds of Suzuki Method. Summer seems to just around the corner and the Salford band's sounds could provide the perfect soundtrack.

There’s just about enough space for the band to squeeze their instruments into, although the keyboards are so far out of sight, they're practically invisible.

They can still be heard though, as the thumping, electronic rhythms and beats provide the foundation for others to dance on. Aggressively, they keep the beat rate at the foot stomping level, in a way that the likes of The Whip or Delphic are currently exhibiting.

Set closer Ivory Tower allows their followers to indulge in one last blast of euphoria before they can catch their breath. The crowd know there isn't enough time for an encore but that doesn't stop them baying for more.
Almost every local band that is making a big noise in the Manchester music scene has appeared at a Canteen night recently, and based on tonight’s performance, this is the last time that Suzuki Method will be able to play at such a small venue before bigger things start calling.

BLOWOUT / THE CANTEEN reviewed on BBC Manchester Music

It’s less than eight days since the Blowout lot organised a 60-band showcase but they are not resting on their laurels. A showcase featuring Fraser King took place last night and now they have another more up and coming bands to put on.

Somehow Abode manages to create the Inverse Tardis effect - when you get through the doors, it seems as though 10 people would make the place look full. The advantage of this is that when a band takes to the area marked off for the stage, then they will at least have an audience to play to.

Prestige, as they were known then - 12 hours later they’ve changed their moniker to the catchy Catfish & the Bottlemen, have a confidence and self-belief in their ability.

With a delivery style much in the manner of the Arctic Monkeys, they do like to tell a tale over their catchy guitar foundations, and they have the crowd moving for the right reasons – so much so, that they plead with the sound man for another two songs to be allowed.
Well, be quick, as we’re only about an hour behind schedule, but that’s about right for a Blowout event.

The Hayley Faye Band have been intensively gigging and the hard work seems to be paying off – and the fact they kindly stepped in at the last minute as cover for a band that has pulled garnered them thanks from the promoters.

It’s not a substitution as such much a worthwhile addition in their own right. Hayley seems to have exercised her own identity issues - she was previously in a band called Hannah - and the exuberance spills from the band to the crowd.
They blast away from the start and provide a perfect way to say goodbye to January and look forward to sunny days.
