Cat Pulls a Fast One on Firefighters

MIAMI — It was the stereotypical firefighters-try-to-rescue-cat story, but with a twist. Firefighters from the South Florida city of Weston spent a sopping hour in pouring rain Tuesday trying to extract a kitten squeezed in the undercarriage of a stranger's Volvo.

The crew tried jacking up the car and taking off a wheel, all for naught. The feline ducked out of reach at each attempt to grab it.

At some point, the cat escaped undetected, prompting the crew to spend another hour peering in bushes and scouring a Walgreens parking lot.

They finally gave up and headed back to the station, answering at least two more calls on their way.

Five hours after the saga began, the elusive cat reappeared: At the station, in their fire truck's rear wheel well.

This time, firefighters used chunks of meatloaf to try luring it out. It was unenticed, so the crew resorted to an ultimately successful three-pronged strategy: One firefighter poked the feline in the backside with a Slim Jim, another used a hose to force it into an open compartment so a third person could pull it out.

The feline was dirty but unharmed.

dan fogelberg, a great american folk singer who's songs could make me misty with the first note of his music, died this past sunday.  i remember waiting with my sisters in my dad's station wagon as he ran into his store to run an errand.  dad left the radio on for us and dan fogelberg's song "Same Old Lang Syne" came on.  such a beautifully bittersweet song.  it remains one of my favorites.

i also found out that a classmate of mine, dan barts died this week.  i didn't know dan very well, but i knew him well enough to remember he was a nice boy with a very quiet and sweet demeanor.

i like to visit tom from time to time to see what's going on on his page. i don't bother with any of his comments as there are zillions and they pretty much say the same thing: 'you're awesome tom', 'i saw you the other nite, you're hot', and 'you rock'... a loooooot of originality out there.

anyhoo, i was surprised to find this awesome song and video, "electric sufin go go" by polysics. i've added it here for your viewing pleasure. the little girl dancing in the video is a true talent. and the song is super addictive. cheered me up right away! enjoy!

Mom: Web Hoax Led Girl to Kill Herself

News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch, who owns the social networking Web site ...
By BETSY TAYLOR, AP

DARDENNE PRAIRIE, Mo. —

Megan Meier thought she had made a new friend in cyberspace when a cute teenage boy named Josh contacted her on MySpace and began exchanging messages with her.

Megan, a 13-year-old who suffered from depression and attention deficit disorder, corresponded with Josh for more than a month before he abruptly ended their friendship, telling her he had heard she was cruel.

The next day Megan committed suicide. Her family learned later that Josh never actually existed; he was created by members of a neighborhood family that included a former friend of Megan's.

Now Megan's parents hope the people who made the fraudulent profile on the social networking Web site will be prosecuted, and they are seeking legal changes to safeguard children on the Internet.

The girl's mother, Tina Meier, said she doesn't think anyone involved intended for her daughter to kill herself.

"But when adults are involved and continue to screw with a 13-year-old, with or without mental problems, it is absolutely vile," she told the Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis, which first reported on the case.

Tina Meier said law enforcement officials told her the case did not fit into any law. But sheriff's officials have not closed the case and pledged to consider new evidence if it emerges.

Megan Meier hanged herself in her bedroom on Oct. 16, 2006, and died the next day. She was described as a "bubbly, goofy" girl who loved spending time with her friends, watching movies and fishing with her dad.

Megan had been on medication, but had been upbeat before her death, her mother said, after striking up a relationship on MySpace with Josh Evans about six weeks before her death.

Josh told her he was born in Florida and had recently moved to the nearby community of O'Fallon. He said he was homeschooled, and didn't yet have a phone number in the area to give her.

Megan's parents said she received a message from him on Oct. 15 of last year, essentially saying he didn't want to be her friend anymore, that he had heard she wasn't nice to her friends.

The next day, as Megan's mother headed out the door to take another daughter to the orthodontist, she knew Megan was upset about Internet messages. She asked Megan to log off. Users on MySpace must be at least 14, though Megan was not when she opened her account. A MySpace spokeswoman did not return calls seeking comment.

Someone using Josh's account was sending cruel messages. Then, Megan called her mother, saying electronic bulletins were being posted about her, saying things like, "Megan Meier is a slut. Megan Meier is fat."

Megan's mother, who monitored her daughter's online communications, returned home and said she was shocked at the vulgar language her own daughter was sending. She told her daughter how upset she was about it.

Megan ran upstairs, and her father, Ron, tried to tell her everything would be fine. About 20 minutes later, she was found in her bedroom. She died the next day.

Her father said he found a message the next day from Josh, which he said law enforcement authorities have not been able to retrieve. It told the girl she was a bad person and the world would be better without her, he has said.

Another parent, who learned of the MySpace account from her own daughter who had access to the Josh profile, told Megan's parents about the hoax in a counselor's office about six weeks after Megan died. That's when they learned Josh was imaginary, they said.

The woman who created the fake profile has not been charged with a crime. She allegedly told the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department she created Josh's profile because she wanted to gain Megan's confidence to know what Megan was saying about her own child online.

The mother from down the street told police that she, her daughter and another person all typed and monitored the communication between the fictitious boy and Megan.

A person who answered the door at the family's house told an Associated Press reporter on Friday afternoon that they had been advised not to comment.

Megan's parents had been storing a foosball table for the family that created the MySpace character. Six weeks after Megan's death, they learned the other family had created the profile and responded by destroying the foosball table, dumping it on the neighbors' driveway and encouraging them to move away.

Megan's parents are now separated and plan to divorce.

Aldermen in Dardenne Prairie, a community of about 7,000 residents about 35 miles from St. Louis, have proposed a new ordinance related to child endangerment and Internet harassment. It could come before city leaders on Wednesday.

"Is this enough?" Mayor Pam Fogarty said Friday. "No, not by any stretch of the imagination, but it's something, and you have to start somewhere."

Grow up people.  I am ashamed of any adult who would dare taunt a 13 year old girl to find out what was being said about their own child online.  It's petty and beyond immature.  No, those words don't even touch upon the absurdity of one woman and her family's actions towards a child.  A CHILD!

I am almost as equally ashamed of the dead girl's family for destroying property belonging to the other family.  How can we ever expect to evolve if we can't get past our basic instincts to harm others when they harm us?  Yes, this family did a bad thing, but what do you get by doing something bad to them?  Satisfaction?  How does destroying a fucking foosball table make you feel better about your daughter's death?

Goddammit, goddammit, goddammit, goddammit!!!

Dominic West – Theron
David Wenham – Dilios

Andrew Tiernan – Ephialtes

All right.  That's it.  I've had it.  I have been trying to write this damn review for nearly two weeks now.  It's just not coming along.  I suppose I've been trying too hard to be eloquent in my writing and it's not happening.  (Well, that and I took two days doing quests to get my Darnassus rep up to exalted so I could get an epic kitty cat mount.)  So eloquency be damned.  Hey, if people can change the way words are spelled, I can make them up.

300 was very good.  I loved it.  I'd love to see it again.  But I think I can wait for DVD.  Theaters suck.  The one I went to sucks.  I went the Sunday of opening weekend to my own chagrin.  But my hub Jared and our friend Dino talked me into it.  Damn them too.  The theater was crowded and they started Wild Hogs  I did my best to avert my eyes from the screen for fear of them being burned from their sockets. by accident.

So first the cons; if you know me, I like to save the best for last.

Cons:

  • The movie was a digital masterpiece; however there were too many scenes where you could tell the actors were on a set.  Don't get me started on the scene with Leonidas and Xerxes.  It looked like something from those old Sinbad movies.
  • The character of Queen Gorgo was not written terribly well.  One minute she's this strong voice of Sparta giving the okay to kill a messenger of Persia, the next she's blowing the bad guy to help her cause.
  • While the battle raged on the white sandy beach, blood was spilled.  A lot of blood.  A lot of digital blood.  And that white sandy beach remained a white sandy beach.  What the…?  They could digitally create vats of blood erupting from the Persian warriors but they can't soak the sand with blood?  I know it seems a little thing, but it's the little things that help immerse you in the movie-going experience.  I was at the Battle of Thermopylae ninety-seven percent of the way yet still had one foot on the theater floor.
  • Rodrigo Santoro as King Xerxes sucked.  He also plays Paulo on Lost and he sucks on that too.  I hate the new people.  Sawyer said it best "Who the hell are you?"  I'm strafing from the review.
  • Most of the best lines are in the trailer.  That made me sad.

Just 'cause the cons seem lengthy doesn't mean they outweigh the pros.  Really, I loved this movie.  It's just, I'm a critic, and I like to talk about the bad things.  It's fun!  Anyhoozlebees, read on.

Pros:

  • It's full of waves of freakin' hot guys!!!
  • Gerard Butler as King Leonidas is spectacular!  He was so good, even I was ready to follow him into bed, er, I mean battle.
  • Hot guys!
  • The battle sequences were amazing.  The way scenes were filmed was riveting.  The choreography had to be just so to get the right effect.  And they pulled it off well.
  • Ripped, bare-chested, gorgeous guys!
  • Although slow to begin, the movie gains great momentum making the battle scenes all the more heroic.
  • Watching Gerard Butler made my hair ache.  In a good way.
  • Amazing transition from graphic novel to film.
  • Hot!!!
  • The best two lines in the film aren't in the trailer.  And they were two of the greatest lines ever.
  • Waves, ladies.  Waves!!!

So that's my review.  The movie is based in truth but there was a lot of dramatic license of the story (my friend that went to the movie is a philosophy major with concentration in Greek history so I know of what I speak… yeah baby!).  Don't let that stop you from seeing the movie.  Get a hanger, suspend your disbelief, and go see this movie.  It's what going to the movies is about.  And it's about damn time!!!

Oh yeah, the hub was real happy I saw this movie.  He lovingly asked, "So, do you want the DVD for your birthday or Christmas?"

"This - is - SPARTA!"
