Oxfringe festival is running next year 24th March to 11 April and Coo will again be presenting a series of gigs in association with Oxfringe 2010.

Oxfringe is a relatively new festival taking place in various venues throughout the city showcasing comedy, music, theatre and performance from Oxford and beyond!

Oxfringe included live music last year for the first time and Coo organised shows with Stornoway, The Travelling Band, The Long Insiders, The Epstein, Borderville, Jake Flowers, Dial F For Frankenstein + more.

We have secured more dates at the Wheatsheaf this year in addition to the Jericho and the 02 Academy Oxford for an END OF FEST bonanza, which Whispering Bob Harris will be attending as Music Patron.

We can include u18 bands and bands don't have to be from Oxford!

There will be substantial press and media coverage for the shows, it's a great festival to get involved with - there will be a dedicated colour brochure + posters going out throughout Oxfordshire with details of the live music and events happening as part of the festival.

Bands need to register their band on the Oxfringe website http://www.oxfringe.com - no obligation for initial registration!!

There is a small fee per band if you do perform, which will go towards the publicity costs.

So sign up and we'll contact you asap with further details as soon as we can!

If you want to get in touch with me direct to ask me any questions or discuss dates then message me or email me on info at coo promotions dot co dot uk.

Thanks, Autumn Coo

Malcolm Middleton's Long, Dark Night
An intimate evening with Scotland's second favourite Arch-Miserablist. Hopefully uplifting, quietly depressing, Malcolm will perform a collection of comforting wintery acoustic songs about love, hate, death, and other stuff.

CURLY HAIR
Curly Hair are the latest group to appear from the never ending well of amazing talent that the Brighton based Willkommen Collective seem to spit out every month or so. See; The Leisure Society, Shoreline, Sons Of Noel & Adrian, Laish Quartet, The Miserable Rich… you get the picture. Yes, they’re a ‘folk’ band – there’s no getting round that, but their ramshackle recordings; boy-girl vocals; use of thrift store keyboards and indeed an all round lo-fi pop ethic really do pull them apart from the more traditional folk kneelings of say, Sons of Noel & Adrian or Shoreline.

"an unbelievable voice...the premier league of British songwriters"
The Sunday Times

Though he spent most of his formative years in the grim surroundings of 1980s Belfast, singer/songwriter Foy Vance's musical vision is the product of an entirely different sort of nervous tension -- the cross-racial friction, harmony, and disharmony that gave rise to jazz, blues, and soul in the American South, where Vance, the son of a traveling church minister, spent the pivotal first five years of his life.
Drawn particularly to the spiritual aspect of those music forms, Vance took his cues from the likes of Otis Redding and Nina Simone, adjusting his own guttural singing style accordingly, and his distinctive Northern Irish lilt finds an obvious point of comparison in similarly styled compatriot Van Morrison.
Musically, Vance draws as much from the British folk tradition as he does American music; this influence manifests itself in the rhythmic, invariably alternately tuned, acoustic guitar style that is almost as prominent a melodic voice on much of his work as piano or vocals.
For those who missed his sold out performance last year for Coo .. get a ticket, you won't regret it.

KILL IT KID
Fronted by the gorgeous two-part vocal harmonies of singers Chris Turpin and Stephanie Ward, the lyrical intimacy of the songs is rendered all the more powerful by the interplay between the pair, Turpin’s singular and distinctive voice seemingly arriving from another time and place, while Ward’s softer, huskier tones form the perfect foil. Buttressed with strings, keys and slide guitar, Kill It Kid blend delta blues and roots to striking effect, producing blistering, unapologetic rock’n’roll one moment and a smoky film-noire ambience the next. The band have already drawn comparison to Tom Waits, Frank Zappa and Zeppelin, as well as more recent examples Gomez, Mumford & Sons and The Raconteurs, but it’s on the strength of the songwriting throughout this debut that the deal is ultimately sealed, and with an average age of only 21, the band are apparently in possession of a musical wisdom well beyond their years.

William Fitzsimmons + guests

8pm

Bearded cult favourite US singer-songwriter whose acoustic folk songs have been featured in TV's Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill. He was raised by two blind parents in a very musical family home. He is often compared to contemporaries Sufjan Stevens and the late Elliott Smith, not only for his unique style and skill in writing and proclivity to deal with substantive and evocative subject matter, but also for his use of organic and colorful melodies and arrangements.

The third of Fitzsimmons's self-made CDs, "The Sparrow and the Crow" was named iTunes' No. 1 singer-songwriter album of 2008 before its release, and with over 4 million hits on his myspace you can watch him quietly and subtly becoming a star. Catch him on one of only 4 UK dates on his huge European tour.

This is a quiet gig and people will be asked to respect that while the artists are performing tonight. Readmission is allowed.

Coo presents - Oxford Winterlude
A special WInter's evening in the heart of Oxford at the beautiful Holywell Music Room, in the company of three of the finest Oxford bands around.
This is a triple bill with an acoustic / stripped down vibe - line up announced on the night, so come early and settle in for the night. Expect a magical time amongst friends, and take some special memories home for Christmas.

The Epstein
The Epstein have fused an intrinsically American sound with an endless English folk history that seeps out of the fabric of rural Oxfordshire. The band are seemingly instilled with an ethos of making music that's the sound of participation, of inclusiveness and pure unadulterated joy. When the alt-country scene starts getting the attention it so richly deserves it will be The Epstein that shine as its brightest lights.

Richard Walters
"Exquisite agony" - Uncut magazine ****
"Dazzlingly Beautiful, Fragile And Mesmeric " - Clash Magazine
Album 'The Animal' is co-produced by David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Faultline) and Ant Whiting (MIA, Paloma Faith, Zero 7) and features the single Brittle Bones and his Daniel Johnston cover True Love Will Find You In The End.
Richard Walter's gentle falsetto, free from theatrics and histrionics, means that the subjects of his songs come as a surprise. The mood is of quiet despair and unfulfilled desire, of anxiety and dismay, of melancholy and longing.

The Winchell Riots
Formed over a love of the novels of Philip Roth, mixing up Death Cab For Cutie with Bjork and Sigur Ros, and with support slots ranging from iLikeTrains to Michael Rother (Kraftwerk/Neu! founding member) already the buzz is building. With shows booked nationally across the UK in late 2009, this looks like a bright year for The Winchell Riots. After a mighty three dates in three months residency at Oxford underground club The Cellar, their December appearance will be a stripped down acoustic set.. expect beautiful things.

This City

ThisCity have been already been described in review as “like The Travelling Wilburys if it was made of members of Bloc Party and At The Drive In”. Maybe if you throw in the eyeball-popping nuances of Blood Brothers, the same turn-on-a-sixpence disco-jerk rhythms of the more danceable end of punk (think Les Savy Fav or !Forward Russia!), the impassioned cacophony of mid 80s Dischord Records-led emotional hardcore, the pop sensibility of tykes such as The Automatic and subtract the reference to Tom Petty and co, we might just be inclined to agree…

Funeral Suits
Hotly tipped threepiece hailing from Dublin & Limerick, these guys were hand picked by Franz Ferdinand to support them on all dates of their Irish tour recently. Over in the UK for a few dates they have stayed on especially to come and play for Coo in Oxford. These guys ROCK. Watch this space...

Flipron

.. a brilliantly upbeat collection of musical dolly mixtures that instantly lifts any doom and gloom in a way that few new albums can accomplish.
Belfast Telegraph. 5/5 CD of the Week

Flipron play a madcap mix of slide guitar blues, lap steal Hawaiian, 40's and 50's Hammond organ, clarinet, banjo, 1930's French accordion and ukulele laced with a magpie-like concoction of vaudeville punk. Likened to anyone from Syd Barrett and The Kinks to Jacques Brel or the Libertines, a "campy, theatrical pot of alt-noir French café wallpaper and off-Broadway Rocky Horror enunciated in the Cribs-like accent of common English swine." Unmissable.

Borderville

"Sounds like a hold-up in a costumier's" - Oxfordbands.com

A musical-theatre collage of sparkly new bleeps woven into a big concept narrative. Many indie bands falsely claim they sound nothing like their peers; for good or ill, Borderville can make that claim with a cocksure degree of certainty. Chanelling the spirits of Kate Bush and Bowie Borderville re-imagine glam rock with towering walls of sound and ornate flourishes of baroque piano, all imbued with the morbid romanticism of a drunken Rufus Wainwright harbouring an ugly vendetta.

Opening with bright young Witney starlets in the making Hearts in Pencil with their evolving style of swaggering indie punk ska with swooping riffs, crashing chorus's and urban commentary. Watch out.

The Epstein

"The Epstein have recorded this beguiling debut with an overwheing sense of ingeniousness and enthusiasm... There has not been a better band to come out of England this year, The Epstein play in another league - in a vast, desert like land of the soul." Rolling Stone (****) Germany

Oxford darlings and Glastonbury Emerging Talent Winners The Epstein take us on a wondrous journey through cinematic dustbowl blues, wildman folk, americana and alt. country rock.
The gorgeous songs and unique sounds they create are enhanced by the variety of instruments they use.

Jake Flowers

"... the closest you'll ever get to seeing Jack White playing folk music" Birmingham Live
“The brilliant Jake Flowers…the time is right” Kerrang Radio
Within the country-groomed folk pop of Jake Flowers there lies a classic simplicity that will transcend the test of time. Dressed in country tweeds he performs with an acoustic guitar, a strong vocal and a sole bass drum that together never fail to entice a crowd, certainly to silence and even on occasion to tears.

FOY VANCE

"an unbelievable voice...the premier league of British songwriters" The Sunday Times

Foy Vance is an acclaimed Northern Irish singer-songwriter, who's jazz-tinged folk-rock has won him comparisons to legends.

The Belfast Telegraph named Foy ..the most important solo musician to emerge from Northern Ireland since Van Morrison' and debut album 'Hope" received glowing reviews from publications as diverse as Uncut, Maverick, The Sunday Times, The Sun, The Daily Mirror and The Daily Mail among many others.
After completing a successful tour of the UK and Ireland including a crowd wowing performance at iTunes Live Sessions (with KT Tuntsall, Billy Bragg and Leo Abrahams) at the legendary AIR Studios, the real -life 'son of a preacher man' has just returned from the US where he performed at The Craic Music & Film Festival in NYC, Nashville and Texas for SXSW.

Future Cut (Lilly Allen, Dizzy Rascal, Kelis etc) co-produced and mixed ..Shed A Little Light', now receiving plays on both Radio 2 (Jonathan Ross, Gideon Coe) and Radio 1.
..Be With Me', produced by David Holmes, carries Holmes' trademark beats set against a jazzy, cinematic, southern gothic ambience studded with electronic swashes and synths.
A very special artist, a talented storyteller, a raw and impassioned performer with an eclectic package of beautifully crafted songs.

Iain Archer

As a solo artist of great depth and resonance, Iain Archer continues to reinvent the singer-songwriter genre.
Mojo's assessment is 'evocative, windswept, romantic' and Uncut magazine calls his music 'unassuming, but gripping'.
This Northern Irish singer toured in support to John Martyn and Nils Lofgren, and won an Ivor Novello award when he was with Snow Patrol for co-writing the award-winning Run, which appears on their 2003 album Final Straw.

Latest album To The Pine Roots is out now and we are very lucky to have this rising talent come along on tour with Foy - get tickets now while you still can!
