Last night - Tavaris Jackson - 12 for 15, 110.6 passer rating Favre - 1 for 4 39.6, passer rating
I have been a Vikings fan most of my life, my dad has always been a Vikings fan which pretty much made me a Vikings fan. So I have weathered the Vikings through never winning a Superbowl, choking in so many 4th quarters I've lost count and numerous other embarassing football moments. I have a soft spot for the Cardinals because Luke is a Cardinals fan, and I live in Arizona - but I have stuck by my Vikes through all sorts of crap, then Favre shows up.
I had a lot of respect for Favre as a Packer, he seemed to personify the good things about football - integrity, loyalty, teamwork. Sure, today's NFL has for the most part become a corporation, void of the old school loyalty that you'd see back in the day - its all about contracts and money - but, the beauty of the game is still found in rivalries, hard hits, the joy of winning and the agony of defeat. Favre has completely destroyed any amount of respect I ever had for the guy, and every time I hear his name it just makes me want to elbow the guy in the face.
Favre has toyed with the media, the NFL, and players and front office guys at various organizations. He has seemingly turrned into some sort of self-proclaimed rock star, acting in polar opposition to the character traits of a true football player. But Favre is a Packer, the archnemesis of my team, so he can be a douche all day but what do I care?
Until I experienced the overwhelming disappointment in my Vikings, I didnt care. The front office and coaching staff of the Vikings allowing Favre to call the shots, not meeting deadlines, and risking the long term ability of the Vikings to win astounds me. Tavaris Jackson needs time, he needs the support of his team, of his coaches. Even without all that - while Vikings staff dances around like court jesters for Favre's amusement -Tavaris STILL out performs Favrie. Favre is past his prime, now he's just a name on a jersey and an ego that prevents him from seeing he'd be doing himself (and football for that matter) a generous favor by staying retired.
The numbers from last night's game say enough, regardless of the fact Favre only played one quarter, its a perfect demonstration of what I'm saying. Tavaris outperformed Favre. Favre should NOT be 'the' guy. He's past that. Sit his egomaniacal butt on the bench, and make that bench anywhere but Minnesota. Then Luke read me an article explaining that Vikings FANS gave Favre a standing ovation, then booed Tavaris Jackson when he took the field?! What the hell?! Tavaris is a Viking, has not created a media circus that distracts from the focus on the team on getting ready for the season, and countless other 'better than Favre' actions. Has anyone stopped to think that if the Vikings actually WON a superbowl with Favre, Packers fans (for all eternity) will say that sure the Vikings won, but needed a Packer to do it. Screw that. I'd rather have the worst season in Vikings history than win a Superbowl with a PACKER - that self-serving traitor.
The rivaly between the Packers and Vikings in the NFL is one of the most noteworthy in all of the NFL. The history of the game and the rivalry warrants pause when celebrating the Viking's addition of Favre. The integrity of the franchise has been compromised, the hearts of the 'fans' booing their quarterback is disgusting, and a Packer in a Vikings jersey could likely make the universe implode.
I am torn - I am disgusted by what the Vikings organization has done in signing Favre. I am disgusted that Vikings fans have not held their ground against a Packer entering their house. It makes the Vikings look like spineless, needy, incompetent children that will sacrifice anything, including their integrity, to do what - win some games? We did that last year - So, what then, the Superbowl? With a Packer? No thanks. Looks like I'll be becoming a Cardinals fan...

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes
Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?
Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good. While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

Geezuss Christ!! Two days later and I'm still feeling the aftermath from the show Saturday with NSK at Shaynas -- but I cant think of a show where we had a better time! We haven't played with the North Side Kings since doing the New Times Music Showcase with them back in 2005, so it was a long time coming.
Kowalski (drummer, NSK) - played a song with us, and it not only gave me a chance to be able to breathe and sing at the same time, but getting to have him play with us was a priviledge - he's hands down the best drummer I've seen in town and I can't really think of anyone out of town that does anything he couldnt pull off, so that was awesome...
and Luke - not only the resident rythym guitar badass in NSK, but coincidentally also my boyfriend - played a tune with us as well and getting to have him on stage playing a song with us made my night. It can be a little intimidating having a boyfriend with talent like he does - if I wouldve screwed up the song I wouldve felt like a complete moron...no pressure at all!
NSK's set was phenomenal - it was awesome to get to see them on a stage where they werent separated from the crowd - rocked the house indeed...
Got to see a lot of people I hadnt seen in a while, and it was just overall the perfect vibe for a great show - I'm hurting like hell now, but for a show like that it was well worth it!!...
Thanks again to everyone that came out to support us - its appreciated as always :)

may turn this into a very girly mellow song....i know, im going to ruin my tough punk girl reputation...hahahaha
Behind the shell that protects me Inside there will always be A little girl alone and in the dark Reaching out from inside me Trying to be who you wanted me to be But I always seemed to somehow miss the mark
Always tried to turn all the bad around Well I never wanted to ever let you down
The dried marks from the tears you cried I can still see the sadness in your eyes As if all of your efforts were in vain But getting past the weight of why Forgetting all the futile fights And seeing it was your love I tried to gain
Always tried to turn all the bad around Well I never wanted to ever let you down
All the things I put you through By what I said and what I'd do I'd take it all and then some back away Way back then I wish I knew Our years together would be so few So I would not have had to miss a day
Well I always tried to turn the bad around Well I never wanted to ever let you down
And now when you really look at me Still hope that you will never see A little girl alone and in the dark All the things I tried to be Just wanted what was in front of me But I always somehow seem to miss the mark
And I'll always try to turn the bad around And I never want to ever let you down

Time and chance create destiny Or another opportunity erased What at once was not but now could be Another time another place
Above the strength of circumstance Strangers lost in passing cars When parts intersect by chance Alignment of the passing stars

I seem to go through phases with songwriting - sometimes I can go for weeks without any valuable ideas at all, and other times it seems nearly constant, to the point where it keeps me up at night with words and melodies swarming in my mind - waking up to constant thought.
While I loooooove the heavy shit - metal, punk, hardcore - I also have the side of me that has such an affinity for blues, jazz - Bille Holiday, Ertha Kitt....whats difficult about that is finding a place lyrically for some things in my own band, I think its important for any musician to realize that a good idea may still be meaningful but not necessarily fitting for a particular project. The past few days Ive probably written three or four songs worth of phrases, a chorus here a verse there - but it seems to have a different tone than things I've written before. I like pursuing this different side of things - writing songs like "Take A Number", "Boys and Booze" and "Punk Rock Heaven" are certainly something I enjoy - but lately lyrically I've been more soft, contemplative - maybe Im getting old, maybe its a consequence of circumstance, or some combination of many things - but nonetheless im curious how they'll manifest musically.
I think for now I may post them here in my blogs as a way to clear my mind - getting something written down has always seemed to help release things from my head.

So I found myself with a copy of North Side King's upcoming release, Suburban Royalty, and man....talk about just a straight up SICK record! I've been an NSK fan for quite some time, and after Organizing Our Neighborhood, I would've been happy just to hear something as equally good - but I gotta say Danny and the boys have outdone themselves this time...
With the addition of Jason Kawalski (not sure if I spelled that right), NSK has taken on just a deafening roar of hardcore making a lot of the genre sound like child's play. Kawolski (I'll just spell it different everytime, one of them will have to be right...hahaha) tears some shit up in a way that makes me sit back with goosebumps and enjoy the ride....its so sick its disgusting...as always its pissed, heavy as shit and still manages to be humorous....the drumming on this record really sets it apart from past NSK endeavors and being a drummer, makes me sit there with my jaw on the floor....drumming perfection.....not sure when the release date is going to be, but you NEED this CD!

The Dames recently received an endorsement from Coffin Case (!!!)(www.coffincase.com) - and I knew they had a case for drum hardware, but until I saw it, I had no idea it was so f-ing cool!! I got my case on Thursday and holy shit it rules!!!!!
Everybody knows they make awesome guitar/bass cases, but everybody knows drummers (and their gear) are the most important! HAHAHA (Yes, Im aware that only drummers will find that amusing...)
This hardware case is insane! I put my hardware in it (and my throne, and I didnt separate the seat from the legs! ) and there's STILL enough room in there for all kinds of shit - its ridiculous! Unlike so many cases I've seen, this case not only looks badass, it has incredibly sturdy hardware and is built like a tank - (And thank f-ing god for wheels - hardware is heavy!) Im pretty sure I could throw it out the back of the truck and nothing would happen to the case or the hardware inside; Im feeling a drunken experiment coming on involving a bass player in my case! - LOL -
I need to get some batteries for my camera so I can get some pics of this thing and post them - !! woo hoo!
;)

HOLY F-ING CHRIST!! -- I went to MASTODON last night and it was absolutely fucking amazing!!
I first heard about Mastodon from a friend of mine and it wasnt until another one of my friends was so sure i would like them that I finally took a listen. I finally did - and man, "Leviathan", their latest release, has got to be one of the best records I've heard in years.
Typically, I do like metal but can't listen to it for hours on end like I could a good punk record because oftentimes it seems like some metal bands play something because they CAN, not because it necessarily has any striking dynamic, hooks or anything other than sheer technical ability. Mastodon is definitely an exception to that - their technical playing ability is matched only by their ability to write good fucking songs - the two are not the same!! The drummer obviously has the ability to play like a fiend, but has an incredible ear for when to throw in technical stuff versus playing straight and solid for the overall better effect in the song. All of them do - phenomenal dynamic and flow - I could go on and on (really).
So last night I had the privledge to finally catch these guys live -- there's always that curiosity of whether or not you'll be disappointed hearing a band live for the first time after hearing their CD - well, the verdict is in - Its the next day and I still cant believe what I saw --
Before getting into the local scene, I would go to national shows all the time - but over the past 7 years or so, I've gravitated more towards local bands because it just seemed there was some level of genuine energy missing from national acts - maybe because of the toll of being on the road, maybe its the level of intimacy at larger venues, maybe a combination of several factors - who knows - but my point is that its been a lonnnnnng time since I was impressed by a national act's live show...
So last night - a TUESDAY for hell's sake (I dont go out during the week because I have to get up so damned early!) - I show up at the Clubhouse feeling like a 14 year old girl, giddy and excited to see this band I haven't been able to stop listening to for about a month straight now....MASTODON took the stage and I was mesmerized - it was BETTER than the recording I didn't think they could top and they owned that place. You'd never know these guys had played night after night on the road - they came on stage like a hurricane with just straight up fierce energy and ability - and FUCK it was GREAT!! There were two young kids up front, they must have been around 15 or so, and they were obviously big Mastodon fans and it was like a breath of fresh air to see these guys making it a point to acknowledge these kids that love their music. The level of talent in every member of the band was astonishing! I already mentioned the drummer - dear god I dont even know what to say about the guy he's just SICK; guitars, bass - you name it, all fucking sick!!!
I hear they're coming back in August - and I'll be counting down the days to that show! If you haven't heard Mastodon and you dig metal, you NEED this band in your collection.!!!
