Well, another year, another Naked Beggars release with yet another line-up. Jeff LaBar, Kristine and Shawn Hughes have all left the building and in came Lisa Rav on drums as a replacement for mister Hughes. These changes have turned the band into a foursome again: 2 girls & 2 boys. ABBA anyone?

I've been following this band's career from the beginning (Eric promised me some skimpy pictures of his wife Inga a while back…but so far nothing of the sort has come my way. So if you're reading this mister Brittingham...I'm still very interested) and while the band struggled for direction in the beginning it seems they might have found their definite strut this time around.

The sound on "XXX" is some very southern flavored classic rock and the fact that the band's hometown is Nashville might have something to do with that. But that suits me just fine as this latest effort could turn out to be their best yet.

The band is totally at ease; the energy and sonic content of the album captures those of their live set & when compared to previous offerings the whole affair is much more mature but still comes with the usual sassy lyrics.

A majorly rockin' affair, my friends, just listen to co-founder Kris Casamento rip & tear through most of the songs and you will agree that we're dealing here with a yet undiscovered & underestimated talent. But that could change soon if the album starts shifting the kind of numbers it deserves.

Also in the songwriting department there's a lot of progression. Songs as 'Can't Breathe' & 'What Have I Done Now' are just readymade for college radio. The hardrock variety, of course. Throw in a couple of intimate ballads ('Oh Daddy' & 'The One') and the first winner of 2008 is a fact! (KVK)

I'm presuming your like your rock bluesy. If not, please move along now, because what you're getting here is another rock solid bluesy rock n roll album from the Naked Beggars.

XXX, the followup to 2006's Spit It Out, is the bands first recorded output since parting ways with Jeff LaBar, and if anyone was worried that it would change the output of the band, they can now rest easy. The blues is most certainly still kicking ass. Just like with their last album, musically, as you would expect from anything that Cinderella's Eric Brittingham is involved in, is top notch, and if anything better than on Spit It Out, and Inga has certainly improved vocally, and she was great in the first place.

The main difference here on XXX though, is the band have moved away from the more sleazy rock n roll sound that they had going on last time out, and moved both feet forward into a straight up blues rock sound. That has upsides and downsides. The upsides is that they're very good at what they do, and that shows. The downside is that something just feels likes it's lacking, the sassiness for lack of a better word from tracks like Spit It Out just isn't here.

I leave it to you to balance up whether that's a good or bad thing of course. Personally, I think this is rock solid, and the band are going from strength to strength, albeit in a slightly altered direction.

Since we're really talking genre rock and roll in this edition of Indie Noise, it only seems right to include Southern rock, blues, classic rockers Naked Beggars.

We're not sure what Naked Beggars are begging for exactly, but we know its not a desperate plea for fans. Their music simply drives fans to them with little effort. Take a stroll over to their Myspace page and prove it to yourself.

We've been listening to Naked Beggars since the middle of this last summer and we love them. We can't exactly put a finger on what it is about Naked Beggars that makes them unique but we know they are. We've never heard anything like Naked Beggars' tunes before and we're wondering why their still hiding out in the land of independent labels. Sure, the folks at SMA Records (an independent label) has recognized the talent of this quartet, but we're quite frankly shocked that none of the big league-ers have grabbed onto Naked Beggars. Allow us to break it down for you:

Kris Casamento plays all the guitars. Electric, acoustic, lead and rhyhtm. And yet its a big sound. He runs all over the tracks with perfect tone and great style. This is one guitarist who knows his fretboard and is not afraid to show it. But that doesn't mean he breaks into a shredfest every chance he gets. No, no. Casamento manages to stand out while just being part of the mix. No easy task and yet heartily accomplished. Dig his solo on "Can't Breathe." It sounds as if it was just ripped from a classic rock radio station but I guarantee, you've never heard a song like a Naked Beggars' song before.

Then add Eric Brittingham's perfectly timed bass lines. Nothing flashy but wihout Eric's groove we're certain that Naked Beggars would be a little more naked. The songs are all tight and we credit that to the teamwork of Brittingham and his rhyhtm section counterpart, Lisa Rav who pulls it together with drums. Take a listen to "Get it On," "Spit it Out," and "Go Where You're Wanted" and you'll see how important the rhyhtm section is to this band. We've been wondering what would happen if either Rav or Brittingham were not part of the Naked Beggars lineup and we've decided that their songs would be far less driving and well, grooving. Yes, there is a groove to these songs like none we've heard in recent years.

Naked Beggars has two CDs right now, "Spit it Out" which you should have gone looking for immediately after hearing their title track, and "XXX" which was released yesterday, Jan. 1, 2008. What a great way to start the new year.
