Final artist announcement makes 20th
Bluesfest a music lover’s paradise

Now over 100 artists with 200+ performances on 6 stages over 5 days!
Easter Long Weekend 9th – 13th April 2009, Byron Bay

March 2009 – It’s shaping up to be a simply massive year for Bluesfest – quite fittingly for the icon event’s 20th birthday bash taking place over the Easter long weekend just 5 weeks away.

And demonstrating Bluesfest’s commitment to unbeatable value for money for the world’s finest entertainment, today’s final artist announcement takes the tally to more than 100 artists with 200+ performances, on 6 stages, over 5 days!

The new list of headliners now includes:
BEN HARPER and RELENTLESS7, John Butler Trio, Missy Higgins, Jason Mraz, Lucinda Williams, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson, Xavier Rudd, Zappa Plays Zappa, Angelique Kidjo, Paul Kelly, Blind Boys Of Alabama, Drive-By Truckers, Booker T and the DBTs, Eric Bibb , Augie March, Seasick Steve, Tinariwen, James Hunter, Ruthie Foster, Tim Finn, Toni Childs, Tony Joe White, Ayo, Blues Traveler and Fishbone.

The Daily Playing Schedule…
is also now up online – which means you can plan your whole weekend and festival in minute detail. For a full list of artists playing and to see the daily schedule – visit www.bluesfest.com.au.

New artists announced today include recent Grammy award winning Zydeco master Terrance Simien, the toast of the last Tamworth music awards Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson, well-known Kiwi icon of sheer songwriting quality Tim Finn, ska-punk-funk legends Fishbone (exclusive Bluesfest performance), singer / guitarist from the righteously popular Black Keys, Dan Auerbach, and one-man rhythm and groove band, and absolute hit of the recent Woodford festival, That 1 Guy.

Festival director Peter Noble said, “We’re all thrilled with how strong our lineup is for our 20th anniversary. There’s such a depth of talent and a huge cross section of blues and roots genres – absolute legends, standard-bearers, up and coming stars, chart-toppers, underground trail-blazers. For me, I can’t wait for Easter so I can enjoy all these great artists and just soak it up.”

Exclusive Ben Harper and other performances
Remember, Ben Harper will make an exclusive Australian appearance at Bluesfest with two special performances to debut his new band billed as BEN HARPER and RELENTLESS7. Bluesfest 2009 will also host the only concert performances on Australia’s East Coast for Michael Franti & Spearhead, John Butler Trio, Missy Higgins and Fishbone.

2 new stages for Bluesfest 2009!
Bluesfest 2009 introduces a brand new Cabaret stage featuring international and local artists including – Mic Conway’s National Junk Band, Mojo JuJu & The Snake Oil Merchants, Opposable Thumbs, Old Spice Boys, Pugsley Buzzard, Kush Cabaret and a further assorted motley crew of jugglers, fire eaters and twirlers, ferals and real live hippies!

Bluesfest also introduces in 2009 the new InDIG stage following a partnership investment from Events NSW. The InDIG stage showcases the country’s Australian and Southern Pacific Rim Indigenous heritage, and will include performances by Saltwater Band, Christine Anu, Archie Roach & Ruby Hunter, Dan Sultan, Te Vaka, Yilila, Tribe of Jubal, Buddy Knox Blues Band, Stiff Gins, Ngaiire, Marlene Cummins, Tommee, Rode Worx, Matty Devitt Band, and Paul Patten.

Bluesfest 2009 also presents a number of exciting newer artists under the banner of Catch A Rising Star including Grace Woodroofe and Tom Freund (both chosen by Ben Harper), Carney, The Haciendas, Mishka, State Radio, Carney, Paul Greene and The Inspector Cluzo. This collection continues the tradition of introducing stars of the future to Bluesfest audiences (think Ben Harper, Jack Johnson John Butler Jason Mraz, The Cat Empire, Kasey Chambers), so for festival goers, “you can say you saw them when!”

Ben Harper & John Butler guest program at Bluesfest!
And if that’s not enough, in a first for Bluesfest, as well as any other music festival in Australia, two of its major 2009 acts will help program up to seven bands that play prior to their own headlining set on the festival main stage, the Mojo Stage.

Guest programmed by Ben Harper to play prior to BEN HARPER and RELENTLESS7 on Saturday April 11, 2009: Grace Woodroofe, Tom Freund, Tinariwen, and AYO.

Guest programmed by John Butler to play prior to John Butler Trio on Sunday April 12, 2009: Paul Kelly, Blue King Brown, Saltwater Band featuring Geoffrey Gurrumul, State Radio, Jeff Lang, Ngaiire, and Nicky Bomba.

The 2009 festival digs right back to its roots with one of the best pure 'blues' line-ups ever seen in the Bay.  This will feature six top class blues groups from the far flung corners of New Zealand and will top off with a rocking performance by the blues legend, Midge Marsden.

The line-up in 2009 is:

2.00pm to 2.50pm;  King Leo & the Growling Dogs (Dunedin)
A seasoned blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player, Leo LaDell (King Leo) backed blues luminaries such as Bo Diddley, Pinetop Perkins and Big Bill Morganfield, (Muddy Waters son) in the US while fronting his own blues band for 15 years.  With his talent & showmanship, King Leo always connects with the audience.  He is consistently delivers soulful, compelling performanced with his dynamic rhythm sectionm the Growling Dogs

3.00pm to 4.00pm;  The Gary Harvey Band (Auckland)
There maybe a whole lot of different styles of music that go to make up what the band is all about. But if you really have to nail it down, the musical journey which they follow takes us from the Southern States of America through to Liverpool England. In particular one place really lies at the heart of it all, and that's the lonestar state of Texas. Bands and musicians from Stevie Ray Vaughan the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Joe Ely through to Doyle Bramhall II and Joe Bonamassa.

4.10pm to 5.15pm;  The Best of British Blues Show (Hamilton)
The Best of British Blues should not be missed. Ian mccook & his six piece band covers all the great material from Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Gary Moore, Peter Green, Savoy Brown, & much more

5.15pm to 5.30pm;  Fancy Dress Prize  Presentation
Come along in fancy dress and you could win hundreds of BBQ Bucks for you and your mates.  So why not dress up for the occasion and have a really great time

5.30pm to 6.30pm;  King Leo & the Growling Dogs (Dunedin)
After a warm-up performance earlier it is time to grab a fine ale, a bite to eat and kick back in front of the stage to enjoy this class performance

6.40pm to 7.40pm;  The Katy Soljak Band (Waihike Island)
With a sound described as 'a smoky blend of Melissa Etheridge and Bessie Smith', songwriter; Katy Soljak combines 'blues- folk- jazz- poetry-truth', in a style that reflects her life as a woman in the world with songs that strike a chord with new and old Bohemiens. Katy returned from a 10 year musical stint in Los Angeles working with musicians like Steven Hodges (Tom Waits) and Paul Barrere from Little Feat. She sang back ups for Jack Brewer Band (Saccharine Trust SST) and recorded on  Harsh World SST. Her own band KATY SOLJAK regularly played the clubs on Sunset Boulevard, art galleries and Cafes in Los Angeles and Long Beach, Californina. Katy is backed by Nick Stevens on keys, Jonnie B on lean, Mara T.K on bass and Manuel Kahura on drums.

7.50pm to 8.50pm;  The Blues Buffet (Wanganui)
A group of seasoned blues performers, members of The Blues Buffet and lived and breathed music since the mid 1960's.  Their passion for blues spans not only the years but a vast number of groups and smoky bars through New Zealand and Australia.  Be asured that these chaps know how to turn it on

9.00pm to 10.20pm;  Midge Marsden and the Midge Marsden Band (Raglan)
What more can we say, Midge Marsden's career is unparalleled in New Zealand. His professional career spans almost 50 years. He has played thousands of concerts to thousands of fans and has performed with a list of artists that reads like a definitive whose who of NZ music luminaries. Named NZ entertainer of the year in 1990, his many recordings include the critically acclaimed 'Burning Rain', which achieved gold status. More recently he has released albums with The Rodger Fox Big Band, Bullfrog Rata, NZ Harmonica sessions and his latest semi acoustic album TRAVEL 'N TIME. Midge has been fortunate to ha ve toured internationally and has toured the USA four times focusing mainly on the southern states Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. It was during one of these tours that Midge studied at the university of Mississippi where he graduated with a diploma in southern studies. Midge has played such famous venues as Ronnie Scott's in London, Tipitinas in New Orleans, Antones in Austin and Beale St in Memphis. Midge recently was awarded the honour of New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to New Zealand music. Shortly after he was also awarded an honorary Bachelor of Arts from the Waikato Polytechnic. Midge remains New Zealand's pre-eminent rhythm and blues artist. His combination of excellent musicians and unstoppable energy combine to guarantee a great show every time.
