..Coffee Linked to Lower Dementia Risk

..

..
Published: January 23, 2009

Drinking coffee may do more than just keep you awake. A new study suggests an intriguing potential link to mental health later in life, as well. A
team of Swedish and Danish researchers tracked coffee consumption in a
group of 1,409 middle-age men and women for an average of 21 years.
During that time, 61 participants developed dementia, 48 with Alzheimer’s disease. After controlling for numerous socioeconomic and health factors, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure,
the scientists found that the subjects who had reported drinking three
to five cups of coffee daily were 65 percent less likely to have
developed dementia, compared with those who drank two cups or less.
People who drank more than five cups a day also were at reduced risk of
dementia, the researchers said, but there were not enough people in
this group to draw statistically significant conclusions. Dr.
Miia Kivipelto, an associate professor of neurology at the Karolinska
Institute in Stockholm and lead author of the study, does not as yet
advocate drinking coffee as a preventive health measure. “This is an
observational study,” she said. “We have no evidence that for people
who are not drinking coffee, taking up drinking will have a protective
effect.” Dr. Kivipelto and her colleagues suggest several
possibilities for why coffee might reduce the risk of dementia later in
life. First, earlier studies have linked coffee consumption with a
decreased risk of type 2 diabetes,
which in turn has been associated with a greater risk of dementia. In
animal studies, caffeine has been shown to reduce the formation of
amyloid plaques in the brain, one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s
disease. Finally, coffee may have an antioxidant effect in the
bloodstream, reducing vascular risk factors for dementia.Dr. Kivipelto noted that previous studies have shown that coffee drinking may also be linked to a reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease. The
new study, published this month in The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease,
is unusual in that more than 70 percent of the original group of 2,000
people randomly selected for tracking were available for re-examination
21 years later. The dietary information had been collected at the
beginning of the study, which reduced the possibility of errors
introduced by people inaccurately recalling their consumption. Still,
the authors acknowledge that any self-reported data is subject to
inaccuracies.

There are way too many gorgeous things about the mighty G to let the nasty actions of idiots color our world. So here are some of the things I love:
The sound of people playing games, talking, that murmur of activity and friendship.
Watching you grow up, watching you grow.
Making something tasty and people eating/drinking it, and it making them happy.
Chatting with Johnny.
The light in the Globe, the warm light, that peaceful light.
A good music night.
Weaving everyone together.
Eggplant Parmesan wrap, just off the grill. OMG, do I love that.
People discovering, and falling in love, with the Globe.
How funny (talking intentionally right now) our customers are.
And how smart,
and interested in the world.
and talented.
Hearing a new band.
the complete, utter, sweet satisfaction of cleaning off my desk.
You!

It is wearing me out. Why do people steal so much of our stuff? The mirror from the Ladies Room? Our lights from out back?
The big stuff I can get through.  The little stuff makes me want to give up.

There's been a phrase coined by the trend spotters: Latte Recession
That morning coffee of yours is ruining the economy...

Every time I open the paper, the brilliant advice on saving money is: stop buying lattes. You can save a brazillion dollars if you make your latte at home, start drinking tea, give up caffiene, drink good ol' Joe, etc.

Yep, that is true. But there are a few better ways to save that $4 you spend on your morning (or evening coffee). Pay your credit cards on time is the number one. Pay all your bills on time (and believe me, I know this isn't always easy).  How much do late fees and interest add up to?

Stop picking on the coffee shops!

Coming to your locally owned business, whether it is a coffee shop, clothing store, art supply store, hardware, what ever! keeps more money in the local economy. AMOEBA (a small/local business association) estimates that only 30 % of money collected by chain stores stay in the community, as opposed to upwards of 65% collected by the locals.  That local money pays for local jobs, local roads, local schools, you get it.

You can of course cut back your lattes to regular coffee.  As a coffee shop owner, I naturally would rather see you do that than disappear from our couches. Are the cappuccinos the symbols of American and Western self indulgences like the Hummer?  The 26$ cocktails? Spending 200$ on a pair of jeans?

Journalists, I implore you.  Come up with one new way of advising people to save a little flow. Leave my Sumatrian Costa Rican French Roast alone.

Vicki Santa died this morning.
James's mother died on Friday.
Susan's dog died last week.

This is the way that it goes, people fly up and then fall down.  They're part of our days much as streets and trees and books and cars, in that they are daily and solid.  Then, they are more like music, and heart ache, and whispers.

Thanksgiving is forever when my mom died; Christmas is forever when my Grandma died. No calendar will ever change that. This year though, the
remembrance of Mom was more like music than heartache.

Thank you Vicki, for the constant kindness and care you brought to every thing you did.  Thank you Donna, for your fierce intelligence and lively battle.

Thank you Claire, and Anna, for the oceans of love, and so much more.

LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL FOR TREASURY AUTHORITY

TO PURCHASE MORTGAGE-RELATED ASSETS

Section 1. Short Title.

This Act may be cited as ____________________.

Sec. 2. Purchases of Mortgage-Related Assets.

(a) Authority to Purchase.--The Secretary is authorized to purchase, and to make and fund commitments to purchase, on such terms and conditions as determined by the Secretary, mortgage-related assets from any financial institution having its headquarters in the United States.

(b) Necessary Actions.--The Secretary is authorized to take such actions as the Secretary deems necessary to carry out the authorities in this Act, including, without limitation:

(1) appointing such employees as may be required to carry out the authorities in this Act and defining their duties;

(2) entering into contracts, including contracts for services authorized by section 3109 of title 5, United States Code, without regard to any other provision of law regarding public contracts;

(which means that these contract employees don't have to answer to any existing or future laws regarding their service)

(3) designating financial institutions as financial agents of the Government, and they shall perform all such reasonable duties related to this Act as financial agents of the Government as may be required of them;

(no provision banning the same institutions involved in causing the debacle from being hired to 'fix' the debacle)

(4) establishing vehicles that are authorized, subject to supervision by the Secretary, to purchase mortgage-related assets and issue obligations; and

(5) issuing such regulations and other guidance as may be necessary or appropriate to define terms or carry out the authorities of this Act.

Sec. 3. Considerations.

In exercising the authorities granted in this Act, the Secretary shall take into consideration means for--

(1) providing stability or preventing disruption to the financial markets or banking system; and

(2) protecting the taxpayer.

(no mention of gaining equity in the bailed out companies)

Sec. 4. Reports to Congress.

Within three months of the first exercise of the authority granted in section 2(a), and semiannually thereafter, the Secretary shall report to the Committees on the Budget, Financial Services, and Ways and Means of the House of Representatives and the Committees on the Budget, Finance, and Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs of the Senate with respect to the authorities exercised under this Act and the considerations required by section 3.

Sec. 5. Rights; Management; Sale of Mortgage-Related Assets.

(a) Exercise of Rights.--The Secretary may, at any time, exercise any rights received in connection with mortgage-related assets purchased under this Act.

(b) Management of Mortgage-Related Assets.--The Secretary shall have authority to manage mortgage-related assets purchased under this Act, including revenues and portfolio risks therefrom.

(c) Sale of Mortgage-Related Assets.--The Secretary may, at any time, upon terms and conditions and at prices determined by the Secretary, sell, or enter into securities loans, repurchase transactions or other financial transactions in regard to, any mortgage-related asset purchased under this Act.

(d) Application of Sunset to Mortgage-Related Assets.--The authority of the Secretary to hold any mortgage-related asset purchased under this Act before the termination date in section 9, or to purchase or fund the purchase of a mortgage-related asset under a commitment entered into before the termination date in section 9, is not subject to the provisions of section 9.

Sec. 6. Maximum Amount of Authorized Purchases.

The Secretary's authority to purchase mortgage-related assets under this Act shall be limited to $700,000,000,000 outstanding at any one time

Sec. 7. Funding.

For the purpose of the authorities granted in this Act, and for the costs of administering those authorities, the Secretary may use the proceeds of the sale of any securities issued under chapter 31 of title 31, United States Code, and the purposes for which securities may be issued under chapter 31 of title 31, United States Code, are extended to include actions authorized by this Act, including the payment of administrative expenses. Any funds expended for actions authorized by this Act, including the payment of administrative expenses, shall be deemed appropriated at the time of such expenditure.

(translate to: we can borrow more money from China!)

Sec. 8. Review.

Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency.

(possibly the most egregious, dangerous declaration: no entity at any time can oversee anything or any part of the actions or decisions made. no one. full authority, no responsibility)

Sec. 9. Termination of Authority.

The authorities under this Act, with the exception of authorities granted in sections 2(b)(5), 5 and 7, shall terminate two years from the date of enactment of this Act.

Sec. 10. Increase in Statutory Limit on the Public Debt.

Subsection (b) of section 3101 of title 31, United States Code, is amended by striking out the dollar limitation contained in such subsection and inserting in lieu thereof $11,315,000,000,000.

(I don't even know how to say that number!)

Sec. 11. Credit Reform.

The costs of purchases of mortgage-related assets made under section 2(a) of this Act shall be determined as provided under the Federal Credit Reform Act of 1990, as applicable.

Sec. 12. Definitions.

For purposes of this section, the following definitions shall apply:

(1) Mortgage-Related Assets.--The term "mortgage-related assets" means residential or commercial mortgages and any securities, obligations, or other instruments that are based on or related to such mortgages, that in each case was originated or issued on or before September 17, 2008.

(2) Secretary.--The term "Secretary" means the Secretary of the Treasury.

(3) United States.--The term "United States" means the States, territories, and possessions of the United States and the District of Columbia

It has been quite some time since I have been on a stage (once a few years ago narrating a dance history, otherwise, not since college) and there probably is good reason for that. Nonetheless, I'm in the Vagina Monologues at American Stage Theater tonight at 7 and October 9 at 10:30. Sadly, I will not be having an orgasm on stage.  I did push a little for it! but no go.

yipes!
