2007

Halloween! 10/31/2007 - The Skylark

Okay, this show was insane! Local solo acts and bands vied for prizes and recognition by masquerading as other solo acts or bands. Which in this case meant CHRIS MESS as CHEAP TRICK OR TREAT. The place was packed to the gills and we laid down that Cheap Trick wholesale, son! Surrender, He's A Whore, and Southern Girls. The judges panel: Matt Brown of Nadamucho.com, Jessie SK of owner/booking agent of Skylark.

Thursday, 10/18/2007 - The Central, with the refreshingly insane 13th Grade.

Thursday, 10/4/2007 - The Skylark, with the marvelously hard rocking Megasapien and Key Note Speaker.

Thursday, 5/31/2007 - The Rendezvous Jewelbox Theater, with H is for Hellgate. A STIFF LICKS show, an event for Seattle's True Independent Film Festival (STIFF). Performance went down while the film "Repo Man" ran in back of us.

Monday, 2/12/2007 - The Funhouse, with Thankless Dogs and DJ Deutschermeister (AKA Herbie/Roman from The Greatest Hits).

Thursday, 2/1/2007 - Cafe Venus and the Mars Bar, a NadaMucho.com show with Supernals and The Diets

Friday, 1/12/2007 - The Skylark (West Seattle), with Never Quiet, Never Still and Seeking Sanity

Halloween Weds. Oct. 31 at The Skylark nightclub in Seattle was "Come as You Aren't Night". The "Come as You Aren't" theme meant 10 local and normally original rock bands, such as, well, this one, masqueraded as other famous bands. Each band did a handful of songs by their chosen act. Chris Mess went as the mighty Cheap Trick. Actually, since it was Halloween, we were Cheap Trick or Treat.

The lineup! Chris Mess as Cheap Trick or Treat on around 10:15. As you will see from these photos (expertly shot by Matt Brown of NadaMucho.com), it was completely insane!

Rockford, IL's finest, Cheap Trick. Clockwise from top left: Bun E. Carlos [drums], Rick Nielsen [guitar], Tom Petersson [bass], Robin Zander [lead singer/guitar]:

The crowd. Cheap Trick or Treat are about to go on (me in blonde as Robin Zander)….

On stage doing "Surrender". Left to right, Steve/Tom Petersson, Chris/Robin Zander, Andy/Bun E. Carlos. Check out that sexy black velvet blazer. Wowza.

Screaming through the end of "Surrender"

Power chords on "Southern Girls"…

Andy as Bun E. Carlos

Steve as Tom Petersson

Everyone knows Cheap Trick's secret weapon is Rick Nielsen, the lead guitarist. Since we are a 3-piece band, naturally I used my cardboard cutout of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, clamped Rick's head on it, and staged it to the left of me as Mr. Nielsen:

View of us on stage from the packed house, playing "He's A Whore"…"Rick" is one tall bloke…

…another crowd shot, just before we went on…

Tabloid Britney Spears awarded the prize to the winning band, a "Golden Cowbell".

Just to get an idea of some of the other bands, Speedmop came as Northwest legends "The Sonics" only with an Elvis Impersonator (the bloated cheesburger 70's period) as the singer.

Laura of Blue Light Curtain, who chose NYC 70's band Velvet Underground. She made a smashing Nico. What a night! All the bands were amazing.

In the end, the Golden Cowbell went to the unstoppable Twisted Riot, featuring Lori from Hot Rollers as Kevin D. Dubrow-Snider! Rock and Roll, bitches.

Hey Seattle musicians - Check out those amazing live shots on my profile. Who did 'em? A talented, real life friend of mine named Cheluís. This guy's got a great eye for photo composition, angles, moments...add him, and hit him up if you're throwing a gig.
