Gravity Propulsion System Days Like Razors (Ascetic) No problems with cutting loose here. GPS shoves a lifetime of ideas into its songs and then chops them up into noisy, distorted bits. Loud as hell, unrepentantly obtuse and absolutely grating. My friends, this is what rock and roll is all about. I've loved these guys for ages, and this album made me cream my shorts. Play it loud and wait for your brain to explode. - Jon Worley Aiding and Abetting

Gravity Propulsion System "Days Like Razors" Ascetic Street: 03.11 Gravity Propulsion System = Sonic Youth + Mclusky + Velvet Underground Gravity Propulsion System takes equal parts psychedelia, post-punk and good ol' rock n' roll and throws them into a blender to create a challenging, fuzzed-out sound that can be at times noisy and at others, almost poppy. It's nice to see a band that is not trying to make music within the confines of any genre—oftentimes post-punk and its ilk are one-trick ponies. GPS, on the other hand, seems to be making music for the sake of making music. On "Floated," a trombone makes its way into the soundscape in the background, while in other tunes, straight balls-to-the-wall rock is on tap. The tunes that work best feature a juxtaposition of melody and fuzzed-out noise. Not in the start-stop-clean-then-messy way, but the I-can't-believe-this-is-melodic-because-all-other-signs-point-to-no way. GPS are going to rock. And they're going to rock however they see fit. –Peter Fryer slugmag.com

Hola! Just a heads up... We're playing a show and you're bored out of your skull so it all works out. Wed (tomorrow) August 27th @ The Conservatory 8911 N. Western We'll (GPS) be doing a one off side by side set w/ the good people of Anvil Salute as a prelude to what will probably be another amazing show by Houston Texas's Indian Jewelry. They played here last year and trust me, you're bummed you missed it. What to expect from the side by side set? About 45 minutes, 14 amps, 2 drum kits, some rock, some non-rock, some pedal antics, at least 2 beards, one kitchen sink, a cover of a semi-infamous New Zealand band and an electrical fire of some sort if my luck keeps going the same path it has been lately. We haven't done one of these in about 2 years so I'm really looking forward to it. Also if you haven't heard Indian Jewelry before they are another one of my favorite bands so I hope everyone can make it out. Check them out here: http://www. myspace. com/indianjewelry Cheers - la b http://www. myspace. com/indianjewelry http://www. myspace. com/gps http://www. myspace. com/anvilsalute Promotional video for Indian Jewelry record, Free Gold http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=NS_pj6KgBqs The music video for Indian Jewelry's "Temporary Famine Ship" http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=e6msswWFcPU Indian Jewelry perform in an abandoned mansion 3/17/07 http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=aw8sCvRDN_o Indian Jewelry Pawns Golden Freakouts (From Wired) By Scott Thill May 03, 2008 | 5:00:00 PM It's hard to categorize the throbbing dance psychedelia that Indian Jewelry concocts out of their Houston-based launch pad, but I suppose I just did. The tongue-in-cheek ensemble falls somewhere in the sonic spectrum between My Bloody Valentine, Gram Rabbit and Brian Jonestown Massacre, but one could argue they lie outside of those comfortable coordinates as well. You can decide for yourself by catching them on their current tour, or by listening in on their latest effort Free Gold, which drops May 20 from the very indie label We Are Free. Then again, you could also read the short but humorous exchange I conducted below with head jeweler Erika Thrasher on robots with filthy mouths and why the band shouldn't give away gold for free during a recession. That should do the trick. Wired: Your music has a throb behind it. Where does it come from? Indian Jewelry: FLE = Focused Libidinal Energy. A field of white light comprised of what are commonly known as orgones. I mean, what would you do? Wired: Indian Jewelry sounds like it makes lo-fi psychedelics in the garage. Indian Jewelry: That's a weird thing to say. Why did you say that? The garage be too hot and all our shit would get ruined fast. We do most of our work indoors in our Houston estate. But I can see how it sounds like a garage. That's rock and roll and it sounds like cars parked in a garage. Wired: What gear are you playing on, and who's doing what? Indian Jewelry: With regards to gear, we use only top-of-the-line gear derived from fire sales and insider arrangements with friends in loud places. Anything that makes sound will do. As far as roles, everyone is guilty. Wired: By the way, who's the sexy robot with the filthy mouth on your MySpace page promo? Indian Jewelry: That would be Audrey. She did the voiceover work for our promotional spots. She has a pleasant speaking voice and we tried to get her to talk nice, but she has her own thing going on. Like the old saying goes, you don't get the chicken without you get the cluck. Wired: Free Gold? Do you have any idea how much gold is going for in this recession? Keep it. Trust me. Indian Jewelry: We can afford to give it all away for free: gems, artisanal furniture, land, credit, gold, diamonds. Whatever we give away comes back covered in hand prints-- that's the wage of genius. When times get hard, we'll take what we need where we see it all piled up. There aren't police enough in the world to deter the undeserving poor once they fix their minds. The banks are just couches where our change ends up when it shakes loose. Shake up a bank, find your lost dollars. Wired: Speaking of lost dollars, what do you think about downloads? Indian Jewelry: Only a fool gets into music to make money. The rest of us do it in the hopes that Bono will appear in the documentary that will one day be made about our ups and downs. Wired: Seriously, you create some sick and interesting atmospheres. Where do you pull the ideas from? Indian Jewelry: We all have a long burning desire to make people sick in interesting ways. We think it looks neat. We like taquerias, contrarians, places with hot sauce, our dog. Let's Paint and Make Blended Drinks. And also books: William Gaddis, Dostoevsky, Bulgakov, Cortazar, Prokosch, Borges, Ezra Pound, Yeats, Emile Habiby, Tolstoy, Beckett, Flannery O' Connor. Wired: Give me one good reason why you should be in Texas. Indian Jewelry: Ireland is too cold. Texas is the new Seattle. OK, you win. Photo: Danny Kerschen

-SKX Days Like Razors review from Built on a Weak Spot Heading back into the noisier side of things…wait, make that much nosier…is the latest installment from the Oklahoma based trio Gravity Propulsion System. The new album Days Like Razors is their third through Ascetic Records, which was released this past March. For those not familiar with the band they've been around for roughly ten or so years putting out completely solid albums and EP's of recorded guitar/amp abuse of the best kind. Over that period of time they've also shared the stage with some other excellent noise rockers that have been featured here on the blog, such as Vaz, SWITCHhiTTER, Neptune, and Enemymine.
Days Like Razors falls right into line with the bands previous output, delivering thirty five more minutes of their filthy brand of fuzz filled rock. A good portion of this comes at a quick burst to the listener as the first seven tracks fly by in a pummeling thirteen minutes, a few of those being short little segues into the next punk fueled noise explosion. The inclusion of these just gives the album that much more of a disorienting feeling. Things come to a bit of a rest though with the track "The Travel Agent", which is a surprisingly melodic yet noisy affair that brings their notable post-punk influences to the forefront. While the band may appear to be quite the aggressive bunch on first listen, they've always managed to work in a bit of catchiness to their overall sound giving them an added bit of appeal. Days Like Razors is yet another excellent addition to the bands catalog.
For those looking to pick up Days Like Razors or any of the bands other albums for that matter, then head on over to Ascetic Records and pick it up. It's definitely recommended. - Jonathan

Current mood:Awesome
Ok, so it's been a couple of days or weeks (depending on how you personally choose to track time) since we got back from our West Coast adventure, but now that we're finally awaking from the cold medicine coma we've all been in, we just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came out and witnessed the coughing and sneezing in person. Regardless of police encounters, gas shortages, minor equipment fires, having the bird flu, 500 dollar an hour minor emergency clinics and accidental electrocution, we had a really amazing and semi-life changing time. Extra special thanks to Mitchell at Ballistic Missile for setting the whole thing up, Ascetic Records for being extra hot and always taking care of us, all of the sound engineers for being rad (especially Dana in Tucson), AOG for keeping us up all night, the Rimassa's for the awesome and much needed floor space in LA, Chango Malo for being a drunken blast and rocking in Vegas and to El Paso Hot Button for playing that Beach Boys song every night.
Hopefully we can do it all over again soon minus the fevers and the puking.
Cheers and thanks - The GPS

Reviews: Days Like Razors review from NONzine I am convinced that Gravity Propulsion System are the soundtrack to the apocalypse. Their new album Days Like Razors is what Mother Earth listens to when she orchestrates monsoons, earthquakes and tornadoes, what God will crank up on his godPod when he brings about the end and, given the technology, it is undoubtedly what the Vikings would have blasted from the stereo system in their boats as they pulled ashore anticipating a massacre. Loud, seemingly spontaneous chaos erupts from their music like sonic lava, melting everything in its path, especially musical conventions. Days Like Razors harbors a dangerous desire to make noise rock smart and eerily sophisticated. If ever a hardcore rock outfit understood the value of angular guitar riffs, ambient background noise and echoic saturation it's GPS. As I mentioned earlier, there is something very smart and precise in their song structure. It pushes them out of the boundaries of noise core and into something all their own, all the while hanging on tightly to the pugnacious and aggressive rock that tries to define them. Definitely one of those truly unique local acts, GPS somehow finds a way to make hardcore music refreshing. - Graham Lee Brewer (NONzine) Get Destroy review from Lollipop
Ya know, the promo sheet on this one's pretty right the fuck on. Yeah, they throw around heavy-hitter names like Mission of Burma and Amphetamine Records, but why not? Hell, shoot high guys, thank fuck they're not in it to be mediocre. The compositional/functional/found-noise/skronking guitar hum and strained/hollering/bewildered singing are still intact. This seems to be their "voice." Everything's sharper, tenser, and wound tighter.
For me, they link up hot-wired no-wave derived amp-scree with rock'n'roll impulses that shoot through fellas like Mclusky, Morsel, Mt. Shasta, the Means, and, well, the whole scummy, fertile pond of Skin Graft Records. They're Americans that can't help themselves: They're gonna rock in a culturally genetic way. Thankfully, it's in a personal voice, although I wouldn't mind hearin' 'm wack a Link Wray cover around. Last rec's "Black Helicopter Unit" pulls somethin' like the beginning of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" (their best tune ever) for a lift off.
Pick to click: "Fake Skyline." It's got the kinda clamp-down hook you expect from a guy who'd sharpen the hook on the end of his fake arm to make it really stick when he decides to jab ya. It's as good as "Signal Jammer" off Poison Rays. That's notched up there, buddy. - Craig Regala

Pop-punk never sounded so good. Brash and chaotic Gravity Propulsion System comes off as an elegant experiment in garage fundamentals by pushing the envelope of noise laced rock with sporadic hooks and an almost jam feel. At times this works against the band as it feels like a personal joke, and at others it pays off tenfold.
A mix somewhere between The Break-ups and The Germs, GPS aren't afraid to test the boundaries of musical standards, giving only the drums a consistency throughout the album. Songs are a mish-mash of noise, unfiltered guitar sounds and a pure driven intensity which permeates even their slower material like "Smash The Bass Player". It is this no fear attitude that grabs my attention as it is nailed succinctly in "Mouth" and "Fake Skyline" where the material is all over the place but creates a dominant aura. The later being my favorite for its laconic walking line that pays off big time in the changes, making it a must hear.
Production has to walk a fine line between a refined sound, and a low-fi garage distortion which many people could confuse for low production standards. It is with a discerning ear someone could appreciate the thought that went into making it sound dirty, yet crisp. Nothing is left half-assed as the decisions show that skillful guiding hand, especially in the last track which veers over the spectrum of sounds. Especially in the "Dimension Negative" part of the song does the impact become blatant, with the buzzing distortion of the guitars balanced by the constant bass and staccato drums.
This album isn't for everyone, but then again maybe I don't want everyone to listen to it. It is kind of like an inside club, either you get it or you don't. Most people will probably pass over this record as sheer noise, but man there is just so much more to it, and I will be content just huddle in my corner with it and savor it for myself. - bishop

Surprisingly tuneful, even sprightly noise in the finest no wave tradition. Imagine U.S. Maple as a dance band and you might begin to get the idea.
Or maybe not. There's such an offhanded, loose-limbed feel to these bouncy songs that it is hard to believe they are as scraggly as they are. There aren't that many melodies, but the rhythm section throbs like mad.
An exceptional sort of racket. The production is surprisingly complex and subtle, weaving all sorts of noisy threads together into the songs here. At times, it is tempting to think what you hear is what you get, but often enough something else comes burrowing in behind. I like that.
Smashing. Simply smashing. I'll admit to being a big fan of noise with hooks--but hey, isn't everyone? Well, maybe not, but those of us crazy enough to enjoy this sound know that GPS has shot the bullseye this time.

This might just be the most aptly named record Ive heard in quite some time now. Get Destroy is the name of that record, delivered to us by the Sonic Youth-inspired Gravity Propulsion System, only System are even more loud at times than their predecessors.
Low on the vocals, heavy on the feedback, the trio of Bryan Baxter, Mark Owen, and Lance Pellegrini proceed to bend sound and create new noises for over half an hour, really stretching the mind on whats really acceptable as a song. They might not be quite as adventurous as their inspiration, but they sure as hell follow on the same set of tracks. The squalls of guitar and maelstrom of noise are awash in waves upon waves of reverb, sounding like ungodly things are being done to the guitar.
There are no conventions followed whatsoever, no rules of whats acceptable and what should and shouldnt be done, just a complete, unbridled, free-form mess. No song illustrates this in a brighter light than the thirteen-minute album closer, Time Decay. The first two minutes or so consists of jagged rhythms and disjointed shouted vocal delivery, all over the fuzz-laden heavy distortion in the background. The vocals are loud, but tuned down in comparison with the guitar, drum, and bass, which are all firing with reckless abandon. After that two-minute mark is when things really start to become interesting.
Led in by a thick, chunky bass-line and that continuous reverb, the guitar comes into a limited role to start with, eventually rejoined by some very distant sounding vocals, until around the eight-minute mark, where everything breaks loose, and all the instruments just meld together in this noisy, amorphous cluster in which nothing can be differentiated. Its the musical equivalent of mixing every single shade of paint together, only to end up with a uniform gray. The chaotic nonsense works well for the band though, and the sounds and volume only intensify as the duration furthers and the tunings drop, until reaching the frenzied apex at around 11 and a half minutes.
Not every track has quite the entropic feel of the last, but sprinkled throughout you can find all of the elements that made those thirteen minutes so memorable.
I hope Thurston Moore is out somewhere listening, because this record has done him and the rest of his band proud.
Slug Magazine Review
Gravity Propulsion System = Void + Mission Of Burma + Parts & Labor GPS generate some ferocious amplified noise-punk that sounds like theyre set to go off at any moment. As aggressive as they get, they remain grounded, and at times are actually quite catchy (not bubblegum-popping-on-your-tongue catchy, but memorable at the very least). At times they sound like a static trash-compactor garbling up a Rat pedal with Steve Albini capturing it all on tape, only to sound the next moment like the Raspberries playing in an underground tunnel with a bad sound system on overdrive (and thats a good thing!). The latter half of the disc feels like a Neubauten-by-way-of Sonic Youth-joyride through sound effects and noise loops and right back to structured pile-driving. If anything, Gravity Propulsion System is not noise for noises sake, as they mostly stay within the parameters of standard fare songwriting, pegging them somewhere between the more structured AmRep bands of the past and the frenzied Load bands of today. With equal parts of Misfits and A Wilhelm Screamed mixed together to make some of the smoothest (yet angular) noise pun, Gravity Propulsion use shrill guitar lines to attack their listeners. The first track on the disc What Can I Say is much in the same vein as a Locust track, but is expanded to epic proportions (breaking two minutes) before disintegrating and moving into a very Tom (Against Me!) vocalized track in Mouth. The instrumentation is really carefully crafted in much of the same way, but the subtle shift in vocal ornamentation completely recontextualizes the band. The ended instrumental parts of this track are nice, allowing individuals to fully get an appreciation to the nuanced style of the band, but Gravity Propulsion System really causes whiplash when they moved into a chant-led, almost-Ramones-sounding groove for the later part of the track. Poison Rays of Sound review from Lollipop
Drilling and droning, this is the kinda thing you heard a bunch during the decade when Sonic Youth released Daydream Nation and many of our nation's college students had to turn the dial to the left to hear such things. Nowadays? Ikara Colt could gig with'm just fine, as could Poem Rocket, or some of those angular units wandering around in the yard where Kittens for Christian and The Division of Laura Lee play kickball with Trail of the Dead and Cursive. Will they have a slot on the five-disc tribute to Too Pure recs I'm gonna put out when I hit a big enough number? Hey, any band that even comes up with a title as good as "Damage Control Disguised as Progress/Sick Energy" gets in Gotta love the four videos, too. Really a great way to go about augmenting the spacier side of things. -Craig Regala
