http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DElq6G5iNMEI made this silly video when John blew out the candles on his birthday pie!
A note about that "40" candle...John bought that for my 40th birthday, and we've been using it for every birthday since -- just adding extra candles to represent the extra years. And BTW, I know my singing is bad

I've been feeling like I want to write in this blog more.
I've had something on my mind that I haven't had a place to discuss, so I thought, why not here? This is going to be a comment about an episode of "My Name is Earl" which was shown on October 30. John and I record all our favorite shows on the DVR to watch at our convenience, and because John was traveling a lot last month, we're way behind on our shows. We just watched that particular episode of "Earl" last night.
The part that struck me was the very end, where Joy told Earl:
Good thing me and the minister scared the devil out of that little freak. Reverend Hawnsworth[?] thinks I have great leadership skills -- says that God wants me to run for mayor. Now John and I have been joking all during the past couple months that having Sarah Palin on the Republican ticket made us think of Joy Turner as a politician. We about fell off our chairs when we heard Joy say that...it's like the writers were listening to our private conversations!
The entire episode was about a little boy who believed in Voodoo, and Joy led the angry mob who stormed where he was staying. You all have heard of Gov. Palin's witch hunting pastor, haven't you? If not, check out this video on YouTube:
Thomas Muthee Sermon: Why Sarah Palin? October 16, 2005
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ccmRuCpFjY)
I expect this to be my last comment on the election here!

Midnight came home tonight!
I had seen him outside a couple times this week, both times on our patio where we leave dry food for the local feral cats. Whenever I would get close to the door, he'd run away. But John got home from teaching a class in California last night, and he got to see Midder for the first time earlier this evening! We tried an experiment. We locked Robbie (Midnight's nemesis) in a bedroom and opened the screen door. Midnight walked in nervously, but ran out again before we had a chance to close the door. Later, he came back to eat some more, so we opened the door for him again and moved away. Cautiously he came back in, and went towards the kitchen. John rushed over and shut the screen door!
Mid isn't real happy with us right now, he's hiding under the headboard of our bed and he glares at us when we check on him. We haven't had a chance to check him out to see if he's okay physically yet, but hopefully we'll be able to tomorrow when he calms down. I think he's lost some weight, though, which explains why he came home. We're just so happy he's back! We plan to call the neighbor who first woke me up the other morning to tell me she saw him. I'm going to offer her the reward we hinted at on our flyer. I figure I might not have been watching for him as closely if she hadn't told me he was there!
You can see him here, hiding:

Just wanted to let people know that while Midnight is still not home, we have reason to feel much more optimistic today! At 5:20 this morning, my phone rang. A neighbor who had seen my "Missing Midnight" poster, called me to let me know there was a long-haired black cat sitting in front of her townhouse on the cul-de-sac near our home. I was able to look out the bedroom window and see Midder sitting on the sidewalk! I drug myself out of bed and took a can of food and some cat treats out to try to get him. He ran away, but when I went back inside to get his BFF Lizzie, he came back for a while. I couldn't get close to him, but just knowing he's still in the neighborhood and looks like he's doing okay is making a world of difference for me today! I'm going to try to get out there a few days this week before sunrise to see if I can lure him close enough to grab. He's pretty fast, though, I had trouble catching him when he was inside, too. I wish John were home this week, Midnight might come to him. John will be home from Riverside, CA, on Thursday, so maybe he'll go look, too.
After seeing Midnight this morning, I got inspired and signed on to his MySpace page and added a playlist of appropriate songs! Check them out and see if you agree!

I'm pretty upset right now. I went to upload something to my AOL FTP space today and I was taken to a message that says:
Dear AOL Hometown and Journal's users, Soon you will be receiving an e-mail providing additional information about Hometown/FTP and Journals. Both of these experiences are closing their doors. Please read the following blog entries to learn more about AOL Hometown/FTP and AOL Journals. You can read the whole message HERE I can't tell you how upsetting this is to me! I have maintained my genealogy webpages on AOL for over 10 years! I am certain that I will never be able to track down all the sites where I've registered my pages during that time. Hopefully, I'll be able to get everything transferred to a Rootsweb hosted site soon. AOL has done many things over the years to piss me off and this may be the very last straw!

My youngest baby, Midnight, has gone missing. On Tuesday night at about 11:30 PM, he and Lizzie were wrestling near the back sliding screen door when I heard the screen pop. When I checked it out, I found that the bottom of the door had come out of it's slider and it was open to the outdoors. Lizzie was just sitting there, but Midnight was nowhere to be found. He hasn't been seen since.
I am so worried about him. He's a very nervous cat. I'm not sure he would even come to me if I could find him. When he was here, his daily schedule was to hide all day and come out and play with Lizzie at night, so I imagine him crouching in a small dark space while I'm looking for him. So far, besides looking, I have placed a flier by the mailboxes at our complex and John has called the local animal shelter. They assured us that they immediately scan any animals that they capture for microchips and Midder has one. I've tried tying poor Lizzie outside for hours, hoping she'll draw him out. I have tried setting a humane trap on the patio, but so far, all I've caught was a feral cat and a baby raccoon.
Lizzie seems depressed. She misses him. She has never gotten along very well with the older three cats, but she and Midnight are the best of friends.
When we first brought Midnight home, we were fostering him. I made him a MySpace page which is still there, even though it's been a long time since we were looking for a new home for him. You can see it HERE. The pictures from that page are older, mostly from when he was smaller, so I've uploaded some more recent ones to this account and you can see a slideshow below.
I really miss him.

Just a quick note to let my MySpace friends know that my sister-in-law, Julie, has passed away. I have made her a Find a Grave memorial here.
Here is the actual URL since I forgot that MySpace completely blocks Find a Grave.

Someone might notice that I have not been keeping up with MySpace lately. Honestly, not much has been going on with me, specifically, but John's family is in turmoil. His sister Julie, who had breast cancer in 2005, recently found that she was out of remission and had gone back in the hospital. Julie lives about 10 miles from us. To make a long story short, due to a series of complications, Julie is no longer able to live on her own and the doctors have recommended the end of treatment. She is now on palliative care only, and has been moved to a hospice facility associated with Duke University Hospital. No one can tell us how long she will last. I wanted to share some pictures I took the other day at the Hospice at the Meadowlands. It seems like a wonderful place and she should be as comfortable as possible in her last days. This is such a sad situation, compounded by the fact that Julie will only be 65 on her next birthday, which will be July 31. We had a little party for her with cake and ice cream while she was in the hospital because she mentioned that she was afraid she wouldn't live long enough to celebrate it on the actual day.
These pictures were taken on the day she was moved to the hospice.

Does anyone else reading this use Alltel for their cell phone provider? Have you heard that Verizon is buying Alltel?
We get a good deal on three lines (for me, John, and my mom), and we really love MyCircle. That, and the fact that all my relatives in Nebraska (where I'm told Alltel is the largest wireless provider) so that my calls to them are in network, makes Alltel a great choice for us!
I hate change!

You may have noticed in a previous post that I mentioned that MySpace is now blocking many of the websites that I link to in my genealogy postings. Since then, I have decided to not use this blog for genealogy anymore. For that, you'll have to visit my new blog, Still Digging for Roots. I'll probably be changing the name of this one to something else soon.
My husband, John broke his camera recently, which means I got a new one (and he gets my old one!) My new camera is a Canon PowerShot A650IS. I love it, and I'm feeling much more excited about taking pictures than I have for a long time. This has led me to start participating in weekly photo challenges (usually called "memes") where I post a photo online that fits a theme pictured by the website owners who run the challenge. I started a new blog to post the photos to at Cherie Takes Pictures. The funny thing is that while it's my new camera that inspired me, most of the photographs I've posted so far are those that I took with my older digital cameras.
Check it out and feel free to comment there. I have set it up so that anyone can comment, even those who wish to remain anonymous. But keep in mind, if anyone says something mean anonymously, I'll probably delete the comment. If you want to be critical in a unkind way, be brave enough to let me know who you are

I haven’t been doing a good job at keeping up this journal, have I? One of the things I love about having a subscription to Ancestry.com is that I can work on census research any time of the day or night. I only subscribe to the census option, to me it seems like the best value. Every little piece of new info is a small victory for me. In August 1999, I visited West Finley Cemetery in Washington County, PA, where many family members related to my great-grandmother May (McDaid) Atkinson were buried. The gravestone shown in this entry was taken then. Mrs. Fields was May Atkinson’s first cousin. And ever since then, I have tried to find the first name of the man who married Nina Fields Grim. Just a few days ago, I finally had some luck. In the 1930 census for Cameron, Marshall County, WV, I found Nina Grim, living alone, her marital status marked "D" which would mean divorced. That’s the first time I had been able to track her down with her married name. But it still didn’t tell me who her husband had been. So I looked at the 1920 Census for Marshall County, and found Nina Grim living with her husband, daughter, and her husband’s brother. Unfortunately, the census taker had horrible handwriting, and I couldn’t make out the husband’s name. The Ancestry index called him "Steve", but it looked more like the name started out "stu" to me, maybe Stuart? I then looked in the 1910. The Grim family was listed that year by their initials, S. G. and N. L. Grim. So frustrating! My last plan was to go back to the 1930 census to see if Nina Grim’s husband might have still been living nearby after they separated. Finally, I was able to find a man named Sturgis Grim, living alone with a marital status "D." At last, I had his name! Sturgis Grim seemed like a unique name to me, so I then used Google to search for "Sturgis G. Grim" and found a link to a relative of his who had posted his obituary online, here. I also found an outline of his military service during the Spanish American War, here. Will Sturgis Grim end up being important to my research? It’s too early to tell. I know that he and Nina had a daughter named Adaline, so there’s always the possibility that there are living descendents out the somewhere. And one of them might have some missing piece of info that will take my own line back another generation, or they might know the maiden name of one of my female ancestors, and they just might find me now that I have more information! You never know. Take a look at what I’ve put together about Sturgis Grim!
