I think every aspiring artists needs to read the article Jigsaw from allhiphop.com wrote about how Twitter and other social internet spots could potentially ruin your music career if not handled right. Be careful what you say in blogs and all these other sources of public attention.
What Jig was saying is EXACTLY what I've said for YEARS about Reality TV. If you're wondering what I honestly think about Reality TV... the answer is, of course it can be entertaining and very attention-grabbing... BUT I WOULD NEVER... EVER... IN MY LIFE BECOME CAST OF A REALITY SHOW!!! PERIOD!!!
If you're trying to become a "star", chances are... Reality TV is a bad route. Sure, you'll gain popularity and fame... but the one thing besides talent that makes a "star" interesting is MYSTERY. Back in the days.. the only way we could find out about how an artist was personality-wise... was through magazine interviews, radio interviews, television appearances and interviews (rap city etc.). We only could get a little PIECE here and there. That's what kept us interested!!!!! And they still remained in their "element" that we were used to seeing in the music videos, live performances etc.
NOWADAYS... with all this Reality TV shit.... we get to see EVERYTHING!!! We get to see how crappy some of these chicks look in the morning, breath stankin' and no make-up. We get to see how arrogant, spoiled.. and in a lot of cases.. just how CRAZY and idiotic some of these people are. We get to see how they act when they're drunk off their asses. WORST OF ALL... all of their WEAKNESSES get exposed! It makes a lot of fans lose respect for them. And if it's not respect they've lost... in a sense, they take the artists less serious. ESPECIALLY when it's a person who's becoming popular only through the show.
NAME ONE ACT THAT STARTED ON A REALITY SHOW WHO HAS LASTED OR EVEN MADE AN IMPACT??? I'm not talking about American Idol type stuff. Because they all get to stay in their element. You don't see them scratching their ass on the couch playing Xbox while aruing over missing food in the refrigerator. A lot of these Reality Show contestants/artists got the talent, but the Reality Show fucks up their value. Where's O-Town? Where's Da Band? Where's Danity Kane now? Where's Day 26 now? Where's that dude from The White Rapper Show?
We can sit here and talk about which one drinks too much, who cries the most, who has to take 1,000 takes to record one verse, who has the dirtiest socks, who just broke up with their boyfriend/girlfriend, who cheats on their boyfriend/girlfriend....
but we have no clue when their next tour is, when the next album is dropping or where they are in the charts !!!! THAT'S A DAMN SHAME!!!!
They'll have a hard time being legends! We've seen true-story movies about greats like The Jacksons, Ray Charles, The Temptations, Chess Records, Biggie, Billie Holiday... the list goes on.... THAT CAN NEVER happen for artists who started in Reality TV... Why?.... 'Cause we already know every damn thing about them. We already know ol' dude had to run and get cheesecake ... and do all kinds of pointless split group marathon contests, lol. We already know what went on behind the scenes of their first performances. We already know how the songs were put together and who helped write them. There's NO MYSTERY!!!
I need to stop rambling. Bottom line.... BE CAREFUL WITH WHICH AVENUES YOU TRY TO TAKE TO GET TO FAME! My personal opinion.... Just say NO to Reality TV if you want to be taken serious as an artist.
