So, yeah, we're all really sorry about this, but due to difficulties with getting support bands sorted, the Active Slaughter gig tomorrow won't be able to go ahead. I know this is kind of short notice, but we were hoping up until about yesterday that it'd still be possible to sort something out. So, yeah, get the word out about the gig not happening. Sorry about that.

The brand new Gender & Sexuality themed edition of our AF publication ORGANISE! (phew what a mouthful, lol) is here and its queer so get used to it. Featuring a wide host of AF members from different backgrounds and sexual orientations this is seriously juicy, thought provoking, radical stuff (but then again, that just describes everything we do....; p )
You can read selected articles online or send us a bit of money and we'll mail you a colourful paper copy with the stunning illustration and then have your say. We'd love to know what your thoughts are.

Here's an excerpt from the first article:
"Jacqui Smith's proposals have very little to do with protecting women,
men and transgendered people who work as prostitutes. What they're
really about is controlling immigration, keeping prostitutes divided
and incrasing state control over people's lives"
Go on, get yourself a copy. xoxo

While the rest of the lefties are sending out their usual weak arse reformist propaganda about voting for 'ANYONE JUST NOT THE BNP' bullshit for the upcoming European Elections; we thought we here at the AF would throw in our two cents (pennies) about 'electoral democracy' or 'voting' and why we don't do it and why you shouldn't either.
Go on, put down your fruit salad (Strongbow) for a few minutes and have a read.
Alright fine, you can drink and read.
From a 2006 'Organise!' publication.
"Any remaining illusions, including the worth of voting for politicians, have surely been dashed over the last decade of Labour rule. As anarchists always say, voting changes nothing. Supporting or lobbying politicians only encourages them, to the detriment of self-activity. The Anarchist Federation does not claim to have all the answers, but the anarchist tradition has been influential in many past revolutions and in contemporary struggles. Anarchist communism has endured, and it is growing internationally"
From 'Aspects of Anarchism'
"LEADERS
MOST PEOPLE on the left would argue that ‘democracy’ is infinitely preferable to fascism and many working class people dies in what they saw as a fight against the tyranny of fascism. However, this supposed alternative also takes away our liberty in perhaps a more insidious manner because of the smoke-screen it hides behind. One of the main distinctions between the two is the use of naked force by fascism as opposed to the subtle brainwashing used in a democracy. One method is blatant and crude, the other is subtle and sophisticated but achieving the same goal: our passive acceptance of a system that oppresses us. A major plank of this menacing strategy is the cult of leadership, a cult that is incompatible with the establishment of a society based on freedom and equality.
In any society there is a wide range of abilities, with most people falling somewhere in the middle. The collective intelligence, knowledge and experience of the many far outweighs the contribution of the few so-called ‘geniuses’. Despite this, human history has been marked by the usurpation of struggle and movements for social change by leaders who claim to know best. The struggle of men and women for freedom from the political, economic and spiritual shackles that bind them has always been long and painful. But time and again, having rid themselves of one tyranny, people have allowed another to replace it. Afraid to use their new found freedom, they hold up their wrists up to some new jailer. If a truly free society is to be achieved, which can only be an anarchist communist society, we must do more than get rid of the obvious sources of oppression. The working class must also transform itself as individuals so as to reject leaders, and any new tyranny.
It is not surprising that people are so willing to submit to leaders. Capitalist society is organised so as to bleed us of our ability to think for ourselves and take control of our own lives. This learned passivity manifests itself on the most subtle psychological levels. Individuals are taught from an early age that the best way they can fulfill the human urge to sociability, to belong, is to obey, to accept authority and the hierarchy of leader and follower. There are many examples of such hierarchies and the sub-cultures that support them, from political parties to skinhead gangs. There is a dress and hair code (think New Labour drones!) that identifies people as members of the group. To become a member, individuals signal their acceptance of its culture (and its hierarchy) by changing their clothes, their look, their views, to conform. If the individual questions group behaviour, or challenges the formal or informal leadership structures, then she/he is rejected and loses group membership, a traumatic experience for many. Even groups supposedly challenging capitalism, such as the old-style communist and trotskyist parties, incorporate and crystallize its values, and the hierarchies and division of labour into (for instance) ‘leaders’ and the ‘rank-and-file’. The subversion of the urge to sociability and the search (in a troubled world) for security has produced a cult of leadership. Schools and youth movements are urged to train children to become “the leaders of tomorrow”. Job references must emphasise the applicant’s “leadership qualities”. Workers must elect leaders who will negotiate with the boss. Political parties of left and right choose a leader and then ask voters to choose between them, with the winner making decisions for the entire population. The cult of leadership pervades the whole of society. Initiative
Before we examine what is involved in this general acceptance of leaders, we want to differentiate it from something often confused with leadership: individual initiative. This fundamental impulse to originate and construct, to create something helpful to others and which wins their approval is common to all humanity. It is a self-expressive impulse that has nothing to do with the will to power of the few. The realization of the self, the expression of our uniqueness, is one of the most powerful of human aspirations and a basic building block of a free society and must be preserved at all costs in modern society. However, as anarchist communists, we profoundly believe that the individual can only realize her/himself in a social context, within the community and not in spite of it. We are asked to admire the rags-to-riches story of those who have rejected their origins for a life of wealth and privilege but rarely learn the human cost of success, both to the individual and those they have harmed along the way. We marvel at the fact that such people have become ‘monsters’, seemingly supra-human figures, without realizing that, having abandoned community, their individuality is all that defines them any more. In contrast, if we are able to express ourselves within the context of the many different groups and communities that we belong to, our individuality is enhanced and not, as is so often said, submerged.
We are also told we need leaders because without obedience there would be chaos. It is assumed that without anyone telling us what to do, we would not know what to do and nothing would get done. Nor would we know how to behave. As anarchists we know that human beings are naturally co-operative, problem-solving animals who could manage perfectly well without leaders, and that it is capitalist society that fosters aggression and selfish competition. t is rare indeed for leaders to actually have the answers that solve the social and personal problems confronting us. This need to overcome such problems leads us to charismatic conmen and women who we allow to offer leadership. What they offer is a sham, a demagogic ritual that actually persuades us that the work, the effort and sacrifice demanded to solve the problem we are confronting is worth it, to please the leader. Many supposedly progressive groups, including parties of the left, proclaim the simple need for better leaders. The workers, they say, or the people, have been let down by bad leaders. In other words, they want themselves to replace the ‘bad’ leaders currently in power. This is just another sham, a dangerous diversion for what we need is no leaders, not better ones."

Remember people, who ever wins, WE lose! Let us know what you think.

The sun is out, you've been foced out of your black, patch covered skinny jeans into your shorts and are wondering what to do with yourself in between jet setting off to Cannes/a shitty camping trip to some European punk festival. Well, once again, Sheffield AF has got all the news and events thats fit to burst. Read on....

From the rowdy people that bought you 'G20 Global Meltdown' is yet another melting themed event located in London. It will kick off this weekend on the 23rd of May and is supposedly going to end with us overthrowing the British establishment. hmmmm
"So Meltdown is calling an ARREST THE RETURNING MPS PICKET, at 9 A.M. on Monday June 1st at Parliament. Bring handcuffs.
Full details can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=92024290212
***********
Once we've got rid of that lot, we will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Tienanmen Square (June 4) by visiting the Bank with the Circus of Tienanmen and a Goddess of Democracy. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=85964820355
On the night after the June 4 euro Elections, June 5, as the electorally fraudulent outfit known as New Labour disappears into oblivion, we will launch in its place the long-awaited Labour Party -- the direct action party of the working-class. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=85577383332 And we will Overthrow the Government by June 18! Less than a month to go!
Meltdown is going to offer support to the United Campaign against Police Violence, which has events and meetings planned. Check out. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=162039415042 http://www.againstpoliceviolence.org.uk"
While this sounds great on paper it seems likely (and maybe I'm just being cynical) to end in all the predictable ways. Tears before bedtime (no small thanks to the pepper spray) and a whole lot of people getting shoved about by the overly handsy London 'Murdering Bastards' Met filth. A true world revolution will only happen when the entire world (thats including Skegness and Torquay) are involved not just England. A revolution does not just occur in the streets but in the conciousness of every man, woman and child and everything in between, only when all are free right? Still, it sounds like fun and who are we to say no to giving (or at least trying to give) a good kicking to some greedy MP? So go on get down there. Who knows, we might actually get a little closer to a revolution.
23rd May Stop Police Violence, Kettle New Scotland Yard! Assemble 3pm Trafalgar Square March via Downing Street to New Scotland Yard.
Get your own back on the dirty filth and kettle them instead. Also display your immense wit by bringing an actual kettle, flailing it about and yelling 'HAR HAR! Geddit?! I'm KETTLE-ing the Met! With an ACTUAL kettle!' You will win lots of friends. But in all seriousness, get down to London on Saturday.
23-29 June No Borders and various other groups from France and the UK have put a call out for a transnational NoBorder Camp in Calais France which will take place from the 23rd to the 29th of June and will include a demo about (you guessed it) no borders down on the 27th of June. Be there or be very, very square. Click on the sauce below and you will also find details of other events leading up to the camp which will vary from organisational meetings to discussions and film screenings.

Don't all start snoring at once but this may actually be a fairly decent event, if G20's ruckus taught us one thing it was that we as anarchos and radical anti-capitalists need to communicate far better than we do right now and this conference may just be a step in the right direction.

Some Sussex university students well known for their militancy and direct action tactics have set up a protest camp outside their uni's main admin building in support of free education and against marketisation, cuts, privatisation and soaring fees. This action is yet another in a wave of student lead demonstrations with wider anti-capitalist ideas on social change as has been seen in some of the occupations and anti-disciplinary demos that have taken place over the past few months.
Here's a little blurb for you to read:"The Students are camped out on the green opposite Sussex House demanding that the University administration listens to the student body that has unanimously opposed the ongoing reforms to the university over the last two years.
The camp aims to expose the university administration for what they really are, businessmen running our university like a capitalist enterprise.
We believe that education is a right not a privilege and that it should be free at the point of access so it is accessible to all. Universities should be institutions that challenge society and promote social progression not edubusinesses where students are customers buying an 'education'. We believe that education is a value in itself and that the purpose of a degree course should not be to churn out workers to feed the capitalist alienated-labour system.
The camp is a free space and invites all visitors to come and pay a visit and come help build the space up with whatever skills you may have. Whilst the camp is functioning, we do have a tat list of stuff that is still needed: stoves/bbq pots/cutlery food tea/coffee/soya milk tents bins/bin bags/recycling bins banner materials bunting torches wood/tools soft furnishings facepaint PEOPLE
Come, swing by, hang out, have a cup of tea, make a placard, build a bender or come and stay for a few days. see you at Camp Against Cuts
Camp Against Cuts
As yet they do not have a blog or even *gasp* a twitter but show your support by sending emails to the sussex occupation facebook group or going down to Brighton yourself! You can even check out the wonderful Cowley club while you're there and its only like an hour away from bloody London so you really have no excuse.
Authors Note: What the hell does 'build a bender' mean?! Or is that just a typo?....

One thing is absolutely clear about the current situation in Palestine: the Israeli state is committing acts of horrific violence against the Palestinian working class, and this needs to be stopped immediately.
But that's not all there is to say about the situation...
On both sides of the conflict, the idea that opposing Israel has tomean supporting Hamas is worryingly common. We totally reject thisargument (along with all the other false choices our rulers offer us). Just like any other set of rulers, Hamas are happy and willing to sacrifice ordinary Palestinians if it'll help to increase their power. This isn't just some vague theoretical point – it's a fact that's become painfully true in the experience of many Palestinians, such as those killed in the battles between Hamas and Fatah, who are no better and equally lacking in genuine answers.
Against the divisions and fake choices set up by nationalism, we fully support the workers of Gaza – not because of their nationality, ethnicity, or religion, but simply because they're real living, feeling, thinking, suffering, struggling human beings. And this support has to mean total hostility to all those who would oppress them – first and foremost the Israeli state and the Western governments and corporations that supply it with weapons, but also any other set of cynical politicians or theocrats who seek to use working-class Palestinians as pawns in their power struggles.
Alternative solutions to those offered by the statists do exist, they are not just utopian dreaming. The self-management and autonomous organisation of many Palestinian villages and the ongoing resistance to the colonisation of Palestine by working class Palestinians in solidarity with outside groups like Anarchists Against The Wall show that there is another way. Solutions like these that come from the working class and reject statism, religious fundamentalism and the violence perpetuated by the Israeli state and Hamas are the only way forward.
Simply because Hamas are fighting the Israeli state that we are unable to criticise them. It's naive to claim that these discussions should not be happening now. It is the most important time to be discussing who will make claims over Palestine when this conflict is over. The fact is that these wars are waged by theocrats and politicians when actually the Palestinian and Israeli working class are not enemies, yet they are being used or manipulated by their respective regimes to fight against each other or at least to hate each other. As we've seen already, some of the biggest demonstrations against what is happening have been in Israel. Whose conflict is this? It's not the poor mother and her children who have no food or the father and husband who cannot defend his family. It's Hamas' and the Israeli state and yet it is the mother and her children and the father and husband who are dying and suffering.
Hamas have proven perfectly happy to break strikes when they've wanted to (medical staff for instance), and intimidated striking workers with AKs. For a period recently both they and Fatah took turns kidnapping or attempting to assassinate the same prominent trade unionists. Trade unions in Palestine may be corrupt and factional, but given both sides were attacking the same people, it all shows that Hamas, like the capitalist faction they are, would crush the first sign of working class self-organisation at gun point were it to appear.
- And we are justified to tell the truth about this situation, no matter where we are! Solidarity among the international working class! Real alternatives and the struggle for liberation, both from the Israeli state AND Hamas has to start soon, otherwise there will be no Palestinian working class left!

Joining in the wave of student occupations is Sheffield University! Including members of the Sheffield AF, other actvist and political groups (such as Sheffield Animal Friends) and non-affiliated students and workers, the Hicks Building is now well and truly occupied in solidarity with Palestinian people. If you're a student and you've got spare time between spending your loan on Pot Noodles and White Lightening or watching the Mighty Boosh repeats then come down to the Hicks Building and check out lecture theatres 5& 6! (That's right two rooms). The mood so far is excellent (despite the dry ban; meaning no booze or smack) and there are plans being made for the next day like organising activities, buiding public support for the campaign, sneaking in vodka and discussing how we the student occupation movement can grow among many, many other things. But tonight everyone is either headed off to sleep in the 'quiet room' (5) or chilling out in room 6 and enjoying the free food. *Apologies for the lack of usual Sheff AF wit (HA!) and pictures in this post, but we are very tired and we've got the shakes from the lack of coke. Goodnight kids! To find out more juice check the saucy link: sheffoccupied.blogspot.com xoxo

"MARCH 28/09 //
MILITANT WORKERS: DIRECT ACTION BLOC 'Put People First' Anti-G20 demonstration, 11am Central London
As the financial crisis has spurred a global economic recession the reality of the situation is being faced by us all – price hikes and wage cuts, job losses, spiralling debt and repossessions. The institutions of government and global finance are making us pay for their mistakes, giving themselves hefty bonuses for the privilege. As big banks get billions of our money to bail them out, the Post Office is threatened with privatisation and mass redundancies to claw back the pension hole! Government and bosses, while protecting their own interests, are steadily losing their grip as the anger of the working class becomes more and more apparent after a decade of enforced 'social peace'. Putting working class anger first The recent wildcat strikes at the Lindsay Oil Refinery saw workers take action for themselves, without union backing. Thousands of workers across the country walked out in sympathy strikes – a practice still outlawed under the Thatcherite anti-trade union laws. No repercussions were suffered by the workers - a lesson to us all. And although we oppose such slogans as “British Jobs for British Workers”, we do not dismiss the experiences, anger and positive action of those workers to develop a pro-working class position, based not on capitalism's demands for inter-worker competition, but on international class solidarity. If we want social change we must fight without prejudice for it. Solidarity is not a word but a weapon
Our purpose is to put direct action at the core of any fightback - against the repossessions and redundancies that we will face over the coming months and years, to restate our commitment for an international unity amongst all working class people regardless of nationality, race, sexuality or religion. We stand shoulder to shoulder with all those who take direct action against their current situation (against the state and its institutions, against the bosses and the capitalism they cling to), and confront those who seek to hinder or recuperate that action - fascist parties like the BNP, government forces, the trade union elite and the corporate media. The memory of the miners strike, Wapping, Poll tax lingers long and hard. 2009 is our summer of rage - we are only as strong as the power we give ourselves.
Join the direct action bloc on the Put People First mass demonstration on Saturday March 28th. Meet in Victoria Embankment Gardens, 11am. Look for the red and black flags.
APRIL 1/09 // RECLAIM THE MONEY Meet in the Square Mile (London's Financial centre) to take back what's ours
World leaders, including Barak Obama, are set to meet at Docklands Excel Centre in London's East End, for the G20 financial summit on April 2nd, to sort out the global crisis they themselves conspired to create. While unemployment escalates along with debt and poverty - we are told to tighten our belts, not to complain, to have faith in bankers, bosses and politicians, these leaders are preparing the biggest shake up in the history of capitalism since the 1930s. We can only imagine what is on offer as their solution - from the people that brought us wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine, from the heads of economies that continue to concentrate the world's wealth in the hands of a tiny minority from the obscene rich and powerful who continue to steal the products of our labour and time, forcing us to fight amongst ourselves for what's left.
We are living in uncertain, dangerous times, where we can either allow our futures, and the future of our children, to be decided by the same class of people that have brought us into this crisis (and continue to profit from our misery) or we can decide to get rid of the lot of them and organise society differently - for our own benefit and of the benefit of those around us; those we work with, those we live with, for a future based on our collective needs.
We are their crisis Let's make this a chance for a fundamental change in society. Let's reclaim the history of working class struggle for a new free world, for a global human community fit for all, not the undeserving rich elite who are happy to see our lives ruined if it means that they stay in charge and at the top.
Join thousands of disgruntled, angry, pissed off people on the streets of the financial district. As the bankers continue to cream off billions of pounds of our money let's put the call out – RECLAIM THE MONEY, storm the banks and send them packing. April 1st in the square mile, City of London financial district APRIL 2/09 // G20 London Summit, Excel Centre, Docklands A day of fucking up the summit and other adventures. Be warned. Be aware. Be ready!
London Anarchists"
Check out more deets on indymedia but you might want to ignore some of the insane ramblings/bullshit statements in the comments including one from a very testosterone driven copper. One comment did stand out amongst all the crazy; "No one of us has a monopoly on ideas... if we all do what we are best at, the combined effort will be vast. Any effective tactic will lead to oppression - it's not point singling out black blocs - if mass strikes started affecting the status quo they would soon crack down hard on them too. Current mood: accomplished
We must fight for spaces that are determined by the needs of the people on a class struggle basis. We need a new mode of engagement, mutual aid and non coercive co-operation by continuously celebrating and agitating for these free, autonomous safe spaces. Its important to remember that we should use all the creativity and diversity we have in the squatters movement to link up across communties and borders with others who share the same desire for a different, exciting way of thinking and living as part of the larger fight against capitalism. Its much easier to resist an aggressive landlord or an illegal eviction with the help and backing of your local community than it is to do it alone. Get on down to Brissle!
