I think most people know the Riverboat Gamblers are my favorite band, but they are also my friends. Ian was in a terrible bike accident, click this link and read the details and if you can donate to his mounting medical bills. I am very glad that my check this week had some overtime so that I can do something atleast to help. thanks.

There are some changes in store for ‘ole Johnny Volume. First as some of you may or may not know I am getting married. That’s right Julie and I are tying the knot April 3rd, and after five years I am sure she’s knows what she is in for, and she still said yes!

Another big change for me is that I am no longer doing BANNED! on a regular basis, I am still going to pop up there from time to time for some special events, including our much anticipated three year anniversary in November, as well as another Singles Going Steady, which has always been a good time @ BANNED! I ask that you continue to support BANNED! LaRue, Tyler, Sasha and Jugheads, as BANNED! has been a big part of my life and will continue to be important to me.

So with no longer lugging records down to Jugheads each week, I now have a more open schedule, so I am going to be helping out the talented DJ Dana at Valley Fever. Yucca Taproom was looking to expand VF to every Sunday, and as Dana and I can attest to, DJing every week can be laborious. So Dana and I will be altering each Sunday. I am very excited about this opportunity, as I have been looking for a chance to spin country records more regularly. I am still going to be doing Outlaw Country Brunch about once a month, and keeping the format for Valley Fever as what Dana has been doing. I am booking artists to play, and I’ll be spinning traditional and Outlaw Country records. My first week with be Sunday October 25th and my musical guest will be Mike Skullbuster! Mike, formally of the Smoky Mountain Skullbusters has been doing his own thing for a while and I am very excited to have him play my first Valley Fever!

Other then that I am booking a few shows, check here and the Etc…Promotions page for info www.myspace.com/etcpromotions  Thanks for checking this out, and if you are interested in playing one of my Valley Fever dates message me here, and for all other bookings please contact the Etc…Promotions page, thanks.

I'll tell you what I love, going to shows. Drinkin'a beer, having a good time, watch a band rock out for the few people that came out to see them on a Monday night. That's what it's all about, you will see the best bands ever giving it there all in a dive, no matter how many people are there. If you forgot about rock and roll, this is where it is still alive and for real. These bands aren't crying over a rider, PA, or guestlists.  Rancid did this once, Wilco did this once, the fucking Who did this once. Yeah I am bummed out that Green Day tickets are more then I can afford, and the venue will have $8 watered down Buds. But down the street some kids on a Tuesday is going to rock the fuck out with dollar Pabsts.

Newtimes did a little write up on the Waylon Day that kicks off @ 6PM Sunday! Come on down and celebrate the life, times and music of the greatest god damned country singer there ever was....
http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2009-06-11/music/valley-fever-celebrates-waylong-jennings-birth/

Local country performers Chip Hanna, Steve Larson, Ray Lawrence Jr., Dog of the Moon, and Rick & Tony Martinez each bring something unique to our tribute to the outlaw legend on his birthday. These guys are all great and will have some special guests up there for some songs. They'll take turns playing some of the classic Waylon favorites and play some together later on in the night. Johnny Volume and Dana will be spinning all Waylon all night. At Valley Fever, the beer's cold and the music's old. Doesn't get any better than this.

Waylon Jennings. Probably the best guy ever.

It’s been a while since I did one of these so it maybe lengthy. Actually I did one but stupid myspace lost it after I typed out a bunch of shit…Anyway….

Records.
The Riverboat Gamblers, whom I know you all know I love, have a new record out, Underneath The Owl. It is, of course, amazing! The new line up is solidified, and sound great. Julie and I caught them on two AZ shows, and of course, they blew everyone away. If you got that 7” from To The Confusion, the unreleased b-side, Keep Me From Drinking was re-recorded and sounds amazing. Go buy it, go see them, be happy. 180 gram black vinyl w/download card.

Speaking of the Gamblers, Ian of RBG and Pat former bassist have a side band called Broken Gold, and a 7” on Good Friends records. Great record of the Replacements/Jawbreaker style, gold with blue splatter vinyl download code as well. Get it, Vinyl Collective sells it.

Radio Crimes, feat. Alex Empty of Lucky Stiffs & the Half Empties, have a beautiful 10” ep available form May Cause Dizziness Records. It’s a four song E.P. that mixes Alex’s hooks with The Jam style rock. It’s fuckin’ great, and they play their record release Sat. June 13th @ Jugheads with Casket Life.

Rumspringer, oh god Rumspringer! This is the best new band in Arizona! Mikey Wretch and Matt Dobbins play the old dudes to two young fellas from Streetside Prophet. SP was one of the more under appreciated AZ bands, and I was sad to see them break up. Until two of the raddest dudes in AZ agreed to play the rhythm section, and good god damned you have to hear it. They have a 10” out that is amazing. Think bay area 90’s pop punk, but with a little more Off With Their Heads or Scared Of Chaka thrown in….Amazing! Trust me!

Websites/Bored at work…..
These are the sites I check out on my down time, in case you need to fill some time as well…. www.azpwithdrawal.com www.azpunk.com www.vinylcollective.com www.anti-snob.com www.razorcake.com www.punknews.org

Have you noticed that in at least east valley we finally got on Cox Cable the MLB network? It is amazing! The other day before work I watched Shea Goodbye, tons of players memories of Shea Stadium! Then a few days prior they recapped the entire 1986 season, you know I loved that! They show random games from the past, not just play offs or World Series, and even current games! The best channel ever, no doubt!

So if anybody reading this has some old issues of Razorcake and they want to get rid o f them, let me know. I am looking for issues #s 1-3, 5-7, 12, 16, 24-27 thanks.

Speaking of Razorcake they just released issue #50! The interview w/ Davey Tiltwheel is great, I may do a Burrito month myself, great idea!

Other then that, there are some great shows coming up, keep your eyes peeled for those, Julie and I got engaged, looking at a spring date for the plunge! I got a tattoo of Eldridge, cause he’s the best. Casket Life is playing more, looking to get the record out sometime, and a tour in the fall. Creepsville 666 just finished a tour, minus blizzards was a good one. They also are nearly sold out of the 1st press of cds, impressive for having done it all themselves. Their 1st video for My Baby’s A Psycho is out too, check their myspace page!

Oh yeah one more thing, check out Greaser's Pizza next to the Yucca Taproom. They have great deals on pizza, subs, hot dogs, that sort of thing. You can even order A Johnny Volume Pizza! It is of course a veggie pizza, it has bell peppers listed twice, I suggest Pepperchini's. Well That’s about it for right now, stay tuned for more info down the road….~JV!

From this weeks New Times

Local punks Johnny Volume and Tyler King are making like The Jeffersons. More specifically, they're taking their long-running punk rock weekly, BANNED, and "movin' on up" to Jugheads, 5110 East McDowell Road, starting on Thursday, March 19. The night debuted in late 2006 at Stray Cat Bar & Grill as "BANNED in Tempe," where King slung the booze as bartender, and Volume spun choice selections of punk, hardcore, and reggae platters from his expansive record collection. Tyler recently started handling the booking duties at Jugheads (which went through a renovation and ownership change a few weeks back), however, and decided to bring his boy Johnny along for the ride. Another change is the addition of DJ Mark LaRue (formerly of the 1.....2...3...4!!! punk night at the Rose and Crown) who will help Volume man the decks. The music starts at 10 p.m. with no cover and specials like $1 PBRs and $3 Jäger. Call 602-225-0307.

Current mood:  cranky

I fucking hate being a broke ass...I don't ask for much, some coffee, beers, good times with my Homies...Those good times are as follows for this week...

Tuesday night, nothing, unless you want to come over and help me pull records. Which is really not fun, trust me, I've asked Eldridge to help a bunch, he never does.

Wednesday, watch Mets game after work. Play records, come down. It's the Terror afterparty.

Thursday, lawn shit, go see Jap Mon, the Ergs and American Steel!!!

Friday work, night, maybe nothing.

Saturday work, night go see Adventure Jukebox, used to be a rad CT punk rock radio show, now it's JR's crazy B-day band!

I have to work on the Sabbath...for shame.

Talked to my Mom today, so today was not so bad. But I am seriously bummed out on my broke ass status...Weekend fun (DJing Lucero, Bowling, TT's) makes way for weekday lint in my pockets....

Some young kid tried to argue some stupid ass shit w/ me the other night. It's one thing when you say stupid shit, but then to try and say that I played Staind? Fuckin' Staind? Come the fuck on. Yeah and Darrin knows nothing about east coast hard core, child. What I wanted to say was, "When I was fresh outta JR. High school we had respect for those older then us in the punk rock scene, if at least because if not we would have gotten our asses kicked, so consider yourself lucky." But then again that kid was not in my scene, but raher the Famous Bars and Stars shit that thinks Op Ivy was THE most influencial punk band of all time...here a just a few more so...

Bad Brains, The Ramones, New York Dolls, The Clash, Agnostic Front, The Stooges, MC5, Dead Boys, Sex Pistols, and a shit load more, but what the fuck do I know? Dick.
