MUCHO 11/25 BASH

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Back in the late 90's there was a buzz around Latin Alternative music. Bands from all over the US, Latin America, and Spain were receiving major attention and creating a new type of music for a new generation. Then Ricky Martin had his comeback tour and left a giant turd on what could have been an amazing new music scene. Reggaeton was the nail in the coffin.

Skip ahead to just two years ago when a group of pachanga scientists decided to start throwing Latin nights at a local Mexican Bar known for its occasional small concerts on the weekends. Add a new found excitement for Latin Alternative and you have the beginnings of a very exciting movement happening right here in Downtown. Ricky Garay is right in the middle of it.

I had the rare privilege of meeting with Ricky in a quiet location so we could do an interview.

MONK TURNER: Tell us about the beginnings of Mucho Wednesday.

RICKY GARAY: Initially my friend Land, Marjorie Garcia, and I were doing a party called Magnet which we did with Sam Sparro in Little Toyko..

MT: I know Sammy!

RG: Oh.. ok. Well see then you know! When we'd be out promoting we'd always listen to Spanish Pop and at the time we'd always comment that there wasn't anywhere we could go and enjoy a night of all Spanish Pop. Around the same time I started working at La Cita as an assistant manager and I met Carl Lofgren. I was a part of a lot of the conversations regarding the night, the music, and the parties. Out of the blue I put the two together: I knew that we wanted a place to go listen to Spanish Pop and I knew La Cita needed something young and hip for the Latino audience and I asked and they said yes so we tried it.

MT: Has there always been such a large draw?

RG: It's always been a consistent draw. It has always been a big draw. But I think that initially it was real word-of-mouth. We started out with pretty much a core group and kept expanding and expanding. Now we have a real new batch of fresh faces every time.

MT: ...coming mostly by word-of-mouth.

RG: I think so. I think a lot of people tell their friends about it after they've been here once. A lot of people get really passionate and we have a lot of people where it is a weekly destination. It's their hang. It's where they go and they party.

MT: Does having it downtown add a special element to the night?

RG: I think so. I think downtown is a very central location to the city. It is in the middle of everything. East-side, west-side, north-side, south-side. That really makes it accessible to people no matter where you are it is a fair drive. I think that's been a huge part of it.

MT: Tell us a crazy story. One crazy night at Mucho Wednesday.

RG: I'll tell you one and hopefully I won't get in too much trouble. What pops in my mind is recently at a Very Be Careful show during their residency. If you've ever seen them they're pretty big guys. In the middle of their cumbia set, the cowbell player decided that he needed to go crowd surfing. So the crowd picked him up and carried him around the entire dance floor. [laughter] Then the accordion player got a little jealous and so he got up and the crowd picked him up and carried him around the whole dance floor while he was playing the accordion. The whole time my heart is in my throat because I'm terrified that someone is going to drop someone. It didn't happen...

MT: No ambulances?

RG: No ambulances needed. They gently placed him back on the stage and I was able to start breathing again.

MT: That's magic. Perfect. What can one expect at Mucho Wednesdays?

RG: A really broad range of Spanish Pop. When I say Spanish Pop I mean electro, banda, norteño, cumbia, meringue, Juan Gabriel, Javiera Mena, Amandidita, Los Bukis, Kinky, Afrobeta, Cumbia Queers. Also, it is a very mixed crowd. Gay, straight, male, female. It's a real happy smiley faced easy going crowd that come to dance.

As eloquent as Ricky is, there are really no words to describe Mucho Wednesday. Go for yourself. The show takes place every Wednesday at La Cita (336 S. Hill). Get there before 10pm and there is no cover. After 10pm it is around $5 and all the money goes to support the live music. In November they'll be having a special event at the Echoplex in Echo Park in case you are feeling sassy. MUCHO WEDNESDAYS

Celebrates its 2nd year anniversary as the Premiere Latin-Alternative/Dance party in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles

Expands its ‘MUCHO’ brand by working with: Telemundo and Mun2’s “Descarga”@CityWalk 2009, Latin GRAMMY©’s 2009 and ReMezcla among others

Vesper Public Relations. Los Angeles. Wednesday September 30, 2009. Off the heels of celebrating its second anniversary a couple months ago with a Sold Out event where they had to turn away over 300 people, as the Premiere Latin Alternative/Dance party in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, Mucho Wednesdays continues to expand its brand by working with some of the leading Latin music entitities such as: one of the leading Southern California free concert series Telemundo and Mun2’s “Descarga” held this summer at CityWalk, ReMezcla, MySpace and most recently Latin GRAMMY’s 2009 among others.

Mucho Wednesdays’ DJ ‘Pixtu’ performed at the Latin GRAMMY’s 2009 media conference event on September 17, 2009 @ the renowned Conga Room in the heart of Los Angeles.

Click here to watch what a night is at Mucho Wednesdays:
http://vimeo.com/user17586..24/videos

A night of Mucho is a lighthearted fun-filled event that blends the classics that organizers grew up listening to at home and the latest sounds emanating from the most interesting Latin recording artists they can find, locally, nationally and internationally. There is only one golden rule for Mucho Wednesdays: Music is strictly Spanish, all night, every night - period.

A night of Mucho Wednesdays can be described as a true reflection of the mosaic of the City of Angels, a vibrant multicultural melting pot of people from all walks of life, artists from the likes of Devandra Banhart and Sam Sparro to Gil Cerezo and Cesar from Kinky, all dancing to the soundtrack of the most avant garde musical sounds. This takes place every week on Wednesdays, at the historic downtown venue La Cita Bar, located at 336 South Hill Street.

Mucho Wednesdays is growing in reputation and scope by hosting residencies and showcasing DJs from the Latin alternative music world, asking them to come and join in the fun. The best part about all of it is that, no matter what language you speak or dance to, everyone is welcome!

The list of bands that have performed at Mucho Wednesdays reads like a who’s who of the vibrant burgeoning Latin pop scene of Los Angeles over the past two years, lending to the credibility and discerning ears of the tastemakers at Mucho Wednesdays.

Mucho Wednesdays has hosted one-night shows and residencies featuring some of the hottest Latin alternative talent such as: L.A. via Chilean born songstress Pilar Diaz (formerly lead singer of Los Abandoned), folk punk outfit from Los Angeles La Santa Cecilia, Uli & The Gringos, L@s Cafeter@s (who were recorded live for an album), Palenke Soul Tribe, Torino, Love Grenades, Chana, Babaluca (Phoenix, AZ) , Sanchez Dub (Mexico, D.F.), Afrobeta (Miami, FL.), Monareta (Bogota, COL) Wait.Think.Fast, Ceci Bastida and Colombiano cumbia champions Very Be Careful, to name just a few of the most recent performances. In addition they've also showcased world class DJs such as Marcelo Cunning from New York’s ‘Nacotheque’, from Mexico, DJ and Producer Julian Brody off Modus Vivendi Records, to Oro 11 of Bersa Discos fame (Buenos Aires, Argentina.)

The Mucho Resident DJs are…
Frank Leopold has remixed several songs for artists like Pilar Diaz, and is often spinning his brand of Spanish pop at various L.A. hot spots. DJ Noir is known for his incredible ‘guilt-free’ Pop sensibilities, which helped cement Mucho's sound and identity. DJ Pitxu (Ricky Garay), special guest DJ at the September 17 Latin GRAMMY event, still manages to squeeze in Mucho classic dance sets and can also be seen providing DJ support for many Mucho bands. DJ Pajaro, Mucho's Lady DJ was voted "Best Addition to the Club Scene" by Ciudad magazine thanks to her handpicked Spanish pop selections. Together, they work the turntables at Mucho Wednesdays, spinning classic Spanish pop as well as the latest dance tracks that are coming out of the Latin alternative scene. Recent additions to the Mucho Wednesday Guest DJ Line up have included Rudy Bleu (Outre), Dino Dinco, and S.A.M.

It's been two years, and now, their first record release...
Mucho Wednesdays has been celebrating its two-year milestone with some historic live music events and, in what may be a sign of things to come, is releasing a live album on its own independent label, "Mucho Music"!

The first EP was recorded live at Mucho Wednesdays home, La Cita; featuring the contemporary Son Jarocho styling’s of "L@s Cafeter@s", from the Eastside Cafe/ Echospace (a community center based in El Sereno, CA). L@s Cafeter@s is a group of community organizers that teach and share the tradition of Son Jarocho with anyone who is interested in learning the art. Over the course of two nights during their Mucho Wednesdays residency this past June, L@s Cafeter@s put on two brilliantly passionate performances. They became the first artists to have their sets recorded live for Mucho Music by Tommy Azerian and Eugene Toale (EAT Music), with Eugene Toale finishing off the final production and mix down of the CD. Capturing the stellar live performances that they have had on stage has long been a dream of the Mucho Wednesdays team, and now, in commemoration of its two-year anniversary, it's become a reality!

Who are the producers of Mucho Wednesdays?
Mucho Wednesdays initiated as a mid-week Latin-pop dance party. Later, due to popular acclaim, it turned into a weekly event that was originally produced by a small group of friends - Ricky Garay (DJ Pitxu), LAND, and Marjorie Garcia (DJ Pajaro.)

Since then, Ricky Garay has continued to produce Mucho Wednesdays and is working with other partners to handle the steady two-year growth and transition of Mucho Wednesdays into Mucho Music.

Founders and resident DJs created a party that started with celebrating alternative ‘indie’ Spanish music and developed into one of the hottest get-togethers in the City of Angeles. Many consider it a can't-miss weekly event!

Two years is a huge milestone for any club in Los Angeles, let alone a Latin Alternative night. As radio host Mark Torres from KPFK 90.7 FM ‘Travel Tips From Aztlan’ put it, "it's like dog years for a club".

What people are saying about Mucho Wednesdays…

"Garay is not only an accomplished DJ and promoter but has invigorated the LA Latino music scene with his hipster club series, ‘Mucho Wednesdays’.”
-Paul Saucido, Saucidoslant.com

“‘You’ve got to move.’ This seems to be the manifesto of Mucho Wednesdays, celebrating its second birthday of unbridled Latin pop. By nine, La Cita’s patio was shoulder-to-shoulder.”
- Gerard Olson, L.A. Record.com

“We all waited anxiously in line at La Cita on July 1st, rubbing away the goosebumps caused by the chill of the night and wishing we would have arrived earlier. Once inside, the warmth of the crowd quickly soothed our angst and we wasted no time in losing ourselves in a devoted crowd.”
- Tribute To The Stage.com

Mucho Wednesdays is open to the public, 21 and over with proper identification.

The Slant Welcomes "Mucho Updates!"

Back in the day, when I was a devoted actor, I had several comedy groups in Los Angeles. One of the most talented comics out of the bunch was a very young Ricky Garay. Years later, Garay is not only an accomplished DJ and promoter but also has invigorated the LA Latino music scene with his hipster club series, "Mucho Wednesdays." Now I have for a few months been trying to get Ricky to join us. Well finalmente, he did it! And in true Ricky fashion, he got Pilar Diaz to interview him! Yes! Thanks Pilar. They both give a great rundown of the history of Mucho! Also mark your calendars in LA for Pilar's residency at Mucho!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 14, 2009

PILAR DĺAZ RELEASES GENRE-BLENDING SOLO COLLECTION –
“PILAR DĺAZ”
OUT NOW!!!

“Chilean rockera Pilar Díaz emerges from L.A.'s Los Abandoned, once signed to Neil Young's Vapor imprint, but rather than West Hollywood punkette, she's channeled Julieta Venegas and Lila Downs into a mouth-watering eight-song EP… and still doesn't have a label. Take the hint, gringo.”
– Raoul Hernandez, Austin Chronicle 2009

Direct from Los Angeles via Chile- Pilar Díaz releases her captivating first solo album Pilar Díaz on OUT NOW (April 14th). Armed with a Gameboy and her signature ukulele, Pilar is creating a new approach to the pop/folk genre, displaying the musician's multitude of influences. Tastemaker BLOG LA Record has described her as the “Latina Bjork”.

Pilar has spent the past year working on her self-titled album and honing her song-writing craft as an artist in-residence at Quiksilver’s SiteLA. Pilar was one of six “Visionaries in Residence” at the Echo Park, CA art gallery/communal workspace/event venue. The result became her solo album Pilar Díaz - a bi-lingual, genre-bending collection of 8 songs that tempers folkloric influences with irresistible dance rhythms. Pilar has bravely stepped away from the style and success of her previous project, the LA-based band Los Abandoned, to produce a unique and deeply personal record that is all her own.

The Chilean- born and Californian- raised singer-songwriter's debut navigates through various musical worlds as Díaz beautifully sings heartfelt songs of a lover's patience, superstitions, and the struggle for life affirmation. Central to Diaz’s creative and courageous genre-bending approach on the album is the ukulele that lends its folkloric sounds of tranquility to many of her songs whether it is the effects-laden melodies on "Ilegal en Estyle," or the pensive strumming on "Novia de Soldado." The instrument takes center stage on the song "Perdido" where the album finds its poetic zenith with profound existential lyricism accompanied by the lamenting sounds of the accordion and viola as played by members of F-Stop Serenade.

Co-Produced by Díaz and Gabrial McNair, whose collaborations include No Doubt and Gwen Stefani. Clay Morrow and the DJ/Dub Gold Cobra crew also produced. The song "Friday the 13th (Trece)" also featured in a Gameboy remix by Morrow, employs infectious reggae-influenced riddims while "El Otro Yo," grooves along a slick bass line and the trumpeteering of Mike Bolger. Blending the best of both worlds, "Piñata," is unlike any other as it couples the marimba melodies of the Mexican port city of Veracruz with heavy hip hop flavored bass drum hits. The violin strings of Amir Yagmai additionally provide the musical foundation for Díaz's harmonious flows in the dual intersecting languages of Spanglish. Pilar Díaz’s debut self-titled album is OUT NOW on all major digital service providers and a limited edition physical piece (hand-stitched, a true work of art for fans) is available through Pilar’s merch store https://store.merchsquad.com/pilardiaz/

In advance of the record’s release date, Díaz has created 2 videos for her album- The first for the upbeat lament “Piñata” which juxtaposes the seemingly cheery images of a kids birthday party to the not so subtle bashing of a piñata-“How come no one has ever thought of using that prevalent image as a metaphor for a broken heart?” (Austin Chronicle 2009). The video was directed by José Asunción.

The second video “Novia de Soldado” is a heartfelt rumination through the people and streets of Valparaiso, Chile. Filmed this past January, Pilar and director/friend Bárbara Matas have created a moving vision of Díaz’s beloved birthplace. Simple but absolutely rich in imagery, the video for “Novia de Soldado” transcends Valparaíso and makes your heart yearn for something beautiful, something a lot like home.
Going straight to the heart of the downtown L.A. music scene with a Mucho Wednesdays- type of party: Díaz begins a 3-week residency at La Cita on Hill Street May 20th.
