Classic Rock:

"Classic Rock
progressive metal faves To-Mera are back with a brand new EP, titled Earthbound. After their full-length masterpieceDelusions (2008) the band have parted company with Candlelight Records and recruited two new members: Richard Henshall (keyboards) and Mark Harrington (bass). The EP features four tracks – Mesmerised,EarthboundArcane Solace and Another World – and throughout To-Mera sound more gritty and hard-edged than before. On first listen, they also appear to have reined back slightly on their patented jazz-tastic musical twists’n’turns, possibly in an attempt to appeal to the ‘mainstream’ goth metal market. It’s still damn good stuff, however, and Julie Kiss remains one of the most idiosyncratic and compelling femme vocalists around."

Femme Metal.net

"
This is the first To-Mera release to feature new members Richard Henshall and Mark Harrington, and with these new members, comes a new sense of maturity to their sound. Confident yet also relaxed, nothing here sounds forced, and demonstrates the band's continued desire to blend many different genres to create their own brand of forward-thinking modern metal. There's little in the way of repetition here - title track "Earthbound" is an interesting mix of prog metal and laid-back jazz, whilst "Arcane Solace" would easily please fans of the likes of tech metallers Meshuggah and Textures. Taking the blueprint established on previous releases "Transcendental" and "Delusions", and continuing to build on it, this London-based quintet have produced an EP worth checking out. To-Mera fans will not be disappointed with this one.
This would appeal to fans of Meshuggah, Lacuna Coil, Opeth, and contemporary progressive metal"

Masterful Magazine:

"After a demo in 2005 and two albums on Candlelight Records (2006's "Transcendental" and 2008's "Delusions") UK dark progressive metallers To-Mera now return with the "Earthbound" EP presenting four new cuts. 'Mesmerized', 'Earthbound', 'Arcane Solace' and 'Another World'. 'Arcane Solace' is easily the stand out cut as it mixes abrasive progressive metal choppings with Julie Kiss' sensual vocals and light Oriental melodies, soothing jazz parts and enchanting keyboard lines. Recorded with Jaime Gomez-Arellano at Zed One Studios and Orgone Studios "Earthbound" comes with a pristine production that can easily compete with their label released efforts. The first release not to feature artwork by the esteemed Eliran Kantor (Aghora, Sigh, Master, Testament) instead frontwoman Julie Kiss has provided this EP with its artwork. This stopgap EP is ideal to bridge the gap until their next full length will be released. The 4 tracks of this EP prove that To-Mera is willing to expand upon their sound and is not afraid to evolve."

Metal Storm:

"To-Mera's music is generally not easily accessible. From the first demo To-Merahas required a considerable effort to get into the vibe. If you picture their music as a steep hill that's hard to climb on its own even when employing four-limb drive, it was made harder to grasp by someone throwing rocks at you from the top of the hill. It required a fair amount of concentration to listen to them. Now the band are back with the new EP called Earthbound.

From the first riffs you can hear that music sounds different. The steep hill is there alright but someone flinging rocks down at you has gone out to lunch. The music has calmed a bit, lost some of the edges and corners and become generally smoother. You can still find heavy riffs and changing song structures that have already become familiar on Transcendental and Delusions, and Julie's vocals still soar over the music making you navigate two changing currents at the same time when listening.

However, it's the calmer parts where you can hear the changes that have taken place in the line-up after Delusions was released. When I listened toEarthbound I was taken by surprise how good those calm parts sounded. Jazzy interludes have been previously present but they have been more like breathers in-between the turmoil. Those jumps are still there but more noticeable, smoother and maybe more prog rock like with a better blend of keyboards and guitars. The new keyboard player Richard Henshall has added quite a bit in general to the background keyboard sound.

I don't know where To-Mera are heading with their music. I don't think they know it themselves as this EP is more of an interlude to unload the ideas. However, I do like the current approach. Blending their generally harsh-toned music more with melodic elements from jazz/fusion and prog rock, elaborating more on such brief encounters of the past seems to unveil more of the band's musicianship and song-writing skills. Solo spots in "Earthbound" and "Arcane Solace" are just excellent."

Metal Team UK:

"Since last album ‘Delusions’ it has not all been plain sailing for To Mera, bassist Lee Barrett left and the band found themselves no longer on Candlelight records. However self-released status or not these new tracks see them very much regrouped and back in action. Joining them on bass is Mark Harrington of Demagogue and Lost Legion both very different but solid UK acts. Also joining is Richard Henshall on keyboards from progressive metal band Haken.
Progressive is very much the word to use with both the last album and the new material. This is not instantly evident however on the first of these four numbers ‘Mesmerised.’ Rich in melody the track furrows a path as the instrumentation ploughs in only to mellow out as Julie Kiss comes in and soulfully sings away. There are nuances within the guitar department that suggest a progressive air but for the most part the song plays it pretty straight and flows along with a demeanour that is quite easy to get into and follow. The next 3 do anything but, and twist and turn at every conceivable point making me scratch my head at times in downright bewilderment. There is a lot of clever and technical musicianship on display here and this is what I can only describe as ‘deep prog’ in style. The title track shudders in bass and drum heavy with the keyboards weaving away. As the vocals come in and everything drops out letting them breathe one is reminded almost of jazz rather than anything else, perhaps jazz mixed with Cynic when the instrumentation booms back in. Tinkling 70s lounge keyboards and smoky hazy music plays around with the vocals accentuating the heady flow, to be honest it makes me feel quite stoned just listening to it.
The songs are long too, with the four numbers weighing in just short of the half hour mark, there is plenty going on here and it’s easy to lose yourself in it. Around the half way point of ‘Arcane Solace’ things get seriously heavy with lurching and juddering bass work, a piano canter of the sort that one would normally associate Tom chasing Jerry in a cartoon and then some delirious guitar noodling. This is beard stroking overload and it really illustrates the skills of the musicians, again faultlessly backed up by the singer.
This is stylistically a lot heavier than the normal proggy stuff I listen to but that has not stopped me enjoying it at all. The band always suggested they were going to explore further into more eclectic realms and simple female fronted pop rock style pigeonholing is not in the slightest bit valid here. Not sure where that leaves them in their search for a record label as this is not exactly easily accessible and it would probably take someone like Inside Out or another label deeply committed to this style to pick them up, whatever happens in the future though I am sure it will be interesting."

Metalobsession.net:

Among the myriad of female fronted bands that have sprung forth in recent years, I can honestly say that To-Mera have been one of my personal favourites after I bought their self-titled demo in 2005. In no small part this was due to their progressive outlook and challenging music which gave the band a different edge to the gothic metal crowd in which they were often unjustly placed.
After building on their initial promise via two fine albums on Candlelight Records, ‘Transcendental’ in 2006 and ‘Delusions’ last year, To-Mera and the label have mutually agreed to go their separate ways. As a result this new four song release ‘Earthbound’ is their first offering as a free agent and it also incorporates two new members into the fold.
To-Mera’s music has always been complex with vocal melodies that can be quite atypical and the resulting songs are not structured in a fashion that will give instant gratification. Instead, a few listens will enable the music to truly reveal itself so persistence truly pays off and you can’t help being impressed with the actual musicianship on display though it never quite descends into overly progressive territory.
Opening track ‘Mesmerised‘ opens proceedings on an up tempo note and is surprisingly catchy whilst the subsequent title track is almost schizophrenic in delivery as it alternates between heavy rhythms and a laid back, almost jazzy, feel particularly in the soloing mid way through. ‘Arcane Solace‘, which I would nominate as my favourite song overall, is based around great heavy guitar work and sections that really demonstrate the collaborative talents of all involved while closer “Another World” gradually builds itself up to finish the CD off in a strong fashion.
The interesting thing about To-Mera is their ability to blend a myriad of different styles into a coherent whole and it is safe to say that if you enjoyed the aforementioned releases then there is really nothing to fear from ‘Earthbound’. It represents a continuation of all of the elements that made them stand out in the past whilst demonstrating to all and sundry that To-Mera are far from done. On the other hand, if you are not familiar with To-Mera and like your metal on the more challenging side then ‘Earthbound’ is as good a place as any to initiate yourself to this excellent band.
