Current mood:  contemplative

As I was driving home today, I heard Conway Twitty's song 'That's My Job'.  I hadn't heard it in a long time, so it caught me off guard.  For those who haven't heard it, it's about a father and what he does for a boy - then a man - in their lives together.  Of course, I cried the whole way home.  It got me thinking about my Dad.  As most of you know, due to circumstances, I missed my Dad for several years in my life.  I'm very sad for these lost years.  But, I count myself very lucky.  I've had the good fortune of knowing him both as a child and as an adult.  My two sisters have not been so lucky.  When he left, my younger sister was still pretty young.  She lost a lot of the 'childhood' years.  My older sister didn't even get to meet him until she was well into her adulthood.  Anyway, this song got me thinking about what a wonderful Dad I have.  All three of us girls are so very lucky to be able to call him 'Daddy'.  I don't know what I'd do without him.

He and I have had so many good times together.  He's a pretty early riser.  When I was young, I'd wake up to some movie on in the living room, God-awful loud.  I'd stumble my way out of my room to find Dad reclining in his easy chair watching something like Batman.  (The good ones, with Michael Keaton in them.) He'd look over at me and say something like 'Oh, your up.'  I'd think, of course I'm up you psyco!  You've got this movie playing at an un-natural volume!  But, in actuallity, I sure did love those mornings.  It was just me and him for a few hours.  Just enjoying each other's company.  I loved watching him cook.  I learned a lot just by watching.  :o)  Not often, but sometimes, he would pull out one of his guitars and play a little.  He'd even sing for us.  That was certainly my idea of heaven.  He played and sang songs that were old to him, but brand new to me.  I still don't know any other version than the ones he sang to me.  If I ever heard the original artist, I'd think - Hey, they're singing Dad's song!  I wish he'd play more often.

Now, that got me thinking about all of the other 'Daddy's' in my life.  I have a wonderful stepdad to be very thankful for.  He is always there for me, even though I am no longer a child - he still treats me like one - his.  I have two Papa's.  Papa Claude, who has left us, and Papa Murray.  Papa Murray is thankfully still with us.  These two men have made such a difference in the way I live my life and what I count as important.

Call it post-pregnancy hormones, but this got me thinking about MORE Daddy's.  The new ones.  Now, Darryl will have to live up to the expectations set forth by the Daddy's in my life.  Pretty big shoes to fill, but he is doing so with gusto, love, understanding, and patience.  (Patience with both his crazy, hormonal wife and his adorable-perfect-in-every-way son.)

So, thank you Daddy's - Dad, Don, Papa Claude, Papa Murray.  Let's not forget the new ones - Darryl, Andrew, Adam, Jason, and yet another Jason!  All of us ladies, sons, daughters, and friends love you. As your lives as Daddy's move forward, think of all the little things you're doing.  One day, the simplest of things may just end up being one of your child's favorite memories.

This is a calling. A calling to see if you people out there know who made music what it really is. If you opened this, you must name a band who played within this great era of music. Doesn't matter if they started, stopped, or lasted through this time period as long as they existed in the 80's. Let's see if we can reach a 100 80's bands. Think hard and NO REPEATS. A lot of effort has been put into this list. Ray put BAD BRAINS. Eric listed the DEAD KENNEDYS. How cool is that? Choose to prove once and for all that there is more to the 80's than the soundtrack to the Wedding Singer.

April 26, 2007 - Thursday

Yesterday, one of the greatest men I have ever met passed away.  For those of you who didn't know Claude Turnbow (and for those of you who did), I have a few things I want to share with you.  Papa was the definition of a good family man.  He believed in and lived strong family values his entire life.  His legacy is his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  When he was younger, Papa told my dad that you can work your whole life to live on top of that mountain.  But if you don't have your family, life isn't worth living.  I remember the very day my dad had that same conversation with me. I was 15.  He said that people and things will come and go thru my entire life.  The only thing that is constant, that you can depend on, is your family.  That message was burned into my soul as it had been burned into his.  I know that my children will have that same pride and respect in their souls because of what one father said to his son decades before.  It's amazing how a few words spoken so long ago can shape so many lives.  I know that every member of my family will read this and know exactly what I am talking about.  Their souls burn with Papa's wisdom and love, just as mine does.  We will all cry for Papa, for the rest of our lives.  Something great and good has been taken from us.  I feel robbed, like someone took something infinitely precious from me.  Our precious Papa has been taken from us, but he has left us a gift.  He has left us each other.  I love my cousins like they are my brothers and sisters.  It's so sad when I talk to people that don't even remember their cousin's names.  We are so lucky to have each other.  We will be each other's strength.  When one of us comes close to breaking, we'll just be reminded by the others of all the blessings we have.  Papa lived a long full life.  Weeks before, we had a family reunion; a giant party with all of our family.  Who is blessed with that before they go?  Just days before he passed, he finally got to meet his long lost granddaughter.  I feel, that on that day, his life was complete.  Who could ask for more in a life?  I know I'm rambling, but I feel so strongly about him and the family he created.  Life was good.  It still is.  We just have one more hug and hello to give at the Gate of Heaven. He'll be there.  I love you all.  Thanks for reading my rambling.  I feel a little better.

April 14, 2007 - Saturday

This may come as a shock to some of you, so please take a seat.  If you begin to feel dizzy or faint, try breathing into a paperbag.  Okay, are you ready?  There are not 2, but 3 Turnbow Sisters.  There, the secret is out.  I'll give you a moment to digest this new info and compose yourselves...........Let's continue.  Most people don't know this, but my Dad has a child from a previous marriage, many many years ago.  Her name is Monique.  We've always know about her but have been unable to find her.  Well, she found us!  We found out just days before the wedding that she had contacted Dad.  It's been a very exciting time for us getting to know each other over the phone and myspace (God bless the internet!)  We finally met in person today when Monique flew in fom California.  Very crazy, emotional, fun day.  I just wanted to share this story with you and explain the whole 'new sister' thing.  I'll be sure to keep you updated and hopefully we'll be seeing a lot more of all 3 Turnbow Sisters!

April 4, 2007 - Wednesday
We're back!! Our trip was fantastic!  We visited Disneyland, San Diego Wild Animal Park, Universal Studios, Sea World, and Newport Beach!  We are so exhausted!  Here are just a few of the pictures we took.  Special mention for the Safari park....AWESOME SHIT!  If you ever get to go there, make sure you get the Deluxe package.  It costs a small fortune, but is well worth it.  This is the only place in the world where you can actually feed and touch live Rhinos!  Don't forget you get to feed giraffes, too.  We were also able to see the oldest rhinos alive (44yrs old), the tallest giraffe in captivity (18ft), and 3 of the last 9 remaining Northern White Rhinos in the world (very sad story).  When they say Disneyland is the 'happiest place on Earth', they aren't pulling your leg.  I've been to Disney twice and each time I was amazed at how nice both the staff and other customers are!  It's like hanging out with friends all day!  Thanks again to all of you that helped with the wedding!  You helped to make it the most beautiful ceremony/reception we could have asked for.  BJ the DJ....you rock....you know it!  We should hopefully get some wedding pictures within the next week or so.  I'll be sure to post 'em.  Thanks again everyone and we love you!

I've officially entered the last leg of the race to wedding day.  It kind of feels like a sprint towards the finish, but it is all coming together pretty well.    Everyone keeps saying things like, 'How fun!', 'you must be so excited!'....blah, blah, blah....  Well, I can't wait until it STARTS getting fun, because it's been nothing but a lot of work since I said yes!  Just kidding, I have had tons of support from my friends and family (friends/family mostly consist of the same people).  I have my Bridal Shower on Sunday, I'm REALLY excited for that!  The man who is doing my wedding cake is also doing the shower cake.  Mom told him it was his choice, so we don't even know what the cake will look like.  We are blessed enough to have many people able to attend.  My Eugene family and Darryl's mom aren't going to make it, but they'll be there in spirit.  :o)  We meet with our photographer again on March 6th.  I'm still trying to convince Darryl to let him take the photo's before the wedding.  He's very traditional and doesn't want to see me before our vows.  Hopefully we'll be able to compromise by then.  Then (drum roll please)  off to Portland for a fun filled bachlorette party with the cousins!  Nobody throws a party like a Henson (even if they now have different last names)!  I'm ready to let the 'fun' part of this wedding begin!  So, look for me, I'll be the drunk one in a white dress.
