Yay for Kiwi ukesters!
February 29, 2008 - Friday
I have been meaning to blog on this ever since I first met this fine young woman. Koru Branch is her name here on MySpace and she has QUITE the extensive selection of Kiwi bands at her own site. You can find it here.

This is a person whom I can learn a thing or two from. I look forward to getting to know her and I definitely recommend that if you haven't "met" her yet you do so.

She is doing wonderful things to promote Kiwi music in the UK and across the world.

In short, she rocks!

Current mood:basking in my alone time tonight ahhhhhh

OK I decided to continue my blog on favorite songs here... just sorta start a new one...there were some things I wanted to hyper link and I couldn't be arsed coding all the html for the links in my comment so .. well ... here's a new blog.

I have been quite busy this week.. over 60 hours logged for work...I didn't have time to discover alot of new music but I did have some great stuff on hand that sustained me throughout the week.

Songs that stood out to me this week:

Sunny  by Bobby Hebb and then Twinset's cover of it. Both are mighty fine

Not Just Knee Deep (the 1,974 minute version) - Funkadelic

Sidwalks Song - Thrift Store Cowboys

Wasn't Born to Follow - The Byrds

Simply Beautiful - Al Green

Silver - The Pixies

The Burning Flame - Ilya Monosov

Fu Manchu - Desmond Dekker

Wear Your Love Like Heaven - Donovan

California Girls - The Magnetic Fields

Decatur - Sufjan Stevens

Trouble Man - Marvin Gaye

Boogie Stop Shuffle - Charles Mingus

Hangman - Fire on Fire

There is a War - Leonard Cohen

Summer - Age Pryor (I will soon own the album thanks to Slow Boat)

Streams:

The Phoenix Foundation live at The Opera House can be found here (yes they will always make an appearance in my lists).

Albums:

Robert Scott - I recently acquired some CDs sold by Bob Scott. His "Songs from Otago's Past" is sweet as (there ya go Kiwi pals...I am using the slang ;-) ) Also "The Clean Live at the Vic Theatre Chicago" is excellent. He sells his music and does his own album covers so check out his page by clicking on his name.

David Kilgour- One of my new found friends in Dunedin sent me David Kilgour's "The Far Now" along with that was included "Orange Feathers". Both are great. Al Haig does a great job on these albums as well. (Al if you are reading...onya!)

Miles Davis - The Birth of the Cool has been in heavy rotation during the evening hours as I cook and clean and help the kids with homework.

I don't know that I can answer this question.

For example, I will take a notion to create a playlist on Media Player and say ok I am going to put my top 20 favorite songs of all time on this list. Before its finished I usually end up with over 700 songs on the list.

Anyone else have this problem?

I mean have you ever noticed how incredibly difficult it is to really "choose" what you like best?

Just wondering what other's think.

And yet another music related blog post....OK so I am blogging quite a bit lately (two posts in as many days).  This one however will be the most shocking thing you will ever hear from me (for those of you who actually know me that is. So Kelen, Samson and Amanda, this will come as a shock to you).

I have converted over from loathing Pink Floyd to liking them. Yes liking. I can't get carried away here and go and say I love them so for now, I am content in saying like.

Someone suggested I check out Piper at the Gates of Dawn, I did, and that was the first step towards conversion. I won't go into the details of why this album is a masterpiece because I am not well equipped to speak in musical terms so just take my word for it. It's sweet, and a must have.

Now coupled with Piper at the Gates of Dawn, I recently watched a Pink Floyd documentary that was mistakenly recorded on my DVR. I had it set to record something else but I whatever was scheduled for that time slot wasn't aired. In place of that was a Pink Floyd documentary. I suppose then I have to attribute this to destiny.

I watched the documentary, and was met with a sense of humility. All these years I have railed against the Floyd for being grandiose, over-the-top, pretentious wankers because when I was a teenager all I ever heard about was their ridiculous stage productions of concerts. I wrongfully drew the parallel between their concerts and tasteless Broadway productions and I suppose I never got past that. Also, the people that I knew who liked Pink Floyd tended to be grandiose over-the-top pretentious wankers so I just assumed birds of a feather…

Ok so the documentary featured all the members of the band (sans Syd Barrett) speaking to the creative process behind their albums.  I was amazed at how these men heard music in everything - from chiming clocks, to a cash register, to a chorus of mumbles. I realized they heard music in the least little thing. They were and are musicians in the truest sense of the word. It was humbling.

I know that if anyone actually reads this blog, and has loved Pink Floyd for years, you are thinking I am a bit of a moron for being so late to the party. To this I concede.

I still can't promise I will come around to loving them, but liking them will have to suffice for now.

Current mood:really crappy and angry

Last night when I finally laid down for bed at the ungodly hour of 3:22 am, I flipped through the channels to find something that would put my mind at rest. I had a really rough night last night but I won't even get into the details as to why.

At any rate as I was flipping through the channels I came across this wonderful little program on Public Television called Woodsongs.

On three hours of sleep, I don't know how I managed to remember this today, but I did and I searched for it and found the Website. I reckon I am a little behind the times here because it seems this show is an established one.

I found their site which has an incredible archive of American folk music. It seems there are issues with streaming the video (that could be on my end though), but the MP3s are working. Anyway to find out more about this show you can go
here.

What really caught my attention on the particular episode I saw, was a performer called Kaki King.  Please take the time to watch the video below. This woman is amazing! She makes me woefully aware of my on shortcomings in guitar playing so I should probably loathe her. No can do... She is brilliant. Watch and see!

Sod it... I can't embed the video into the blog... ok so follow
this link to see her on YouTube... you won't regret it!!

I can not believe it. I haven't held a guitar in my hand for quite some time and even when I did, I only strummed it pathetically.

So last night, during all that was going on at this phenominal party I attended (Amanda S. if you are reading this, girl, thank you again. I had TOO much fun!), the host of the party was playing his grand piano. I picked up a guitar and he said "can you play?" I said, no, I mean... I only know a few chords. So he asked what chords I knew, I told him, and he said that's enough. So we proceeded to play a standard blues progression for about  6 minutes. Chord changes flowed smoothly and I even picked here and there. I have to say it was a highlight of my evening, and most certainly an excellent way to begin the new year.

I had never before played guitar with anyone. I had never created sound in tandem with another musician. I am not a musician by any stretch, but technically speaking I was one last night. It felt great!

I love music so very much, and have in the past found myself in tears at my not being able to play as I wished I could. Last night however reminded me of what amazing joy there is to be had in making music.

If there are any musicians reading this blog, I want to thank you. What you do is so important and I love you all for doing it. You inspire me to play (even though I will forever remain sucky) and you fill my life with such happiness.

I love you guitarists, keyboardists, drummers, bassists, woodwind players.... or even if you play a tin can with a spoon, if you rock it, then keep on doin' it! I love you all!
