Doug Sahm Tribute

Antone's, Thursday, March 19

Doug Sahm never stood in one place for too long as this two-hour
tribute demonstrated. The man defined Texas music, which meant rock,
Tex-Mex, blues, jazz, and country intermingled, and it still makes
perfect sense. Jimmie Vaughan led off the night swinging,
especially on the horn-driven "Why Why Why," the 1950s-style soul track
he lends to the upcoming Sahm tribute disc, Keep Your Soul. Sir Doug's country rock side was covered by the Gourds and a lively "Nuevo Laredo," but the fire was lit when son Shawn Sahm & the Tex-Mex Experience
hit the stage with a dancing take of "Adios Mexico." The younger Sahm's
a spitting image of his father in many ways, one of them being a
talkative stage presence that kept things lively during set changes. Dave Alvin joined in, aided by Cindy Cashdollar
and her steel guitar, for "Dynamite Woman." "When I was young, I wanted
to be Doug Sahm when I grew up," Alvin claimed. "Tonight I get to
pretend." There were left-field appearances as well, one by local blues
guitar wunderkind Jake Andrews (with Keep Your Soul producer Bill Bentley on drums), and Massachusetts country rocker Sarah Borges. Those that stuck it out were rewarded with a blowout of a finale as all the living members of the Texas TornadosAugie Meyers, Flaco Jimenez, Ernie Durawa, and Speedy Sparks
– joined for a mini set of their greatest hits, right down to the
Freddy Fender nod "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights." It was the kind of
raucous celebration that Doug Sham would have loved, tempered with the
knowledge that he left a legacy of great music and a world full of
memories that many of us still miss.

2008-09 Austin Music Awards Show

Austin Music Hall, Wednesday, March 18

Chet Flippo once wrote in these pages that the true essence of the
cosmic cowboy was Doug Sahm onstage at the Soap Creek Saloon, leather
fringe flaring under his cowboy hat, Lone Star Beer flowing freely. The
history of Austin is inscribed in these iconic moments, a city drafted
on the sounds coursing through the streets. From the Vulcan Gas
Company's psychedelic ground zero on Congress Avenue to punk haven
Raul's on the Drag, clubs come and go, but the music is stamped
indelibly upon the very soul of the live music capital.

Every year the Austin Music Awards call forth those spirits,
threading their frequencies into the sonic fabric of the present. In
addition to celebrating Doug Sahm's defining Tex-Mex groove and the
Dicks' three-decade role in defining Austin punk, the 27th installment
of the AMAs set up Sixth Street's protean champion Bob Schneider with
teen sensations the Fireants and brought Roky Erickson to bear on his
contemporary psych inheritors, the Black Angels. If the Dicks set invoked the fury of Austin, the tribute to Doug Sahm
led by his son Shawn represented the fun. Hearkening his father in
looks and groove, Sahm's band, the Tex-Mex Revolution, was joined by
familiar Sir Doug compatriots such as Augie Meyers and Ernie Durawa.
The border-crossing stomp of "Nuevo Laredo" melded with the Meyers-led
Texas Tornados classic "(Hey Baby) Que Paso" and the crowd favorite
"She's About a Mover." It was Musician and Songwriter of the Year
Alejandro Escovedo's rendition of "Too Little Too Late," backed once
again by the Fireants, that stole the set.

Revolutionary Ways

Marcia Ball doesn't remember the last time she played with Freda & the Firedogs, her progressive-country outfit that was produced by Atlantic Records' Jerry Wexler and backed Doug Sahm upon his return from the Bay Area in the early 1970s (see "Nowhere but Texas," Dec. 13, 2002). Nevertheless, the cosmic quintet gathered last Saturday at Joe Gracey's Spicewood studio to cut Sahm's "Be Real" in homage to the original Texas Tornado for Keep Your Soul: A Tribute to Doug Sahm. The Lone Star-studded compilation, due in late March through Vanguard Records, features a stellar stable of local talent, including Jimmie Vaughan ("Why, Why, Why"), Alejandro Escovedo ("Too Little Too Late"), the Gourds ("Nuevo Laredo"), and Terry Allen with Joe Ely ("I'm Not That Kat Anymore"), while co-producer Shawn Sahm covered "Mendocino" with Augie Meyers for the occasion. "If you start with an artist that was really inspired, the rest tends to follow," opines co-producer and Chronicle scribe emeritus Bill Bentley, whose previous tributes to Roky Erickson (Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye) and Moby Grape's Alexander "Skip" Spence (More Oar) rank among the all-time best of the genre and helped bring both artists long overdue critical and cultural recognition.
