Aoi - Breakdance at tiffany's Aoi is an experiment beat maker from Cairns. He spent some time in Brisbane, but now resides in sunny Melbourne. Sitting somewhere between the New York sound of the def jux label and the psychedelic bangers of LA artists like Madlib (stones throw), Aoi is a beat nerd. The live sets I've seen are technical and creative. not unlike some of the more inspired DJ sets I've witnessed. This guy really needs to collaberate with some of his favourite US rappers to make some original tracks. Peep at the spotwelders re-mixtape and you'll agree that this guy should have beats on the next ghostface album.

Jack of all trades, master of none artist Matthew Johnson (?) tries his hand at an intriguing variety of electronica mixed with ambient, breaks, noise, chillcore, and a whole bunch of stuff which no one in their right mind would attempt to define. The thing is though, it works... and quite well we might add. Shifting from Twilight Zone-esque soundscapes to Ratatat vs Monster Zoku Onsomb! style ditties, Aoi breaks the mould of the current raft of electronica acts emerging on the scene. The evening will be a night filled with original, somewhat groundbreaking material as the Melbourne lad teams up with local cutting-edge genre-defying maestro Lawrence English (the guy who runs the ::ROOM40:: events), so if you're feeling experimental, Ric's will provide the perfect midweek entertainment.

Fans of West Coast style - THC strength character, brainy arrangements, episodic movement, game loving bounce - are put on immediate need-to-know basis with two new releases by Melbourne's Aoi. Available free, source direct from the author, Low Tracks Era and Spotwelders Vol. 1. pack production clout and musicality enough to empty whole shelves of industry-sanctioned hip-hop; both literally - by repurposing the good stuff as samples - and retroactively - by showing up so much conventionally released, Kangaroo-hop as BS.
Hybridizing the dope-chamber nod and sunny rolls of Stones Throw, an ear for nimble electronica and atmospheric, fanboy feel of games and horror movies, Low Tracks Era is 50 minutes of seamless, instrumental jams moving across psych-chug landscapes, dark funk, spaced-out synths, vinyl crackle and dusted beat collage. 'Skruffle' is an MDMA desert drive, 'Decades of Rust' beats Caribou's next move and 'Tin Crown' is gas-masked harpsicord freakbeat.
Spotwelders Vol. 1 is different altogether - a mix disc of known emcees over Aoi beats that's more party-orientated. Checkout both at Aoi's complimentary beats emporium and travel goods. FRESH.
