Dear Friends,

Almost a year and a half has passed since I wrote my previous post on MySpace, and now I'm back, to write about the same thing - that, in essence, I'm not checking MySpace anymore.

Why?

There are at least a few reasons: For one, our son, Benjy, was born at the very beginning of July. He's an amazing kid, and as you can see by the picture, he can't stop smiling - unless he's hungry, of course.  As you can imagine, parenting takes up pretty much everything that used to be known as "free time".

For another reason, life simply became much busier. At this moment, I'm writing scores for two feature films, a short, and a number of concert pieces... There's a lot of writing to do, and I can't listen to music while writing it!.. I wish the opposite were true, but talk radio is my limit.. :)

When I'm not writing, I'm almost always either in a rehearsal, recording, or strolling with the baby.

And finally, I think that the social networking aspect of MySpace has pretty much gone to pieces and become incredibly irrelevant. What does it mean to become a "Friend"? When I once told my accordionists that my friend "friended me on MySpace yesterday", he had a great laugh. As did we all.

Each day, I get 10-15 "friend requests" -- but it almost seems as if half of those were made by an auto-pilot adder program, because the comments seem very generic, or the band's music is so completely in a different direction from ours. To be sure, a few of the friend requests each day are genuine, and I'm grateful for all of them... But on the whole, I'd be much happier with an email to my regular email.

There was a time, about 3-4 years ago, when MySpace was an extremely potent vehicle for connecting musicians with new listeners and friends. Everyone in the music world big and small jumped in and posted profiles, songs, blogs. For a time, you could get a record deal and get booked in solid venues, simply based on your MySpace friend or play count.

I have personally made many meaningful and long-lasting friendships through MySpace in its early days.  I used to listen to music on MySpace for an hour or two a day.  Those were deliriously happy days.

However, now the beast has grown too big. Out of 16,000 friends, I have personally communicated with 300 - at most -- and most of that was done a long time ago.  MySpace has never been an effective means of communication, whether you have 16,000 friends or 30. Competition from Facebook and LinkedIN has made MySpace update their interface a bit, but I still have no access to a database of our fans, I cannot group them by regions; I cannot check MySpace email on my phone, which pretty much means that I get to read MySpace once a month at maximum, given my current workload...

Because of this, I've been forced to bite the bullet and let MySpace "approve" all of my friends automatically from now on. This probably sounds apocalyptic and hilarious at the same time, and it's meant to be.  Given that MySpace's friend requests expire after 30 days, I ended up disappointing people left and right when I don't approve them in due time -- and if I did get to approve anyone, it was usually in a mad flurry, trying to deal with 300+ requests in one shot...  I haven't had a chance to listen to a song on MySpace in the past 2 years, at least.

MySpace is still great for having a 1-page website with a few songs and performance dates, and I still plan to update the songs when new ones are ready. (I'm already updating the show dates via ArtistData).

At any rate, please excuse the extended post, and thank you for reading it.

I love to hear from friends & fans alike, always and often.
If you would like to get in touch -- please find me on twitter.com/ljovadotcom
or please email me directly.
I can't guarantee an immediate response, but it will be much faster than emailing me on MySpace.

Thank you so much!

Enjoy the music,

warmly,
Ljova

Hi Friends!

I am blessed to have a gloriously growing MySpace community of 12,500+ friends & fans worldwide, and my music is being featured on quite a few of those pages. I'm deeply grateful to all of you for spreading the word and enjoying the tracks.

However, because of the way MySpace functions, I have no clue where any of you are located (so we could try to schedule shows near you), when some of you are featuring my music on your pages(so I could thank you personally), and anything else you'd like me to be aware of. Because of this, won't you please do me a huge favor, and drop me a line at my official website, and/or join the Ljova & the Kontraband page on Reverbnation.

Specifically to the NEW friends: I get quite a few friend requests daily, and given the current schedule, I am only able to spend 20 minutes a day -- at most -- updating MySpace. As such, if you'd like for me to visit your page, please put a short note where MySpace allows you to, when making your friend request. Please also let me know if you're featuring my music.

Thank you all for your friendship and support! Looking forward to meeting all of you one day, and staying in touch.
All the best,

Ljova

Greetings and Happy New Year to one and all!

After 15,000 spins on MySpace, and in the spirit of doing something for the New Year, I decided to retire the track "Plume", and replace it with "Mahlergasse", an unreleased track I recorded earlier in 2007. Some may notice that "Mahlergasse" has a lot in common with "Plume" (it's in the same key + meter, and with the same instrumentation of multitracked violas).

"Mahlergasse" also shares a common history with "Untango", as both were themes I composed for the film "Serpent's Breath". After some deliberation, the director (Michael DiPaolo) and I decided that "Untango" was a better direction for the film.

"Mahlergasse" refers to a tiny street in Vienna (Austria), just off of the square leading to the beautiful opera house. It was named after the composer Gustav Mahler, who lived and conducted in Vienna for many years, creating a firestorm of controversy and beautiful music. If you ever walk there at dusk, try to remember this track, and hum it along to yourself.

Have a great happy new year, enjoy the track, and please stay in touch for more music.

Yours,
Ljova

Dear Friends on MySpace,

Happy holidays!

My sincere apologies for not having updated my MySpace Blog in almost a year. Things have been happening at an alarming pace, and I've barely had enough time to update my own website.

If you want to stay in the loop about upcoming performances of my music, and screenings of films I've scored, then please drop me a line at http://Ljova.com/contact -- that is the sole best way to reach me, and I will respond as promptly as I can. That way, you'll be the first to know.

For those who want to read blog updates, please see my blog at http://theSoupASonic.livejournal.com

Thank you for your support, and for listening to music from my MySpace page. I'll have more music up here, soon.

Very best,

Ljova

Hi friends -- I've put up a new track on MySpace, titled "Heat Me Up", but it's not playing yet - I've no idea why (i've re-uploaded it twice)... but hopefully it'll be streaming soon. It's quite a departure from things you hear presently on this page...

...In the meanwhile, I'd love to draw your undivided attention to my Eventful DEMAND site, linked on my MySpace page, and also below.

I'm hoping to put together a tour in the summer of 2007 and would love to meet as many of you as possible. I know from MySpace that I have fans outside of the New York area, especially in Colorado, Wisconsin, California, Missouri and Hawaii. We also have many friends in the greater Europe.

Please use this link to let me know that you'd like me to come to your town. You can meet likeminded active fans this way, and I hope to meet in person, and play for you soon!

Enjoy the music + best,
---Ljova

Friends - the unimaginable has happened - my little independent debut CD (which you can buy here) just received a review in the New York Times (Sunday Arts & Leisure section) by the critic Allan Kozinn.

Read the New York Times review here:

Last weekend, the CD was featured on the NPR program "Weekend America", a podcast of which you can listen to and download here. The podcast is especially delightful.

Enjoy!

Loved the World Cup? Want to see more soccer? How about the HOMELESS WORLD CUP?!
Ljova has recently completed an original score to a wonderfully zany documentary film called "THE TEAM". Produced by the BBC, and directed by James Marsh and Basia Winograd, it follows the triumphs and failures of a group of homeless New Yorkers, who are recruited to compete at the Homeless Soccer World Cup in Graz, Austria. The soundtrack features "Plume" from Ljova's debut CD, as well as music written especially for the film.
