Agendumb by The Sess is on the 94.9 fm & M-Theory recommended list for the month! If you don't already have a copy you have no idea what you are missing out on.
Wild in the streets. Erratic and unprofessional. Jaded and enthusiastic rantings of a menace to pop culture. Anti-plastic. Wild sounds. Maximum resistance. Hardcore Noise and Soul.
Once again it's been awhile since I've posted anything. I was in a living situation that wasn't condusive to the kind of relaxed environment I require to work on this thing. But I'm in my own apartment now in the french quarter and I'm happy to be relaxed here and sharing some sounds I'm digging. The Sess, AgendumbSingle Screen RecordsHoly shit this is one powerful work. These guys are not pulling any punches and have given us an album that is a rollercoaster ride of aurally delicious garage hooks, technical twists and turns. This is rock and roll as a weapon. The guitar and bass melodies are jumping out my tiny desktop speakers like an army of bees and wasps. I cannot wait to hear this shit loud on a car stereo or on the sytem at the club. I imagine it sounding like The Who at Pearl Harbor. If the world doesn't blow up in 2012, this record could go down in history as one of the best punk records ever.

the sess(myspace)
Technology has made it easier and harder for local bands. Easier in that you can network from your couch, in that you can sell your cd from your couch, etc. Technology has made it harder because there are now so many bands out there vying for attention from a limited audience and even the audience it reaches is guaranteed to have its attention diverted in seconds. So in the end advances in technology are a wash for non established acts, but the benchmarks towards viability remain the same: record a full length, tour outside your home market, get a booking agent, a manager, etc.
It is with great pleasure that I received my copies of the Sess's debut full length recording on Single Screen Records. Entitled "Agendumb," this record is a proud document of a scene on the brink of moving from a burst of myspace inspired energy to something more sustained. In 2007 San Diego produced three rock acts that drew attention outside the area: Grand Ole Party, Delta Spirit & The Muslims. However none of those groups produced a record with the inspiration and peculiar genius of the Sess. Part rock, part punk and part stoner experimentalism, Agendumb transcends the "local music" label and emerges as a record of true excellence, a record that deserves every sale it gets.
After the brief introduction of "Abraxas," the band launches the first of several terrific songs. "I don't need nothing," Sam sings to open, sheep City, and when he says that, he speaks for an audience of rock fans everywhere. The theme of life outside the margins continues on another album stand out, their cover of the Remains "Don't Look Back." In both songs the Sess explore themes of despair and hope with music that bounces from rhythmic certitude to anarchic noise confusion.
With the exception of the intro and the seven minute capper- Tunnel Love, the Sess have channeled their more experimental tendencies into a familiar garage/punk/rock idiom. Ultimately, the constraint/restraint serves them well and is a sign of growing maturity as artists and pop musicians.
Perhaps it's more accurate to talk about their playfulness, rather then experimentalism. On "Silly for Sirius" the bass line lurches like something out of a Captain Beefheart record and Sam's singing voice switches from exhortation to crooning. Each song hints at a tantalizing future of influences unexplored and songs yet to be written.
The Sess have done more then put out a record- they put out a great record. "Agendumb" should be recognized for its greatness. I commend my readers to obtain a copy and give it their full attention.

Sometimes a band comes around that makes me feel like a kid again. In the way that I experience the same wonderment I felt when I first started to discover the sounds of the underground. When finding The Ramones End of The Century in my stepsister's record collection was the kind of discovery that could change the entire course of my life. To this day, rock and roll remains the most exciting thing I've ever encountered in this world, and I'm excited about The Sess (pronounced Se-sh).
Last Sunday I popped into The Pink Elephant in North Park to catch a matinee show that had caught my interest upon the recommendation of the two people who have turned me onto more awesome music than anyone or anything else in my life. The Sess took the stage and they took me by surprise, bursting straight out of the cacophonous swirl of warm up noise straight into a tight, spectacular, harmonious powerpop blitzkreig that had me grinning and bouncing on my toes. I was frantic with excitement. Discovery!
The San Diego quintet isn't trying to reinvent rock and roll and yet their honest interpretation of it has a freshness that gives their music a unique sound. I kept feeling like I was hearing something familiar, but there was no distinct derivation in it. The music was simply evocative of the feeling one gets when they hear music that's amazing and perfect. Like discovering The Saints's Eternally Yours, Jonathan Fire Eater's Wolf Songs for Lambs, Brian Eno's Here Come the Warm Jets, Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation, or Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak for the first time. I thought, "This shit is genius."
Or is it?
The music is definitely devoid of pretense. And I don't think The Sess are even caught up in caring if their music is genius or not. I think they're just happy writing honest, catchy rock and roll that feels good to play, because it feels right.
I wonder if this band knows just how good they are, or if they mask this knowledge with a guise of humbleness that makes them that much more appealing. After experiencing their show I was enamored. I wanted to meet them, to make sure they know just how important what they're doing is to people like me who make rock and roll their religion. I must have come across like some starstruck teenage girl, a potential obsessed fan turned stalker. Their set was like a shot of pure adrenaline to me and I was bouncing off the walls.
With a band like The Sess, it's as if they're tapped into some secret something that most bands, sadly, will never realize. They are enlightened. They're in the club.
