Heart Tattoos....

"These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts." (Deuteronomy 6:6)....

Someone getting a tattoo, especially for the first time, will spend months, sometimes years agonizing over what to get, how big to get it, and where to have it inked. And why not? It can be a lifetime decision, right?....

Most of us are way less careful about what to put on our hearts. In fact, a lot of us just hold our hearts up in the air, waiting for something or someone to come along to hand it over to. We're ready to cover our hearts with the names of boy/girlfriends, bands, sports teams - whatever ignites a little passion.....

Solomon warned us to guard our hearts, because we have just the one life. And here, God gives us something worth inking on our hearts: His commands. It's one of the ways we love Him with all of us.....

Think:
-Have you ever let someone into your heart too easily?
-Have you ever given your mind, will, and emotions over to something that turned out to be a waste of time (or, worse, really hurtful)?
-How can you put God's commands on your heart?....

Pray: Ask God to help you to put His commands for you on your heart.....

Do: Make a quick list of the top 5 things on your heart today.

lenten journal: jesus goes postal

I’ve been struggling with a story today.

“Jesus cleansing the Temple” is the way it usually gets titled for those of us who know the story. It shows up in all four gospels and I’ve heard it over and over; it’s not new to me. Jesus was going into the Temple in Jerusalem during Passover and saw the mall-like atmosphere that had grown up in the outer court where people could exchange money for Temple currency and buy animals for sacrifice. He made a whip out of some cords and sent the money changers and merchants running for their collective lives, leaving tables turned and everyone wondering what the hell happened.

the story begins with Jesus at the wedding at Cana, which is a story I love because of the interaction between Jesus and his mother.

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." 5His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

First, who gets away with calling his mother, “Woman”?
Second and speaking of performance criticism, wouldn’t you love to be able to hear the tone in the voices of both Jesus and Mary? Third, we get a picture of a pretty cool Messiah in this opening miracle. Drinks are on him.

A sentence later – that’s right one sentence, however much time actually passed --he’s in the Temple going off on the moneychangers like Chuck Norris on a drug dealer.

What do I do with a story where Jesus responds with violence? He made a whip out of cords, which I’m assuming was intended to be more than symbolic, and he stormed the Temple, turning over tables and chasing everyone from the sellers to the sheep out of the room. Whatever his motivation, whatever prophecy he fulfilled, he was violent and he did damage. The blessed-are-the-peacemakers-turn-the-other-cheek guy was whipping people to get his point across.

As I said, I’ve been struggling with the story.

I went back to the beginning of John and looked at the order of things once again:

  • John the Baptist points him out
  • Jesus chooses his disciples
  • the wedding at Cana
  • Jesus clears the Temple
  • Nicodemus comes to see Jesus

Chapter Four opens with Jesus’ encounter with a Samaritan woman, which is one of my favorite stories. At the end of their conversation, he told her he was the Messiah. Could it be John was giving us an account of how Jesus grew into his identity? Could he be showing us how Jesus got started and found his way to a true sense of his calling?

(By the way, these questions are not rhetorical. I’m not trying to get into a theological debate here; I’m trying to figure out what to do with a violent Messiah. This blows my mind.)

Part of my struggle is with myself. I have heard this story my whole life in church and never let myself see what troubles me about it until today. I allowed myself to be blinded by familiarity; I wasn’t looking for anything new. Jesus chased the bad guys out of the Temple, which is what good guys do. But he did it violently. This can’t be one of the go-and-do-likewise kind of stories. Had Jesus made it a pattern, he never would have gone through the Cross to the Resurrection.

Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead?
Sean McDowell

Last week I asked my students to write down the most difficult question they could imagine about God. While there were some great questions about evil, other religions, and reincarnation, the question that most caught my attention was about the historical Jesus. "In our age of science," one girl asked, "Can we really believe that Jesus died 2,000 years ago, was buried for three days, and then came back to life? And if so, what does it matter?" I told her that if she is an open-minded person who wants to follow the evidence, then she would likely find the evidence both compelling and hopeful.

The Possibility of Miracles

Some people discount the possibility of the resurrection because it is a miracle. After all, isn't the world a closed system of cause and effect? Obviously, if miracles are impossible then the resurrection must have a natural explanation (e. g. Jesus had a twin who died in his place, or the story is just a legend). But why begin with the assumption that miracles are impossible? How can we know-without some prior evidence for the non-existence of God-that miracles cannot happen? After all, if God created the world simply by speaking it into existence, then it should be easy for him to raise someone from the dead. The question of the resurrection of Jesus can only be determined by examining the evidence. Deciding ahead of time that miracles are impossible only begs the question against the resurrection. Let's allow the evidence to speak for itself.
Here are three quick facts that support the claim that Jesus rose from the dead.

FACT 1: Jesus died on the cross. The evidence for Jesus' death by crucifixion is overwhelming. First, there is the fact that all four gospels report Jesus' death. Second, the nature of the crucifixion virtually guaranteed death. Crucifixion was scientifically honed by the Romans to utterly torture victims. Third, the spear in the side reported by John (ch. 19), in which water and blood recede, is medical evidence that Jesus was dead. Fourth, there is extra-biblical evidence (Tacitus and Josephus) who report that Jesus died by crucifixion.

FACT 2: The tomb of Jesus was found empty on the third day. While there are multiple arguments for the empty tomb, let's consider one of my favorites. Amazingly, the tomb was discovered by women. In Palestine around the time of Christ women were not educated or considered reliable sources of information. In fact, Josephus reports that women could not even testify in a court of law. Thus, if the disciples simply fabricated the story of the resurrection they never would have chosen women to be the first eyewitnesses. This embarrassing account by the disciples is convincing proof that, when they wrote about the empty tomb of Jesus, they were recording truth.

FACT 3: Jesus appeared to people after his death. One of the best evidences for the appearances of Jesus is in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8. Paul recites a creed that can be traced back to within 3-5 years of the death of Jesus. Historically speaking, this is an incredibly early account. Paul records that Jesus appeared to the disciples and also to 500 people. Some claim that Jesus only appeared to his followers. But this is not true. Jesus appeared to James, who did not believe in him during his life (John 7:5). Jesus also appeared to Paul, who was persecuting Christians (Galatians 1). Some have tried to explain the appearances away as hallucinations, but hallucinations don't appear to groups (anymore than groups of people can share the same dream). The disciples were also not ripe candidates for hallucinations.

There is so much more that could be said about why the resurrection of Jesus is credible. The question we have to ask is, What explanation best accounts for all the facts? When all the facts are taken into consideration, the biblical account stands far above the rest. If you are interested in studying the topic further, you may want to check out my recent book Evidence for the Resurrection (co-written with my father, Josh McDowell).

But why does the resurrection matter? For one thing, Paul says that if Jesus did not resurrect then our faith is in vain (1 Corinthians 15:14, 17). But the resurrection also shows that God can be trusted. The disciples were utterly scared and confused at the arrest of Jesus. All of their hopes and dreams were shattered. They thought that God had abandoned them. But God never let go of the steering wheel, even when everything seemed hopeless! In fact, God was completely in charge the entire time. And the same is true for us. The resurrection tells us that God is good, God can be trusted, and that the pain and evil in the world will ultimately be redeemed for good.

Dear Jesus,

I need You today. I need Your voice, Your touch, Your direction, Your inspiration. I lift up my writing life to You, letting You hold my words in the palm of Your hand.

There are days when I feel small and incapable, when the worries stiffen my neck. Today is one of those days. Be near, Jesus, because Your nearness makes me good.

I give You my relationships--the failed ones, the joyful ones, the confusing ones, the hope-filled ones, the complicated ones, the cherished ones. Make me a better friend, son, daughter, cousin, helper.

I rest my worries with You. Forgive me for fretting, for striving, for forgetting to trust. Make me into the kind of person who runs after You, who buries her head in Your embrace when she's failed and sinned, who is quick to forgive. Deliver me from bitterness and grudges. Make me a person of hope and grace. Keep me close to You.

I am small, Lord, but You are big. May I live in such a way that You appear bigger and I smaller. You are the splendid power within me. But sometimes I live as if I had to control everything. Help me relinquish my so-called control. My life is actually for You.

Thank You for rescuing me, for loving me, for pouring into my life, for forgiving me, for healing me. I am in awe of all You've done.

Amen.

fruits of the spirit. what are they?! come to gForce tonight to learn more. for now, here's a teaser about the fruit of the spirit.

Most of the fruits of the spirit revolve around the core fruit of love
. The fruit of love is the most important fruit because we need to learn how to love in order to be able to show the other fruits. Let me give you an example, say you are planning a sleepover with your best friends. Because they are your friends, you love them right? Well, let's say you really want to watch a movie during the evening and let everyone know, but another of your friends says, "I don't want to watch a movie, that's a stupid idea!" All of a sudden you went from loving your friend to wishing your friend was not invited to the party. If you are already walking in love, things like that don't really bother you. Hopefully, you also display the fruits of patience and self-control so you don't jump down your friend's throat by saying, "I want a movie and not having a movie is the stupid idea- you fool"!! Instead you calmly say "I'd like a movie and don't think it's stupid, but if everyone else wants to do something else, that's fine with me". If you display the fruits of love, patience and self-control toward your fruitless friend, the added bonus of the fruit of joy fills you up. Yep, you get a bonus feeling of joy when you can control your feelings towards those who are rude or disrespectful to you. That's just the way God has worked it all out. Whenever we make right choices regarding our emotions and feelings and choose to display the fruit of the spirit instead of anger, pride or hate we always benefit by having a good feeling come over us.

Those that consistently walk in the fruit of the spirit begin bearing good fruit. When we see an orange tree with big beautiful oranges we expect to pull an orange off and peel the skin to find a juicy, sweet orange. But sometimes we get tricked and find that the orange is dried up or flavorless. We are the same way. Sometimes we see someone and think 'wow, that person is really involved in church and must be producing good fruit', but the bible shows us how to find out if their fruit truly is good. We are to look at a person's heart. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks(Matthew 12:34). If we stick around long enough we will realize whether their fruit is good, rotten or doesn't exist.

so... how's your fruit?

this looks long, but it's all a funny story - worth the read! hope you have a wedgie-riffic day! :)
anna <><
glc youth gal

I'm probably one of the only people on the planet whose life was actually saved by a wedgie. Seriously.
I'm not normally a big fan of wedgies. Over the years I've received hundreds of them, ranging from harmless, wimpy wedgies when my waistband was barely moved to an atomic wedgie at summer camp. One time my underwear was pulled over my head, and I could actually feel my spleen being bruised. I have truly experienced the full gamut of undergarment discomfort. (I'm not necessarily proud of that.) But there was one wedgie I was actually happy to get.

It happened one fateful day when I had gone on vacation with my Uncle Stan and Aunt Diane. We had gone to Six Flags, and on the way home we stopped to swim at a place in southern Oklahoma called Turner Falls. We were having a great time. We were swimming around next to a beautiful waterfall.

Everything was cool, but then suddenly, I hit a drop-off. I was bobbing up and down and flailing around my arms, trying to grab hold of somebody or something. Everybody was just looking at me. I wasn't (and still am not) a great swimmer, so I was drowning.

I was sinking like a brick when suddenly I felt my underwear and my cutoff denim shorts being pulled up so forcefully they pulled the rest of my chubby body with them. Uncle Stan had seen me drowning from the beach and, in an amazing display of superhuman speed, had burst from the beach to where I was. I was waving my arms like a wild, scared, little spider monkey, so he couldn't grab me from the front. I would have taken both of us down in my desperation. So he did what he had to do to rescue me. Uncle Stan reached out and grabbed me by the back of my shorts and pulled as hard as he could, and he literally saved my life by giving me a wedgie. It wasn't pretty or comfortable, but it saved me.

SOMETHING TO STAND ON

Sometimes when God rescues us, he does it in ways we don't understand. It might be a little uncomfortable. It might even temporarily hurt--like a "soul wedgie." My uncle, in his amazing lifesaving wisdom, knew that if he had tried to grab me from the front or by the arms, I would have pulled us both down. So he came at me from behind and grabbed my shorts. I didn't expect it. I didn't enjoy it. But it was what I needed, and it's what saved me.

When we're going down, God, who is good and mysterious, reaches out and rescues us. And sometimes it's not comfortable, but it's what we need. It's the hurt that brings healing.

Jeremiah 32:17 says, "Ah, sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you." When we're in trouble, it's an impossible situation, and God stretches out his arm toward us. What a cool picture! God saves us, and sometimes, it feels a little like a soul wedgie--but it's okay because he is the lifesaver and knows how to save us.

So how do we react? Do we get upset or embarrassed or angry because we don't understand the way God rescues us? I'll tell you what I did in the near-drowning. I was forever grateful. Uncle Stan saved my life by giving me a wedgie.

Many things have happened since then, but I can't look at my uncle without thinking, This is the man who once saved my life. Because of what he did, I got to live; I got to meet my wife and daughter; I got to do life with a lot of beautiful people; I got to write this book. I'm forever grateful. The temporary pain of a wedgie is gone, but the gratitude remains.

It's the same with God. I rarely understand what he's doing in my life, but I can't ever help thinking, This is the God who saved my life. Because of what he did and what he does, I get to live. I'm forever grateful.

when i see a flock of sheep, i see just that, a flock. i don't see a sheep. i see sheep. all alike. none different. that's what i see.

but not so with the shepherd. to him every sheep is different. every face is special. every face has a story. and every sheep has a name. the shepherd knows his sheep. he calls them by nae.

when we see a crowd, we see just that, a crowd. we see people, not persons, but people. a herd of humans. a flock of faces. that's what we see.

but not so with the Shepherd. to Him every face is different. every face is a story. every face is a child. and every child has a name.

the Shepherd knows his sheep. he knows each one by name. the Shepherd knows you. he knows your name. and he will never forget it. I have written your name on my hand (Isaiah 49:16).
- from When God Whispers Your Name, by Max Lucado

as you begin this new year, remember that God knows your name. He really really does. and He looooves you!

with our house under water, my head all woozy from the surgery medication (i had some dental surgery yesterday), and moving in with my mom (onto her floor), i've been craving quiet. just quiet. there's little quiet to be had when jared, me, mom, my little sister, our at and our big golden retreiver... yeah, it's a zoo! :)

when i was little, i loved amy grant. i listened to her Christmas album year round. since then, my tastes have developed... but i just bought her newest Christmas album. it's great! :) so there's this song on there, and with my craving for quiet lately, i've been singing it in my head. i hope these lyrics give you a quiet moment.

I Need A Silent Night,
by Amy Grant
I've made the same mistake before
Too many malls, too many stores
December traffic, Christmas rush
Breaks me till I push and shove

Children are crying while mothers are trying
To photograph Santa and sleigh
The shopping and buying and standing forever in line
What can I say?

(Chorus)
I need a silent night,
a Holy night
to hear an angel voice through the chaos and the noise
I need a midnight clear
A little peace right here
to end this crazy day with a silent night

December comes then disappears
Faster and faster every year
Did my own mother keep this pace
Or was the world a different place?

Where people stayed home wishing for snow
Watching three channels on their tv
Look at us now rushing around trying to buy Christmas peace

(Chorus)
I need a silent night,
a Holy night
to hear an angel voice through the chaos and the noise
I need a midnight clear
A little peace right here
to end this crazy day with a silent night

What was it like back there in Bethlehem
With peace on earth good will toward men?
