16th April 2007

A nightmare of a show with cocked-up timings akimbo, and the plan to play two (exclusive) tracks from Arctic Monkeys album Favourite Worst Nightmare was thwarted by thinking I had the album with me, unable to find it, announcing that the exclusive was abandoned, then finding it, hence only playing one track. This tape will definitely not be filed in the "possible demo tape" file.

16th July 2007

This is the show in which the "Three Of A Kind" feature became demoted to an occasional one. This programme was meant to feature The Beautiful South as the 3oAK, but due to a technical problem (ie; the mp3 disc wouldn't work) it was dropped like a hot potato and decided on air that it was to become something I'll do occasionally, as it sometimes got in the way of things.

Despite the technical failures, I'm rather happy with my 'performance' on this show. For some reason, my on-air presentation changes from the earlier programmes. In early editions I adopt a very dry, monotone delivery, and sound like I'm concentrating too much on not sounding like a clichéd DJ, so as a result sound stilted. Around the time of this show, almost from nowhere and totally unplanned, I sound very relaxed and natural, radio broadcasting beginning to fit like a G. I think this is because the show is also starting to take it's own shape and evolve into a programme I'm happy with.

Dumbing down is something that has thwarted radio for some time now. National commercial stations such as Virgin and local stations like XFM have proposed that all daytime presenters are to be shed from their schedules, creating a totally music-led programme. The idea behind this, the stuff-shirts behind these stations say is that it hands over the choice of music to the listeners, which is of course bullshit. It is merely lazy, and displays a lack of creativity in a medium that should thrive on it. It will also drive listeners straight to their iPods, as daytime schedules will be filled with back to back music. Why listen to a pre-programmed bunch of songs you haven't selected yourself when you have a device in your pocket that plays the tunes you like because you put them on there. Radio needs to have a purpose; to promote new music; to inform; and most importantly to entertain. Playing a computer-programmed bank of music stinks of an industry trying desperately to keep in line with the way in which people now want their music spoonfed to them, but missing the point completely.

Anyhoo, I digress, and could rant about the state of radio (particularly commercial radio) until I bore myself and everyone to tears. I come to speak of a different, less worrying 'dumbing down' of radio, specifically hospital radio, even more specifically the hospital radio station that I work for. This spate of dumbing down is not at the hands of money men in suits, advertising execs, and A&R men, but the fault of wasps. Yes, that's right, wasps.

A wasp nest has infested studios 1 and 2 of Radio Wulfrun, prompting the emergency closure of the station until the 20th of August. Poison has been put in place to rid the invasion and will take a few weeks to completely get rid of the pesky winged bastards. Once they have gorn, the dumbing down of Radio Wulfrun will be no more.

If only such a simple solution could be applied to commercial radio to rid it of the destruction of creative and purposeful radio that currently is taking place at the moment.
