Hey Steve (And everyone else)
There is no easy answer to this question, but there is also nothing to fear. Any observant character would notice the cyclical nature of life on earth, and indeed our solar system. This is something that has been observed and noted and celebrated throughout human history, and indeed the history of the amazingly peculiar universe which has somehow manifested itself here. I'm sure many will disagree on how it (the universe) and us (humans) got here, but one thing is fairly certain: WE ARE HERE! In fact nobody can remember us NOT being here. Even though it is still perfectly possible that we didnt exist at all.
Human history and mythology is littered with near misses. The story go's so far back that we are unsure of when it was told for the first time. But it always shows the same pattern with some variation. A lot like spring, summer, autumn and winter, or the waxing and waning of the moon. Always there is a repeating cycle. The Egyptians knew it, Mayans knew it, the Babylonians knew it as did the Greeks and countless other cultures past. The Hindus still teach it as do native American tribes. The story has been preserved in many mythologies and it always ends the same. The human autumn comes like a galactic wind sweeping over the planet at the same time of year. We decay and die out, old leaves drop off and die, becoming compost over the winter. As the cold settles in and the decay becomes the stasis of winter we enter a cacoon. We sleep and dream of history past, we mutate like all consuming catipillars in a cacoon, jellyfied primal ooze. And then when all seems dead and gone green shoots peer out from underneath the frost and with that so do we, cleansed and redeemed, spring has begun again.
So the cycles continue, each time we emerge we are more concious of our existence. Or at least there are more of us who are concious. In times gone by the majority of us were barely aware of our existence. And it would seem that there are still many who dont have this basic awereness of themselves and most importantly OF OTHERS EXISTENCE. The truth is slowley but surely humans are actually evolving in the right direction, even though it seems to be getting worse. Dont worry, there are more now who are concious and aware of the universe we live in and of ourselves and eachother. In fact this awareness could not exist without a bit of chaos and general wrongness. The cycle of life would go from terahertz, to gigahertz, to megahertz finally dropping to nothing.... NO THING.
I would love to see us move further out into the cosmos. But this is not the first step in survival, we already live on a spacship we call earth and it may actually not be the first we have inhabited. The first step to our ultimate survival is for us to realise how precious this gift of existence is and that we will ultimately have to put our differences aside, surely any human can see that the only human that is vaguely better than any other is the one who will throw aside any petty beliefs created from fear and insecurity and desperation, and accept their fellow humans.
We are all here together, surely people have noticed that. We may be alone in the world but this is something we all share. Everyone ultimately wonders why and how we got here, everyone is born naked and dies alone. There is no greater equality than this. We all exist and no matter what we own, or buy, or monumentalise we are all still the same inside. When we come to terms with this we will reach a new rungon the ladder of cosmic evolution. A new wavelength, a new frequency band to cycle around on.
Dont fret fellow man, the multivers is eternal and you are all made of the same universe. The more intense it becomes here on our little blue dot the more likely we are to keep intact on the next level of the great holodeck adventure.
Keep the faith no matter what faith yo are, and stop bickering at eachother. No true God would ever demand that we kill eachother and no human worth keeping in the gene pool for the next milennia's worth of existence (including colonisation of the universe) would even think they are superior to anyone or anything else that lives in an infinite universe on a very small planet made mostly of space.
Dont worry, its all gonna be Ok my man! Its the self compiling mega story that never existed ;)
Steve if you read this I just want to say you have been a major inspiration in my life and not to worry there is no way that anyof this can stop existing, if it did it would only be a cosmetic overhaul ;)
Loads of love dude
